Afternoon MAGAthread: YOUR WEEKLY PRESIDENTIAL RECAP!
HAPPY SCHUMER SHUTDOWN 2.0 PATRIOTS!
This is u/Ivaginaryfriend here to keep you comfort while millions of government officials literally (not literally) lose their jobs. I've got a nice recap of all things spicy and dank from the past week to keep you guys warm and comfy during these cold and troubling times so sit back and get /cozy/ 'pedes!
As always, if you happened to miss any past recaps you can check those out here!
Sunday, December 16th:
🔥🔥TRUMP TWEETS🔥🔥:
A REAL scandal is the one sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC & Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame & belittle! Collusion?
So where are all the missing Text messages between fired FBI agents Peter S and the lovely Lisa Page, his lover. Just reported that they have been erased and wiped clean. What an outrage as the totally compromised and conflicted Witch Hunt moves ever so slowly forward. Want them!
Remember, Michael Cohen only became a “Rat” after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started. They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?
At the request of many, I will be reviewing the case of a “U.S. Military hero,” Major Matt Golsteyn, who is charged with murder. He could face the death penalty from our own government after he admitted to killing a Terrorist bomb maker while overseas. @PeteHegseth @FoxNews
Judge Ken Starr, former Solicitor Generel & Independent Counsel, just stated that, after two years, “there is no evidence or proof of collusion” & further that “there is no evidence that there was a campaign financing violation involving the President.” Thank you Judge. @FoxNews
The Democrats policy of Child Seperation on the Border during the Obama Administration was far worse than the way we handle it now. Remember the 2014 picture of children in cages - the Obama years. However, if you don’t separate, FAR more people will come. Smugglers use the kids!
Required television watching is last weeks @marthamaccallum interview with the wonderful wife of Rod Blagojevich and the @trish_regan interview with a Jerome Corsi. If that doesn’t tell you something about what has been going on in our Country, nothing will. Very sad!
“It looks here as though General Flynn’s defenses are incidental to something larger which is for the prosecution to figure out if it can find a path to Donald Trump without quite knowing what that crime might be. It stops looking like prosecution and more looking like...... ... ....a persecution of the President.” Daniel Henninger, The Wall Street Journal. Thank you, people are starting to see and understand what this Witch Hunt is all about. Jeff Sessions should be ashamed of himself for allowing this total HOAX to get started in the first place! ... ....The Russian Witch Hunt Hoax, started as the “insurance policy” long before I even got elected, is very bad for our Country. They are Entrapping people for misstatements, lies or unrelated things that took place many years ago. Nothing to do with Collusion. A Democrat Scam!
SIGNIFICANT TWEETS AND NEWS:

It is incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris is burning and China way down, the Fed is even considering yet another interest rate hike. Take the Victory!
Anytime you hear a Democrat saying that you can have good Border Security without a Wall, write them off as just another politician following the party line. Time for us to save billions of dollars a year and have, at the same time, far greater safety and control!

Good luck today in court to General Michael Flynn. Will be interesting to see what he has to say, despite tremendous pressure being put on him, about Russian Collusion in our great and, obviously, highly successful political campaign. There was no Collusion!
I hope the people over at the Fed will read today’s Wall Street Journal Editorial before they make yet another mistake. Also, don’t let the market become any more illiquid than it already is. Stop with the 50 B’s. Feel the market, don’t just go by meaningless numbers. Good luck!
Facebook, Twitter and Google are so biased toward the Dems it is ridiculous! Twitter, in fact, has made it much more difficult for people to join @realDonaldTrump. They have removed many names & greatly slowed the level and speed of increase. They have acknowledged-done NOTHING!
Illegal immigration costs the United States more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. How was this allowed to happen?
Russia Dossier reporter now doubts dopey Christopher Steele’s claims! “When you get into the details of the Steele Dossier, the specific allegations, we have not seen the evidence to support them. There’s good grounds to think that some of the more sensational allegations..... ... ....WILL NEVER BE PROVEN AND ARE LIKELY FALSE.” Thank you to Michael Isikoff, Yahoo, for honesty. What this means is that the FISA WARRANTS and the whole Russian Witch Hunt is a Fraud and a Hoax which should be ended immediately. Also, it was paid for by Crooked Hillary & DNC!
Michael Isikoff was the first to report Dossier allegations and now seriously doubts the Dossier claims. The whole Russian Collusion thing was a HOAX, but who is going to restore the good name of so many people whose reputations have been destroyed?

Congratulations to @MarthaMcSally on her appointment by Governor @DougDucey as the Great new Senator from Arizona - I have no doubt she will do a fantastic job!
The Democrats, are saying loud and clear that they do not want to build a Concrete Wall - but we are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it.... ... ....It will be beautiful and, at the same time, give our Country the security that our citizens deserve. It will go up fast and save us BILLIONS of dollars a month once completed!
America is the greatest Country in the world and my job is to fight for ALL citizens, even those who have made mistakes. Congratulations to the Senate on the bi-partisan passing of a historic Criminal Justice Reform Bill.... ... ....This will keep our communities safer, and provide hope and a second chance, to those who earn it. In addition to everything else, billions of dollars will be saved. I look forward to signing this into law!

🔥🔥TRUMP TWEETS🔥🔥:
In our Country, so much money has been poured down the drain, for so many years, but when it comes to Border Security and the Military, the Democrats fight to the death. We won on the Military, which is being completely rebuilt. One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!
Mexico is paying (indirectly) for the Wall through the new USMCA, the replacement for NAFTA! Far more money coming to the U.S. Because of the tremendous dangers at the Border, including large scale criminal and drug inflow, the United States Military will build the Wall!
We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.
The Trump Foundation has done great work and given away lots of money, both mine and others, to great charities over the years - with me taking NO fees, rent, salaries etc. Now, as usual, I am getting slammed by Cuomo and the Dems in a long running civil lawsuit started by..... ... ...sleazebag AG Eric Schneiderman, who has since resigned over horrific women abuse, when I wanted to close the Foundation so as not to be in conflict with politics. Shady Eric was head of New Yorkers for Clinton, and refused to even look at the corrupt Clinton Foundation...... ... ....In any event, it goes on and on & the new AG, who is now being replaced by yet another AG (who openly campaigned on a GET TRUMP agenda), does little else but rant, rave & politic against me. Will never be treated fairly by these people - a total double standard of “justice.”
Col. Jim Carafano on @IngrahamAngle “Trump has made the Middle East a better place. When Trump came into office, ISIS was running amuck in the Middle East. Over a million refugees poured into Western Europe - none of that is happening today. That’s all due to Trump.”
“Trump gets no credit for what he’s done in the Middle East.” @IngrahamAngle So true, thank you Laura!

“I’m proud of the President today to hear that he is declaring victory in Syria.” Senator Rand Paul. “I couldn’t agree more with the presidents decision. By definition, this is the opposite of an Obama decision. Senator Mike Lee
Getting out of Syria was no surprise. I’ve been campaigning on it for years, and six months ago, when I very publicly wanted to do it, I agreed to stay longer. Russia, Iran, Syria & others are the local enemy of ISIS. We were doing there work. Time to come home & rebuild. #MAGA
Does the USA want to be the Policeman of the Middle East, getting NOTHING but spending precious lives and trillions of dollars protecting others who, in almost all cases, do not appreciate what we are doing? Do we want to be there forever? Time for others to finally fight..... ... ....Russia, Iran, Syria & many others are not happy about the U.S. leaving, despite what the Fake News says, because now they will have to fight ISIS and others, who they hate, without us. I am building by far the most powerful military in the world. ISIS hits us they are doomed!
The Democrats, who know Steel Slats (Wall) are necessary for Border Security, are putting politics over Country. What they are just beginning to realize is that I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security. U.S.A. WINS!
With so much talk about the Wall, people are losing sight of the great job being done on our Southern Border by Border Patrol, ICE and our great Military. Remember the Caravans? Well, they didn’t get through and none are forming or on their way. Border is tight. Fake News silent!
After historic victories against ISIS, it’s time to bring our great young people home!
When I begrudgingly signed the Omnibus Bill, I was promised the Wall and Border Security by leadership. Would be done by end of year (NOW). It didn’t happen! We foolishly fight for Border Security for other countries - but not for our beloved U.S.A. Not good!
Congress just passed the Criminal Justice Reform Bill known as the #FirstStepAct. Congratulations! This is a great bi-partisan achievement for everybody. When both parties work together we can keep our Country safer. A wonderful thing for the U.S.A.!!
So hard to believe that Lindsey Graham would be against saving soldier lives & billions of $$$. Why are we fighting for our enemy, Syria, by staying & killing ISIS for them, Russia, Iran & other locals? Time to focus on our Country & bring our youth back home where they belong!
Farm Bill signing in 15 minutes! #Emmys #TBT
Democrats, it is time to come together and put the SAFETY of the AMERICAN PEOPLE before POLITICS. Border security must become a #1 priority!
General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years. During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting.... ... ....equipment. General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!
Thank you to our GREAT Republican Members of Congress for your VOTE to fund Border Security and the Wall. The final numbers were 217-185 and many have said that the enthusiasm was greater than they have ever seen before. So proud of you all. Now on to the Senate!
Soon to be Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, last week live from the Oval Office, that the Republicans didn’t have the votes for Border Security. Today the House Republicans voted and won, 217-185. Nancy does not have to apologize. All I want is GREAT BORDER SECURITY!

🔥🔥TRUMP TWEETS🔥🔥:
Senator Mitch McConnell should fight for the Wall and Border Security as hard as he fought for anything. He will need Democrat votes, but as shown in the House, good things happen. If enough Dems don’t vote, it will be a Democrat Shutdown! House Republicans were great yesterday!
The Democrats are trying to belittle the concept of a Wall, calling it old fashioned. The fact is there is nothing else’s that will work, and that has been true for thousands of years. It’s like the wheel, there is nothing better. I know tech better than anyone, & technology..... ... .....on a Border is only effective in conjunction with a Wall. Properly designed and built Walls work, and the Democrats are lying when they say they don’t. In Israel the Wall is 99.9% successful. Will not be any different on our Southern Border! Hundreds of $Billions saved!
No matter what happens today in the Senate, Republican House Members should be very proud of themselves. They flew back to Washington from all parts of the World in order to vote for Border Security and the Wall. Not one Democrat voted yes, and we won big. I am very proud of you!
The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!
House Republican Vote, 217-185.
Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for Border Security!
Even President Ronald Reagan tried for 8 years to build a Border Wall, or Fence, and was unable to do so. Others also have tried. We will get it done, one way or the other!
Mitch, use the Nuclear Option and get it done! Our Country is counting on you!
Thank you @SteveDaines for being willing to go with the so-called nuclear option in order to win on DESPERATELY NEEDED Border Security! Have my total support.
There has never been a president who has been tougher (but fair) on China or Russia - Never, just look at the facts. The Fake News tries so hard to paint the opposite picture.
General Anthony Tata, author, “Dark Winter.” I think the President is making the exact right move in Syria. All the geniuses who are protesting the withdrawal of troops from Syria are the same geniuses who cooked the books on ISIS intelligence and gave rise to ISIS.”
The Democrats now own the shutdown!
I’ve done more damage to ISIS than all recent presidents....not even close!
Today, it was my great honor to sign the #FirstStepAct - a monumental bi-partisan win for the American people!
Today, it was my honor to sign into law H.R. 7213, the “Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Act of 2018.” The Act redesignates the @DHSgov Domestic Nuclear Detection Office as the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office. Read more: http://45.wh.gov/aWBqYb
A design of our Steel Slat Barrier which is totally effective while at the same time beautiful!
Some of the many Bills that I am signing in the Oval Office right now. Cancelled my trip on Air Force One to Florida while we wait to see if the Democrats will help us to protect America’s Southern Border!
Wishing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg a full and speedy recovery!
OUR GREAT COUNTRY MUST HAVE BORDER SECURITY!
SIGNIFICANT TWEETS AND NEWS:

🔥🔥TRUMP TWEETS🔥🔥:
I am in the White House, working hard. News reports concerning the Shutdown and Syria are mostly FAKE. We are negotiating with the Democrats on desperately needed Border Security (Gangs, Drugs, Human Trafficking & more) but it could be a long stay. On Syria, we were originally... .. ....going to be there for three months, and that was seven years ago - we never left. When I became President, ISIS was going wild. Now ISIS is largely defeated and other local countries, including Turkey, should be able to easily take care of whatever remains. We’re coming home!
Will be having lunch in White House residence with large group concerning Border Security.

They Blinded Me Without Science
It was another crazy week in what feels like the fifth year of the Trump administration, and I’m just trying to keep up with the insanity. You know, people told me after the election, “Look at the bright side, with Trump in the White House, the comedy will just write itself!” I wish that were the case. I’m finding out that the comedy does not just write itself. That would be really cool if it did, I could just get on stage and read from the newspaper and look like a latter day, fatter-day Mort Sahl, or I could just cut and paste from the Washington Post and send my column in, then get back to arguing with my cat. But no, I actually have to write the comedy myself.
President Donnie Darko turned the crazy up to eleven this week. This week’s politics was crazier than a shoeshine in a shitstorm. This week was crazier than a Klansman at a White Sale. This week was crazier than a Nickelback fan club.
Trump declared war on Nordstrom for dropping his daughter Ivanka’s clothing line, which caused their company stock price to rise overnight. See, people? He’s making the economy better already! Maybe if he attacks a few more American businesses, he might just make this place great again after all. And isn’t he the guy who said he was going to bring businesses back to America? So why attack companies that didn’t leave the country? Maybe he wants to chase them out first, so he can then bring them back. I have no idea. And such a shame for Ivanka, her fall ‘Back to Parochial School’ collection reflects the sense of Oscar De la Renta, and the non-sense of Betsy DeVos. And her summer swimwear ‘Beach Clothes for the Beach Closed!’ collection is made of coal and oil stain-resistant fabrics, since now the coal companies can legally pollute the rivers again and the Dakota Access Pipeline is being built. No matter what sludge you swim in, you’ll get out looking dapper. And DAPL.
Trump tweeted on Wednesday: “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!” Trump was so upset, he was barely able to get back to work and deport the mother of two American children that same day. Yep, Mr. President, it sure is unfair and terrible when a family member gets kicked out of someplace. Alas, I’m afraid we are living in a land without irony.
What else. Oh yes, Trump referred to a federal judge as a “so-called judge.” Always a good move. I know a guy who called a judge a “so-called judge” once, and I’ll see him again in 3-5 years. And that was just in traffic court. Trump was angry that the judge ruled against him over his travel ban, and his executive order will not be followed. Man, this world has changed. When I was young, the only travel ban we followed was the Grateful Dead. Preferably in a 1983 VW bus covered with bumper stickers of dancing bears and lightning-bolt skulls. Ah, youth!
So Trump appealed the ruling, and now a three-judge panel on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled unanimously against him as well. Trump accepted the ruling with all the quiet dignity of Charles Manson being denied parole. Trump tweeted: “SEE YOU IN COURT, THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!” First of all, anyone who tweets in all caps is clinically insane. We all know that. That right there should be an impeachable offence, way higher on the list than an adulterous intern blowjob. But to tell a judge “SEE YOU IN COURT”? Is that supposed to sound intimidating? That line only works on all the small-business independent contractors that he has refused to pay for their services. That doesn’t work on judges, they’re already in court. That’s their home, court, and they rule in court. Literally. That’s like trying to intimidate LeBron James by saying “SEE YOU ON THE BASKETBALL COURT!” That’s like telling a Great White Shark “SEE YOU IN THE OCEAN!” They aren’t scared, and you’re gonna need a bigger boat. His reaction reminds me of the Carl Sandburg quote, “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.” And tweet it, in all caps.
But here’s what I really want to talk about, people are beginning to push back against the Trump agenda. Maybe the Borg and the Daleks were wrong when they said “Resistance is futile!” In cities all across the country, protesters are showing up at town hall meetings, private homes of Senators, and they even blocked Betsy DeVos from entering a public school. She thought she could count on public support, but it turns out she just plain can’t count. The best argument for funding our public schools is the fact that Betsy DeVos is the result of attending private schools. Republicans were on the run, scurrying away from scheduled media events and public appearances as they found crowds of ornery woke people waiting for them. As for me, I’m trying to be woke, but I keep hitting the snooze button. I’m sure I’ll do better when we return to daylight savings time.
At a town hall meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, that hotbed of liberal activism, GOP Congressman Jason Chaffetz was booed and shouted at continuously by an audience chanting “Do you job!”, demanding he investigate national security adviser Michael Flynn or step aside. Flynn may have violated the Logan Act in his repeated contact with the Russian government. I, for one, was surprised to learn that the Logan act actually has nothing to do with adamantium claws. Hmph. Live and learn. Chaffetz may not believe in global warming, but he was feeling the heat, bigly. Chaffetz was sweating like a Nixon debating in a steamroom. Chaffetz was sweating like a German trying to tell a joke. Chaffetz was sweating like your balls in Bahrain. Chaffetz was sweating like the guy in the red shirt on the original Star Trek. He knows the minute they beam down he’ll be killed by a Horta or the Gorn. That’s why he’s there, because somebody has to die to advance the plot, and it sure as hell can’t be Shatner and Nimoy! But that doesn’t make dying on an alien planet any easier.
Things got really bad for Chaffetz when he faced tough questions from a member of the audience with superior intelligence, a 9 year old girl. She stood up and asked Chaffetz what he would do when it comes to protecting the environment. When he started stammering a non-answer, the girl hit him with a follow up question that left Chaffetz looking for a fire alarm to pull. “Do you believe in science?” she asked. “Because I do!” Boom. Crowd roars. Mic drop. One and done, son. It must be embarrassing to be schooled by someone actually in grade-school.
He couldn’t give a straight answer. All she asked him was if he believed in science. Yet a Congressman in the 21st Century couldn’t answer “Yes.” WTF? I haven’t seen anything this pathetic since a drunk David Hasselhoff ate a cheeseburger off a bathroom floor. Who the hell won’t say they believe in science? The Mujahideen? Snake-Handling Pentecostal Pastors who speak in tongues? The Pope who locked up Galileo? I grew up in an era when people knew knowledge is power, and every single member of Congress would have answered yes to that question in a heartbeat. You would have to go all the way back to 1925 to the Scopes Monkey Trial to find a public official actively and openly dodging science. Sadly, people are so uninformed today they think the Scopes Monkey Trial involved Dr. Zaius and Harambe. Hey, you know what the difference is between Dr. Zaius and Donald Trump? One is a hateful, orange, science-denying orangutan, and the other one has a medical degree.
Every Congressman since before my grandfather was born has believed in science. Especially since science gave us the atom bombs we dropped on Imperial Japan and won the damn war in three days. Ask the Japanese if they believe in science. They know that our atomic detonations awakened Godzilla from his frozen slumber, and Tokyo paid the price for a dozen movies or more.  “History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men. Go go Godzilla.” Then Godzilla went back to sleep for a couple of decades when he stopped selling tickets. Hmm, I wonder if it was radiation from the Fukushima reactor core meltdown that brought Godzilla back to life for the 2015 reboot? Although the movie may have been a bigger disaster than Fukushima. I mean, they had a red-hot Brian Cranston in his first movie since winning three best actor Emmys for the greatest television show ever, ‘Breaking Bad’, and what do they do? They kill him in the first ten minutes of the movie. He went from ‘Breaking Bad’ on television to ‘Making Bad’ movies.
Anyway, after entering the Atomic Age, all our politicians believed in science, because it put us at the top of the food chain. We were running this world for decades after the war, and we blinded them with science. And because our politicians believed in science, they put a lot of funding into science, investing in the space program, bringing in the Space Age, and putting America on the Moon. The only men ever on the Moon. Just us, and science. But now the Republican right has decided to reject facts, and reject science.
You know who does believe in science? Iran. They launched a missile test just two weeks ago, which US officials sharply condemned as "provocative" and "irresponsible." Call it what it is, man, “science.” Not believing in science doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, it won’t go away if you ignore it. Unlike your ex. You can say you don’t believe in trains, but I wouldn’t recommend laying on railroad tracks to test your theory. You know who else believes in science? North Korea. They just fired a ballistic missile over 300 miles into the sea of Japan, while in this country Donald Trump just goes ballistic on Twitter. Do we really live in a world where Kim Jong-un, a wobbling weebil of a dictator with a haircut that looks like a matador’s hat,  is more scientific than U.S. Congressmen? Where’s Seth Rogen and James Franco when you need them.
But we know why Jason Chaffetz is running away from science. Because his corporate owners are Climate Change deniers, so he is too, if he wants to get re-elected. In fact, in answer to the girl’s question, he started talking about burning more coal. Clean coal. Clean coal? That’s like saying Clean Aids. That’s like saying Clean Shit. “Nah, I didn’t need to wash my hands, it was Clean Shit. Now let me get start making your dinner.” Then you’ll have Clean Dysentery.
I have the TV on as I write this column, I left it on TMC, half-watching a Fellini movie I didn’t understand a word of, but I like listening to people speak Italian. It makes me feel cultured for some reason. But as I mentioned climate change, I looked up and noticed that the movie had ended and a new movie started. Ice Station Zebra is on right now, where Rock “I swear I’m straight” Hudson races the Russians to a north pole weather station to recover a Soviet spy satellite, with the help of affable idiot Ernest Borgnine, and running back Jim Brown. This was 1968, and they’re walking on foot to the North Pole base, with gunfights, fistfights, and a whole lot of solid ice. That was 1968. Today, they’d be swimming to the North Pole. The only standing they’d be doing at the North Pole now would be on the floating bodies of drowned polar bears. That’s how real climate change is, and the science behind it. But not to Jason Chaffetz. Half his base are greedy corporate bastards who don’t want to stop polluting and risk cutting into their obscene profits, and the other half his base want the world to end so Jesus can come take them all to heaven. Not a lot of incentive for him to embrace reality.
When the crowd chanted at Chaffetz, “Do your job!”, what they don’t realize is he is doing his job, for his real bosses, not for us. He is removing protections for the environment, for workers, for labor unions, basically dismantling society until Americans live a type of unhealthy, impoverished, uninsured existence we haven’t seen since Bob Cratchit’s evil boss had a Christmas nightmare. And you know the ending to a Christmas Carol is bullshit, right? You know that new-found benevolence Scrooge acquired from his visions or visitations or whatever they were wore off pretty quickly in the cold light of day. I bet a week after Christmas, Scrooge was back to his old greedy self, and sent the Cratchits a bill for the turkey he brought them. And he probably sold Tiny Tim to a coal mine, he’s small, and in those tunnels his bad leg doesn’t matter, there’s no room for him to stand up anyway. He probably eliminated Cratchit's job altogether, through downsizing or outsourcing, leaving them destitute. Mrs. Cratchit was probably left with no choice but to walk the cobblestone streets of London as a Victorian prostitute, until she is killed by Jack the Ripper in a gaslit alley.
Hey, speaking of gaslight, anybody remember Gaslight Village? It was a theme park in Lake George village, owned by the same guy who created Frontier Town and Storytown, which is now the Great Escape. Gaslight Village was by far the lamest of the three amusement parks. It was mainly aimed at older adults, who only went because they sold beer and liquor all over the park, so they could put their obnoxious kids on a slow-moving merry go round and toss back a row of boiler makers and maybe this goddamn vacation won’t be a complete waste of time after all. I basically just remember the ads for Gaslight Village, and that barbershop quartet-style jingle. “Gaslight Village, yesterday’s fun today, bo de-oh doe, bo de-oh doe doe doe.”
I went there as a very young kid, it was a 1920’s themed park, so I can’t imagine what ‘yesterday’s fun’ would have been. Not catching tuberculosis? Living through trench warfare on the western front in World War I? That is, if you call surviving trench foot, shell-shock, and mustard gas attacks “living.” You know, I always thought mustard gas sounded delicious. In retrospect, it’s probably a bad idea to name horrible, fatal, chemical nerve-agents after tasty condiments. Thankfully it stopped right there with mustard gas, to my knowledge. I don’t think they ever developed a ketchup virus, or an ebola mayonnaise, or any other killer condiment. Although more than a few people who had the salsa at Chipotle might disagree with me, if they still could. Mustard gas was used on millions of men throughout Germany and France. I wonder, when they fought at Dijon, do you think the mustard gas they used was of a higher quality? Or was it just more expensive? I picture two tanks stopped alongside each other, a man inside one tank asks the other tank, “Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon mustard gas?” But the other tank was German, so they shot him in the face with a Howitzer. Or in Germany, at the battle of Frankfurt, mustard gas sounds like it would be an excellent choice, after all, who doesn't like a frankfurter with mustard? In fact, Italy wanted to get in on the war just so they could get some mustard on Bologna, but the fighting was too far away, so they just went to the store instead.
“It's poetry in motion
And when she turned her eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
Mm, but she blinded me with science
And failed me in geometry
When she's dancing next to me
"Blinding me with science, science!"
"Science!"
I can hear machinery.”

Zadie Smith: dance assignments for columnists
From Fred Astaires elegance to Beyoncs power, Zadie Smith is inspired by dancers as much she is by other writers
The connection between writing and dancing has been often on my brain recently: its a path I want to keep open. It feels a little ignored to report to, say, the relationship between music and prose maybe because there is something counter-intuitive about it. But for me the two forms are close to each other: I feel dance has something to tell me about what I do.
One of “the worlds largest” solid patches of writing advice I know is in fact intended for dancers you can find it in the choreographer Martha Grahams biography. But it loosens me in front of my laptop the same room I reckon it might induce a young dancer to breathe deeply and wiggle their paws and toes. Graham writes: There is a vitality, a life force, an intensity, a quicken that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of day, this show is unique. And if you impede it, it will never subsist through any other medium and it will be lost. The nature will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how precious nor how it compares with other formulations. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the canal open.
What can an prowes of words take from the artwork that needs none? Yet I often contemplate Ive learned just as much from watching dancers as I have from reading. Dance readings for writers: lessons of orientation, outlook, lilt and form, some of them obvious, some indirect. What follows got a few memoranda towards that idea.
Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly
Fred Astaire represent the gentry when he dances, claimed Gene Kelly, in old age, and I represent the proletariat. The separation is immediately satisfying, although it was a little harder to say why. Towering, thin and elegant, versus muscular and sporting is the fact that it? Theres the obvious stuff of silk hat and tails versus T-shirt and slacks. But Fred sometimes wore T-shirts and slacks, and was not actually that towering, this is the only way held as if “hes been”, and when moving always appeared heightened, to be gliding across whichever skin-deep: the storey, the ceiling, an ice rink, a bandstand. Genes centre of gravity was far lower: he stoops his knees, he hunkers down. Kelly is floored, securely planted, where Astaire is untethered, free-floating.
Likewise, the aristocrat and the proletariat have different relations to the field beneath their feet, the first moving fluidly across the surface of the world, the second specifically tethered to a certain smudge: a city block, a village, a factory, a stretching of plains. Cyd Charisse claimed her husband always knew which of these dancers shed been working with by looking at their own bodies at the end of the day: bruised everywhere if it was Kelly , not a blemish if it was Astaire. Not only aloof when it came to the field, Astaire was aloof around other publics figures. Through 15 times and 10 movies, its difficult to detect a few moments of real sex strain between Fred and his Ginger. They have enormous unison but little hot. Now think of Kelly with Cyd Charisse in the fantasy sequence of Singin in the Rain! And maybe this is one of the advantages of earthiness: sex.
When I write I find theres generally a choice to be made between the grounded and the float. The ground I am thinking of in this case is communication as we meet it in its commonsense mode. The communication of the television, of the supermarket, of the advert, the newspaper, the governmental forces, the daily public discussion. Some columnists like to walk this sand, recreate it, violate fragments of it off and use it to their advantage, where others scarcely recognise its existence. Nabokov a literal aristocrat as well as an aesthetic one barely ever applied a toe upon it. His language is literary, far from what we think up as our shared linguistic home.
One argument in defence of such literary speech might be the style it acknowledges its own artificiality. Commonsense language meanwhile claims to be plain and natural, conversational, but is often as erected as asphalt, dreamed up in ad business or in the heart of government sometimes both at the same epoch. Simultaneously nostalgic and coercive.( The Peoples Princess. The Big Society. Make America Great Again .) Commonsense language claims to take its result from the behavior people naturally express, but any columnist who truly attends to the practice parties address will shortly find himself categorised as a distinctive stylist or satirist or experimentalist. Beckett was like this, and the American columnist George Saunders is a good contemporary sample.( In dance, the illustration that comes to my attention is Bill Bojangles Robinson, whose occasion was tapping up and down the stairs. What could be more normal, more folksy, more grounded and everyday than tapping up and down some stairs? But his signature stagecoach procedure concerned a staircase pressed right up against another staircase a stairway to itself and so up and down he would tap, up and down, down and up, entirely surreal, like an Escher magazine come to life .)
Astaire is clearly not an experimental dancer like Twyla Tharp or Pina Bausch, but “he il be” surreal within the meaning of surpassing the real. He is transcendent. When he dances a few questions proposes itself: what if a organization moved like this through the world? But it is only a rhetorical, fantastical query, for no figures move like Astaire , no, we only move like him in our dreams.
By contrast, I have appreciated French boys run up the steps of the High-pitched Line in New York to take a photo of the opinion, their backsides working just like Gene Kellys in On The Town, and I have accompanied black girls on the A train swing round the pole on their way out of the slither openings Kelly again, hanging from that eternal lamppost. Kelly paraphrased the cliche where reference is danced, and he reminds us in turn of the goodnes we do sometimes possess ourselves. He is the incarnation of our mass in their youth, at their most liquor and potent, or whenever our natural aptitudes compound ideally with our hard-earned skills. He is a demonstration of how the prosaic can become poetic, if we work hard enough. But Astaire, where reference is dances, has nothing to do with hard work( although we know, from profiles, that he worked very hard, behind the scenes ). He is poetry in motion. His crusades are so collected from ours that he adjusts a limit on our own aspirations. Nothing hopes or expects to dance like Astaire, just as nobody really expects to write like Nabokov.

Writing, like dancing, is only one of the arts available to people who have nothing. For 10 and sixpence, advises Virginia Woolf, one can buy article enough to write all the plays of Shakespeare. The only absolutely necessary paraphernalium in dance is your own form. Some of the greatest dancers have come from the lowliest backgrounds. With numerous black dancers this has come with the complication of representing your hasten. You are on a stage, in front of your people and other parties. What look will you show them? Will you be your soul? The very best soul? A representation? A typify?
The Nicholas brothers were not street teenagers the latter are the family of college-educated musicians but they were never formally trained in dance. They learned watching their parents and their parents peers performing on the chitlin route, as pitch-black vaudeville was then announced. Later, when they entered the movies, their executions were generally filmed in this way as to be non-essential to the storey, so that when these films played in the south their dazzling strings “couldve been” snipped out without doing any harm to the soundnes of the plan. Genius contained, genius ring-fenced. But also genius undeniable.
My talent was the weapon, bickered Sammy Davis Jr, the supremacy, the way for me to fight. It was the one method I might hope to affect a mans supposing. Davis was another chitlin hoofer, initially, and from straitened situations. His logic here is very familiar: it is something of an article of faith within the kinds of houses who have few other resources. A mother tells their own children to be twice as good, she tells them to be irrefutable. My baby used to say something like it to me. And when I watch the Nicholas brethren I think of that stressful rule: be twice as good.
The Nicholas brethren were numerous, many importances better than anybody else. They were better than anyone has a right or need to be. Fred Astaire called their routine in Stormy Weather the greatest sample of cinematic dance he ever sight. They are progressing down a monstrous staircase doing the splits as if the divides is the commonsense mode to get somewhere. They are impeccably garmented. They are more than representing they are excelling.
But I always thoughts I recognize a little difference between Harold and Fayard, and it interests me; I take it as a kind of exercise. Fayard seems to me more concerned with this responsibility of representation when he dances: he looks the fraction, he is the part, his propriety unassailable. He is formal, contained, technically indisputable: a recognition to the race. But Harold sacrifices himself over to rejoice. His hair is his tell: as he dances it slackens itself from the slather of Brylcreem he always put on it, the ebullient afro scroll springs out, he doesnt even try to clean it back. Between propriety and rejoice, choose joy.
Prince& Micheal Jackson

Michael Jackson and Prince
On YouTube you will find them, locked in numerous dance-offs, and so you are presented with a striking choice. But its not a question of grades of ability, of “whos” the greater dancer. The choice is between two entirely opposite evaluates: legibility on the one handwriting, temporality on the other. Between a tombstone( Jackson) and a kind of mirage( Prince ).
But both men were good dancers. Putting aside the difference in meridian, physically they had many similarities. Atrociously slight, long necked, thin-legged, powered from the torso rather than the backside, which in both cases was improbably small-time. And to its implementation of influence they were of course evenly indebted to James Brown. The divides, the increases from the divides, the gyration, the glide, the knee bend, the jerk of the thought all stolen from the same source.
Yet Prince and Jackson are nothing alike when they dance, and its very hard to bring to psyche Prince dancing, whereas it is practically impossible to forget Jackson. It chimes absurd, but try it for yourself. Sovereign moves , no matter how many times you may have mentioned them, had not yet been house inscription in recall; they never seem quite secured or saved. If person asks you to dance like Prince, what will you do? Spin, possibly, and do the splits, if youre capable. But there wont appear to be anything specially Prince-like about that. Its strange. How are you able dance and dance, in front of millions of people, for years, and still seem like trade secrets merely I know?( And isnt it the occasion that to be a Prince fan is to feel that Prince was your secret alone ?)
I never went to see Michael Jackson, but I received Prince half a dozen occasions. I pictured him in stadiums with thousands of people, so have a rational recognizing also that he was in no sense my secret, that he was in fact a celebrity. But I still say his proves were illegible, private, like the performance of a soul in the middle of a area at a house party. It was the greatest happen “youve been” imagine and hitherto its greatness was confined to the moment in which it was happening.
Jackson was precisely the opposite. Every move he made was perfectly legible, public, endlessly reproduced and copyable, like a meme before the word dwelt. He made in likeness, and across age. He deliberately sketched and then observed once more the edges around each move, like a policeman drawing a chalk front round a organization. Deposit his neck forward if he was moving backwards. Cut his trousers short so you could read his ankles. Grabbed his groin so you could better understand its gyrations. Gloved one hand so you might attend to its rhythmic genius, the road it interrupted everything, like an utterance mark.
Towards the end, his strange stagewear is more and more tasked with this job of sketch and mark. It looked like a formation of armor, the aim of which was to define each element of his person so no crusade of it would legislate unnoted. His arms and legs multiply buckled a literal visualisation of his flexible joints and a metal waistband passing turn left in communities across his breastplate, accenting the transformation of his shoulders along this diagonal. A heavyweights region accentuated slender hips and partitioned the torso from the legs, so you observed when the top and foot half of their own bodies gathered in opposite directions. Finally a silver thong, rendering his eloquent groin as clear as if it were in ALL CAPS. It wasnt subtle, there was no subtext, but it was clearly legible. Beings will be dancing like Michael Jackson until the end of time.
But Prince, treasured, elusive Monarch, well, there lays one whose epithet was writ in liquid. And from Prince a writer might take the lesson that elusiveness can own a deeper glamour than the legible. In “the worlds” of words, we have Keats to remind us of this, and to express what a long afterlife an elusive master can have, even when targeted beside as clearly depicted a illustration as Lord Byron. Prince represent the inspiration of the moment, like an ode composed to captivate a happen agitation. And when the mood changes, he changes with it: another good lesson.
Theres no impunity in being a gravestone. Better to be the person still jamming in the wee hours of the house party, and though everybody films it on their telephones no one proves quite able to captivate the essence of it. And now hes disappeared, having escaped us one more time. I dont claim Princes epitome wont last-place as long as Jacksons. I exclusively say that in our brains it will never be as distinct.

These three dont only invite emulates they challenge them. They go further than legibility into proscription. They conduct infantries, and we join them. We are like those uniformed dancers moving in military constitution behind them, an anonymous force whose responsibility it is to mimic precise the gesticulates of their general.
This was realise literal on Beyoncs Formation tour lately, when the general heightened her fucking arm like a shotgun, drew the provoke with her left and the racket of gunshot resound out. There is nothing insinuate about these sorts of dancing: like the military forces, it operates as a anatomy of franchise, whereby a decree opinion America, Beyonc is presided over by many cells that span “the worlds”. Maybe it is for this reason that much of the crowd I ascertained at Wembley could be found, for long periods , not facing in the direction of the stage at all, instead turning to their friends and collaborators. They didnt need to watch Beyonc any more than soldiers need to look fixedly at the flag to perform their duties. Our ruler was up there somewhere dancing but the idea of her had already been internalised. Pals from the gym sat in curves and spouted their fists, girlfriends from hen nights made inwards and did Beyonc to each other, and boys from the Beyhive hollered every word into each others faces. They could have done the same at home, but this was a public display of allegiance.
Janet Jackson knocked off this curious phenomenon, Madonna persisted it, Beyonc is its apex. Here dancing is intended as a demonstration of the girl will, a concrete articulation of its reach and possibilities. The exercise is quite evident. My body obeys me. My dancers obey me. Now you will obey me. And then everybody in the crowd thoughts being obeyed like Bey a delightful imagining.
Lady scribes who induce similar passion( in far smaller gatherings ): Muriel Spark, Joan Didion, Jane Austen. Such writers offer the same essential qualities( or apparitions ): total controller( over their structure) and no democracy( for the reader ). Compare and contrast, say, Jean Rhys or Octavia Butler, dame novelists often adored but rarely replica. Theres too much freedom in their own homes. Meanwhile every convict of Didions says: obey me! Who moves the world? Girls!
David Byrne

David Byrne and David Bowie
The art of not dancing a vital exercise. Sometimes it is essential to be awkward, uncouth, jerking, to be neither lyrical nor banal, to be positively bad. To carry other the chances of mass, alternative appreciates, to stop making sense. Its interested in me that both sets of creators did their worst dancing to their blackest sections. Take me to the river, sings Byrne, in square trousers 20 epoches too large, looking down at his yanking hips as if they belong to someone else. This music is not excavation, his trousers say, and his motions going any further: maybe this mas isnt mine, either. At the end of this stratum of logic lies a liberating contemplate: perhaps none genuinely owns anything.
People can be too precious about their patrimony, about their tradition columnists especially. Preservation and protection have their place but they shouldnt stymie either liberty or fraud. All possible aesthetic expressions are available to all peoples under the clue of adoration. Bowie and Byrnes obvious love for what was not theirs brings out new slants in familiar seems. It hadnt occurred to me before realizing these men dance that all individuals might choose, for example, to match the arc of a drum drum with anything but the matching curving shift of their own bodies, that is, with harmony and hot. But it is about to change you are eligible to balk: throw up a strange slant and unexpectedly spasm, like Bowie, or wonder if thats truly your own forearm, like Byrne.
I think of young Luther Vandross, singing backup a few feet behind Bowie, during Young Americans, watching Bowie flail and beat. I wonder what his take over all that was. Did he ever suppose: Now, what in the world is he doing? But a few conducts in, it was clear to everybody. Here was something different. Something old-fashioned, and yet new.
Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov

Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov
When you face an audience, which direction will you turn? Inwards or outwards? Or some compounding of the two? Nureyev, so fierce and neurotic, so vulnerable, so beautiful like a deer unexpectedly caught in our headlamps is faced resolutely inwards. You cant take your eyes off him, as people like to say, but at the same meter he is almost excruciating to watch. We detect we might smash him, that he might crumble or explosion. He never does, but still, whenever he leaps you feel the possibility of setting up total disaster, as you do with certain high-strung athletes no matter how many times they range or leap or dive. With Nureyev you are an onlooker, you are a person who has been granted the largest honour of being present while Nureyev dances. I dont make this sarcastically: it is an honour to watch Nureyev, even in these grainy old-time videos on YouTube. Hes a kind of miracle, and is fully cognisant of this when he dances, and what did you do today to authorize an gathering with a miracle?( See likewise: Dostoevsky .)
With Baryshnikov, I have no anxieties of natural disasters. He is an outward-facing creator, he seeks to please me and he supersedes altogether. His look dances as much as his arms and legs.( Nureyevs face, meanwhile, is permanently lost in transcendent find .) Sometimes Baryshnikov wants to delight me so much better blaze even try tap dancing with Liza Minnelli, risking the sneer of the purists.( I am not a purist. I am delighted !) He is a charmer, an entertainer, he is comic, stunning, cerebral, a clown whatever you need him to be. Baryshnikov is both adoring and affection. He has high and low modes, tough and soft constitutes, but hes ever facing outwards, to us, his audience.( See also: Tolstoy .)
Once I filled Baryshnikov over a New York dinner table: I was so star-struck I could hardly pronounce. Lastly I asked him: Did you ever gratify Fred Astaire? He smiled. He said: Yes, once, at a dinner. I was very star-struck, I hardly addrest. But I watched his hands all the time, they were like a lesson in themselves so elegant!

Head-coverings - Again....
I will promise my readers that this is the last article I will ever write on head-coverings.  The thought of writing more, makes me want to cover my head with a large stainless steel pot – you know, one of the big ones you boil lobsters in? – and have someone beat the top of it repeatedly with a wooden spoon.  However, I did promise to respond to Joe’s comments, and I will one last time.  (Joe - please no rebuttal...I struggle to step away from a good argument, and I don’t want to be tempted to break my promise above.)  Once this topic is complete, I will then turn my attention to President Trump, immigration policies, and the inability of the liberal left to be consistent within their own worldview.
I would also like to take this opportunity to point something out in regard to my last article.  You may have read it and thought “wow, Salt&Light is being a big meanie, accusing Joe of a strawman argument and really slamming his conclusion”.  However, you may have missed the irony that I, myself, used a strawman argument to accuse Joe of using a strawman argument. Clever, huh?  Well, perhaps not if you missed it.  Joe, however, did not miss that irony and noted it in his comments back to me.  I still hold to the conclusion I reached, that with God and the angels being intended audience, we cannot conclude that the symbol loses its power and significance in their eyes.
By the way, Joe may not have considered this, but my blogs comments section, has ultimately become his own blog.  His responses are far better than the drivel I write.  You need to check them out.
Ok onto the task...can’t wait to conclude... Actually, in all seriousness I’m happy that I covered this topic.  Many of us have simply grown up with the tradition of head-coverings and never stopped to really understand why.  I’ve answered that question, at the very least, for myself.  If anyone else was helped by this, I thank the Lord for providing me the opportunity to deliver the message - and I pray that I did it faithfully and consistent with His Word.
Reader’s Comment: “I believe that the wearing of head coverings applies primarily to public and audible prayer (and prophesying too but this by definition is public/audible)….First, head coverings are an external and obvious symbol and therefore make most sense when matched to a context where the associated action is also visible. Second, the (hopefully) ubiquitous nature of private prayer as recommended by 1 Thess 5:16 makes actually following this principle difficult. For example, if I want to pray on my walk to work, every day during the winter months I either have to violate this principle or risk frozen ear lobes. On the flip side, a woman should essentially have her head covered from morning to night given the constant prayers that are issued throughout the day. Because the passage does not explicitly distinguish the praying context I would not be dogmatic on this, but I think the evidence points in that direction.”
Response: Although, head-coverings are external and obvious to the human eye, it is not the human eye for which the head-covering is to be worn.  Given that God hears and answers both audible and inaudible prayers, I’m not convinced that He would see any difference between one and the other.  A human audience would see a difference, but again they are not the intended audience for the head-covering.
The suggestion that this passage refers only to audible prayer is an assumption brought into the text.  It is not derived from the text itself.  The text simply reads that when praying a woman is to be covered and man uncovered.  The argument appears to make the application live or die on a technically; in this case audibility. I think of Hannah’s inaudible prayer in 1 Samuel 1; it was heard by God and witnessed by Eli the priest, because her lips moved.  How would one apply the audible vs. inaudible rule in a case like this?  If a prayer is inaudible and unnoticed by another human being then is no head covering necessary?  If a prayer is inaudible but is recognized as prayer by an observing human, then a head covering is necessary?  Again, I stress the point that the head covering symbol is for God and the witnessing angels.  Public and audible or private and inaudible have no bearing on the validity or power of a prayer being offered.
In one of my articles on head-coverings I referred to skiing out of control and calling out in prayer for help (with a helmet covering my head).  Joe uses a similar analogy, referencing frozen earlobes.  You could also use the analogy of a sister that has hit a patch of black ice and is headed for the ditch – must she fumble around in the glovebox for a mantilla in order to call out in prayer?  Of course not.  Perhaps I’ve been feeling philosophical lately but this particular form of argumentation is called ‘reductio ad absurdum’ (reduction to absurdity).  Essentially this form of argumentation tries to prove or disprove a point by showing that it ultimately leads to a ridiculous, absurd, or impractical conclusion.  It can be a perfectly legitimate form of argumentation.  However, it can often be used fallaciously.  Using the examples of an out-of-control skier, a woman headed for the ditch, and frozen ear-lobes, are by definition, a reduction to absurdity.  Is that type of argumentation valid in this instance?  If we rely on these examples to conclude that 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 cannot be referring to silent prayer, then I would suggest they are being used fallaciously.  For two reasons: 1) neither the chapter itself, nor any other passage in the bible suggests that there is a difference between audible and inaudible prayer (in the eyes of God or the witnessing angels).  Given that we have no evidence at all to support that conclusion, I think the usage of reductio ad absurdum, is fallacious in this instance; and 2)   exceptions to a rule do not negate nor define the rule.  The Lord God knows the intent of the heart, and if covering or uncovering the head when praying is not possible in a particular situation, I would suggest you can pray with a clear conscience.  I will add that if it was a warm summer day and I was walking down the street and wanted to pray (silently), I would feel obligated to remove my hat on the basis of this scripture.  Again, God and the angels are the witnesses, not other men and women.
Reader’s Comment:  “I do not believe prayer should be seen as synonymous with singing (and other aspects of worship). Clearly on a broad level they do involve communication between people and God, and do have similarities in their execution and purpose…scripture clearly distinguishes between them and treats them as separate actions (I Cor 14:14 as one example).
Response:  In response to this, I would simply present as evidence the hymns we sing during the remembrance of the Lord, and the praise and worship hymns sung during other occasions.
“Father, we, Thy children, bless Thee” (#9 Little Flock)
“Lord Jesus! We worship and bow at Thy feet” (#20 Little Flock)
“How great Thou art” (Elvis, Carrie Underwood, etc.)
Those sound a lot like prayers, albeit put to melody.
I would also point to the Psalms.  There are many which are clearly meant to be put to music and sung, and are defined within the Psalm itself as being a prayer.
Psalm 4:1: For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A psalm of David.  “Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer (NASB)”
Psalm 55:1: For the choir director, on stringed instruments.  A Maskil of David.  “Give ear to my prayer, O God…(NASB).”
Etc, etc, etc
[It is not believed that the instructions to the choir directors are part of the inspired scripture, but they do date back to the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures that existed at the time of the apostles) and ancient Hebrew manuscripts.  The musical nature of the Psalms were carried along through history and maintained by Jewish tradition.]
In Acts 16 when Paul and Silas are in prison and it speaks of them praying and singing, a literal rendering of the original Greek could be translated as “they hymned prayers”.  Young’s Literal Translation renders it this way: “ V25 And at midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were hearing them”.
Reader’s Comment:   …if they are seen as the same [praying and singing], then singing (and all similar forms of public worship) would not be something women should engage in in the assembly setting (based on the verses/arguments you outline about gender roles). So to be logically consistent you would have to argue that either (a) women are allowed to pray in assembly meetings as a form of worship (and therefore doesn’t violate the principle to not usurp authority over the man) or (b) they should stay completely silent at all times.”
Response:  There is a well-known rule in the application of biblical hermeneutics, that scripture is always the best interpreter of scripture.  In the case of head-coverings we only have the one passage in 1 Corinthians 11 to rely on, and it is a very clear and didactic in its reading.  There is no other cross references within scripture to help us interpret it further.  Although we may disagree on the contexts and circumstances that necessitate the application of the teaching, we do agree that the text very clearly teaches that heads are to be covered when praying or prophesying.
In terms of women being silent in the assembly as instructed in 1 Corinthians 14:34 “The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak (NASB)”.  If this is all we had in regard to this instruction, then I would have to agree with Joe’s conclusion on what it would require to remain logically consistent.  However, we have further instruction in 1 Timothy 2:11-14 that provides us the ability to further interpret and better understand the commandment for women to be silent in the assembly/church.
1 Timothy 2:11-14: “A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression (NASB).”
1 Timothy 2:11-14, helps us understand that it is a matter of man’s authority that a woman is to be in silence. And as with the instructions on head-coverings, the Apostle Paul grounds the principle in the created order. Singing collectively in worship (or in prayer) does not break the authority principle.  Therefore, I can still hold to my belief that hymn singing is a form of prayer, and still be consistent and in accord with scriptural teaching.
Reader’s Comment:  “I believe the breaking of the act of praying into two categories (i.e., individual vs. collective) is not a valid one. Clearly prayer can happen in a collective setting – that is, a group of people coming together with the goal of engaging in prayer. However, the act of praying itself is, both biblically and logically, something that can only be done individually.”
Response:  The placement of prayer into the categories of individual vs. collective is not based upon my own thoughts or opinion; scripture itself shows both categories.
Matthew 18:19-20:  “19 Again I say to you, that if two of you shall agree on the earth concerning any matter, whatsoever it may be that they shall ask, it shall come to them from my Father who is in [the] heavens.  20 For where two or three are gathered together unto my name, there am I in the midst of them (DBY).”
Matthew 18:19 speaks to the power of collective prayer.  Why is collective prayer so powerful? Verse 20 provides that answer:  the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself is in the midst when two or three are gathered together to His name.  Verse 19 is the assembly prayer meeting.  Saints gathered around the Lord Jesus Christ, united by the Holy Spirit so that ‘it may be that they shall ask, it shall come to them…”.  I would, therefore conclude that a sister attending a prayer meeting is part of the ‘they’ in verse 19 and therefore should have a covered head.
We also read of collective prayer in Acts 1:14 “These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers (NASB).”
And one further point; Jesus taught His disciples to pray collectively.  Turn to Matthew 6, read the Lord’s Prayer and note the plural pronouns. (You also see this type of prayer used in the assembly prayer meeting: e.g. Our God and Father…we come before you….we thank you…we ask for healing...etc.  The reason for this use of plural pronouns takes us back to Matthew 18:19, and collective assembly prayer.)
Matthew 6:9-13 “9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]”
OK...I’m done.  Joe, I plead with you...no rebuttals.  Let’s end this with an agreement to disagree on application.  Protect your earlobes, and consider me in your sub-zero outdoor praying.  I can use the help.
