EDITORIAL: Taming the scourge of security funds theft
EDITORIAL: Taming the scourge of security funds theft
A national policy dialogue on corruption and insecurity in Nigeria recently organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), exhumed what does not regrettably command national attention. Funds for national security are brazenly stolen in the country by security top brass, contractors and bureaucrats. This is against the backdrop of the clamour for…

https://punchng.com/gunmen-disguise-as-worshippers-massacre-over-35-in-ondo-church/
The mass burial for them is being streamed right now on Nigerian news networks, presided over by the Catholic Diocese. The words he said that stuck with me is that "this is nonsense" and he's absolutely right; it's utter nonsense. He just doesn't realize how truly nonsense it is.
This attack was north vs. south. My religion versus theirs. It's people killing and being killed over their preferred flavor of bed time story.
Do not let anyone tell you that religion is anything other than human barbarism dressed up mildly better.
There was pandemonium at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo,  the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State as gunmen attacked the church on Sunday. The attack on the church in Owo,  the hometown of the state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, came barely a week after the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Bishop Samuel Kanu-Uche, was kidnapped in Abia State by gunmen the priest later identified as Fulani youths. It was learnt the gunmen, who attacked the Catholic church, arrived at the premises, which is less than 200 metres from the palace of the Olowo of Owo, at 12pm when the Sunday mass was being rounded off. The PUNCH gathered that worshippers, mostly children and women, were killed in the attack, by gunmen, who were said to have thrown an improvised explosive device before they started shooting sporadically.
OWO, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA — Nigerian officials have blamed the terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) for an attack on a church in the country's southwest that killed at least 40 people. Sunday's shooting at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo was the first linked to ISWAP in Nigeria's southwest, raising fears that terrorism in the country is spreading. Nigerian Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola spoke to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, soon after a National Security Council meeting. He said authorities had monitored the situation for days and that "from all indications, they're zeroing in on the Islamic State of West African Province.”

Do not let anyone tell you that religion is anything other than human barbarism dressed up mildly better.
Unfortunately, we keep getting example after example of exactly this. Each of them doubling down by calling upon their god to help them defeat, or protect them from, the other, with divine right on their side.

EDITORIAL: ISWAP’s Kuje prison attack and Buhari's counter-insurgency flaws
EDITORIAL: ISWAP’s Kuje prison attack and Buhari’s counter-insurgency flaws
As is the new normal, the might of the Nigerian state did not count when terrorists invaded the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, on July 5. The terrorists freed 879 inmates; among them 64 Boko Haram members and other criminals. From the top to bottom, everybody, as it is now usual, was caught napping. The escapees and their liberators are still marauding around the Federal Capital…

By • Olalekan Fagbade The loyalists of ex-minister Rauf Aregbesola have renamed their faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osun state to the Omoluabi caucus. They also disowned their members numbering about seventy-nine who were appointed by Governor Ademola Adeleke as caretaker committee members for local government areas across the state. The Nation recalled that the Aregbesola’s loyalists had opposed the reelection of ex-governor Adegboyega Oyetola under the faction within APC named, The Osun Progressives (TOP). The faction was dissolved in December 2023 by one of their leaders who is the former speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Najeem Salam. In a recent development, the chairman of the defunct faction, Adelowo Adebiyi in a statement on Thursday disclosed that the new name of the faction is now Omoluabi caucus. The statement reads: “We wish to state that whosoever that has been appointed into political offices by the Adeleke’s administration got such, practically on his or her individual’s connection and influence, and not on behalf of Omoluabi, or as compensation for defunct The Osun Progress (TOP) or Omoluabi caucus. “We restated unequivocally that at no time did the defunct TOP enter into any agreement with the PDP to work for it; which might warrant the erroneous compensation as being falsely spread by the mischief makers. Those who feel strongly about their individual interests couldn’t be stopped from pursuing such, hence the situation whereby some of them accepted to serve in the PDP government. He noted that: “We restate our commitment to the APC. On behalf of our Patron, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, we thank all those who had been steadfast and absolutely loyal within our tendency and urge all members to start the mobilisation work of politicians and voters in earnest for the APC, our party ahead of future elections"     #APC #appointment #Aregbesola #GovernorAdeleke #GovernorofOsun #PDP

Adeleke to swear in commissioners Wednesday
Tumblr media
The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, will on Wednesday (tomorrow), swears in his newly appointed commissioners. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Chief of Staff to Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun State, Festus Adeyemo, and two commissioners that served in the state cabinet during the tenure of ex-governor, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside 22 others were unveiled as commissioner-nominees by the State House of Assembly. The Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, read the names as contained in the letter sent to the lawmakers by Adeleke at the plenary on July 7. The two members of Aregbesola’s cabinet that made the list are Kolapo Alimi, who served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Mr. Biyi Odunlade, who was Special Adviser and later commissioner for Sports. Adeyemo, who is from Irewole Local Government Area, served as Chief of Staff to Oyinlola at the twilight of his administration, when the man that occupied the post in 2003, Dr Peter Babalola, left the cabinet in pursuit of governorship ambition. Also listed is the widow of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the elder brother of the incumbent governor, Mrs Folashade Adeleke. But in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson on Tuesday, Olawale Rasheed, the swearing-in event will hold at the Local Government Service Commission building on Wednesday. The statement read, “Governor Ademola Adeleke has fixed tomorrow Wednesday 19th of July for the inauguration and swearing in of the newly appointed commissioners. “The event is billed to hold at the Local Government Service Commission building, Government Secretariat, Osogbo by 10 am. “All commissioners designate are to be seated before 10 am.” Read the full article
