A = Aftercare (what they're like after sex)

When Mav does aftercare, it's one of the only times he truly lets loose. You can practically watch his ego melt. If your previous activities were on the more intense side, expect him to be extra soft, if not downright apologetic. I also fully believe he's a cuddler. You might go take a shower or bath, get a snack, etc., but at some point, he'll (literally) drag you back to bed or to the couch.

Both 1986 and 2019 Maverick is clearly a tad bit obsessed with his appearance. Despite coming of age in the 70s and 80s, Maverick is almost completely clean-shaven. This is something he incorporates into his permanent grooming habits.

I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)

Maverick, despite his flirty nature in his youth, is not a fan of one-night stands. The lack of emotion and intimacy is a major turn-off for him. He wants to take his time and really show (and tell) how much he loves his partner.

On paper, this was just another tally on a long list of marks representing each time he didn't say goodbye before leaving. Yet something was different this time. Maybe it was the fact that they were unable to confirm a return date, or if he'd even be returning at all.

You were aware this mission was dangerous, just as all of them are, and you knew Maverick liked to downplay things, but it wasn't until you were in Admiral Simpson's office practically begging him to tell you about the assignment that you connected just how dangerous it was.

It was there that you became aware that this mission was one that someone wasn't coming back from. You knew precisely where Maverick's morals lie. It was one of the things you admired most about him. But if you knew anything about the man you'd spent the best years of your life chasing, you knew he'd do everything in his power to sacrifice himself in place of one of another member of his squadron.

Sitting alone in your shared home, minutes turned into hours turned into days. It was a few hours before sunrise on the fifth day that you knew you couldn't take this anymore. You know what you were signing up for when you made your feelings for him known all those years ago, but your patience and understanding had run dry. For the first time in days, you moved from the bed, heading to the hall closet to retrieve your luggage. Pulling the bags and suitcases down, you fought back the tears pricking at your eyes. You brought the luggage back into your room and placed them on the bed. With a deep breath, you willed yourself to open the first dresser drawer. Pushing Pete's clothes aside, you began placing your clothes in the bags.

Everything after that was a blur. You moved from bedroom to bathroom to kitchen and back completely numb. Knowing that you'd never leave if you allowed yourself even a single thought. It wasn't until you were standing in front of the photo albums that you snapped out of your daze. Your fingers ran over the leather spines, cracked and dusty with age, and your tears finally fell. How long had you neglected these books filled with the best moments of your life? How long had he been neglecting you? You never asked for much of anything from him. You'd followed him around the globe and back so many times you couldn't even count. You never asked why he was so damn reckless. You never questioned why he insisted on being the proverbial thorn in the Navy's side. Yet this same man who supposedly loved you couldn't even grant you your one ask, a simple goodbye before leaving for what could become forever. You knew from the moment you meet him decades ago that you loved him, so why did he make keeping that love alive so hard?

Sympathy and guilt swirled in your chest as you stepped away from the shelf. You deserved better than this.

Leading your dog into the car, you opened the windows and allowed the cool morning air in before turning back to the home you and Maverick shared. Closing the car door, it took all the power you had to enter the house one last time. Minutes later you found yourself standing motionless in the living room. Your head and your heart were fighting. Should you leave him a note? Did he deserve to know where you were headed? Do finally tell him all the things you'd been harboring? A thousand thoughts flooded you're mind. What if he never came back? What if your letter sat unread on the coffee table until someone came around to collect his things? You shuddered at the thought and instead put pen to paper. Giving him one last piece of yourself before you swore him off for good.

If you're half the man I think thought you were, you'd know my leaving was a long time coming. I know what you're thinking, but please save both of us the pain and don't come looking for me. Just know one of us was kind enough to say goodbye.

All those movies that show a woman leaving her man only to run for and live the life she'd always dreamed of were liars.

Switching the TV off, you rolled onto your back and stared at the ceiling. You were laying on the bed in your parent's guest room, not unlike you were just a week and a half ago when Maverick was shipped off. You hadn't heard a word about the mission. Not that you expected or necessarily wanted to, but you couldn't shake the sick feeling in your gut.

From beyond the bedroom, you heard the doorbell ring. You tried to convince yourself it was just another amazon package, but the hushed murmur of voices traveling to your room was doing its best to convince you otherwise. Before you could act, You heard footsteps approaching. A knock on the door and your mother's voice finally set off the alarm bells in your head. She opened the door with your permission and sat on the edge of the bed. Silence hung heavy in the air as she collected her words. "Someone's here to see you." When you didn't answer she reached out to touch your arm, but you quickly rolled away, instead bringing your knees up and trying to drown out the burning in your chest and the sound of sirens in your head. The silence grew thicker until spoke again. "I'm not asking you to go out there. I'm telling you." She said lowly with unreadable eyes. By now you were feeling even more defeated than you had been in a very long time. You rolled over to face her, trying your best to silently bargain your way out of the situation. You watched as your expression glided between stern and sympathetic. Settling on sympathy, she reached out and placed her palm on your leg. Pulling her lips into a tight smile, she squeezed your calf gently before exiting the room without another word. Alone once again, you weighed your options. Moments passed until you decided to follow the path your mother took out of the spare bedroom, albeit arguing with yourself the whole way. Your hand shook as you reached for the doorknob and you wanted nothing more than to hide under the bed linens and never come out.

By the grace of nothing but your sheer willpower, you made it to the end of the hallway. It wasn't until you went to take the first step into the living room that you felt your heart stop in your chest. Sat on the couch was a white T-shirt covering broad shoulders hanging low. On the coffee table was a large bouquet of Gardenias, wallflowers, and windflowers. Hope, Fidelity, and Anticipation.

"Don't come looking for me."

Maverick wasn't a flowers type of guy, and he was most certainly not known for following directions. You always took him for a boombox over his head, 3 am last-ditch declaration of love, grand gesture type of man. Maybe he had a change of heart? But even from behind, you could tell the man yards in front of you was haggard and meek. Something was off. Leaning against the wall for support, the floorboards groaned underneath your feet. The sound rang out through the eerily silent home. The noise triggered the figure to turn and face you.

Your legs nearly gave out under you as his green eyes, ringed with sleeplessness and heavy with something you couldn't quite place, met yours.

"....Bradley?"

note: I have now entered a bit of a Maverick phase. I fully blame a select few gifs (one of which is below) and that one scene in the beginning of TG: Maverick where he calls the jet sweetheart. They knew exactly what they were doing with that scene.

This is written using gender neutral terms.

a- asking (Who's the first person to confess and how does it happen?)

Mav would be quite upfront about his feelings from the beginning. However, I picture him having a mutual confession with his s/o while doing something they both enjoy.

B - Butterflies (How they act when they're nervous.)

On the rare occasion that our favorite dare devil is gets nervous, he's somehow still as charming as ever. He'll stand off to the side with his hands in his pockets, shuffling from foot to foot. Occasionally scratching the back of his neck or pulling at his shirt collar.

c- cuddles (What is their favourite cuddling position? Do they like physical touch?)

Before you two got together, he wasn't against physical touch, per say, he just didn't get the hype. Once you started initiating it though? You practically have to peel him off you. He's not particularly picky when it comes to a position. Big spoon, Little spoon, an arm around his waist while you walk, him varying his head in your hair while you cook... He’s down for it all.

d- domesticity (Are they the type to settle down with you? Are they willing to help with chores? What is your daily routine with them?)

This all depends on how you define "settling down".

A lifelong commitment of love between two adults which may or may not see you two walking down the aisle? Sign him up.

A house in the suburbs, church bake sales, and PTA meetings however? That’s his personal version of hell.

In every area of his life he’s horribly restless and avoids anything that could be routine and predicable like its the plague. This has led to several potential partners to label him a commitment-phobe, which actually couldn't be further from the truth. Once he’s with you, this man is your absolute ride or die, and If you're anything like him, that die might become a bit more literal if you aren't careful. Don't hesitate to tug his reins a bit and drag him back down to earth, just don't expect him to remain there for too long.

e- encouragement (Do they encourage you to achieve your goals? If so, how do they support you?)

When I said he's your ride or die, it applies to all areas of your relationship. Once you two are together, your goals and achievements are his goals and achievements, and vice versa. Mav is an absolute force of nature, so once he’s cheering you on, you can expect to be very successful in all areas.

f- favourite thing(s) about you (What are their favourite personality traits/physical features about you?)

Personality: He loves your lust for life and your ability to role with the punches. He frequently comes to you with a variety of spontaneous ideas and would love it if you even just gave him the time of day (or night). If you actually enthuse him, or better yet bring your own ideas to him? He’s taking you ring shopping wherever you two land.

Physical: I swear this isn't a knock at his stature, but i really feel like Mav would love a tall partner. There’s something about long legs that he just finds *chef kiss*. Also, If he happens to come across the snacks you hid on the top shelf, he’s going to go all pouty for minimum of 6 hours. Its oddly adorable, and not just because he’s a little on the small side.

g- goofiness (Do they like to make you laugh? How often do they joke around with you?)

Despite his ego, he's not afraid to laugh and frankly becomes uncomfortable when things get really serious.

h- honesty (Would they lie to you? How much do they share with you?)

This is his biggest red flag.

Due to his somewhat controversial personality, he’s developed a bit of a lying habit to avoid as much friction as possible. This eventually leads to him telling little white lies about extremely trivial things.

Has he seen your baseball cap? Of course not. He totally didn’t take it yesterday to keep the sun out of his eyes while he worked in the hanger.

And if the lie could protect you, evenly a minuscule amount? He’s doing it. No hesitation.

Its a slow process, but he’s getting better at being truthful.

i- impression (What was their first impression of you? Was it positive or negative?)

You two met when you answered a posting asking for help restoring an old two seater plane. You were pretty inexperienced in the field, but were dying to learn, and who better to learn from than the best? During your first conversation you expressed this desire to him and you could all but actually see his smile over the phone. You continued to talk until he formally invited you to come stay with him while restoring the plane. Arriving in Nevada, he was expressed how exciting it was to finally put a face to a name (and voice). He of course thought you were attractive, but it was over dinner your first there that you smiled and laughed at one of his stupid jokes he began to fall for you.

j- jealousy (Are they the type of person to get jealous? If so, how do they react to being jealous?)

Not in the least. He’s very secure in your relationship and any attention/interest you receive does nothing but boost his (already massive) ego.

k- kissing (Where do they like to kiss you? How frequently do they like to kiss?)

Kisses from Mav are nothing short of earth shattering. He kisses like the last thing he'll ever do. They aren't frequent, but each one is well worth the wait.

l- love language (What's their love language?)

Quality time. Mav absolutely love spending time with you. You could be putting sheets on your bed or sailing to the south pole. He's just happy to be with you.

m- marriage (Do they want to marry you eventually? Who proposes to who?)

He doesn’t hate the partnership side of marriage, it honestly feeds into his slightly possessive nature. What he isn't a fan of are the social expectations as well as the overt formality of it all.

n- nicknames (What do they call you? What do you call them?)

For you: Angel, honey, sweetheart

For him: Darling, Dear, Mav, Cap/Captain

o- openness (How much do they tell you about themselves? Do they reveal everything at once or gradually throughout the relationship?)

Pete has this weird tendency of dropping big, important info about himself during otherwise normal activities. Folding laundry? Now you know his blood type. Brushing your teeth in the morning? Did you know he was declared dead for exactly 8 minutes and 12 seconds in 1996? While you never quite used to it, its a pretty fascinating way to learn about someone.

p- PDA (Are they affectionate in public or do they prefer to keep your kisses behind closed doors? Are they the type to brag about their SO?)

He's not much of a kisser overall, but a quick peck here or there while in public doesn't phase him. Its also not uncommon for him to slip an arm around your waist or swing your legs over his while sitting.

q- quality time (how do they like to spend time with you?)

For him, spending time together is less about what you're doing and more so about who you're doing it with. That’s not to say that you two don't get up to some wild stuff together. (No, not like that. Unless...)

r- romance (Are they the romantic type? If so, how do they express their feelings?)

He's not too romantic overall, but he does on occasion like to surprise you with gifts and/or more traditionally romantic things. These gestures tend to be pretty spontaneous.

s- security (How protective are they of you? If they are, how do they show this?)

So. Protective. As much as he personally hates being smothered, he will do just that to you given the chance. He treats you like the most fragile being in the universe. If you are a more daring individual, don't be surprised if he’s shadowing your every move while holding a fully stocked first aid kit. When it comes to protectiveness against unwanted attention, he takes a similar, but approach. You still don't know how he does it, but there’s been more than one occasion of him literally just staring down the person making you uncomfortable until they run off with their tails tucked between their legs.

t- turn-offs (What traits do they find unattractive?)

smothering him, trying to force him to traditionally settle down, etc

u- understanding (Are they good at sympathizing with your problems? Do they listen to you when you need to rant?)

He's the best person to rant to. Not only will he listen to your problems and provide emotional, physical and/or moral support, he'll help you come up with any possible solutions as well. All his life experience makes his advice amazing as well

v- value (What do they value most about your relationship?)

Companionship. Just having someone to come home to every night means the world to him.

w- wild card (A random headcanon about your relationship)

He genuinely gives the greatest massages ever. His hands are strong and steady and so warm and he always knows just where you need his hands most.

x- x-ray (How well are they able to read you?)

Despite his best efforts, Mav can tend to be a bit oblivious to your needs, especially at first. You don't necessarily have to spell it out for him, but if you are particularly well guarded he may miss some things.

y- yearning (How well do they cope when their SO isn't with them?)

The longer you two are together, the harder it becomes for him. Over time it begins to feel like he’s missing pieces of himself when you aren't there.

z- zappy (Are they fast-paced in a relationship? Or do they like to take things slow?)

Once things are official, he feels no need to move fast. He’s perfectly happy to just co-exist with you.

I have so many thoughts about this! I didn't include everyone, but I can make another post with more folks if yall want!

Music I think Top Gun characters would listen to.

Iceman: Tom will listen to anything, however, he has a massive soft spot for female power vocalists. It's become a running joke that if you ever need to find Iceman, just listen for Celine Dion. Aside from that, his most played artists are Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carrey.

Hangman: Realistically, Hangman would listen to country radio with some classic rock mixed in. His all-time favorite artists are James Brown and Led Zepplin.

In my head, however, he has the same music taste as a middle school boy but on a 3-5 year delay and is currently in his Sicko Mode era rn.

Rooster: I think we all know the answer to this. The sheer amount of 80s music rooster has downloaded is almost concerning.

Maverick: Pete Mitchell is the quintessential Bruce Springsteen fan. Aside from that, he'll listen to just about anything.

Bob: Bob has an extensive vinyl collection which consists almost entirely of oldies. His most played artists are Bobby Vinton, Johnny Tillotson, and Patsy Cline.

Coyote: 2000s club hits. It's such a problem Cyclone created a tip line to report anytime Flo Rida or Mike Posner is played out loud.

Cyclone: Cyclone sits alone with his thoughts. Once a year he will play the first 10 minutes of an alpha male podcast. As a treat.
