hi jon, i was reading your post about nico rosberg being a divisive figure in f1 and first of all i wanted to say it was so perfectly written i would read an essay of yours but it also reminded me of the similarities with motogp. (i'm assuming you don't follow it)
casey stoner has had a similar experience to nico rosberg, the year he retired (2012) he finished 3rd in the championship and they year before he had won so to many he is a 'what could have been' even though he is a double motogp world champion (2007 & 2011). years later he finally revelead that he was struggling with chronic fatigue (!!!can you imagine riding in the highest category of your sport with chronic fatigue??) and also depression and anxiety. he said that his depression was worse after the weekends he went well for fear of disappointing his team afterwards. so it truly was either his career or his life
also they way you categorized the dead drivers has mythological characters people romanticize really spoke to me. in the 'patroclus' category i would put marco simoncelli. i have compared him to jules bianchi multiple times to explain it. he passed away in 2011 after a crash in sepang. valentino rossi was also involved in the collision. him and vale were really good friends and he has said that marco's death had influenced the decision to create an academy to help young italian riders (cause he had been helping marco) and has called marco the 'first student of the academy'. valentino's academy has had amazing results, this year world champion pecco bagnaia is an academy boy and so is marco bezzecchi third in the championship. he has 4 riders in motogp !!(pecco bagnaia, marco bezzecchi, luca marini, franco morbidelli). simoncelli's dad paolo has created his own team to rember his son (sic58 squadra corse -> sic was his nickname and 58 his number) creating new opportunities for riders. so they're honoring him and keeping his legacy alive the same way charles is doing at ferrari for jules and his dad.
sorry for the rant and sorry if there's any mistakes english is my second language, i'm was just really fascinated by the way you explained the narratives
thanks for the ask! your english is perfect.
i don’t watch motogp at the moment but i really should. one of my partners and two of my cousins are very into motorcycles and love it. like it clearly has the same capacity for grand narratives as f1 does and i am all about those grand narratives.
i think lots of sports fans (especially very masculine cis het men who are into sports for masculine cis het men reasons) like to view sports as a scientific pursuit, as more deserving of their time and attention than art because it can somehow be objectively quantified. and really that’s not true - yes there is a lot of data and numbers, but we invent the terms of the game just as much as we invent the themes of art. and even then people will throw away those numbers in a heartbeat to defend the narratives they have attached themselves to (see everyone repeatedly insisting senna is the greatest f1 driver of all time when no metric we’ve used to quantify racing data will testify to that being true).
people become most upset when their narrative expectations are denied. this isn’t an “oh the villain won” issue - that’s a tragedy, but tragedy still gives us catharsis, we get our emotional pay off, it still fits into narrative archetypes. no, it’s when people like nico rosberg and casey stoner pack up and go home and reveal the artifice of that narrative. imagine if the actor playing hamlet got up in the middle of the to be or not to be soliloquy, wiped off his makeup, got out of his costume and left via the fire exit.
(side note - the original film of jesus christ superstar pulls this off incredibly. in the final scene, you see all the actors, bar the one playing jesus, out of costume, boarding a bus to leave the set, leaving us asking ourselves a bunch of uncomfortable questions about viewing the crucifixion for entertainment).

hiii👋🏻 i might be late to the party but i was rewatching hitting the apex and i realized that in the end, when they show paolo simoncelli with his new team sic58 squadra corse, the tiny rider they show has casadei on his leathers! as in motoE worldchampion mattia casadei!!
i knew he stared with paolo's team, i just didn't think he would be in hitting the apex
Hi Isabella 👋👋👋👋
Don't worry, I watched Hitting the Apex for the first time 2 years ago, and there's a lot of people watching it at the moment.
I didn't know that it was Mattia the one with Paolo, so thanks to letting me know. It also makes sense because most of the Moto2 grid is formed by ex-Moto2 riders or European Moto2 riders. Somehow, MotoE has become an alternative route to enter the Moto2 grid while avoiding the Moto3 class.
Mattia was a case of right moment and right time that allowed him to be in Hitting the appex. Lol

Marco mi manchi come l’aria.

Special Liveries for the Official WorldSBK and MotoGP Teams for the Misano Races
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The return of Giallo Ducati: special liveries for the official WorldSBK and MotoGP teams for the Misano races. Ducati pays tribute to its history in the world of racing by announcing that both the official WorldSBK (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team) and MotoGP (Ducati Lenovo Team) teams will compete in the Misano rounds of their respective World Championships with a special livery characterized by the return of Giallo Ducati colour.
Tumblr media
The project was presented during a press conference held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in which Centro Stile Ducati Director Andrea Ferraresi took part together with the Italian designer Aldo Drudi, the man who created the special livery . The unveiling for the fans took place shortly before the formation lap of Race-1 of the Italian WorldSBK round, when the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team opened the garage door and the official riders, World Champion Alvaro Bautista and teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi, entered the track astride their respective Panigale V4 R in Giallo Ducati with race suits coordinated with the shades of the bike.

Yellow is a colour that has an important tradition in the history of the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer. The first sport motorcycles in this colour date back to the first half of the '70s (the 750 Sport and 750 SS Desmo of the Spaggiari team), but it was in the '90s that Giallo Ducati, the colour that specifically inspired this livery, had the moment of greatest popularity with the adoption in the world of racing, which then extended to series production. The memorable models in Giallo Ducati certainly include the Ducati 748, whose racing version took Paolo Casoli to victory in the 1997 edition of the Supersport World Series, without forgetting superbikes such as the 916, 996, 749, 999 and other various models in the range.
Tumblr media
“Ducati has an extraordinary history of which its passionate fans are extremely proud. The yellow colour is an important part of this and we have chosen to celebrate it through a contemporary livery full of energy. – declared Andrea Ferraresi, Ducati Centro Stile Director - Colour is an essential ingredient for brand recognition and a fundamental element for all Ducatisti. Ducati is Red, but Yellow also belongs to us and at the same time has an important tradition in Italian motorsport. Giallo Ducati reflects important aspects of our identity, such as energy, enthusiasm and audacity and is a really nice tribute to our sporting history in the year in which we race as World Champions in the two most important motorcycle championships".
Tumblr media
From a chromatic point of view, the livery of the Panigale V4 R of the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Team has been designed starting from the original graphic base. Giallo Ducati becomes the dominant colour of the bike and is crossed by black, grey and white blocks and lines, creating a combination that celebrates the sporting history of the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer, but at the same time gives Giallo Ducati a modern identity.
UnipolSai- Ancona, Jesi, Osimo, Fidapa, BPW Italy-Sez. All the pain of a father in a sign of destiny, SIC: "Because it's alive inside us"
All the pain of a father in a sign of destiny, SIC: “Because it’s alive inside us”
The roar of the engines has stopped, the track is empty: outside there is silence, but inside a buzz of thoughts. Sepang International Circuit. The initials of the Malaysian stage of the World Championship make up the nickname of “Sic”, Marco Simoncelli. Papa Paolo recalled this in a moving letter. Author: Maurizio De Santis Sepang is always a special and painful stage, Paolo Simoncelli…

"Giallo Ducati" makes a triumphant return to WorldSBK in Misano
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Championship leader Alvaro Bautista claimed his 12th win of the season with Ducati. He took his 70th WorldSBK podium boosting his lead to a 78-point advantage over Razgatlioglu. Local hero Michael Ruben Rinaldi finished second in Race 1 for his 18th podium, for the fourth time in 2023. Toprak Razgatlioglu completed Race 1 podium finishing 8.971s behind Bautista. He remains second in the Championship standing. The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship racing action got underway with a shortened 20-lap Race 1 at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” during the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round as Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) led teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi as the pair sported a special yellow livery in Race 1. Bautista had a five-second margin over his teammate has he made it 12 wins from 13 races in 2023 while Rinaldi added to his Misano podium count.
Tumblr media
As the lights went out for the 20-lap race, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) and Rinaldi looked to have got a better start compared to Bautista but the reigning Champion was able to hold on from the pair to keep the lead from pole position. The trio fought it out over the early laps of the race with Razgatlioglu aiming to pass Rinaldi around the outside into Turn 4 with the Italian defending to keep second place. As the race settled down, Bautista and Rinaldi were both able to gap Razgatlioglu in first and second place respectively to claim a home victory for Ducati on a special liveried Panigale V4 R, with the bike running yellow colours rather than red to pay homage to Ducati’s history. While the two Ducati riders checked out in front, Razgatlioglu had to withstand some early pressure from Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) but the 2021 Champion was able to resist that pressure before pulling out a gap over his rivals. As the race hit the halfway stage, Petrucci dropped Bassani behind him and started gaining on Razgatlioglu in the podium fight. By Lap 12, Ragatlioglu started pulling away from the Italian rookie to claim third place. Razgatlioglu’s third place means he closes in on a century of WorldSBK podium while it was Yamaha’s 349th race on the podium. WorldSBK action resumes on Sunday from 09:00 (Local Time) with the Warm-Up, followed by Tissot Superpole Race at 11:00 and Race 2 at 14:00.
Tumblr media
Unveiled before the start of Race 1 for Aruba.it Racing – Ducati riders Alvaro Bautista and Michael Ruben Rinaldi, the yellow livery pays tribute to some historic bikes from Ducati, including the 750 Sport and 750 SS Desmo in the 1970s, before the yellow livery became more popular in the 1990s. Ducati models including the 916, 996, 749, 999 and 1199 have all been run in the yellow livery. Famously, Pierfrancesco Chilli raced the Ducati 998 RS in yellow and won in 2004 at Misano running a yellow livery while Paolo Casoli led a race using a yellow Ducati at 1996 in Hockenheim, Steve Martin ran it in 2004 and Lorenzo Lanzi claimed a race victory at Valencia in 2008 on a yellow liveried Ducati.
