Something Wild Calls || Ariana & Layla
Ariana finds a skittish Layla dumpster diving for food and makes it her mission to help.
On this particular day, Ariana found herself walking to the library after school to join in on a group study session for her Earth Science class. She was off from Trusty Wood today and could use the extra help in getting her grade up in that class. She’d been walking down the street when a familiar yet new scent hit her nose. Another wolf, it had to be. She’d know that smell anywhere. If she’d been in wolf form, her ears would be perked all the way up right now. Instead, she had a mischievous grin on her face as she followed her nose. Why her nose was leading her into a back alley way behind a row of quick service restaurants was beyond her. Maybe this wolf worked at one of these establishments? It mattered little, all she knew was she had to find them. Wolves were meant to stick together. However, what she found was far from what she expected. The a girl who looked to be about her age poking through a dumpster. For one, she seemed way to pretty to be dumpster diving of all things, but there was something kind of sad to her. “Hey,” she called out softly, “Don’t wanna startle you or anything, but uh, what are you doing?”
Layla had spent the last of her money back in another state weeks before arriving to White Crest. Now, all she had left were a few coins; a picture of her girlfriend; and the clothes on her back, which were already getting pretty nasty. All the sink and creek washings in the world couldn’t remove the stains and underlying stench that was starting to build. From one of the most popular girls in high school and head cheerleader with a bright future to runaway teenager, Layla had gotten the short end of the stick when it had come to fate. I’m so hungry. Why am I so friggin’ hungry all the time??? Wolf life had made it nearly impossible to follow her former diet, and, at this rate, she didn’t care. However, she had to be quick. She had already been caught once this week, and if she lost her main source of food, she was screwed. Crap…The voice had startled her, despite how soft it was, and any hope of food for the night was lost. Slowly and cautiously raising up, she instinctively let out a low growl. While the girl, standing just off to the side, smelled familiar, she had already been shunned by a group of wolves once.
For the first time, Ariana really understood what Ulfric had meant when he told her to be careful with how she approached other wolves. Not that it was surprising he offered good advice. Did it mean she’d listen? Not really, but in this case she tried to do everything she could to make her body language as relaxing and nonthreatening as possible. She raised her hands gently to show nothing was in them and took one step back. She tried to offer a friendly smile as she explained, “Hey, it’s okay, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Ariana looked over the other girl carefully. She was clearly a little disheveled and her clothes weren’t in the best shape. A dull pang made her chest feel heavy as she realized this girl could be in trouble. She extended her hand and slowly took another step forward. This girl needed her help and she had to convince her to accept it. She was nothing short of determined. Gently, she said, “I’m like you. I want to help. I’m not going to hurt you.”
Her body was starting to shake from fear. With eyes trained on the other girl, Layla slowly backed away from the trash cans. She never let her eyes falter and the growl could still be heard. Had this been a year ago, she would’ve been safe in her own room hanging out with her friends or preparing for the school dance, but this is what life had given her, and the one good thing her parents had ever provided her with was the will to survive. “Why should I trust you? Your kind has turned on me before.” Her breathing was heavy, “Look, all I want is some food, okay? That’s it, and then I’ll leave, and I won’t come back here again.” That was a lie. This was the best place in town for scraps. “Please, I don’t want to hurt you, but I will.” The idea of hurting someone had brought tears to the brims of her eyes, but she was already at the end of her rope. She was desperate. And she was hungry.
The girl before her was so scared and it left Ariana feeling heartbroken for her. It’s true, life wasn’t easy as a wolf in a world where others lived to hurt you, but the wolf before her was really worse for wear and betrayed by their own kind. That’s not how it was supposed to be. Wolves were supposed to stick together. There was no reason this poor girl should be out here dumpster diving for a meal when she was here to help. “I’m sorry others like us have turned on you before. That’s not how it’s supposed to be. We’re meant to stick together. It’s not safe for you to be out here on your own, especially on a full moon.” She let out a deep breath and did her best to keep her features soft. As much as it angered her that another wolf would turn on her, she needed to gain this girl’s trust if she was going to be able to help her. With pleading eyes, she said, “Let me buy you some lunch then. We can get you something fresh and warm.” The sight of tears in the other girl’s eyes made her want to reach out and hug her, but she knew as much wouldn’t be well received. “You don’t have to hurt me. I promise I just want to help. Whatever those other wolves did was wrong. We’re meant to take care of our own and I’m not about to let you go through the dumpster just to get a meal when I’m able to buy lunch for us both.”
Layla’s breathing had slowed. Her eyes darted from the trash can nearest to her and back to the girl in front of her. It’s one hot meal. And if she tries anything, you can just run, Layla. Loosening up some, she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat. Without looking the other girl in the eyes, the eighteen-year-old slowly moved forward. She had debated explaining why she was turned on, but knew it to be too risky, and besides, she didn’t want to lose the one good thing she had going for her at the moment. “I’m sorry I’m, like, really gross. I tried washing my clothes out in a gas station bathroom, but they ran me off. I can just stay outside, a-and I’ll find some way to pay you back, okay? I don’t take handouts.” She kept her distance. Layla knew she couldn’t help the situation she was in, but she had grown up presenting herself in a certain way, and it had been one of the hardest things she was having to learn to let go.
A wave of relief washed over Ariana as the girl agreed to let her buy lunch for them. It was definitely a step in the right direction though she knew she’d need to earn her trust to keep her safe in the long term. Her brow furrowed slightly at the remark of washing her clothes in a gas station. Did she not have somewhere safe to stay? She knew that was something she couldn’t accept. Not when so much kindness had been given to her regarding her own messy situation. “Alright, we’ll touch on the gas station thing in a minute. First things first, I’ll get some takeout and we can go eat at one of the picnic tables at The Common. Also, don’t worry about it, I’ve been on the run before, I know how it goes.” She tried to level with her, relate in some way. As much as she had to face, she’d never had to do it alone. She refused to let this girl go through whatever she was going through on her own. Whether she liked it or not, Ariana was determined to help. “I’m Ariana, by the way. Don’t worry about paying me back. I don’t keep track of that kind of stuff. Besides, we’re supposed to be looking out for each other.” She took a few steps back and gestured toward the main road, “Is there anything in particular you’re in the mood for? It’s your pick.” She offered up a warm smile, trying to slowly make this new wolf feel a bit more comfortable with the situation she was in. Whatever these other wolves had done to her had clearly left her in a panicked state and Ariana did her best to not let it get her pissed off at this very moment. How could anyone show this girl anything but kindness was way beyond her.
It was the first bit of kindness that Layla had seen in a long time. Someone who seemed to genuinely care about her. It didn’t matter that they were a fellow werewolf or not. All that had mattered was that they didn’t push her away, or, worse, try and kill her. Layla blushed at the mention of the gas station. It wasn’t a fact she was proud of, but it was there. And when it happened, she had almost considered stealing something out of spite, mostly, but also to at least have something to eat or drink. But she knew better, and regardless of everything that had happened to her, she still tried to hold onto some of her morals, “I can, and I will. My parents, at least, taught me you don’t let people pity you no matter how bad off you are.” She was the daughter of werewolf hunters, who had ingrained many things into her. Some she respected and others she wanted to rid herself of. “And my name’s Layla.” She wearily stuck out her hand to shake Ariana’s. “I was a vegan in another life, but, honestly, right now, I could eat a mime.” A light smile drew across her lips. All the mime talk in town had her scared shitles, but she had hoped it would at least lighten the mood a little. She had, after all, considered attacking the girl who was fixing to buy her lunch.
Seeing the girl relax a bit made Ariana feel much better about the situation. It was the first step in befriending her and making sure she was safe. Maybe she wasn’t exactly the expert on safe, but she knew they were stronger in numbers. She kept her own features soft, brows unfurrowed and lips slightly curved up in not quite a smile. They were making progress and she wasn’t about to ruin that. Layla was skittish and she didn’t want to spook her. “If it’ll make you feel better, you can pay me back when you’re able to. It’s not pity though. I don’t think any less of you or anything like that. My sister and I have had to camp out and forage while on the run before. I get that life isn’t always kind, especially to people like us, and I think it’s important we make an effort to be here for and protect each other.” If she hadn’t been determined to find a pack of her own before coming to White Crest, learning from Ulfric and meeting the other wolves in town only affirmed her belief. Layla could also clearly use someone on her side, even if it would take time to gain her trust. She reached her own hand out to shake Layla’s, surprised she was even willing to shake her hand with how hesitant she’d been. “Layla… that’s a pretty name. It’s good to meet you.” She smiled and added, “Vegan? I know just the place. There’s a restaurant called Veggie Tables. I’ll pull up their menu on my phone so you can tell me what’d you like. Also, don’t eat the mimes. There’s definitely some sort of weird magic going on there that yes, I want to figure out, but not by it having some sort of weird effect on you.”
As Ariana explained her past, Layla was beginning to trust her more. Of course, there was always that possibility that she was lying. Spinning a story to draw the wolf pup in. And the more the redhead thought about it, the more she could feel her anxiety beginning to build. Slowly pulling her hand away and stepping back from Ariana once more, she began looking around for a possible way out, if she indeed needed to run, “Uh, yeah. I can do that.” Layla’s heart was beginning to sink. Trust had never been an issue in the past. Not until her life had changed. She hated it because she couldn’t take anyone at face value anymore. Maybe this girl really was just trying to help her, and if she ran, she’d never know. You only got so many chances in life and feeling the rumble in her stomach gave her some sort of reason to at least stay for the meal, “Thanks, I like Ariana. Do you...do you prefer Ari for short or…” She was trying her best to make conversation and to not let the thoughts in her head get the better of her, “Don’t worry...mimes aren’t really my thing. So it’s true then...this town has more than just, you know...things like us?” She let her eyes scan the area before looking back over to Ariana.
It was plain for Ariana to see that the other wolf was still anxious. The way her eyes darted around like she was always making sure she had an out had her really worried about what was done to her. She doubted she’d get the full story today, but one day, she hoped Layla would be able to trust her enough to tell it. Holding all of that in was far from healthy and she wanted her to be able to move past whatever was holding her back. At the mention of nicknames, she relaxed a bit herself and smiled, “I do like Ari, but I go by both.” Nicknames were a little more casual and could make the whole getting to know each other prospect easier. She still found herself worried for the other girl. She had serious doubts about her current level of safety though. If she was looking for a meal in the trash and trying to wash her clothes in a gas station, it was unlikely she had a safe place to stay. She could get to that in a little bit, for now joking had to help the situation. She gestured toward the direction of the restaurant before handing her the menu pulled up on her phone so she could lead the way. “Me either, but I’m definitely curious about what’s going on there. There’s definitely more than just us here. On that note, don’t buy the watermelon, it bites and you’ll have to tragically mourn the loss of your favorite combat boots… or like I guess a finger. Anything on the menu looking good though?”
As a child, Layla’s parents had warned her about dangers of the world, which constantly had her looking over her own shoulder. Shadows at night in her bedroom would leave her scared and begging for her parents, and for the first several times she’d cry out in the night, one of them would come to comfort her, but soon they just stopped coming leaving Layla on her own. Of course, by the time she was older, she had managed to suppress those fears and put on a brave face. But after the night of her 18th birthday being left alone in the woods and nearly losing her life from the bite of a werewolf, followed by everything else that had happened, that brave face was nowhere to be found, unless absolutely necessary, “Ari, it is. My friends back home used to call me Lay, for short, kind of as a joke.” It was the first piece of information she had disclosed about herself, and while it wasn’t entirely true (her girlfriend had been the only one who had ever called her that for certain reasons), she was at least throwing a bone to the girl who was offering up kindness. Phone now in hand, Layla followed Ari, as she skimmed through the menu. It had all sounded delicious, and she hadn’t eaten a hot meal in quite some time. Without looking up, she responded, “Biting watermelons?” Her parents had given her information on certain creatures, but never on living watermelons. “Next, I’m guessing you’re going to tell me that the cars around here are alive, too?” Her nose had led her here via scent, but what kind of town was this? “And I’m thinking the Roasted Veggie Burrito is the winner.” In all honesty, the whole menu had looked good, but she wasn’t going to take advantage of Ariana’s kindness. However, she did snoop through the girl’s phone, as she made her way towards the restaurant, but an overwhelming sense of guilt washed over her, and she quickly returned the item; menu back on the screen and everything else closed, “What are you getting?”
It was the smallest bit of information, but Ariana was happy to learn anything she could about this new wolf. The more she knew, the more she’d be able to help. Plus, every other wolf she knew was a good deal older than her. It’d be nice to have someone closer to her in age, given she wasn’t exactly sure how old Layla was. “Lay,” she said easily, “I like that. If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you? Everyone else I know like us is well… older. It’s kind of cool meeting someone closer in age.” She hoped it wasn’t prying too much. She was really doing her best to hold back the millions of questions she had which wasn’t her strong point. Usually everything she was curious about came out in question form at an unreasonably quick pace. It was obvious that would scare Layla off which was the last thing she wanted. It was her duty to help make sure Layla was in a safe situation. Ulfric had taught her a lot about what it meant to be a wolf and he had done everything in his power to help her during this rough patch, she knew it was important for her to do the same for other wolves she met. Layla’s situation seemed to be more dire than most, but there was something so gentle to her mannerisms that made Ariana want to protect her more than anything else. “For what it’s worth, I haven’t seen any living cars. I wouldn’t be too surprised though. This place seems to be some sort of supernatural hotspot. So yeah, the watermelon bites. At least the ones from Nightshade Farmer’s Market do.” She took her phone back as they rounded the corner and arrived at the restaurant. “Roasted Veggie Burrito it is. I’m going for the stir fry myself. I’ll be right back with everything.”
The question wasn’t surprising. It was a basic question. One that she had felt comfortable answering. Besides, what would it hurt knowing her age? After seeing what she needed to see on Ariana’s phone, she felt slightly safer with the girl. However, the mention of there being more wolves kind of made Layla slightly apprehensive about things. Would these wolves accept her if she met them? Or would they shun her just like all the others had? “Thanks, and I’ll be 19 in June. What about you?” She continued moving forward. As the wind shifted, she caught a hint of many different scents filling the air around her, including that of all the food. It was one of the qualities she still hadn’t quite gotten used to, and without realizing it, she was holding her head up to the sky sniffing the air like she had seen her dog do plenty of times. Ari’s comment caught her attention, and she quickly got back to the conversation, “Nightshade Farmer’s Market...I’ll keep that in mind…” She trailed off as she had noticed the restaurant was now in front of her, “Okay, I’ll be here. Hey, and Ari...thanks. You’ve been the kindest person by far in a long time…” She sent a sad smile in the girl’s direction before going and finding a place to sit down. With the wind picking up again, she instinctively started sniffing the air, before noticing someone walk by. “Hey…” Getting the side eye, she quickly looked back down, Whatever…
The whole baby steps thing was working so far. It was a small detail, but Ariana was happy she shared her age. So they were both eighteen. That was pretty cool, especially if she could gain Layla’s trust enough to be actual friends. The thought excited her, but she was working really hard to not be completely overbearing. “I turned 18 this past February. So cool, it’ll be nice to have a friend like me who’s my age.” She watched somewhat amused as Layla sniffed the air. Later, she’d talk over trying to be a little more subtle about what they were in public. She was already so shaken that Ariana decided now wasn’t exactly the time to drop the news that there were hunters here, too. Ariana made her way up to the bar and ordered their meals to go. They were one of those places that tried to minimize waste so she was expecting eco-friendly containers to boot. It smelled good in here. She could smell the familiar smell of onions and garlic through the air. She kept a close eye out the window for Layla, part of her was still worried she’d bolt, but hopefully the promise of food was enough to keep her around. Once the food was ready to go, she made her way back out. “Well, everything smells great,” she said smiling widely, “but let’s head this way so we can grab a seat at some picnic benches. Stir fry definitely isn’t walking and eating food.” Once they settled down at the table, Ariana gave Layla a more serious look, trying to convey her concern through her eyes. “So like, I know you mentioned the gas station thing and you were looking through the trash for food. Do you, um- I don’t want to be intrusive, I can tell you’re nervous about this whole thing and trust me, I’m really holding back the normal speed I ask questions at, but I can’t let this one go. Do you have somewhere safe to stay?”
Her eyes shifted when she saw Ariana come back out of the restaurant. She could already smell the food, and it was making her mouth water. Climbing to her feet, she followed Ari to the picnic tables. Taking a seat across from her, Layla was trying to be patient in her wait for the burrito, but her stomach had already been growling fiercely, and when the food was passed to her, she tore into the packaging, until she realized how much of an animal she truly looked like, “Sorry, I was raised with manners. I promise. It’s just been so long…” Slowing herself down, she looked the food over and grabbed a plastic fork and knife. It took a moment, but with a deep breath, Layla had almost completely changed from being overly timid to looking like a normal human being. Back straight, despite her disheveled appearance, and a certain calmness about her demeanor, “If I’m going to enjoy this meal, I’m going to be as normal as I can about it.” She looked to Ariana, “To answer your question, no, not really. I sometimes sneak into one of the rooms over on...Torrence Street. I think that’s where it’s at. Or find a spot under one of the nearby bridges, if it’s not raining.” She cut into the burrito, and layered all of the veggies that had fallen out, onto her fork. The bite was like Heaven. “O-M-G. This is so good.”
Ariana left a soft laugh as Layla began to devour her food. She had barely got her own stir fry container open and Layla was already munching away. Poor girl must have really been hungry. As much was obvious enough by the dumpster diving, but a pang of sympathy hit her. She hated to think that Layla was constantly hungry. Although she and Celeste may have struggled from time to time, they were always able to catch food and cook it over a fire at the very least. “Don’t worry about it. I don’t care if you’re a neat or messy eater so I won’t judge you. If manners make you feel better though then go for it.” She tentatively took a few bites of her veggie stir fry. It was really good, the flavors and cooks on the vegetables were spot on, it could just use some beef. She looked up to Layla and listened intently as she spoke. There was no way she could let her go to sneaking into crappy motel rooms or sleeping under bridges. Not only was she a pretty girl, but there were other things besides them roaming around. “I know you may be scared right now and I probably haven’t earned your trust yet, but I can’t just let you stay out on the streets. It’s not safe out there, especially if you’re new to all of this like I think you may be. I’m staying with a friend for safety reasons, he’s a werewolf as well, but I know for a fact he’d feel the same and wouldn’t mind if you came back with me. You can also totally wash your clothes and stuff too.” She knew she was putting a lot on Ulfric, but from what he told her about how packs work and their duty to each other, she knew he wouldn’t want her to leave Layla to fend for herself on the streets. Ariana dove into her own lunch and began to devour her own meal. She giggled slightly at Layla’s raving review. “I’m glad you’re enjoying it,” she said with a small smile between bites, “Stir fry is also pretty good. I don’t normally eat a lot of vegetarian dishes.”
If the people in her high school had seen her now, from riches to rags, she would have definitely been knocked out of her spot on the squad and made fun of. While taunting and teasing was never her thing in high school, she had known some of the other popular girls to do it. Luckily enough, she had just gotten out of that environment before her life did a complete 180. But she had wondered what Frankie would have thought of her new lifestyle. Surely, she wouldn’t have judged her or ended things over petty ideals that some of the other high school girls valued so much. She could, however, understand if she had ended things for her safety and for the sheer fact that werewolves and hunters were pretty much non-existent in the world her girlfriend grew up in. And it wasn’t like Layla had said goodbye either, “I do.” She was lost in thought, and instead of keeping it to herself, it had accidentally slipped out, “I care, because I want that normalcy back into my life. I just want to be a teenage girl about to start college. To be back at home with my parents, despite what they did to me, and most of all to be with Frankie.” Tears were rolling down her cheeks, and she had put her plasticware down at some point. When she realized what she had done, she quickly wiped her eyes. She could spend another night out on the streets watching her back for mimes and other creatures that wanted her dead, or she could have a safe place to stay. Leg shaking out of nervousness, Layla bit at her bottom lip looking past Ariana, while giving the proposition thought, “You know what?” Looking the girl square in the eyes, she gave her an answer, “Fuck it. I’ll go. It’s not like I have anything left to lose. If you and your pack have any desire to kill me, then so be it. It’s better than having some fucking mime do it while I try to sleep. From what my parents told me, wolves have a certain way of doing things...I’d rather go out by my own kind, then by something else in this God awful town.” Leg still shaking, she grabbed her fork and knife and resumed eating in silence.
Listening to Layla speak and seeing her break down in tears left Ariana with a heavy feeling. What the hell happened to her? Whoever hurt her had clearly caused a fair amount of damage and she wanted nothing more than to help take some of that pain away. This was progress and she hoped opening up helped her feel better. She was clearly holding on to way too much. Ariana carefully went to the other side of the table and opened her arms, “I don’t want to hurt you, but if you’re comfortable with it, I’d like to hug you. I know we just met, but I really hate that you’re so upset and hugs usually help me feel better.” She waited patiently for an answer. Her new friend had only just begun feeling more comfortable with her, she didn’t want to ruin that by crossing boundaries Layla wasn’t comfortable with. “I’m sorry that whatever happened turned your life upside down. We can do that though, work on bringing some normalcy back to your life. Maybe getting a job or enrolling in classes. I don’t know who this Frankie is, but if you were to get in touch with them, would it become unsafe for you or them?” Though she knew she shouldn’t just be inviting people to stay with them, she still felt so much better knowing that Layla wouldn’t be out facing the world completely on her own. “Thank you for coming with me,” she said calmly, “I know you may not trust me, but I can promise you that no matter what, we won’t hurt you. If anyone tries, they’ll have to go through me first and trust me when I say, I’m way tougher than I look.”
Layla continued to eat, her leg not stopping, until she saw Ariana move to her side of the table. Refusing to look at her, she paused giving thought to if she wanted to be touched or not. Ari was sweet. And so far, Layla had found no plausible reason as to why the girl would try to do anything. Putting down her fork and knife, she looked up to her and nodded. She hadn’t felt a hug or human affection in so long. Back home, it had been one of her favorite things to do. Giving hugs had been her thing, so knowing that she was about to return one gave her a small sense of comfort, “I’d like that...normalcy. Maybe I’ll be able to find some sense of a purpose. I don’t know.” She let out a quivering sigh at the thought of Frankie, “Frankie’s my girlfriend. Or was...I don’t know if she’d want anything to do with me now, and I don’t know if it would be safe. The last thing I want to do is bring any kind of distress or drama to your group, especially when I don’t even know if they’ll want me there. And thanks...You seem pretty scrappy. Also, you might want to hold your breath, because even I don’t like the way I smell.”
All it took was a little bit of patience. Sure, they still had a lot to learn about each other, but Ariana was able to gain some semblance of trust from her. There was still so much she wanted to know and wanted to tell her, but they’d have time for that. Right now, her tendency to ask too many questions without really thinking it through wouldn’t do either of them well. It did make her happy that Layla was accepting a hug from her. She paid no mind to the fact that maybe she didn’t smell great right now. She wrapped her arms tightly around Layla and hugged her for a moment. “I know things may seem messy right now, but we’ll figure it out, okay?” She pulled away and nodded at the mention of her girlfriend. That had to be difficult, being separated from someone you loved by force. “I’m sorry it’s not safe to see her anymore. I know that has to really suck. And don’t worry about us. It’s not like I’m perfect and don’t come with my own load of crap. I know Ulf will want you there. He’s the actual best and the first wolf I’ve ever known. He’s done so much for me in the short time I’ve known him. Then, my sister, Celeste, is awesome too. Also, don’t worry about that. You’ll be good as new after a hot shower.” She finished off the last of her stir fry and threw it into the bag she brought it over in for easy disposal. She gently pat Layla’s shoulder and said, “I’m ready whenever you are. I’ll let Ulf know we’re both coming.”
The warm embrace of Ariana’s touch had Layla fighting back tears. It felt good just to be held and cared for in that brief moment of time. It was something she had missed greatly. And for a quick second, she let her mind think it was Frankie holding her. Pulling away, she forced back the lump of emotion that hung in her throat. Nodding ‘yes’ to Ariana’s question, she finished off the last of her burrito. The food and hug had been two things she had needed, and it seemed to make this one of the best days in a long damn time. If the home she was being promised was anything like Ari had claimed it to be, Layla could count this as definitely being the best day of her life, since becoming a werewolf. “I’ll see her again someday, even if it’s from afar. I have to. She’s my everything. Please forgive me if I don’t seem too excited to meet your sister and friend. I just…” She let out a soft laugh, “You know...I don’t trust people as easily as I once did, but I’m sure they're lovely.” She wadded up the paper her food was in. The pat on the shoulder had made her jump slightly, but she quickly calmed down, “I’m sorry. Habit.” Climbing to her feet, she glanced around town, before looking back to Ariana, “Ready.”
With everything going on and Lucas refusing help at every turn, Ariana felt relieved that she could help someone else for once. More than anything, she wanted to help them both make roots and find a sense of normalcy in all the craziness. Whatever it was that Layla so skittish, she hoped they could work through. The most important thing was that for now, she was safe and not actually starving. Ariana gave her a small but hopeful smile, “I get wanting to check on her. I can’t imagine how tough that must be.” She nodded and understood completely. Layla was hardly eager to meet her and Ari knew it’d take time for her to feel completely at ease with all of them. “It’s okay, I understand. I don’t know what you’ve been through, but I know it can be hard to rebuild trust in people again. All I can do is give you a reason to rebuild that trust.” Touching Layla’s shoulder to comfort her had been a reflex and she felt bad as soon as she felt her jump, “Sorry. Habit on my end too.” With indication that Layla was ready to go, she slung her backpack over her shoulder and said, “Follow me, it’s a bit of the ways out, but it won’t take us too long. I promise you get dibs on the first shower. You can even borrow some PJs or something while we wash your clothes.”

MAY FULL FLOWER MOON RITUAL – RECOGNIZING VALUE
Tumblr media

Ritual Begins
I cast this circle all around, high above and below the ground, a sacred place between time and space, where all are welcome and all are safe!
Calling the Quarters
East
As the spring winds slip ever so gracefully across the land, we turn our eyes to the East and give high praises to the great spirits of Air.  We welcome you to our circle on this night when the moon is full and shining across the world. <light yellow candle>
South
The last of the warming rays of the sun have just dropped beneath the horizon as we turn to the South, where the great Fire spirits make their home.  We give thanks for your attendance in our circle tonight and offer high thanks and praises for the gift of light which you’ve bestowed upon us.  Keep our path illuminated as we move from place to place so that no harm or accident will fall our way. <light red candle>
West
The sound of moving Water conjures up memories of things both beautiful and filled with adventure, as we look to the West, we are filled with a sense of comfort, joy, and protection.  You honor us by joining our circle and offering us the endless gift of cleansing waters, which regenerate both our bodies and our spirit. <light blue candle>
North
Finally all souls turn toward the North, where the great spirits of Earth make their homes.  Those who have traveled through the densest forests and across the highest mountains, still find the time to share their blessings to us mortals.  We give high praise for the many gifts, the teachings, and for attending this circle tonight. <light green candle>
Great Goddess, Great God, we humbly, and with great praises and honor present ourselves as our truest selves.  We are those who work the land, and drive the herds.  We are servants, messengers, disciples, and students.  We are kings and queens and lords of our own domains.  We are individuals, and yes, we are a family.  Together you bring balance to the world and the world smiles upon us.  Thank you for attending this circle on this Full Flower Moon  <light Goddess & God candles>
Musical Interlude
Choosing the right music to complement your full moon ritual is paramount – I’ve been known to pull in all different types of genres, but I don’t think I’ve ever chose a full-on bone jarring heavy metal song…that is until today.  Out song is called Pagan Moon, by Beherit.  It’s dark sounding, but musically tight and you’ll find yourself ‘into it’ pretty quickly.
Opening statement
We gather tonight under this full flower moon, perhaps in smaller groups than last year, but certainly bigger than last month when the great virus was upon the land and we were alone.  Now that the world is starting to once again find itself and people are remembering that terrible things have come, but those terrible things also go, we are coming back to life.  And yet, we do so with so many questions waiting to be answered.  We wonder whether the world will ever go back to the way, “it used to be”.
At this point, none of us know what the future might bring, but we can appreciate what the past is teaching us.  I say teaching, because what we’ll be discussing tonight hasn’t really been solidified as “taught” and still has a chapter or two, to be read.  Each month gives us an opportunity to look outward and learn from the world from a scholarly approach.  If we look closely enough, with a free and open mind, we can see the future…or one possible future.  Use the energy of the Full Flower Moon to supercharge your mind’s eye and let it take a look around.
Recognizing Value
The great virus of 2020 should have opened everyone’s eyes to recognizing value.  I’m not talking about net income, the stock market, or even a purse full of cash.  No, what I’m talking about is human value.  When the virus took hold, some people disappeared, and some people stepped up their game.  Some people were in high demand, while others temporarily faded from our thoughts.  We watched as some people put their lives at risk, countless numbers of times, while others went into hibernation.  Some spoke, some even complained, while others let their actions speak for them.
Our world has just received a wonderful eye-opening and in case you missed it, the full flower moon is a perfect time to get caught up.  Up until now, those who ran big companies were considered valuable, as were celebrities, and professional athletes.  Internet superstars and talking heads had audiences of millions.  We were programmed to consume, collect, and once we’ve had our fun, to dispose of those things and buy the newest one.  We were in fact, being brainwashed into thinking what was wrong, was actually right.
Fast forward to today.  Look at the clerk in your local supermarket, or the first responder who lives in your subdivision.  Look at the guys who pick up your trash and the ladies who are manning the school lunch counters.  Across the land, regular people are doing incredible things.  Your mail is still being delivered, your doctor is still treating patients, and the highways are still filled with trucks moving fresh produce, milk, eggs, and meat from growing areas to your local store.  Field workers are still picking fresh greens and warehouse workers are still packing and shipping everything from canned soup to microwaves.  Despite the possibility of infection, these so-called, entry level or bottom of the ladder workers are punching in every day to keep the world running.
By now you’re probably deep in thought about what I’ve just stated.  You’re probably thinking differently about the people that may have seemed invisible to you just a few short months ago.  You’re starting to see that not only are they valuable, but they are very valuable.  I also bet many of you will leave here and be forever changed.  You’ll not only say hello to the woman stocking the shelves, but you’ll do so with an appreciative smile on your face.  You might even go out of the way to tell a police officer, thanks for being on the job.  You’ll see that value isn’t measured by giving a speech or running for office.  Value is earned.
Clearing and Cleansing on the Full Flower Moon
Each month we examine how our lives have changed, both for the good and for the worse.  We also examine what events, actions, or people contributed to those changes.  And once again we see both the good and the not-so-good.  We see that some things are propelling us forward, while others are holding us back.  This is very important, because if we’re held back for some reason, then we cannot grow.
Negativity and negative people often go hand in hand when it comes to roadblocks.  Anger, impatience, greed, manipulation, jealousy, lust, corruption, and laziness are all products of negativity.  Narcissism, manipulation, control issues and bullying are all tools of negative people.  When we allow those feelings to remain inside us, or those negative people to keep influencing us, we start to forget about the important things in life like love, compassion, helpfulness, and the desire to become something better than we already are.
This full flower moon offers us the opportunity to make a course correction.  Just as Mother Nature presents the earth with a fresh coat of foliage and flowers each season, you can use this ritual to clear out all the weeds and debris and replace them with a beautiful array of fresh colors and renewed feelings.
If you can see negativity in your life, now is the time to banish it, once and for all.   Our ancestors have taught us that all things can be washed away in the cleansing flames.  Together we can witness as the collective baggage of the past is consumed and the smoke travels far away.  By burning the remnants of things useless and without value, we free ourselves to find new and positive things to fill those empty spaces.
<Offer each person paper/pencil to write things down>
Write down the things you wish to rid yourself of, but be realistic.  If you only halfway feel ready about something, then don’t rush it.  Each month offers another chance to cleanse and clear.  When you are ready, approach the fire and burn your list.  As you burn each item, state the following, “I give up freely that which is no longer serving me”
<Once everyone has burned their items, have the group join hands and say the following>
We gather tonight by the light of this Full Flower Moon; we feel the warmth of spring on our faces and know that the heat of summer is soon to be realized.  The light has already returned and we are have shown we are ready to refresh our lives by first ridding our bodies and minds of that which no longer serves us.  We are now cleansed with the great fires of the South carrying the negative energies away. May the next turn of the Wheel bring us love and compassion, abundance and prosperity, fertility and life – As the moon above, so the earth below. So Mote it Be!
Once you’ve chosen to release the negativity, you will be lighter and ready to take on something new and positive.  Fill those spaces you’ve just cleared with something positive and then feed it and you’ll soon feel growth from within; growth that will be beneficial to your everyday life, but also growth that will help build a solid foundation for your future.
Tumblr media
Cakes & Ale
Depending on the weather and the make-up of your group, you may choose to have a few libations and food at this time.  Talk, share stories, and get to know your fellow citizens of the earth.
Closing the Full Flower Moon Circle
Earth spirits, we offer our eternal thanks for joining us in our full flower moon circle.  All thoughts are on planting, growing, and spending time with the earth.  Bless us and bless that which we plant in the coming months. We bid you farewell. <extinguish green candle>
Water spirits, thank you for your presence in our circle.  Before you leave, we ask but one simple thing. Grant us ample rain as we nurture the delicate seedlings and herbs, in their infancy.  We bid you farewell. <extinguish blue candle>
Fire spirits, without your presence in our circle, our cleansing ritual would not be possible.  We continue to honor your light, the heat, and the ability to transform our lives.  May we leave here tonight with eyes wide open to the possibilities of great things in our future.  We bid you farewell. <extinguish red candle>
Air spirits, so much gratitude and so many praises for your presence in our circle this night. The light winds on our faces constantly remind us that the most powerful things are often unseen and unpredictable.  Leave us with the understanding that we do not need to know why everything is as it is, we just need to be thankful for it.  We bid you farewell. <extinguish yellow candle>
Great Goddess and Great God, we thank you both for your wisdom and love.  Together you have shown us that all things possess two sides, two energies, and only together can total balance be achieved.  Give us the guidance to look at all things in life with an even approach and open mind. <extinguish Goddess candle>
This circle is now open!

The first time I ever heard of Soapy Smith was in an old cartoon. Indeed, for the longest time, I put him right up there with the likes of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse. Someplace in my teenaged years, I discovered he was a real person when I was flipping through an old west book that belonged to my father.
It wasn’t until I became interested in the Old West and especially the bad guys who cruised through my neck of the woods, that I became aware of what an interesting character he was.
Soapy Smith was a conman. At least that’s the nicest thing we can say about him. The way he operated sounds more like something a Mafia Don or head of a drug cartel might do. Had he been working today, the FBI would be camped out on his doorstep just waiting for him to do something.
A list of the illegal things he was into reads like the worst sins in the Bible. He was heavy into prostitution, buying off public officials, and cheating people out of money and properties. At times he operated like Robin hood. Other times like the Devil himself.
Soapy’s real name was Jefferson Randolph Smith II. A pretty impressive name for a not so common crook.
Tumblr media
He was born in 1860 in Coweta County, Georgia. Soapy came from a family that was well educated and wealthy. His grandfather owned a plantation and had been a popular legislator. His dad was a lawyer.
All that changed with the South losing the Civil war. Broke, the Smiths moved to Round Rock, Texas, in 1876. Soapy began his career as a conman there.
He left home after the death of his mother and went to Ft. Worth. Here’s where he formed a close-knit gang of assorted other con men and thieves to work for him. Soon, he wore the crown of the “king of the frontier con men.” He was also forming the philosophy and tactics that would make him a well-known crime boss.
The gang subscribed to the philosophy of “A fool, and his money is soon parted.”
They moved from town to town with one objective: to separate people from their money or property. They did this through prostitution, the old Shell Game, three-card Monte, and rigged poker games.
In the late 1870s, early 80s, Soapy came to Denver, Colorado. It’s in Denver that he earned the name he’d be known by.
You have to admit; he had a great racket going here. What he’d do is sell bar soap. Well, so far, no harm done.
After all, there are perfectly legitimate companies that sell soap. Some have even done things like put drinking glasses and towels in as a reason to buy their product. Or promised your whites will be dazzling white and can remove that pizza stain from your favorite T-shirt.
Soapy took this to a whole new level. He’d have several unwrapped bars of soap on his stand. While he’s telling everyone how great the soap is by telling them that they’ll get their muddy pants clean or their whites whiter than white, he started wrapping money around some of the bars.
He’d wrap different values of anywhere from a one-dollar bill to a hundred dollars around the bars. He then folded the money wrapped bars into paper, so they matched a large tub full of soap he was selling. He then APPEARED to mix the soap bars into the bars in the tub.
When people started buying them, a plant out in the audience would announce he got a bar with money and flash a bar that had money around it. It had the desired effect. Everyone was buying the soap.
Now a hundred dollars doesn’t sound like a lot of money by today’s standards. But remember, we’re talking the 1870s here. That one hundred dollars would translate out to a little less than two thousand dollars in 2020. I know many people who willingly lay down one, five, even more dollars to buy a lottery ticket with odds against winning so high that one could say you have zero chance of winning.
Soapy preyed on the same thing people today hope for, a break. And he was convincing enough to make them think that it could happen.
The police quickly figured out what was going on, and this is where Soapy got his handle. A Denver Policeman named John Holland arrested him. While writing the incident up in his logbook, he forgot Soapy’s full name and gave him the nickname of “Soapy.” The name stuck, and he became “Soapy Smith.”
He was able to use the same scam for the next 20 years. It and other scams helped finance a criminal empire.
If there were a manual out there for running a criminal empire, then Soapy was reading it every day and following it to the letter. To protect his kingdom, Soapy paid off police officers, judges, and even politicians and used almost the same tactics to build three major criminal organizations in Denver (1886-1895), Creede, Colorado (1892), and Skagway, Alaska (1897-1898).
As the crime boss of Denver, Soapy did what the likes of Capone and others would do. Typically criminals move about to avoid detection. Not soapy. He owned City Hall and the police and was able to avoid prosecution.
In 1888 he opened the Tivoli Club at the corner of Market and 17th Street. The building was a combination saloon and gambling house. According to legend, the words “caveat emptor” or “Let the buyer beware” was above the staircase leading up to the gambling games. I guess you couldn’t say he didn’t warn them.
The old club is on the left and no longer exists.
Several “front” businesses such as cigar shops and the like opened into poker games and the brothel that operated in the back rooms. Fraudulent lottery shops, stock exchanges, and auction houses also abounded.
Because of payoffs, some local police officers refused to arrest Smith and his associates. Others were afraid of him and his organization. Even when they were arrested, a cadre of friends, lawyers, and associates was ready to get them out of jail.
Also, Smith wasn’t alone in trying to be the crime boss of Denver. There were several attempts on his life, and he shot several assailants. He became increasingly known for his gambling and bad temper.
In 1892, things changed in Denver. There was a massive move to get rid of gambling, and there were saloon reforms. Seeing the change, Smith sold the Tivoli, packed up his operation, and moved to Creede, Colorado.
By having several of his working girls cozy up to property owners, they convinced them to sign over their leases. Soon, Soapy acquired numerous lots on Creede’s main street and rented them to associates. Once he had the backing, he announced he was the camp boss. In short, using his money and properties, Soapy proclaimed himself mayor.
Tumblr media
Creede before the Fire
Soapy opened the Orleans Club. With the help of his brother-in-law and a gang member, William Sidney “Cap” Light, who was now the Deputy Sheriff, he started his second empire.
Smith provided an order of sorts for the small town. He also protected his friends and associates from the Legitimate Town Council and sent troublemakers packing. To curry favor with the locals, he used his money by helping the poor, built churches, and buried the unfortunate.
Along the way, some of his associates became friends with another old west outlaw named Bob Ford, who shot and killed Jesse James. There have been rumors, mostly unsupported, that Soapy may have had something to do with Ford’s killing. The suspicion is that Soapy at least suggested it to O’Kelley (who killed Ford). If Soapy did, O’Kelley never confirmed it and took it to his grave.
What is known is that Soapy left Creede to return to Denver just a few days before the great Creede fire destroyed the community. The situation had changed in Denver, making it possible for him to return to his criminal enterprises there.
Besides, the silver in Creede had begun to play out, and who wants to be king of a ghost town.
Soapy was soon back up to his old tricks in Denver. But the State of Colorado was about to interfere with his life.
Davis Waite was elected Governor of Colorado on a reform platform. One of his first tasks was to fire three Denver officials he felt weren’t abiding by his mandates. They refused to leave and were soon joined by others who felt their jobs were threatened. The state militia was called to remove those fortified in City Hall.
Smith joined the corrupt officeholders and police in City Hall. He was given a commission as a Deputy Sheriff. Armed with rifles and dynamite, he and several others climbed to the top of City Hall with the intent to fight off any attackers.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and the incident known as the “City Hall War” came to a close.
Smith continued being the crime boss, but soon he got a little too big for his own good. His patrons in the City Hall and other places could no longer offer the protection he needed. When he was charged with the attempted murder of a saloon manager, he ran, leaving others to take control of his various enterprises.
His running took him to Skagway, Alaska.
It was 1897, and gold was the attraction for many. Soapy was soon up to his old tricks there. His first try at taking over Skagway failed. A Miner’s Committee encouraged (whatever that means) him to leave. He didn’t return till the following year.
He got a U.S. marshal on his payroll and sat about collecting friends and allies. His best front was a Telegraph Office. For a fee, they’d send a telegraph message for a miner. Since telegraph lines hadn’t reached Skagway yet, any messages sent went from the desk to the trash can. The place also served as a front for rigged poker games.
Smith opened a saloon called Jeff Smith’s Parlor. Besides drinking, it also offered the same rigged games he’d ran for years as well as the usual house of ill-repute. Despite having a city infrastructure, Smith’s Saloon became the “the real City Hall” because he was running Skagway at this point.
The problem was there were some solid citizens in the community, and they were getting tired of Smith and his gang. They knew all about Smith and companies deception, and so they formed a group known as the “The Committee of 101” threatened to expel Smith and company.
Smith retaliated by forming his own Law and Order society with 317 members and forced the vigilantes into submission.
The war for Skagway had begun.
July 8 marks the day Soapy Smith met his maker.
The previous day, a miner named John Stewart came in with a sack of gold. A couple of Soapy’s associates separated him from it in a game of three-card monte. When Stewart balked at paying them, the men grabbed the money and ran.
This is what Stewart said occurred:
I told Foster I should hold him for the money, and the old man, Van Triplett, said we acted as if we could not trust him, and gave some of the money back, and then said he would give us a chance to win it [all back], so Foster turned the right card and [Triplett] started to give him the money, but said, ‘Supposing you had bet that in earnest, did you have the money to put up?’ Foster said, ‘No,’ and turning to me said, ‘You have the money,’ and I said no, I did not have any money; that he took it all, but he said, ‘You have some dust,’ and wanted me to get it just to show the old man that we had the money in case the bet had been a real one. Bowers and I went to Kaufman’s store to get the money and Van Triplett and Foster remained behind. We came back with the dust and I unrolled it and showed them the sack, and the old man said he did not know if that was gold, and Bowers said, ‘Open it and show it to him, as he don’t know gold dust when he sees it,’ but I did not open it, and [was] just about to roll it up again, when Foster grabbed it and handing it to the old man, said, “Git!” and I started to grab the old man when they held me and said if I made a noise it would not be well for me. I pulled away from them and started after the old man, but could not see him and then went across the street and asked a party where there was an officer: that I had been robbed of $3,000 by some men over there.
The officer he went to was Deputy U.S. Marshal Sylvester S. Taylor. It didn’t get him anywhere because Taylor was on Soapy’s payroll, and he told Stewart that if he stayed quiet about the matter, he’d see what he could do.
Stewart didn’t stay quiet. He told anyone who would listen what had happened. Soon, the streets were starting up in an uproar.
Things concerning the incident get a little confusing here. Some say that Soapy dug in and said that if Stewart hadn’t made such a big deal about it, he would make amends. Others say he would make amends and promised his mn would do nothing of the sorts in the future.
According to a promise made by Smith, the money was supposed to have been returned by 4 PM that day. But 4 PM came and went, and no money. Word reached Smith that there was trouble coming, and he is reputed to have said, “By God, trouble is what I’m looking for.”
Trouble arrived in the form of U.S. Commissioner Charles A. Sehibrede. He demanded that Soapy meet him at the Marshal’s office. In the Marshal and a reporter’s presence, Sehibrede demanded that the money be returned, and the people who did this arrested.
I don’t know if he got the answer he expected because Smith stuck to his story. It’s reported that:
.. the boys who had the money won it in a fair game, and they should keep it. He also said he had a hundred men who would stand behind him and see that they were protected. The judge finally told him he [Smith] could not afford to stand up for a gang of thieves, but he [Smith] almost screamed—”Well, Judge, declare me in with the thieves. I’ll stay with them,” and with that he passionately beat the table with his fist and left the room.
After he left, Sehibrede asked if he swore out warrants, would the Marshal arrest them. He was told he would.
But the time for a negotiated settlement had run out.
Two separate vigilante groups decided to do something about it. The larger group, the “Citizens Committee,” had a meeting at Sylvester Hall. So many people showed up the facility couldn’t accommodate them all. Additionally, several of Smith’s men showed up, intending to disrupt the meeting.
As a result, another meeting was held at the Skagway Wharf Improvement Company building, most commonly known as Juneau Wharf.
At the meeting, four men were appointed to keep trouble makers (Smith’s men) out. Of the four, the only one who was armed was Frank Reid, and that was with a .38 caliber pistol.
About nine that evening, Smith received a message that things were about to get uglier and that if he wanted to do something, this was the time to do it.
He decided to attend the meeting. Arming himself with a rifle, Soapy took a walk to the wharf in the company of several of his men. Ordering his men to stay back a little, he walked on.
According to accounts, the men were in at least three different groups. When Soapy encountered the first group, he ordered them off the wharf. They were happy to comply.
The second group of men was Josias Tanner, a ship and barge Captain, and Jesse Murphy, a railroad employee. Soapy walked past them without acknowleding their existence.
That left Reid standing between him and the meeting.
According to accounts, Reid told Soapy he couldn’t go any further. The two men began to argue and swear at each other. Now here’s where witness accounts differ.
They all agree that reid still had his 38 in his belt, and Soapy had the rifle on his shoulder. No one seems to agree on who shot first. Some say Reid drew and fired, others that Soapy tried to fire at Reid. What is agreed on is that the Shootout on Juneau Wharf began unexpectedly.
Allegedly, Soapy brought the rifle off his shoulder. If he meant to shot Reid or club him aside isn’t clear, but Reid blocked it with his arm.  Somehow, Reid got cut in all this by the rifle but managed to push it down and drew his own weapon. He pointed it at Soapy and pulled the trigger. The hammer fell on a defective round and didn’t discharge.
Someplace in here, Soapy is supposed to have said, “My God, don’t shoot!”
Soapy jerked the rifle away and accounts state was that both men fired at the same time. There were at least five shots fired. Reid took a bullet in his leg and then fired off two rounds at Soapy.
One bullet grazed Soapy’s left arm while the other went through the left thigh right above the knee.
Soapy chambered another round, and this time shot Reid in the stomach. Reid collapsed to the dock, mortally wounded.
As Smith’s men rushed toward their wounded leader, Jess Murphy, one of the guards along with Reid, grabbed Soapy’s rifle away from him and, turning it towards Soapy, pulled the trigger.
This might also have been where Soapy uttered his last words of “My God. Don’t shoot!”
It didn’t do any good. Smith died on the spot.
As Soapy’s men surged forward, Murphy pointed the rifle at them. One of Soapy’s men is supposed to have pulled his weapon and aimed it at Tanner. But seeing Murphy aiming his boss’s rifle at him and the approach of “Committee” men pouring out of the meeting, he didn’t fire. “Someone is supposed to have yelled, “They killed Soapy, and if you don’t get going, they’ll kill you too.”
Before long, all of Soapy’s men had either fled or been rounded up. The Army came in to keep the peace and threatened martial law.
Stewart’s gold was found with Soapy’s possessions, and except for $600.00 was all accounted for. It was returned to him.
Tanner became a deputy U.S. Marshal.
Frank Reid died of his wounds twelve days later. His funeral was the largest Skagway had seen up to that point. His headstone was inscribed with “He gave his life for the honor of Skagway.”
The king of con men was buried several yards outside the city cemetery.
The Bad Guys of the San Luis Valley – Part 3 – Soapy Smith The first time I ever heard of Soapy Smith was in an old cartoon. Indeed, for the longest time, I put him right up there with the likes of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse.

16 Good Habits to Achieve Success in Business
Each of us wants to achieve goals: create a successful career and achieve success in business, and live a decent life. But much depends not only on our desires but also on our character. There is a pearl of well-known wisdom: “Do an action, get a habit.
If you get a habit, you create a character. If you create a character, you will receive fate. ” Any psychologist will tell you that most of the problems are the cause of our attitude to our environment and habits. Good habits can make you a successful businessman and just a good person.
Therefore, in this article we will give you some tips to help you become better and progress every day.
1. Set Day Mode and Start Your Morning with Physical Exercise
Morning is a very special part of the day that sets the tone for the rest of the day. Of course, all successful people know about it and use the potential of morning hours to the maximum. If you ask any successful person how he spends the morning, he will answer you that every day he performs certain actions in the morning that keep him in good shape and give energy.
Usually it is physical exercises (strength training, yoga, running, stretching, etc.), meditation for 10-15 minutes, reading useful literature, and sometimes a simple conversation with your spouse/partner, when you can share thoughts and plans.
Think about what morning ritual will set you up for a successful and productive day. It may be a glass of water with lemon after waking up, but the daily performance of even such a simple ritual will certainly bear fruit. This is useful not only for your health, but also for your discipline and inner harmony.
2. Do What Must Be Done Today
All successful people adhere to the principle of “do not put things off for later.” They well understand that only the moment here and now has real power. Usually, people put things off until tomorrow, Monday, at the beginning of the new year, because they think that later they will do better than today. But this is a very common misconception because tomorrow there will be new tasks and tasks that will also require their fulfillment.
Incomplete and deferred affairs take away a lot of your energy, which you could direct to new achievements. You want to start a new day with pure consciousness, and not think about the need to “redo work or be distracted by trifles”? It may be better in your to-do list for today to be only 3 points, not 10, but by the end of the day you will complete them. Learn to do everything planned for today. Such a path will lead to effective time management.
3. Focus on What’s Important
One of the most useful and necessary habits for a modern person is the habit of focusing on the most important. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, the company was in a state of destruction. And it was her lack of focus that destroyed her. The company was sprayed on trifles and let out already more than 300 products.
Therefore, the first thing Jobs did was to reduce the number of manufactured products to 10. When he focused all his attention on several of the most important products, the company began to develop again and became the powerful brand that we now know. Keep it simple and keep your focus. There is an interesting saying about this aspect: “One full glass is better than ten slightly filled ones.”
4. Turn Obstacles into a Story of Success
How do people usually respond to the word no? Having been refused, they stop and stop taking further actions. How does a successful person act?
Each “no” makes it even stronger and more persistent on the way to its goals, bringing it closer to “yes”. A successful person simply adds this factor to his plan and tries to take it into account. But this does not scare him away from actions and desire to achieve the goal.
As Nietzsche said: “Those things that do not kill us make us stronger.” Successful people know that failure trains our character and the will to succeed. They celebrate their failures and become tempered during their overcoming. In other words, the more obstacles a person encounters on his way now, the more success he will achieve in the future. Remember – success depends on failures; do not give up when they occur.
5. Finding Positivity in Negative Circumstances
Of course, sometimes deals break down and a potential partner can go to a competitor. But it’s important to understand that this is not the end of your story. Besides, negative and negative emotions will not bring any benefit either to their health, or personal life, or business. That is why they can find positive aspects in any negative situation.
Successful and prosperous people are distinguished by a great vision, so they know that today’s unpleasant circumstances tomorrow can turn into a blessing and present a surprise. And such trifles as a stain on clothes or a broken teapot are not worthy of their attention at all – there is reason to buy a new beautiful shirt and a teapot of the latest model.
For example, Thomas Edison conducted more than 10,000 experiments to improve the incandescent lamp. And here is what he said about this: “I did not suffer defeats. I just found 10 thousand ways that do not work. “Every failure is a step forward. Analyze your actions, change the strategy, and do it again. Repeat until successful.
6. Leave Your Comfort Zone
This is evidenced by almost every psychologist, motivator, and business coach. No matter how trite it sounds, but a new challenge will be useful to you. Because we are either progressing or degrading, we cannot just stand in one position. If we are not trying to overcome a new peak, it means that we are sliding to its foot.
Overcoming the comfort zone is one of the most significant steps on the path to becoming an individual. For life to shine with new colors and reach a new level, you need to be able to cross the line with the inscription “I am so comfortable.” This is fraught with certain fears and stress, but for successful people, leaving the comfort zone is an important way not to stand still and develop, because only in this way you can realize yourself and find your calling.
Of course, it is not at all necessary to immediately turn your life upside down and introduce cardinal changes. For starters, it’s enough, for example, to get up early or change the diet and each time take ever wider steps beyond the boundaries of comfort and celebrate your small victories. After all, even the longest journey begins with the first step.
7. Listen to Your Intuition
Sometimes even a thorough analysis is not able to say why you refused the transaction or chose another partner. But a successful person is used to trusting his “sixth sense”. Therefore, it is worth listening to the inner voice and trying to develop these abilities.
Therefore, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of meditation and intuition for making important decisions. A large number of famous people and businessmen, not only after major transactions, the launch of new projects but in everyday life, always act following personal feelings. They know that within us there are already answers to all questions, you just need to ask and be ready to receive information.
Meditation is the surest path to a pure mind, getting rid of emotional trash and awareness. By practicing meditation, successful people clear the way for intuition, which is nothing more than a door to all knowledge in the universe.
8. Be A Master Of Thoughts And Habits
Habits and thoughts are what create a person’s lifestyle, and they need a very competent approach. Therefore, this situation has two options – you can manage habits or obey them. Successful people and businessmen cultivate good habits and the right thoughts, and each of them has their list.
They think about success and wealth, are set for a positive outcome in any situation, they are constantly engaged in self-development, pay the necessary attention to their health and personal life, etc. Surely each of them will say that this was not always the case, but only a conscious choice of thoughts and habits and efforts in this direction allowed them to create the lifestyle they aspired to.
9. Visualization of Success
Even athletic trainers say that after training it’s useful to look in the mirror and imagine which muscles are bigger and stronger. A similar situation concerns success in life. Visualization is very effective and at the same time simple method of bringing the right events, people, and circumstances into your life. However, to achieve high results, the visualization should become a habit.
That is why prosperous people prefer to create reminders that do not let them forget about big plans. Most often, this is a visualization board or a map of goals, looking at which a person always remembers his focus. Try it and you create your reminder of the plans. It may be some item on the desk (for example, a book) or even your morning ritual of success can remind you of how today will bring you closer to your dream.
10. Keep a Personal Journal
It is said that Mendeleev saw a table of chemical elements in a dream. There are many such examples. An ingenious decision can come at any second. Therefore, it is important to have a notebook and pen next to it in case of such moments.
Besides, no successful person will begin to think about a new project, negotiate or plan for the future without having prepared a sheet of paper and a pen in advance. This is because only recorded thoughts and ideas gain strength, form, and the necessary potential for implementation. You’ve probably heard of people who even wake up at night, stop the car or get out of the shower to record a good idea that came to mind.
These people understand the value of thoughts and ideas, and also know that a good idea can just as easily disappear and then not return. All inventions of the modern world were at first thought. Start recording your own, and who knows what discoveries this will lead you to.
 11. Don’t Be Afraid of Criticisms
Typically, criticism is associated with conflict and confrontation. But successful people always benefit from criticism. They are always ready for dialogue and receiving feedback – albeit not always positive, as the only way to make changes to the chosen development strategies and improve.
No wonder Aristotle said: “To avoid criticism, do not say anything, do nothing, and be nobody.” Also, one of the important qualities of successful people is not only to gratefully accept and respond to constructive criticism but also to easily forget about destructive criticism, which does not bring any benefit.
12. Find a Good Mentor
You are well aware that the environment forms a person. However, most people do not notice how their environment appears on its own and does not always have the best effect. Thriving people do not make such a mistake and carefully choose those who surround them. The vast majority of successful people have had mentors. They do not hesitate to ask questions, ask for help and support, learn from those who have already achieved success in business.
Start and surround yourself with people who strive for goals like yours, as well as those who have already achieved success in business and areas that inspire and attract you. Very soon you will see how this will help you transfer your life to a higher quality level.
13. Do Not Forget to Take a Break
Of course, work is an important component of success. But without rest, your body will quickly give up. A depleted organism is more prone to stress, negative thoughts, and much closer to failure. Therefore, it is important to relax. Try to sleep 6-7 hours a day and create the most comfortable atmosphere in the bedroom. Moreover, the rest can be not only in the bedroom.
For example, popular computer games (in particular, strategies) will help you develop useful skills, improve your reaction, and improve mental abilities.
14. Compete Only with Yourself
The easiest way to lose time is to compare yourself with others. You think: “They do everything much better than me,” “Why is his company more successful than mine,” “What am I doing wrong? Why is he in front of me? ” Such negative thinking causes damage and ultimately leads to death. It is much more effective if you spend time competing with yourself.
Of course, you need to evaluate competition in business, but constantly comparing your successes with others is not useful in any case. Analyze your results and compare what and how you are doing now, with how you did it before.
15. It’s Never Late to Learn New Things
Another interesting wisdom: “Live and learn.” This means that until the end of our days we should try to get new information and knowledge. For example, before starting the SpaceX project, Elon Musk read and studied so much literature about rocket technology and power plants that he could well build a rocket. It would seem, why would he? After all, he has already built successful companies – PayPal and Tesla. But he wanted more and realized that if he wanted to become a competent leader in the space industry company, he would have to gain new knowledge.
In this regard, I like such quality in people as the recognition of their ignorance. Usually people try to pretend that they know a lot, and they are confident in themselves, even if it is not. However, if you admit to yourself and others that you don’t know something, you have the opportunity to learn this.
Make a habit of constantly improving and learning. Take an hour every day to read a book, learn about something new. Just do not get stuck in the status of “eternal student.” It’s not enough just to read and receive knowledge. You need not be afraid to test them in practice and draw conclusions by analyzing negative experiences. We already wrote about this earlier.
16. Keep Moving Forward
Are you told that your idea will fail or that you will not succeed? Wait upset. All great people have been told at least once that nothing will work out for them. Today it seems that the success of Bill Gates was inevitable, however, at the beginning of the journey, everyone around him was sure of his failure. Walt Disney was fired from the newspaper for a “lack of imagination.” Sigmund Freud was booed by his colleagues when he presented them with his theories. If you want to become an outstanding person, you need to develop immunity to skepticism. Even experts are wrong, remember this.
Conclusion
Of course, there is no specific recipe for how to become a successful person and create the perfect business. But with good habits, diligence, and a little talent, even the most difficult tasks will be submitted to you.
There is such a phrase: “Genius is 1% talent and 99% sweat.”
If you are ready to work a lot, you will achieve a lot. If you expect that everything will somehow form and you are lucky, then “Even water does not flow under a lying stone.” Take control of the situation and become the master of your destiny. Work is also a habit. Good and useful habits. May luck be on your side.

One of Teslas biggest bulls just turned around and trashed the company on a private call with Wall Street
No one can say that analyst Adam Jonas of Morgan Stanley has not been a true believer in Tesla. For years he has been one of the company’s biggest cheerleaders, an Evangelist for its technology and a supporter of Elon Musk’s vision for the auto industry.
But on private a call with Wall Street clients on Wednesday, Jonas sounded like there was little hope that the company would go back to being the growth story he loved any time soon. Business Insider obtained a copy of the call.
Jonas kicked off the call by telling a tale of two companies — one company investors saw at the end of Q4 2018, and another they’re seeing now. In Q4 2018, Tesla demand was exceeding supply, cash flow was strong, and “by our lens,” said Jonas, “there was excitement around the Model Y.”
Now everything has changed. Here’s how Jonas put it.
“Today supply exceeds demand, they’re burning cash, nobody cares about the Model Y, the company raised capital near lows, no strategic buy-in… There could have been a strategic involvement in the capital raise — someone to fill the board to provide some know-how…”
But there wasn’t, Jonas bemoaned. And now Tesla is not a growth story, “it’s a distressed credit story.”
The problem, at its most basic level, is debt. Jonas still believes that Tesla’s technology is second to none. For example, he told listeners that he’s been all over the world talking to people about the company’s autonomous driving technology, for example, and experts say it’s incredible.
“Does it mean the company is worth more than its debt? No,” he said.
After the first quarter, Tesla is holding about $13 billion in gross debt $18 billion in net debt, according to Jonas’ calculations. That’s fine when you’re growing, it’s death when you’re not. Jonas thinks it’s possible that Tesla could deliver around just 70,000 cars in Q2, putting it on track to sell 250,000 for the year — 100,000 cars lower than the company has projected.
That would send Tesla on a road to perdition, Jonas explained. And by 2020 the company would need a massive infusion of capital or “to be seeking strategic alternatives for the company.”
The market knows this already. For one thing, prices to insure Tesla’s debt are at an all-time high. For another, Morgan Stanley’s industrials specialist Mark van der Pluym was also on the call, and he said that over the last week, 3/4ths of the Tesla’s stock he’s sold has been to short sellers.
“It’s the first time I can remember sentiment in Tesla matches with broader sentiment in the auto sector,” said van der Pluym.
The questions that followed Jonas’ dirge were all about what could possibly come to Tesla’s rescue.
Could Tesla advertise to save itself? Jonas responded that the company already had great brand recognition and that advertising would be “a disturbing development.”
What about selling electric vehicle credits to other automakers? Jonas thinks that will only bring in around $100 million a quarter.
What about lowering prices to save the company? No those levers have been pulled, Jonas said.
What about leasing? Jonas responded by asking where Tesla would find the third party financial partner willing to gamble on the company’s lack of information about the residual value of its cars.
Model S and X refresh? Would that help? “We’re not going to be having this call in December saying the S/X refresh really saved demand this year,” Jonas said “It’s gotta be on the Model 3. That’s the emphasis.” Plus, he said that the refresh would only change what would be a 50% decline in S/X sales to a 30% decline.
What if Tesla could be purchased by another tech firm, like Apple? Jonas doesn’t see that happening either. He doesn’t think the firms want to take the risk of buying an automaker where the cars sometimes burst into flames. ‘Perhaps these big tech firms don’t want to expose themselves to that up front… and they realize the autonomous race is more like a marathon.”
What about the new China factory? “Could there be a worse time for China to be selling robot cars,” Jonas asked. He also noted that — trade tensions between the US and China aside — the Chinese car market is in dire straights right now. It would take a gargantuan effort to surmount these obstacles and “we don’t think investors are willing to pay for that right now,” Jonas said.
Jonas made it clear that this story is about the debt now. If someone could get a hold of Telsa’s assets, cut the company’s headcount, and get rid of the debt. “There’s tremendous value there,” he said.
But that doesn’t help in a world that, Jonas now worries, just isn’t ready for EV’s.
“Maybe retail consumers aren’t ready to get into the segment the way Elon thought they were.”
Tesla did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

If You’re Looking for Alternatives to Root Canal, Start Here
Has your dentist told you that you need a root canal? Before deciding what’s right for you, it’s important to know that you do have choices. Alternatives to root canal do exist, and they may be a better fit for you. Part of achieving optimal health is being proactive in your own health plan, and to do so requires knowledge of all your options.
In this article:
What is a root canal?
What does root canal therapy treat?
What are the potential downsides of a root canal?
What are the alternatives to root canal?
What should I do if I’ve already had a root canal?
What is a root canal?
A root canal is better termed a root filling. In the center of the tooth there is a space in your tooth where the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside) exists. It contains blood vessels and nerves. When that pulp dies from a deep cavity or trauma to the tooth, the pulp is removed and the root is filled with a rubber-like material.  What we colloquially refer to as a “root canal” is simply root canal therapy, a type of endodontic treatment.
During the root canal procedure, the endodontist (root canal specialist) will use very small files to remove the pulp, clean the now-empty canal area with a disinfectant-like bleach, and seal the space with a rubber-like filling. The tooth is now weak and vulnerable. In order to strengthen the tooth, a crown (artificial tooth covering) is made to go over the tooth. This leaves a dead tooth in the jawbone, covered with a crown. The whole process typically happens over two or more hour-long visits.
Alternatives to root canal do exist, and they may be a better fit for you.
What does root canal therapy treat?
Dentists may recommend a root canal for inflammation or infection in the nerve area, the innermost layer of the tooth, which can occur when severe tooth decay has reached the pulp or an oral injury has exposed the pulp. Untreated inflammation can lead to the tooth dying and a cyst or abscess forming at the side or end of the root. This abcess is a pus-filled pocket that develops due to infection.
The idea behind root canal treatment is to “save” the tooth from having to be extracted, but this procedure can set you up for more problems than it solves.
What are the potential downsides of a root canal?
While a root canal may relieve you of pain and infection, there are several downsides to consider.
Root canals can fail. Unfortunately, it is not possible to fully remove all of the nerve tissue from the canal. There is an average of three miles of microscopic tubules (canals) within a single tooth, and we do not have the capacity to fully clean all the pathways, even in the most well-done root canal procedure. Remnant bacteria can live in the tubules’ anaerobic environment and cause further inflammation and infection as your immune system continues to fight it off. I lived this situation, and ultimately had my root canal teeth pulled.
The crown you receive at the end of the procedure is will need maintenance. The average crown lasts about 10 years. And if there is a metal core under that crown, it continually attracts bacteria to the tooth during those years.
If there is an infection present (rather than a tooth injury), antibiotics may be prescribed post-treatment to reduce remnant bacteria and inflammation, but there is little evidence that this is effective. It’s possible that this is due to the lack of blood supply within the tooth, making it difficult for the antibiotics to reach the place where the bacteria is still located. Antibiotics affect gut flora by wiping out all bacteria, rather than targeting bad bacteria only, and thus should only be taken (and balanced with probiotics) when absolutely necessary.
Root canals may exacerbate symptoms of chronic and degenerative diseases, according to Dr. George Meinig, one of the founders of the American Association of Endodontists and author of Root Canal Cover-Up .
What are the alternatives to root canal?
Extraction is one of the alternatives to root canal.
Extraction
Rather than keep a dead tooth in the mouth, even if it still functions, many people opt for extraction to get rid of it completely. There are several possibilities for closing the gap, including:
Partial dentures which are removable and can replace one or more teeth
A bridge, which consists of a false tooth connected on both sides by crowns to keep it in place
A dental implant made of strong, biocompatible materials like zirconia affixed to the jawbone. Well-cared-for implants can cost less over a lifetime as there is not a need for further treatment, whereas a root canal will most likely lead to the need for more treatment in the future.
Treatments to Buy Time
A dentist can inject ozone gas near the end of the root of the tooth to reduce bacteria in the area. This procedure won’t eliminate all the bacteria, and may have to be repeated often, but it may help reduce inflammation for a period of time.
If the tooth is already dead, the root canal area can be filled with calcium hydroxide as a temporary filling material, which will also keep the bacteria at bay for a period of time. Neither treatment is permanent, but may buy you some time.
What should I do if I’ve already had a root canal treatment?
Everybody’s situation is different, so make sure to consult with your biological dentist on the best next steps for your body (in my case when my root canal teeth failed, I ended up having them pulled). There are, however, some guidelines to follow to avoid any future issues:
Follow an anti-inflammatory diet.
A whole-foods diet with a variety of plants is a great way to lower inflammation. Remove processed foods and reduce sugar intake as much as possible, and for those who are particularly sensitive, also remove gluten, dairy, and nightshades like tomatoes, peppers, goji berries, potatoes, paprika, and eggplant for a period of time to see if symptoms subside.
Eat antimicrobial foods.
Although we can’t fully eliminate all the bacteria that remains in the root canal, it doesn’t hurt to incorporate more foods in your diet that have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, such as clove, garlic, orange, coconut oil, and basil.
Oil pulling with coconut oil helps attract and pull bacteria out of the tooth.
Oil pull with coconut oil.
As coconut oil is antimicrobial, it helps attract and pull bacteria out of the mouth (more on how oil pulling works here). Swish up to 1 tablespoon of the oil in your mouth and through your teeth for at least five minutes each morning (and spit in the trash, as coconut oil becomes solid at room temperature and can clog your pipes).
Keep stress levels low.
Chronically high cortisol can cause a number of health issues, namely chronic inflammation. Ensure you have restful sleep each night, enjoy movement throughout the day, and practice self-care like meditation and other calming activities to help keep stress levels down.
Manage gut health.
70% of the immune system is located in the gut, thus poor gut health can negatively affect immune response (among many other body systems). Incorporate gut-friendly probiotic foods into your daily diet (such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and kombucha) and get adequate hydration for proper production of stomach acid, which helps digestion.
***
How you deal with an affected tooth is ultimately your decision, but know that there are alternatives to root canal therapy. If your dentist has recommended this procedure, you may want to consult with a holistic health practitioner as well to get a better handle on all the options available and make an informed decision. How does an Insurance Claim work?
How does an insurance claim work. Let's say I get up one morning walk outside and my car has been stolen? The police come out and take a report, then they leave. How long would it take insurance cover this and how much would they cover? For example, if I have a car that I'm financing that is worth $24,500.00 dollars that had full insurance coverage. Basically, how does it work? Since it's being financed, I'm sure the insurance company would pay out the remaining balanced owed on the car to satisfy the loan with the finance company but what happens to me afterwards? Lets say I have $100,000 dollars in coverage that covers me in case of theft or something like that. Being that the car was fully covered and insurance was able to pay back the loan, would they give me the money to buy a new car at equal or face value of the car that was stolen? Insurance is so friggin complicated...if someone could explain the process to me I'd appreciate it.""

Totaled a Financed car Liability Insurance!?
Okay December 22 2012 I went to Eldorado Motor to Finance a nice car! I'm 18 had no credit but I held a job since I was 16! Anyways I got Approved! I picked out a Red 2001 Ford Focus! Its was 7, 000 butt after everything was said and done it all added up to like 10, 000! Anyways when I got the car I didn't know they wouldn't let me leave with the car unless I had insurance! So after I gave the $500 Down payment! They was like alright all we need is proof of insurance & sign some paper work and its mine! Well I only had like 600 bucks and 100 left after I gave the down payment...I told them I wouldn't be able to get insurance until next payday cause I was broke! They worked with me and said how much will it cost you for insurance? I told them it depends on if I needed Liability or full coverage! They said all you need is liability! I was in shook! I clarified like twice if I could get Liability? They said yes! So I called State Farm got a 220 quote and Eldorado Motor dropped my down payment to 300 and refunded me 200 So II paid for insurance! And was rolling! Butt I do remember asking what happens if I wreak? They told me they had a repair shop and all I would have to do is pay a 200 dollar deductible! And they would repair it and just tack the rest of the repairs on my car note! So fast forward like 4 months its April 12 2013 I was in a hurry Tailgating a Truck and finally this ttuck in front of me swerved into the next lane! I thought the Truck was getting outta my way so I could go ahead of him turms out he swerved around a turning car! And I couldn't stop in time and I rear ended the car turning!!! So the Truck drives off and I got out checked on everybody no one was hurt! But my car and the guy I hit the cars was Totaled I could tell by just looking at it! Anyways my Liability insurance covered the guy I hit but not me!!! So I called Eldorado Motor and told them everything now i've been without a car 4 a week and don't know what the car lot wants to do""
