Pooja Room Interior Design Ideas
The pooja room is the most sacred place in a home. It can be as simple or intricate as we want it to be. No matter the size, small or too large, and how the layout is, it should always radiate a positive spiritual energy. Every Indian household has a separate pooja room. Here are some of the best pooja room interior design ideas to inspire you and give you an idea to decorate your pooja room. It is not necessary to have a large pooja room to get more blessings. Whether you have placed a little statue of the god or constructed a large pooja room, you will obtain the same divine benefits.
Your pooja room design is based on factors like the location of the mandir, and it should match the overall home décor, the perfect material that should be used (glass, wooden, brass, ceramic), the style of the pooja room, and the accessories.
Here are some quirky pooja room design ideas to try:
Carved Wood Mandir: Opting for a hanging mandir can save a lot of space if you don’t have ample space for a pooja room designs for indian homes. Decorate it with pooja room accessories.
Corner Mandir Setup: a combination of green plants with rich gold bras pooja kits worked excellent for pooja room design.
Traditional South Indian Mandir: If you want something classic for your pooja room design, the South Indian style mandir with lots of lights and flowers will be the best choice.
Add Elements: having a separate room for the mandir is unnecessary. You can always create a pooja corner by adding elements like hanging brass planters, vilakkus, brass bells, etc.
A Gorgeous Brass Dash Avatar Set: Do you love collecting antique brass deities? How about placing a gorgeous dash avatar set to make your mandir more unique?
A quirky pooja cabinet: a vintage and vibrant cabinet would be perfect for your pooja room design.
Use pastel colors: avoid painting the pooja room walls with dark colors; instead, use pastel colors like white, beige, light pink, or yellow. Pastel shades make the room look airy and offer a sense of tranquility.
Incorporate glass: the pooja room is always the smallest one in comparison to other rooms in the house. So try using glass doors, windows, or shelves to make it appear bigger. You can also choose stained glass to let the sunlight pass through it.
Enahce with marble: marble adds a touch of richness and elegance to the space. It looks eye-catching and perfect for enhancing pooja room design.
Use jaali partitions: introducing jaali partitions can also enhance the pooja room design. Build an enclosure with jalis and place it around the mandir. They are cheap, easy to install, and provide enough privacy.
The pooja room is one of the significant pillars of Hindu culture that embodies the deep-rooted values and traditions passed down through generations. A place of such importance must be able to create a tranquil ambience. No matter what size apartment or duplex you have, you can enhance the worship space with these indian pooja room design ideas.

Vastu Tip’s For Kitchen
Is Vastu for the kitchen important?
The kitchen in an Indian household is a sacred place where energy transformation happens – from raw and uncooked items to nutritious meals that instill energy into the family member’s body upon consumption. These meals that are the source of life for the family need to be produced in a positive and wholesome environment. If the same meals are cooked in negative territory, the food cooked becomes the carrier of negative energy. This negative energy is harmful to the family’s well-being as this imbalance in energy starts to affect the family members physically and mentally. One begins to feel the negativity on their body and mind.
Problems caused by a Non-Compliant Kitchen
Summarizing the above, we can conclude that many problems arise when we have a kitchen in the house that is not Vastu compliant. But the following 3 issues are the most frequent:
Loss of Health – weak core energy developed from consuming food with negativity lowers the immunity for the family members and exposes them to lethal diseases and even untimely death
Monetary Loss – with a weak constitution, family members are unable to focus on their financial condition and leads to a loss
Dispute between family – it is often said that a healthy family is a happy family that stands right in this case where prolonged misfortunes of the family lead to frequent clashes that disrupt the home’s harmony.
Vastu is not only confined to the kitchens but also applies to your entire home. Learn more about the right Vastu directions for your new home here.
By involving Vastu for the kitchen, one can apply specific rules to help change the space’s aura. Having a kitchen as per Vastu ensures that you can dispose of all negative energy by enhancing the positive powers already available in the area.
4 tips and tricks to construct a kitchen as per Vastu guidelines
Tip #1: Identify the perfect location
If you have purchased a bare home and have the freedom to make changes to the floor plan, then you are already halfway done. The ideal kitchen location, as per Vastu, is the South-East corner of the home. The Fire element is said to reside here and channel good energy – making this the perfect corner for constructing your kitchen. But if due to some issues, construction cannot be done in this corner, the second-best kitchen location as per Vastu is the North-West corner.
But if your kitchen is pre-installed in a corner that is not favorable, then one must implement remedies that will reduce the ill-effects of these Vastu defects.
Tip #2: Make the right entry
One must locate a kitchen in a Vastu-compliant corner of the house, but its entryway will determine the flow of the positive energy generated here. One of Vastu’s strictest rules for a kitchen is that the main door must not be placed in any corners. The ideal locations for the kitchen doorway are in the East, North, or West wall.
Tip #3: Place the stove in the correct place
Along with constructional rules, another rule that must be followed for safety reasons is never to place cooking gas burners or stoves directly in front of the entrance. More than a principle of Vastu, it is a safety measure that one must abide by. Also, keep in mind the direction the cook faces while cooking. The cook must never face West while cooking, according to kitchen Vastu. To ensure the good health of the family members, the cook must always face East while cooking.
Tip #4: Placement of electronics matters
Kitchens are the place where most electronic products are used. And ensuring that all of them have a long life is crucial, considering the investment you make in them. Use the platform near the South wall to keep microwave ovens, mixer/grinder, and operate them at their designated spot only. Install drinking water equipment on the North-East or North walls. Refrigerators in the North-East or South-West direction should be avoided to prevent frequent break-downs.
3 Must Do’s for Kitchen Vastu Improvement
If you have the freedom to design your kitchen from scratch, make sure to install platforms along the East and South-East corner. An “L”-shaped platform is the most preferred as it will cover both the suggested sides.
There should always be a distance between the stove and the wash-basin or sink in the kitchen. According to Vastu, the two elements, Fire and Water, repel each other, and the result is never good.
Storage units meant for grains, pulses, various spices, etc. should always be constructed on the South or West walls.
3 Things to Avoid in the Kitchen according to Vastu
We know black or dark-colored finishes make any kitchen look classy and makes it easy to maintain. But dark colors in kitchens as per Vastu is a big no-no. Auspicious colors like red, green, orange, and so on can be used in the kitchen.
Do not construct the pooja/prayer room directly above or under the kitchen. Same with bedrooms.
Having no windows or exhaust fans in a kitchen must be avoided. At least 2 windows in the kitchen’s East and West walls are recommended to have proper ventilation.
These are some of Vastu’s very basics for the kitchen that one should be mindful of when designing their space. It is best to consult a professional or even employ an interior designer for the task for further detailed information. Our designers at Finelook Interior understand your need to have a happy and healthy home. The principles of Vastu are included while designing your home interiors. The Hidden Secrets Of Traditional Houses In Kerala
Kerala also has the distinction of being a place of some beautiful architecture in the country. Kerala homes will inspire you with their beautiful decor, choice of color and beautiful materials. They give large importance to traditional architecture and design. Here are some prominent features of Traditional Kerala homes.
NALUKETTU HOUSES
The traditional big house of Kerala was called the nalukettu. The nalukettu was a typical feature of the Kerala tharavadu tradition, where joint families lived together for generations with a patriarch and matriarch overseeing all their affairs. The larger and wealthier families had ettukettu and pathinaarukettu featured with eight and sixteen blocks with two, four and rarely six courtyards respectively. These houses were built according to the scientific principles of the traditional Thachu Shastra (the science of architecture) developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. Houses were constructed facing the east.
Kerala homes involve a lot of traditional materials in their home designs, mainly wood and bricks. Wood is used for rafters of the roof, for beams and columns, for paneling of staircases, for parapets of the poomukham (the first space of the house) and even for ornately designed pillars. Good quality woods –like teak and rosewood were used. The entrance to the house would have a verandah designed to receive visitors. Charupady is a seating that enables one to take advantage of poomukham and verandah and can enjoy breeze and rain easily. Inside, the nadumuttam is surrounded by rooms on all sides. A special room was meant to store valuables. Granaries, cattle sheds, kitchen and utility, dining halls, bathrooms, bedrooms, Pooja rooms, wells, and other purpose-built spaces filled all the corners of a naalukettu. The roofing of Kerala houses is one element that will definitely catch your attention.
Since it is a zone of rainfall, there are no flat roofs. They play an important function of keeping the interiors of the house cool from within and the roof pitch help in easy drainage of water off the roof. Woodwork and pillars (chitrathoonukal) is a prominent feature of traditional Kerala homes. Clay tiles enable us to keep the interiors cool in any weather condition. The beautifully polished red oxide is generally red, but may also be black and brown. Wooden flooring is also seen in some traditional houses.
SEMPULATHIL HOMES
SEMPULATHIL which literally translates to ‘Red Earth Homes’, combines the elements of our traditional south Indian ethnic architecture with the vernacular architecture. Sempulathil project envisions the usage of locally sourced natural materials as much as possible. VASTU FOR LIVING ROOM
Vastu is an ancient Indian science that came out of the need for living in harmony and prosperity. It eliminates the negativity from the environment of the home to reinforce positivity around us. The Vastu Shastras, as it has been called in old texts, are rules and regulations based on which a house becomes a gateway to channel those positive energies. Influences of bad Vastu can be recognized through alarming health issues for family members, unforeseen loss in business, or even in regular disrupts in relationships. In order to protect your family’s health and prosperity in the best way possible, exploring the various aspects of the Vastu Shastra is essential.
Based on the direction of your house that can most influence you, we have listed a few tips below that can help house owners to create a positive environment that is embedded in the structure of their house.
Vastu for North-facing house
The most preferred direction to build a home is the North-facing direction. Even though it is considered to be the best choice, there have been times when a Vastu for a North-facing house has turned out to be inauspicious too. And as the placement of the main door is what determines what kind of energy will flow into the house, for a North-facing home’s Vastu an entrance at any location facing the Northside is the best. Influenced by this fact, read on to find the correct Vastu Shastra as per house facing while constructing your new abode:
5 Do’s for North-facing houses
1. Walls in the North and East should be slightly shorter and thinner than the other two directions
2. Construct the living room in the North-East corner of the house
3. The kitchen must be in the South-East or North-East zone
4. Pooja Room should also be present in the North-East corner to ensure prosperity and wealth
5. Keep the area towards North and North-East always clean
5 Don’ts for North-facing houses
1. Avoid toilets and bedrooms in the North-East corner of the house
2. Avoid staircases on the Northside by the door
3. Do not store garbage or clutter in the North or North-East side
4. Avoid any big trees being located on the Northside in front of the entrance
5. Avoid plots sloping from North to South
Vastu for East-facing house
Even though it is only the second most preferred direction for houses, East-facing houses can range from being very auspicious to very inauspicious ones. The main door of the house must be strategically placed in the middle of the North-East to South-East side of the house. This is the most auspicious location as it blesses the residents with a lot of respect in the society.
5 Do’s for East-facing houses
1. The kitchen should be made in the South-East or North-West direction
2. The most auspicious location for the puja room is in the North-East
3. The North-East direction is also good for planning out the living room
4. The master bedroom’s best location is if it is in the South-West corner
5. Facing East in a South-East kitchen and West in a North-West kitchen
5 Don’ts for East-facing houses
1. Avoid toilets in the North-East corner
2. Avoid bedrooms in the North-East corner
3. No staircases in this zone too
4. Avoid building on a plot that slopes from North to South
5. Avoid toilets, bedroom or septic tanks in the North-East direction
Vastu for West-facing house
Many homeowners prefer a West-facing house due to the fact that the space is bathed in the glowing warmth of the evening sun and has more influence in bringing prosperity. Individuals from many different walks of life prefer this as it brings in positivity for each of them. The youngsters love it as it brings energy and enjoyment. It is also considered ideal for people who are business owners, teachers, politicians and religious leaders as this directly influences a better social standing.
5 Do’s for West-facing houses
1. Master bedroom should be kept in the south-west side
2. The living room is best placed in the East, North or North-East direction
3. The kitchen should be made in the South-East or North-West direction
4. The most auspicious location for the puja room is in the North-East for businessmen
5. Also auspicious is a plot that slopes from South to North
5 Don’ts for West-facing houses
1. Avoid children’s room in the North-East corner
2. Avoid putting windows in the South and the West  directions
3. Do not create any facilities for water storage in the West
4. Do not opt for color palettes that are not neutral or do not depict the vast blue sky
5. Never buy plots or flats that have extensions in the South or South-West direction
Vastu for South-facing house
Even though this type of house has garnered a bad reputation over a period of time, this misconception can be changed by strictly following specific principles of the Vastu Shashtra. If one gets to stay or create a South-facing house that abides by every principle of the Vastu – then that house is the most auspicious place. Starting with the most critical part of the house – the main door, for a South-facing house the door must open on the Southside itself. Once the entrance is finalized, it is time for the other rules of the Vastu to be implemented.
5 Do’s for South-facing houses
1. Master bedroom should be kept in the South-West corner with staircases in the South
2. The walls in the South and West are recommended to be made thicker and higher than the rest
3. The kitchen can be made in the South-East or North-West corner
4. The North-East is the most auspicious for establishing the Puja room or the Living
5. South-side is a great place to build staircases
5 Don’ts for South-facing houses
1. Avoid extensions on the Southside
2. Avoid car parking in the Southside
3. Do not create any facilities for water storage in the South-West corner
4. Avoid keeping open spaces in the South than in the North
5. Don’t build on a plot that slopes from North to South.
Being Vastu compliant becomes harder for homeowners who are looking to build their own individual houses. After all, it is not the orientation of the house that makes it inhabitable but rather the placement of every single room is what matters.
