HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES

HARTFORD, CT -
The rampant rumors of the return of the Hartford Whalers following the defeat of the arena proposal in Tempe, Arizona has just one salient point, money exists in Connecticut, primarily in Greenwich, the home of high finance. After that, there is nothing to suggest that there is even the faintest hope that NHL hockey is returning to Hartford.

"While I think the fans, and the media, get suckered into this every time it surfaces, the only reality is the hedge fund money in the Greenwich area. They have the sort of money it would take to bring hockey to Connecticut. Still, Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner, has shown zero interest that he wants to vacate Arizona, no matter how obvious it may seem.
"Once you get past that, there are too many other negatives. There's no regional TV network, no new building in sight, the Boston Bruins, and the player pool is diluted now, are four I can name off the top of my head, and there are more. It's a pipe dream and fantasy. The politicians are looking to get their 15 minutes of fame."
Outgoing Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin and Governor Ned Lamont did themselves no favors by violating Bettman's primary rule of no public pronouncements. He dislikes owners-in-waiting, who are too loquacious.
Former Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume (2007-2021) blew it by going public. They're still waiting to hear from the NHL.
Relocation is a possibility, not a certainty, and given the owners and potential suitors who have tried to outwit the Commissioner are gone from the scene, i.e., original Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes and Jim Balisilie, the Blackberry founder who's bankrupt and gone. Yet Bettman is still here and in the NHL Hall of Fame. So if you're betting on this one, put all your chips on Bettman and no team in Hartford.
PLAYER MOVEMENT
Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack, Vitali Kravtsov, has left the Vancouver Canucks, where the New York Rangers sent the Russian after they traded him at the trade deadline for Will Lockwood. Kravtsov departed Vancouver and is headed back to Russia again after signing a deal with Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia-KHL) for a third time.
Jonathan Marchessault, the ex-Connecticut Whale, who the Rangers misevaluated the undrafted QMJHL free agent product they had signed. He scored 32 goals and led the team in his rookie pro year in Hart City. The thought was that he would only be an AHL player. Whoops?
After scoring in a 6-0 series clincher Monday night, he is now heading to his second Stanley Cup final appearance and just completed his second conference final to play the Florida Panthers for the Stanley Cup.
Marchessault is making $30 million with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas also has as a backup goalie Jonathan Quick (Hamden/AOF), and their coaches are ex-Whalers assistant John Stevens Sr. and goalie Sean Burke.
CONNECTICUT CONNECTIONS
Scouts are ex-Whalers Jim McKenzie (Pro Scout), Connor Jones (Amateur scout), the former Quinnipiac University/Sound Tiger, and ex-Whaler, Alex Godynyuk (European scout).
The Florida Panthers have ex-Yale goalie, Alex Lyon, ex-Hartford Wolf Pack/Ranger Marc Staal, former Sound Tiger Carter Verhaeghe, and former Whaler coach Paul Maurice, ex-Pack Sylvain Lefebvre is the Panthers' assistant coach.
Pro Scouts Sean Backman (Cos Cob/Yale/AOF) and P.J. Fenton.
Ex-Pack Yevgeni Grachev was the first mercurial Russian in Hartford before Kravtsov. He had a short stay. He switches Russian KHL teams from HC Vladivostock to Amur Khabarovsk.
In the IIHF World Championships, Canada won the gold medal. Ex-Pack Sammy Blais scored twice, including the first goal in a 5-2 win over a pesky German squad. In the semifinal, Blais scored a perfect top-shelf goal from the right wing that helped Canada to a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Latvia.
The US bid to play Canada for the gold medal was derailed by Germany in a 4-3 overtime win in the other semifinal by Frederik Tiffels, ending captain Nick Bonino's (Unionville via Farmington/AOF) journey as they went home without a medal losing to tourney co-host Latvia 4-3 in the bronze medal game.
EX WOLF PACK
Ex-Pack Andres Ambühl, 39, and his Swiss teammates lost in the quarterfinals, and has played in a record 131 WC games for the Swiss.
The Quebec Remparts opened the Memorial Cup in fine fashion with an impressive 8-3 win over host Kamloops Blazers, who the Pack's Dylan Garand played for last year.
The Pack's Matt Rempe's former junior team, the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL), took on future possible Wolf Pack teammate Brennan Othmann and the Peterborough Petes in their first games for each team and won 6-3. Othmann had one assist and was a minus-two.
The Petes also feature Devils draft pick Chase Stillman,
Kamloops came back in their next game, wiping out Peterborough 10-2. Then Monday, Quebec beat Kamloops 3-1.
MORE EX-PACK
Ex-Pack Ty Ronning and Stefan Matteau Jr., a Wolf Pack training camp invitee several years ago and son of the former Ranger, Stefan Sr., who was a Wolf Pack promotional guest earlier this year, were both released by ERC Ingolstadt (Germany-DEL). Ronning signed with Eisbären Berlin (Germany-DEL).
Ex-Pack Jake Elmer leaves HK Nitra (Slovakia-SLEL) for Odense (Denmark-DHL).
Cédric Lacroix, an ex-Sound Tiger, and late Wolf Pack training camp cut two years ago, who played this year at Grand Rapids (AHL), Toledo (ECHL), and Trois-Rivières (ECHL), signs with Vorarlberg (Austria-IceHL) next year.
Cole Maier (Taft School) heads from Manitoba to Nuremberg (Germany-DEL) next year; Sampo Ranta, after one year and a minus-11, leaves the Colorado Eagles and heads to MODO (Sweden-SHL) as he joins the large AHL contingent to Sweden.
Ben Tardif, who played with Hartford for 15 effective games mid-season before being sent to the Jacksonville Icemen after playing out West for the Colorado Eagles (AHL) and for their Double AA affiliate in Utah Grizzlies (ECHL), is heading to Europe and KooKoo (Finland-FEL).
Tardif, Ranta, and Maier make 23 AHL'ers heading to Europe.
PLAYERS MOVING AROUND
The Islanders sign for next season Kyle MacLean to a one-year, two-way deal for $825,000K-NHL/$82,500K-AHL and Daylan Kuefler completing his junior career playing for Kamloops in the aforementioned Memorial Cup to a three-year ELC deal at $925K-NHL/$82,500K-AHL.Both players will likely be in Bridgeport in the fall.
Roman Kinal, the former UCONN Captain, signs an extension with the AHL San Jose Barracuda.
Alex Gagnon of Division III independent Albertus Magnus College (New Haven) becomes the 26th Division I or III player to head to Europe. He joins teammate Charlie Risk in going to Mont-Blance (France-FFHG Division-1).
The Division I player conference pro signings breakdown is as follows; Hockey East-37, NCHC-36, CCHA-31, Big Ten-29, ECACHL-24, and AHA-20, NCAA Independent schools-13, and just one is transferring to the Canadian college school or university system. Division III is 31. Undergrads leaving school early are 37. In-school transfers, 47, and grad transfers, 38.
Ex-CT Whale Kelsey Tessier retires from hockey as a champion after two years with the HC Rouen Dragons (France-FREL). The team won their 17th Magnus League title in the 100th year of French hockey.
Sam Bitten, the younger brother of Will Bitten, will join his older brother in Springfield next year. He played with HC Plzeň (Pilsner) this last season. He has played all of his pro career so far in Europe.
CT HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY NEWS
The CT high school hockey landscape was changed dramatically with the announcement that two of the Big Four, West Haven and Hamden, have downgraded their programs to Division-2 after 75 years as Division I powerhouses.
West Haven went co-op last year with Seymour, Oxford, and Shelton and finished 3-17 with their only D1 win of the three they had was against an out-of-state opponent, St. Domenic (Auburn, Maine).
The Hamden High Green Dragons, another part of the long-time unique high school hockey clique along with West Haven, Notre Dame-West Haven, and Fairfield Prep, were the Montreal Canadiens of high school hockey in the late 1960s through the 1970s into the late 1980s.
Much like West Haven, they have had dwindling numbers after a sub-par season of their own with its three wins-two over West Haven and the other against Sheehan of Wallingford, have had just six coaches in the program's history.
The local involvement in hockey, trying out for their teams, has not been good, and both towns' youth programs have begun admitting kids from neighboring towns over the last several years to pump up the numbers. So Hamden could be next in line in a few years.
West Haven AD Joe Morrell Jr., who was the head coach for 21 years of the Blue Devils (one of six coaches in the program's history) after being an assistant coach at cross-town rival ND-WH for six years was matter-of-fact regarding this momentous decision.
"It was a tough decision to make, a very tough pill to swallow. Put a lot of time coaching and playing for this program, we were in agreement-to be able to compete we had go to Division II. Some day we will be back at Division I."
The current WH coach is Steve Harris, who played four years at ND-WH and a PG year at Gunnery (Prep) School (now Frederick Gunn School) (Washington) before playing Division III at Johnson and Wales (Rhode Island) and is set to remain was all in with the tough decision.
MORE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
A far cry from 30 years ago, when Connecticut held the Connecticut Classic at Ingalls Rink at Yale against Massachusetts schools. The West Haven Blue Devils won its last title in 1994, and then WH head coach Art DeLucia forecasted the program's decline when he saw the youth numbers then and stepped aside.
He told this reporter then, 'We graduated the smartest championship team academically ever and likely the last WH school championship.'
It led to the West Haven AD, the late Tom Hunt, with DeLucia's resignation letter in his back pocket trying to back door in, now out of high school hockey Steve McCarty, then the WH assistant coach, to become the head coach.
Hunt ran afoul of the WH Board of Education, who requested an open process in the coach selection. That led to the three-year tenure of former New Haven Blades and Nighthawk player plus former NHL defenseman Gordie's Smith's tumultuous reign and conflicts with Hunt.
Smith's brother is Billy Smith, the great Islanders goalie who won four Stanley Cups. Morrell followed Smith.
A sad day indeed.

IL PLEUVAIT DES OISEAUX en tête des nominations du Gala Québec Cinéma 2020
En direct du salon de Guillaume Lambert, les nominations du Gala Québec Cinéma (qui ne fera pas l’objet d’un rassemblement télévisuel cette année, confinement oblige) ont été dévoilées cet après-midi.
En cette année dominée par les réalisatrices, 6 des meilleurs films sont réalisés par des femmes et 3 femmes sont en lice pour l’Iris de la Meilleure réalisation.
On parle bien sûr d’Antigone de Sophie Deraspe (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), La femme de mon frère de Monia Chokri (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation), Kuessipan de Myriam Verreault (Meilleur film, Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), Jeune Juliette d’Anne Émond (Meilleur film, Meilleur scénario), Il pleuvait des oiseaux et Louise Archambault (Meilleur film, Meilleur scénario, et 13 nominations au total, le record cette année), et du plus inattendu Fabuleuses de Mélanie Charbonneau (Meilleur film).
Ces films réalisés par des femmes sont rejoints dans les catégories de pointe par les « films de gars » Mafia Inc de Podz (Meilleur film), Sympathie pour le diable de Guillaume de Fontenay (Meilleure réalisation, Meilleur scénario), et Le vingtième siècle de Matthew Rankin (Meilleur premier film, Meilleure réalisation).
Un grand oublié : Xavier Dolan, qui a lancé deux longs métrages l’an dernier. On ne s’attendait pas à un couronnement du mal-aimé The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, mais l’excellent Matthias & Maxime aurait mérité plus d’honneurs. Il est quand même en nomination dans les catégories Meilleure interprétation féminine dans un rôle de soutien (Micheline Bernard), Meilleure interprétation masculine dans un rôle de soutien (Pier-Luc Funk), Meilleure direction de la photographie (André Turpin), Meilleur montage (Xavier Dolan), Meilleure musique originale (Jean-Michel Blais) et Meilleur maquillage (Erik Gosselin, Edwina Voda).
Du côté des interprètes, je suis soulagé que mon long métrage québécois préféré depuis longtemps, Le rire de Martin Laroche, ait été au moins reconnu pour les brillantes performances de Léane Labrèche-Dor (Premier rôle féminin) et Micheline Lanctôt (Rôle de soutien féminin).
Il faut aussi souligner les deux nominations comme acteur de Robin Aubert, pour Jeune Juliette (Premier rôle masculin) et Merci pour tout (Rôle de soutien masculin).
Et une pensée pour Andrée Lachapelle, qui nous a quittés récemment, nommée comme Meilleure actrice pour Il pleuvait des oiseaux.
Parlant d’Il pleuvait des oiseaux , félicitations à Will Driving West, un de mes groupes préférés, parmi les finalistes de la catégorie Meilleure musique originale.
Aussi, je suis très heureux pour l’extraordinaire Je finirai en prison d’Alexandre Dostie, en nomination pour l’Iris du meilleur court métrage.

LES POLISSONS DE LA CHANSON : HOMMAGE À GEORGES BRASSENS
Ce spectacle-événement tournant autour de l’œuvre de Georges Brassens verra le jour dès la semaine prochaine, la tournée débutant à la Salle Pauline-Julien de Sainte-Geneviève le mercredi 20 avril. Pour fêter l’œuvre de ce monument de la chanson française, La maison fauve a réuni de grands artistes d’ici au sein d’un spectacle collectif mis en scène par nulle autre qu’Alice Ronfard, dans une conception d’éclairage signée Julie Basse. Ainsi, Valérie Blais, Luc De Larochellière, Michel Rivard, Saratoga et Ingrid St-Pierre voyageront dans l’immense corpus mélodique de l’auteur-compositeur-interprète pour en faire résonner son timbre chaleureux, son verbe libre, poétique et irrévérencieux, sous la direction musicale d’Yves Desrosiers.
Récemment, Michel Rivard s’entretenait avec le Téléjournal de Radio-Canada : « Si on aime la langue, si on aime le plaisir des mots, si on aime la subtilité, la nuisance, la poésie dans sa forme la plus pure, on ne peut pas ne pas aimer Brassens ». Lors de cette même rencontre, Alice Ronfard qui signe la mise en scène du spectacle, parlait de l’importance de l’autre chez Brassens : « Il parle beaucoup d’amitié, il parle beaucoup des copains… de cette chose qu’on a perdu depuis deux ans, c’est-à-dire, d’être ensemble… pour moi, c’est ça le lègue (de Brassens »). Le duo Saratoga parle quant à lui soulignait l’audace de cet artiste qui encore aujourd’hui résonne : « Il a touché à tout ce qui dérangeait, tout ce qui était un peu en marge, mais ça a terriblement bien vieilli ». La plume de Sylvain Cormier pour Le devoir ne pourrait mieux conclure : « Valérie Blais a vu Brassens sur scène, et Michel Rivard lui a serré la main. Un seul degré de séparation. Pour nombre de spectateurs, ce sera presque y toucher. Pour ceux qui découvriront Brassens — oui, ça se peut ! —, l’occasion est à chérir ». C’est à ne pas manquer! Tout ce beau monde à un plaisir manifeste à partager la scène, clin d’oeil et sourires en coin. La camaraderie de Luc, Valérie, Ingrid, Michel, Michel-Olivier et Chantal saura convaincre. Ce sont les plus sympathiques polissons de la chanson!

HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES

HARTFORD, CT -
The rampant rumors of the return of the Hartford Whalers following the defeat of the arena proposal in Tempe, Arizona has just one salient point, money exists in Connecticut, primarily in Greenwich, the home of high finance. After that, there is nothing to suggest that there is even the faintest hope that NHL hockey is returning to Hartford.

"While I think the fans, and the media, get suckered into this every time it surfaces, the only reality is the hedge fund money in the Greenwich area. They have the sort of money it would take to bring hockey to Connecticut. Still, Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner, has shown zero interest that he wants to vacate Arizona, no matter how obvious it may seem.
"Once you get past that, there are too many other negatives. There's no regional TV network, no new building in sight, the Boston Bruins, and the player pool is diluted now, are four I can name off the top of my head, and there are more. It's a pipe dream and fantasy. The politicians are looking to get their 15 minutes of fame."
Outgoing Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin and Governor Ned Lamont did themselves no favors by violating Bettman's primary rule of no public pronouncements. He dislikes owners-in-waiting, who are too loquacious.
Former Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume (2007-2021) blew it by going public. They're still waiting to hear from the NHL.
Relocation is a possibility, not a certainty, and given the owners and potential suitors who have tried to outwit the Commissioner are gone from the scene, i.e., original Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes and Jim Balisilie, the Blackberry founder who's bankrupt and gone. Yet Bettman is still here and in the NHL Hall of Fame. So if you're betting on this one, put all your chips on Bettman and no team in Hartford.

Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack, Vitali Kravtsov, has left the Vancouver Canucks, where the New York Rangers sent the Russian after they traded him at the trade deadline for Will Lockwood. Kravtsov departed Vancouver and is headed back to Russia again after signing a deal with Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia-KHL) for a third time.
Jonathan Marchessault, the ex-Connecticut Whale, who the Rangers misevaluated the undrafted QMJHL free agent product they had signed. He scored 32 goals and led the team in his rookie pro year in Hart City. The thought was that he would only be an AHL player. Whoops?
After scoring in a 6-0 series clincher Monday night, he is now heading to his second Stanley Cup final appearance and just completed his second conference final to play the Florida Panthers for the Stanley Cup.
Marchessault is making $30 million with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas also has as a backup goalie Jonathan Quick (Hamden/AOF), and their coaches are ex-Whalers assistant John Stevens Sr. and goalie Sean Burke.
CONNECTICUT CONNECTIONS
Scouts are ex-Whalers Jim McKenzie (Pro Scout), Connor Jones (Amateur scout), the former Quinnipiac University/Sound Tiger, and ex-Whaler, Alex Godynyuk (European scout).

In the IIHF World Championships, Canada won the gold medal. Ex-Pack Sammy Blais scored twice, including the first goal in a 5-2 win over a pesky German squad. In the semifinal, Blais scored a perfect top-shelf goal from the right wing that helped Canada to a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Latvia.
The US bid to play Canada for the gold medal was derailed by Germany in a 4-3 overtime win in the other semifinal by Frederik Tiffels, ending captain Nick Bonino's (Unionville via Farmington/AOF) journey as they went home without a medal losing to tourney co-host Latvia 4-3 in the bronze medal game.
EX WOLF PACK
Ex-Pack Andres Ambühl, 39, and his Swiss teammates lost in the quarterfinals, and has played in a record 131 WC games for the Swiss.
The Quebec Remparts opened the Memorial Cup in fine fashion with an impressive 8-3 win over host Kamloops Blazers, who the Pack's Dylan Garand played for last year.
The Pack's Matt Rempe's former junior team, the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL), took on future possible Wolf Pack teammate Brennan Othmann and the Peterborough Petes in their first games for each team and won 6-3. Othmann had one assist and was a minus-two.
The Petes also feature Devils draft pick Chase Stillman,
Kamloops came back in their next game, wiping out Peterborough 10-2. Then Monday, Quebec beat Kamloops 3-1.

Ex-Pack Ty Ronning and Stefan Matteau Jr., a Wolf Pack training camp invitee several years ago and son of the former Ranger, Stefan Sr., who was a Wolf Pack promotional guest earlier this year, were both released by ERC Ingolstadt (Germany-DEL). Ronning signed with Eisbären Berlin (Germany-DEL).
Ex-Pack Jake Elmer leaves HK Nitra (Slovakia-SLEL) for Odense (Denmark-DHL).
Cédric Lacroix, an ex-Sound Tiger, and late Wolf Pack training camp cut two years ago, who played this year at Grand Rapids (AHL), Toledo (ECHL), and Trois-Rivières (ECHL), signs with Vorarlberg (Austria-IceHL) next year.
Cole Maier (Taft School) heads from Manitoba to Nuremberg (Germany-DEL) next year; Sampo Ranta, after one year and a minus-11, leaves the Colorado Eagles and heads to MODO (Sweden-SHL) as he joins the large AHL contingent to Sweden.
Ben Tardif, who played with Hartford for 15 effective games mid-season before being sent to the Jacksonville Icemen after playing out West for the Colorado Eagles (AHL) and for their Double AA affiliate in Utah Grizzlies (ECHL), is heading to Europe and KooKoo (Finland-FEL).
Tardif, Ranta, and Maier make 23 AHL'ers heading to Europe.
PLAYERS MOVING AROUND
The Islanders sign for next season Kyle MacLean to a one-year, two-way deal for $825,000K-NHL/$82,500K-AHL and Daylan Kuefler completing his junior career playing for Kamloops in the aforementioned Memorial Cup to a three-year ELC deal at $925K-NHL/$82,500K-AHL.Both players will likely be in Bridgeport in the fall.
Roman Kinal, the former UCONN Captain, signs an extension with the AHL San Jose Barracuda.
Alex Gagnon of Division III independent Albertus Magnus College (New Haven) becomes the 26th Division I or III player to head to Europe. He joins teammate Charlie Risk in going to Mont-Blance (France-FFHG Division-1).
The Division I player conference pro signings breakdown is as follows; Hockey East-37, NCHC-36, CCHA-31, Big Ten-29, ECACHL-24, and AHA-20, NCAA Independent schools-13, and just one is transferring to the Canadian college school or university system. Division III is 31. Undergrads leaving school early are 37. In-school transfers, 47, and grad transfers, 38.
Ex-CT Whale Kelsey Tessier retires from hockey as a champion after two years with the HC Rouen Dragons (France-FREL). The team won their 17th Magnus League title in the 100th year of French hockey.
Sam Bitten, the younger brother of Will Bitten, will join his older brother in Springfield next year. He played with HC Plzeň (Pilsner) this last season. He has played all of his pro career so far in Europe.
CT HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY NEWS
The CT high school hockey landscape was changed dramatically with the announcement that two of the Big Four, West Haven and Hamden, have downgraded their programs to Division-2 after 75 years as Division I powerhouses.
West Haven went co-op last year with Seymour, Oxford, and Shelton and finished 3-17 with their only D1 win of the three they had was against an out-of-state opponent, St. Domenic (Auburn, Maine).
The Hamden High Green Dragons, another part of the long-time unique high school hockey clique along with West Haven, Notre Dame-West Haven, and Fairfield Prep, were the Montreal Canadiens of high school hockey in the late 1960s through the 1970s into the late 1980s.
Much like West Haven, they have had dwindling numbers after a sub-par season of their own with its three wins-two over West Haven and the other against Sheehan of Wallingford, have had just six coaches in the program's history.
The local involvement in hockey, trying out for their teams, has not been good, and both towns' youth programs have begun admitting kids from neighboring towns over the last several years to pump up the numbers. So Hamden could be next in line in a few years.
West Haven AD Joe Morrell Jr., who was the head coach for 21 years of the Blue Devils (one of six coaches in the program's history) after being an assistant coach at cross-town rival ND-WH for six years was matter-of-fact regarding this momentous decision.
"It was a tough decision to make, a very tough pill to swallow. Put a lot of time coaching and playing for this program, we were in agreement-to be able to compete we had go to Division II. Some day we will be back at Division I."
The current WH coach is Steve Harris, who played four years at ND-WH and a PG year at Gunnery (Prep) School (now Frederick Gunn School) (Washington) before playing Division III at Johnson and Wales (Rhode Island) and is set to remain was all in with the tough decision.
MORE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
A far cry from 30 years ago, when Connecticut held the Connecticut Classic at Ingalls Rink at Yale against Massachusetts schools. The West Haven Blue Devils won its last title in 1994, and then WH head coach Art DeLucia forecasted the program's decline when he saw the youth numbers then and stepped aside.
He told this reporter then, 'We graduated the smartest championship team academically ever and likely the last WH school championship.'
It led to the West Haven AD, the late Tom Hunt, with DeLucia's resignation letter in his back pocket trying to back door in, now out of high school hockey Steve McCarty, then the WH assistant coach, to become the head coach.
Hunt ran afoul of the WH Board of Education, who requested an open process in the coach selection. That led to the three-year tenure of former New Haven Blades and Nighthawk player plus former NHL defenseman Gordie's Smith's tumultuous reign and conflicts with Hunt.
Smith's brother is Billy Smith, the great Islanders goalie who won four Stanley Cups. Morrell followed Smith.
A sad day indeed.

Calling All Veterans

Veterans will remember that at the height of the Conservative administration’s mandate, the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman (OVO) was created. Colonel (Ret’d) Patrick Stogran CD was chosen to be the first ombudsman, a choice PM Harper soon came to regret. Stogran, ultimately overcome with frustration, resorted to engaging the national media, with a truly extraordinary press conference which was broadcast live throughout the nation.
Prime Minister Harper was not amused.
Ombudsman Stogran’s tenure was not renewed.
Eager to regain control, the PM selected Stogran’s successor wisely. Guy Parent’s passionless, analytical style contrasted vividly against the searing presence of Stogran.
His propensity for accompanying the minister’s entourage on far too many VAC sponsored WW1, WW2, Korean Conflict commemorative trips led to the perception he was more interested in top-shelf travel, accommodations, “sucking up to the minister” rather than serving the wounded. Veterans who should have reached out to the OVO declined, as the level of distrust, whether warranted or not, eventually corrupted the very essence of the veteran-OVO relationship. The next VO soon discovered, this distrust legitimately threatened the OVO’s mandate.
Enter retired naval officer Craig Dalton, a veteran.
Cross country consultation has ensued, with a dedicated effort to reach out to the veterans’ community. Dalton “got an earful” when disenfranchised veterans levied salvos of complaints.
I have met the OVO several times now, with the first meeting being shortly after I dispatched a welcoming email which bluntly defined the state of toxicity which existed within the OVO-veteran relationship and the need for definitive leadership and effective reforms.
Give credit when credit is due! Dalton’s consultation process over time has proven effective and comprehensive, it provides motivation and the catalyst for reform.
Veteran’s voices have resonated.
We met the OVO again -post consultation- on 12 November, Canadian Veterans Advocacy (CVA) Director Sylvain Chartrand joined us. The dialogue was robust; medical cannabis, Reserve Force inequities, mental trauma, VIP provisions, Pension for Life, equality in recognition of national sacrifice to the Pension Act standards.
We spoke to the necessity of standing for One Veteran, One Standard fairness, harmonization of reformative programs to ensure full inclusion, not like the current
New Veterans Charter-Pension Act obstructions designed to exclude and or
deny Canada’s most disabled veterans.
Which are for example, why are SISIP veterans, who are by definition Canada’s most seriously disabled veterans, (as acknowledged by Manulife’s stringent Totally Permanently Impaired status), excluded from the 90% income loss replacement promises
Consequential to consultation, Dalton requested a review of the OVO mandate. Ideally, investigative authority reforms and the provision of reporting to parliament will be embraced to eradicate the levels of distrust, which is generated every time the OVO submits a report to the minister. Other than dispensing vague platitudes and lip service, these reports do nothing to resolve the issues.
Authority restrictions? Please note OVO’s inability to comprehensively investigate Veterans Affairs’ 160 million dollars “accounting” error which deprived 270,000 Pension Act veterans for several years? How many of the WWII and Korean War Pension Act veterans died before justice was served? Were their dependents FULLY compensated? Was anybody at VAC held to account for grotesque negligence of duty?
Dalton is eager to restore the broken trust. He understands where the breaches in trust exist; he is willing to change the dynamics to restore the balance.
We can assist, we can do our part to help him seize the objective. Dalton requested that we refer veterans’ seeking redress through the CVA in respect to VAC’s systematic problems/failures or on a personal level to contact his office directly.

ComediHa! remet ses prix aux incontournables du COMEDIHA! FEST-QUÉBEC 2018!
C’est dans le cadre d’un grand rassemblement de l’industrie de l’humour que l’Agence ComediHa! a remis ses prix annuels aux artistes ou collectifs d’artistes qui ont su se démarquer durant la 19e édition du ComediHa! Fest-Québec, qui a eu lieu du 8 au 19 août derniers dans la capitale.
Prix « CHARLOT » : Numéro : Évolution de la musique au féminin
Le prix « Charlot », le coup de cœur du Festival, est décerné à un artiste ou un collectif d’artistes dont la prestation s’est nettement distinguée dans le cadre du ComediHa! Fest-Québec. Cette année, l’équipe du Festival n’a pu faire autrement que de décerner le prix « Charlot » au numéro Évolution de la musique au féminin, tiré du Gala ComediHa! animé par Véronique Cloutier et mis en scène par Jean-François Blais. Acclamée par la critique, cette soirée inoubliable a été marquée par ce numéro des plus technique et difficile à réaliser considérant ses nombreux changements de costumes dans de très courts laps de temps. Malgré les défis qui se sont présentés à elles, Charlyne Guay, la créatrice des costumes, ainsi que les artistes Mélissa Bédard, Véronique Claveau, Véronique Cloutier, Roxane Fillion, Debbie Lynch-White, Élyse Marquis et Julie Ringuette ont conquis et émerveillé le public du Palais Montcalm.
Prix « RÉVÉLATION 2018 » : Alexandre Forest
Le prix « Révélation » est décerné parmi les prestations du ComediHa! Club « Best of » qui sont jugées selon l’originalité du contenu, l’efficacité comique et la qualité générale du numéro, ainsi que le potentiel de carrière de l’artiste. Ce prestigieux prix est accompagné d’une bourse de 10 000 $ attribuable au développement d’un projet artistique, qui sera présenté en primeur au ComediHa! Fest-Québec 2019. S’ajoute également une tournée de spectacles à l’international dans les festivals partenaires du ComediHa! Fest-Québec, soit le Voo Rire de Liège, Morges-sous-Rire en Suisse et Performance d’acteur à Cannes. Le prix ComediHa! « Révélation 2018 » est remis à Alexandre Forest qui a su se démarquer par la singularité de son numéro et la réaction des plus chaleureuses que le public lui a réservée.
Prix « ANTOINE » : Véronique Cloutier et Louis Morissette
Le prix « Antoine » est décerné à un ou des artistes ou artisans du monde de l’humour pour leur implication sociale et/ou communautaire auprès d’un individu, d’un groupe d’individus ou d’un organisme caritatif. Le ComediHa! Fest-Québec remet à l’artiste ou aux artistes sélectionnés un montant de 5 000 $ qui sera versé à l’organisme ou à l’œuvre caritative de leur choix. Nous sommes fiers, par ce prix, de souligner les initiatives individuelles des artistes et artisans du monde de l’humour qui donnent au suivant. Le prix « Antoine » est décerné cette année à Véronique Cloutier et Louis Morissette de la Fondation Véro & Louis pour leur implication auprès des adultes vivant avec un trouble du spectre de l’autisme.
Prix « RECONNAISSANCE INTERNATIONALE » : Kev Adams
Le prix « Reconnaissance internationale » récompense un artiste provenant de l’extérieur du Québec s’étant distingué lors du Festival par la qualité de son contenu et par l’accueil du public. Cette année, le prix est décerné à Kev Adams pour sa prestation remarquable lors du Gala animé par Véronique Claveau et Mario Tessier, accueillie par le public du Palais Montcalm avec une ovation debout. Il s’est aussi démarqué par ses performances au ComediHa! Club « Best of » ainsi que par ses deux spectacles lors des soirées Humour du Monde, qui ont affiché plus que complet!
PRIX « RECONNAISSANCE 2018 » : Benoit Prégent
Le prix « Reconnaissance 2018 » est décerné à un artisan qui évolue dans le milieu culturel québécois et qui se démarque par son nombre d’années d’expérience, la qualité de son travail et l’appréciation de ses pairs. Benoit Prégent oeuvre pour les Galas ComediHa! depuis l’an UN. D’abord coordonnateur de production, il passe à la régie de plateau comme régisseur principal dès la 2e année du festival. Il est extrêmement apprécié de ses pairs pour plusieurs raisons, notamment pour sa rigueur, son humour et son affection pour les artistes, qui le lui rendent bien. Il a aussi enseigné à des dizaines (si ce n’est pas des centaines) de cohortes d’étudiants au BACC en télé à l’UQAM. L’année dernière, il a pris sa retraite de l’université après 30 ans de service. C’est dire le nombre de travailleurs en télé, âgés entre 25 et 50 ans, qui ont hérité des grands préceptes de Benoit Prégent.
Trippe dans ta bulle
ComediHa! a profité de cette soirée pour remettre un chèque au montant de 59 500 $ à la Fondation Véro & Louis et au Fonds philanthropique Antoine. L’agence a lancé, l’été dernier, la première collecte de fonds Trippe dans ta bulle pour laquelle différentes activités avaient été mises sur pied pendant le ComediHa! Fest-Québec. De plus, TELUS, un partenaire hors pair qui s’est impliqué dès les premiers balbutiements du projet, a versé la somme de 20 $ pour chaque mise en service ou renouvellement activé dans ses boutiques de la région de Québec sur une période de 1 mois, pour une implication totale de 30 000$. Cette initiative de TELUS a permis d’atteindre de grands résultats dès la première année de la collecte de fonds Trippe dans ta bulle.
Les sommes amassées ont été partagées entre les deux organismes : la Fondation Véro & Louis, qui s’implique auprès des adultes de 21 ans et plus vivant avec un trouble du spectre de l’autisme en construisant des maisons adaptées à leurs besoins, pour la vie, et le Fonds Antoine, qui s’implique auprès des personnes autistes, épileptiques et ayant un retard global de développement ainsi que de leur entourage. C’est donc avec fierté que Sylvain Parent-Bédard, président-fondateur de l’Agence ComediHa!, a pu remettre un magnifique chèque à Véronique Cloutier et Louis Morissette.
Rappelons que la 20e édition du ComediHa! Fest-Québec aura lieu du 7 au 18 août 2019, en plus de se déployer dans 6 régions du Québec durant les mois de juillet, août et septembre.
