Uncork Capital cracks open two new funds
Uncork Capital, the now 15-year-old, early-stage venture firm formerly known as SoftTech VC, has closed up two new pools of committed capital totaling $200 million: $100 million for its sixth early-stage fund, and $100 million for an “opportunity” fund so it can stuff a little more capital into those of its portfolio companies that start to break away from the pack.
The firm had closed its first opportunity fund with $50 million in mid 2016. It closed its fifth early-stage fund at the same time with $100 million.
We talked on Friday with Uncork founder Jeff Clavier about the firm, which is currently writing first checks that range from $750,000 to $2 million. He told us that as with Uncork’s most recent set of funds, the idea is to invest in roughly 35 companies across three years, taking 10 percent ownership on average, and up to 12 percent of a portfolio company when it is the lead investor.
Clavier also said that while fully half of the fund will go into startups that sell cloud software to businesses, Uncork plans to invest roughly 10 percent of the fund in consumer marketplaces; roughly 10 percent in hardware; roughly 20 percent in so-called frontier tech — whether it be augmented reality or virtual reality or space of robotics or blockchain-related deals; and roughly 10 percent in bioinformatics and synthetic biology.
That last area of interest is brand new to Uncork, so we asked if the firm — which counts Stephanie Palmeri and Andy McLoughlin as partners — was perhaps planning to hire a biotech investor. Clavier said that isn’t, that instead it will rely on external resources to help with due diligence and to learn along the way. “In the same way that I looked at 30 investments in space tech and invested in Loft Orbital [a company that’s assembling a constellation to carry payloads for customers who don’t want to operate their own satellites], my expectation is that I’ll look at a bunch of [synthetic bio] deals and we’ll end up with one or two,” he said.
Uncork has enjoyed a steady stream of exits in recent years, including, mostly newly, the sale of ad tech company Vungle for a reported $750 million last month to the private equity firm Blackstone. [Clavier declined to confirm or correct its sale price.]
Uncork is also an early investor in the food delivery company Postmates, which is reportedly on track to go public this year. And Uncork was an early backer in the email service startup SendGrid, which sold to the publicly traded communications platform Twilio earlier this last year for $3 billion in stock.
Some of the firm’s other high-profile bets include Fitbit, which went public in 2015; Brightroll, which was acquired by Yahoo in 2015; and Eventbrite, which went public last fall (though its shares almost immediately fell below their IPO price and have remained below it).
As for its first opportunity fund, the startup that has received the biggest check from Uncork — $5 million — is the fashion resale marketplace Poshmark, which is also reportedly eyeing an IPO in 2019.

DJB: I never really intended to be a DJ, but I started buying salsa music while growing up in my native Puerto Rico. After joining the U.S. Air Force in 1992, they stationed me in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years. There, I started buying insane amounts of Salsa CD's - to keep me close to the feeling of home. ;-) In 1999 I was deployed to Saudi Arabia, where I began DJing "Latin Night", alongside other military members, as part of the Air Force's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program. I continued Djing "Latin Night" in the Air Force at South Korea (2000), and finally inside Travis Air Force base in Fairfield, CA (2001-2003). Here in the Bay Area, my first opportunity to DJ was given to me by Stephanie Palmeri at Steppin' Out Dance Studio in Sunnyvale.

The Note: With Trump, all politics is personal
The TAKE with Rick Klein
Interested in The Note?
Add The Note as an interest to stay up to date on the latest The Note news, video, and analysis from ABC News.
President Donald Trump is making it all about … President Donald Trump.
It’s a fact of Trump’s brand of leadership that all politics is personal. It comes through in shifting loyalties, the bestowing of nicknames, and the still-raucous rallies.
Trump’s response to Roseanne Barr’s firing is about apologies he’s not getting. His critique of Attorney General Jeff Sessions is about loyalty he feels like he’s not receiving.
And while Trump has praised Kim Jong Un for his conduct – and his leaving the door wide open for a summit, a week after announcing it was off – he is railing against “MS-13 lover Nancy Pelosi” when referring to the House Democratic leader.
White House aides have gone out of their way recently to point out how busy the president is with big challenges – suggesting that he can’t be distracted with smaller matters.
For his part, Trump is showing he’s not too busy to focus on himself.
The RUNDOWN with MaryAlice Parks
On two heavy-hitting questions yesterday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had light answers.
When asked how the White House could square the president’s claim that law enforcement wrongfully spied on his campaign, with comments from top Republicans, who have had access to classified information, now saying they’ve seen nothing that seems out of place, Sanders said that there’s still “cause for concern,” but again offered no additional evidence as to why.
Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images, FILE
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders conducts the daily news conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House, May 17, 2018, in Washington, DC.
And when a young child stood in a suit and tie and asked an adult question about being scared for his life in American schools, Sanders choked up. Not making light of the problem, she said the administration was doing everything it could, but gave few examples.
She mentioned the Federal Commission on School Safety, which will have its first field visits this week. Three of the four cabinet secretaries who make up the commission will not be in attendance. They all opted out of an earlier May meeting, too.
Principals, psychologists, and PTAs have been urging Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to “meaningfully engage stakeholders,” and President Trump will meet with families of the victims of the Santa Fe High School shooting today. So, maybe next time there will be more to say.
The TIP with Christopher Donato
Tuesday evening, at a campaign rally in Nashville to support GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn‘s run for U.S. Senate, President Trump said he had “never heard of” the likely Democratic nominee in the race, former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.
The president even asked the crowd: “Who is he?” referring to Bredesen.
Drew Angerer/Getty Images
Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and former governor of Tennessee Phil Bredesen attends a groundbreaking event for a new Tyson Foods chicken processing plant, May 30, 2018, in Humboldt, Tennessee.
However, just hours before the rally at a closed-door fundraiser for Blackburn, Trump called Bredesen “tough” and said that the Senate race is “close. It’s very close,” according to an audio recording of the president’s remarks obtained by The Tennessean.
Trump’s comments and rally come as Blackburn and Bredesen are battling to win to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Bob Corker, who is retiring at the end of his term.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in New York to meet with senior North Korea official Kim Yong Chol, will hold a press conference at 2:15 p.m. EDT at the Palace Hotel in New York.
This afternoon, President Trump meets with Santa Fe families and community leaders. He then holds a roundtable discussion with supporters and speaks at a National Republican Senatorial Committee lunch.
Later in the afternoon, the president flies to Dallas, where he will attend fundraising events.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis meets with defense ministers from Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines in Singapore at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
The Federal Commission on School Safety — including Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos — conducts its first field visit in Hanover, Md. to observe steps schools are taking to enhance school safety.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“I wrote in the name of a person who I admire deeply, who I think would be an excellent president.” — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mitt Romney to Deseret News and KSL-TV, revealing that he voted for his wife Ann in the 2016 presidential election.
NEED TO READ
Pompeo to meet top North Korean official in New York as summit plans continue. President Trump “canceled” the Singapore summit with North Korea last week in a dramatic letter, but the two countries have since scrambled to make it happen again, and now Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to meet with senior North Korea official Kim Yong Chol for the third time Thursday in New York. Energy Department spent $63,500 on upgraded flights for Rick Perry in first 6 months. Energy Secretary Rick Perry took a dozen premium-class flights during his first seven months in office, spending extra on airfare for what he argued were security concerns, according to travel logs obtained by ABC News. (Stephanie Ebbs) https://abcn.ws/2JjUFCc
Former FBI deputy director wrote memo detailing discussion with deputy attorney general: Source. Acting Director Andrew McCabe, in the days after FBI Director James Comey was fired, wrote a confidential memo documenting a discussion he had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein: Rosenstein told McCabe that President Donald Trump wanted him to include a reference to Russia in his memo criticizing Comey, though Rosenstein’s May 9, 2017 memo ultimately made no mention of Russia. ‘Long time friends’ of Manafort set up legal defense fund. Facing “tremendous legal costs” amid proceedings brought by the special counsel Robert Mueller, “longtime friends” of Manafort have set up a legal defense fund for the former Trump campaign chairman, though it was not immediately clear when the fund was started or by whom. It’s Sports and Fitness Day at the White House but questions abound about the president’s own fitness. Trump, 71, prefers hitting the golf links over hitting the gym, though he was reportedly an accomplished athlete in his younger days. It’s a shift from President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, who both made time for daily workouts. (Meridith McGraw and Jordyn Phelps) https://abcn.ws/2H4uTNl
FBI suggests rebooting your wireless internet router as soon as possible. Hundreds of thousands of home and office routers have been compromised by foreign cyber actors using malware called VPNFilter, according to the FBI, who say that a reboot can disrupt the threat and help identify infected devices. Missouri Governor Eric Greitens to be replaced by longtime traditional politician. Missouri’s lieutenant governor Mike Parson will be sworn in to lead the state at the end of the week. 60-40 chance that North Korea summit succeeds: Richardson on Powerhouse Politics. They don’t negotiate like we do. They don’t believe in quid pro quos…If we get some kind of negotiating process that might lead long-term to a substantial denuclearization…with full inspections, with timelines, that would be a good result of the summit,” said Richardson, a former U.S. Ambassador to the UN who has been to North Korea eight times. Interview: LinkedIn for Commercial Real Estate Professionals
Linkedin for Commercial Real Estate
How to Use Linkedin for Commercial Real Estate Professionals
Since moving to Las Vegas I have been going out of my way to meet new people, both in technology and the commercial real estate industry. I am finding it to be absolutely amazing and exciting thanks to organizations like CREW Las Vegas, CALV and sites such as Meetup.com. I have lived in Chicago my entire life and never lived anywhere else. Meeting new people was not something I thought about much, until I moved here. Being a part of an online community, like theBrokerList, it is way easier than I thought it would be! So huge shout outs to Natalie Wainwright, Dan Palmeri, Danielle Watson, Hayim Mizrachi, Joselynn Martinez, Kitty Lusby, Kenny Eliason , Manny Costa, Andrew DiMino and so many more who have made me feel so welcome to my new city, Las Vegas!
One of the most awesome ways I have been able to meet people, besides attending CREW Las Vegas lunches and CALV social gatherings, is through Meetup.com. I was fortunate to cross paths with Marilyn August who left a comment on a Meetup forum for the Las Vegas Social Media Meetup, hosted by NeOn Brand. We exchanged a few phone calls and then finally met in real life this week.
Marilyn is a Linkedin consultant and helps people craft the right message for their Linkedin profiles and she knows the ins and outs of using Linkedin on a very serious level. Marilyn believes in Linkedin and its power. So I asked Marilyn if she would work with me to give our members some great insight to help make their Linkedin experience more financially beneficial and not just about having your picture and name on Linkedin, but crafting the right messages and using Linkedin most effectively.
If you wish to listen to the entire interview, click the below link.
Or see the below brief overview of our interview Q & A. Gain insights into the amazing power of Linkedin.
Get New Referral Partners Everyday: The LinkedIn Way
Why should commercial real estate professionals bother with LinkedIn? Because all of their customers are there and use Linkedin everyday. If a potential client is checking you out, they are using Google and Linkedin.
How is LinkedIn different than other social media? Linkedin is an active site and is now owned by Microsoft. Microsoft is doing some amazing things to improve the effectiveness of Linkedin for enterprise level sales.
How do I make time in my busy day for LinkedIn? Compare spending 45 minutes driving to visit 1 client. Instead of that, spend 45 minutes a day doing outreach on Linkedin. You can meet 10-15 people rather than a single person.
What should I do with connection requests from people I don’t know? Depending on your business model, you can accept all requests or not. If you are US based, perhaps only accept US members, or if you only want a certain industry, select that segment. If someone follows you with a “skinny profile” then do not waste your time on people who do not have the ability to fill in their profile.
What do you mean by “get new referral partners every day: the Linkedin Way” Depending on what segment of commercial real estate you are in, look for those who can refer business to you that are not competitors. Accountants, lawyers, title companies, etc. Find business models that need to refer their clients to high quality resources and you reciprocate as well.
What should my LinkedIn profile include? At a minimum, a good photo, succinct summary that tells a person what you do now (not a resume) and contact information, including your phone number.
Where do I put my contact info or do I put my contact info? It is vital that people have a way to contact you. The phone number is the most universal means, but emails or Twitter or whatever way you want people to reach you is ideal. In Linkedin there is a Contact section. View your profile and to the right side there is a “Contact and Personal Info” section you can edit. Click the pencil icon to open.
What should I avoid posting on LinkedIn? Do not post anything that is not relevant to your business and your professional brand. Get away from cute, Facebook like content and focus on giving yourself credibility for your expert area. Find sources of good content or create your own.
I don’t have time to write a blog but I need to post content. What should I do? Sharing other content with your take on it. For instance, a blog or article you read, give your opinion and share the link so other people can weigh in. Another great topic to share is your personal experience. What happened in your day that would be a business lesson or a great pointer to a newbie.
What are three LinkedIn turn-offs? Spam/auto emails to people, selling, incomplete profiles.
Improve YOUR Linkedin Profile
Marilyn is extending an amazing invitation to our members to get a FREE Linkedin Profile review! That is her gift to us for letting her share her expertise here, which helps her brand. So click the below link button to get your FREE Linkedin Strategy Review Session. Please be sure to tell her theBrokerList sent you. We do not benefit from this financially in any way, but I want her to know who you are and to take care of our people!!
