Thoughts on season 4 of Dragon Prince? I, like half of the fandom, found it underwhelming/disappointing 😅
Ha ha it didn’t escape my notice that s4 seems to have this fandom more divided compared to the three previous seasons I’m sorry to hear it left you feeling discontented.
Personally I did enjoy it though I wouldn’t say it would make it in my personal top 3 😋 I think my reaction overall can be summed up like this:
Historically I don’t enjoy time skips and I find them a bit jarring. They make me feel like I am missing out on a lot of gradual development on certain things but this might be a matter of preference as some people like filling in the blanks and some like it less 😅 I prefer to have things more spelled out personally.
I liked the expansion of the sunfire elves’ lore and the conflict between Janai and Karim but I felt like it kind of fizzled out in the end. But perhaps this was a deliberate set up by the writers to make Karim more susceptible to Aaravos’ potential future manipulations. He, like Callum, is a mage after all. Kind of like a callback to Kasef unknowingly helping out the man who is responsible for his father’s state as Karim’s eldest sister was killed by Aaravos.
The Rayllum reunion I have no notes about 🥹🤌 that to me was done perfectly. Also really liked Terry! Didn’t expect him to kill Ibis so early in this season. As for his coming out scene I feel I have no place to critique as I myself am cis but it did surprise me because I thought I read somewhere that in the world of tdp there was no such thing as homo- and transphobia? Not sure where I read that. Not complaining about it jsyk. It just surprised me a bit and makes me feel bad for Terry.
The fart jokes are kind of…meh. I don’t mind them generally but the amount did feel a bit excessive. Like I understand this is still a kid’s show at it’s core but it did feel like it regressed a bit in age and I think the fart jokes are the biggest culprit here. From what I gathered on one of the writers twitter account is that most of the writers are dads with quite young children so that offers an explanation on that. I think the fandom’s negative response to them will convince them to tone it down a bit in future seasons.
One thing I really feel though a lack of female friendships. The Jamaya ship is exquisite and the Rayla/Claudia relationship is wonderfully complex but understandably antagonistic. I am hoping that Rayla at least gets to have a female friendship because I am personally a sucker for those and I feel the clear absence of it in this show currently as there is comradely among the boys.
