Mental Health in Media Blog #2

In this assignment, we watched five films that showed the way a mental illness can affect the way a person lives their life. The characters in these films portray many different types of mental illness and the different ways of copping. In media mental illness has been a topic that is experiencing more and more attention as it has become an important topic in the everyday lives of people across the world. In the film “Black Swan” the main character Nina is experiencing a Psychological break in which she can not differentiate reality from imagination. She obsesses over perfecting her dance to a point of insanity. In the amazing film “Parasite” the watcher follows the Kim family sneak their way into the lives of the Parks, learning all of the secrets and past of the home. I enjoyed the endings of both of these films as they allow the watcher to interpret them how they see them.

In the film “Black Swan” we are getting a first-hand look at Nina going through her psychotic break. Throughout the film, the watcher is unable to know which scenes have actually occurred due to her skewed look at reality. In her final break, she is told she will not be able to dance by her mother. She becomes enraged and demands that she dance. All the while she is suffering from hallucinations and believes that she has gotten into a physical altercation with Lily. she believes that she has stabbed her fellow dancer and stuffs her in the bathroom to finish her dance. She performs beautifully and I believe that this heinous act gave her the power of the Black Swan and allowed her to dance better than she has ever done in the past. After performing and going back to her dressing room she realizes that she did not stab Lily but rather she had stabbed herself in the stomach. She then was able to realize that she was her own worst enemy and caused the majority of her own pain. Realizing that this would be her last dance and she would suffer the same as the white swan, she goes out and performs. Nina danced the piece beautifully but when she jumps off the “cliff” she begins to bleed out. Thomas comes over and confronts the injury and calls her his little princess as he once called Beth. In the end, Nina says, “I felt it. Perfect. I was Perfect,” then it goes dark allowing the water to believe that she had passed away. At the end of the film, I believe that Nina was living out the story of Swan Lake. I believe that when Nina smashed the mirror in her dressing room it symbolized her freedom. Every time she looked in the mirror she saw a dark version of herself and now that the mirror was broken she did not have to see this dark part of herself. Although in the end, Nina needed this darkness in order for her performance to be perfect just like she wanted. I liked the ending of this film because it really showed how perfection is a disease and it can push people off the edge and hurt their mental health. In every story, I root for the main character and want them to succeed in their story. I, of course, did not want Nina to die but I think it helps the story become more intense and emphasizes the problem with mental health, and connects it with media.

In the film, “Parasite” the end shows the watcher that hope is a very dangerous parasite for people. The Kim family is seen as a parasite to the Park family. They snuck their ways into their lives one by one working hard to keep this a secret. I believe that this ending is kind of open to the interpretation of the viewer. In the end, the Kim family was only Ki-woo and Mun-Kwang left because Ki-Jung has passed away and Ki-taek had disappeared. Ki-woo would sit at the mountainside and watch the old Park family house and imagine living in it. He watches as life there continues even after the Park family moves away. He quickly realizes that his father has been hiding out in the secret bunker under the home. There will always be another rich family to live in the luxurious mansion while another poor family to live in a position beneath them. The end is narrated by Ki-woo writing a letter saying that he has a plan to go to college and get a job and make a lot more money. He will make so much money he will buy the house and all he will have to do is walk up the stairs into his own home. In this case, Ki-woo is delusional, unfortunately. He is way out of touch with reality and unable to realize that he will probably never have enough money to own that home even if he goes to school. Hope he is a parasite because he has such a need for success and comfort financially he would try anything. His emotions creep up on him and will suck him dry just like a parasite. At the end of this film, we see Ki-taek living out the rest of his life in the basement of the mansion because he is a wanted man. But we also see the rest of the Kim family back in their old home suck in their economic problems. This shows how hard it is in many places for economic and social mobility. Looking at the movie from a different point of view of the Park family being the parasite. They are parasites who take from the lower class and give little to nothing back. They do not concern themselves to think about the lives of the lower class. For example when the rain flooded the slums and lower class people were forced to pile into a gym and sleep on the floors the Parks were planning an extravagant party. I believe that this film shows the differences between the upper and lower classes and how they are very different from each other. Again I want the main characters to succeed like the Kim family but i believe the twist ending gives it a more believable and interesting film.

These two films are very different from each other but both show the lives of people who are struggling with their identities. Both of the endings to the films have the ability for the watchers to interpreted it. The “Black Swan” allows us to see how Nina is thinking and feeling. The end shows that perfect is dangerous and needing it drove her over the edge. “Parasite” shows us that wanting something you can not have can form an obsession and it can end deadly. I was satisfied with both of the ends I think that it tied the films altogether and gave it an ending you can not forget.

⍔ The daughter of an Atlantean man and a surface woman, Aquaria Neptunia was nicknamed “Namora” in honor of her cousin Namor. Born in Maritanis, she later emigrated to Lemuria after Maritanis was destroyed by nuclear weapons. During her early adolescence, Namora moved to the Atlantis Antarctic capital with her father. When she was initially introduced to Namor, the youthful prince of Atlantis did not have any interest in hanging out with a girl. Forced by his mother Princess Fen, Namor took Namora out with him to play with his cousin Byrrah and his friend Meranno. When exploring a sunken submarine, Namor found himself caught in a torpedo tube, and learned a lesson in humility when Namora proved to be the only one with the strength to free him. Thereafter, Namora earned Namor’s respect and the two spent much of their early adolescence together. Sometime later, Namora joined Namor and Byrrah on a trip to the surface where they explored the abandoned Antarctic town of “Little America”. While exploring one of the cabins, Namora accidentally knocked over a can of kerosene causing a massive fire that threatened to burn her alive. Luckily, Namor rescued her using his unrealized strength. However, soon afterword, Namora and her father left Atlantis again.

⍔ Namora was one of several heroes active during the Golden Age of comics who later reappeared in the Modern Age. During the Golden Age she had her own 3 issue mini-series in 1948, and many guest appearances in other titles, especially Sub-Mariner, up until 1955.

⍔ Namora made her permanent return for real in the Agents of Atlas mini-series in 2006, in a story inspired by the alternate reality story in What If? (1977) #9. She continued as a member of the Agents of Atlas team in its successive restarts, and was later ret-conned to have participated in an early form of the Avengers.

⍔ It is no secret that Namora has always had feelings for Namor, despite the fact they’re cousins. She admitted that she harbored feelings for him around the time of her marriage. She has also shown feelings for Hercules during the times they have spent together, though she was unwilling to take his feelings seriously due to his bragging about being with various other women. It was recently revealed in Fear Itself - The Home front, that she has been in a relationship with Jimmy Woo for an unspecified period of time. This fact is unknown to the rest of the Agents of Atlas.

⍔ Powers:

➞Namora is biologically half Atlantean and half human with a mutant X-Gene. With that, she all the natural abilities of both, though due to her hybrid/mutant nature many of her natural abilities are far greater then any average Atlantean or human. As an Atlantean she has numerous super attributes including:

➞Limited Invulnerability: Highly durable-skin extremely tough. Withstands bullets, missiles and deep sea pressures with ease

➞Sub-mariner: Namora’s Atlantean heritage grants her multiple underwater super attributes. She can Swim at incredible speeds, immune to cold and pressures of the deep seas, able to see clearly in water whether murky or not & her strengths and health are naturally replenished in water. However on land it isn’t at his best.

➞Longevity: Namora ages at a far slower rate than most due to her Atlantean nature. Already over half a century old, Namora’s appearance still resembles(mirrors) a woman in her twenties..

➞Enhanced Physical Attributes: Namora’s speed, reflexes,strength and endurance are greatly enhanced especially when underwater. Her skin is unable to be penetrated by bullets; for her skin is extremely strong(tough)

➞Flight: Namora is able to fly through use of small wings below her ankles. These are naturally grown and normal to Atlanteans.

➞Telepathy:Namora has shown multiple instances that demonstrate a telepathic ability to communicate with whales. It remains to be seen if this applies to all marine life.

⍔ Abilities:

➞Namora is trained in Atlantean combat methods and is primarily a unarmed combatant. Namora is also fluent in Atlantean. Lemurian and English languages.

⍔ Limitations:

➞Though she is able to live indefinitely on either land or in water, her Atlantean linage still requires water. The longer she is out of water the weaker she becomes. She must submerse herself in water periodically to retain and recharge her powers.

03. Are there any particular aus or plots that you’d really like to write?

Hmmmm there’s an AU/Verse idea I’ve been toying with for a bit. For some reason I really want a Vampyr verse for Rafe and just have interactions between him and McCullum just seem like a “fun” time.

I also would love a thread with Elena, just for fun. I’d love for her and Rafe to interact.

Oh and of course, some angsty post-canon Sam & Rafe in one of my “rafe lives” verses. owo

05. What is the most difficult thing about writing your current muse?

Being able to keep him as a 3 dimentional character. With a muse like Rafe, or villains in general, I think it’s easier to just make them full batshit crazy/evil. While that is fun to do depending on the verse, Rafe’s not always like that. He does have feelings. And juggling with his feelings is hard sometimes. Like how much can I do before it starts to look too out of character?

But if i’m being honest, the most difficult part about writing him is that he’s a canon muse and i’m constantly second guessing myself if i’m doing him justice. My previous muse was the complete opposite of him, an OC and a total ray of sunshine. ngl tho, i am having more fun with Rafe than i ever did with my oc

12. Have you roleplayed anywhere other than tumblr?

Yes! I have RPed through WhatsApp with a group of friends. Just a bunch of fantasy-themed OCs, nothing too serious, it was just a pass-time in college that worked as a prequel for our tabletop rpg campaign!

08. Name any three things about the rpc that bother you.

1. Way too much formatting. Now don’t get me wrong, everyone is allowed to format their threads as they want and all but sometimes it’s just to much. Sometimes I can’t even read the text bc its so tiny or have a color too similar to their blog bg.

2. People who tell others how to portray their muse/muses. Criticism is fine sometimes but some people need to chill. If you don’t like the way someone portray that muse, find another rp partner with that muse thats more to your liking instead of trying to making them to change.

3. Some RPers/RP advice blogs make RP sound like a job instead of a hobby. Please, let people have FUN ffs

09. What is your opinion on exclusivity? Do you practice it? Why / why not?

I don’t have strong opinions on this, anyone can do whatever they want. But I do practice it to an extent. There’s no bigger reason than to keep my draft count low so I don’t get too anxious.

However I do take shipping exclusivity a little bit more serious than muse/non-shipping exclusivity. If I’m shipping my muse with yours, I won’t be doing a shipping thread with somebody else.

16. If you could change one thing about rp on tumblr, what would it be? Why?

Less drama and discourse. LESS CALLOUT CULTURE. Man, I can’t stress enough how much it annoys me. I know it isn’t exactly something exclusive to the rpc, but its where I see it the most. Let people ship whatever they want. If you don’t like, just block the tags or look away idk. It’s fiction. Pointing fingers always sounds just so whiny. Please solve your issues in private without making a goddamn scene.

34. Have you ever cried while writing a reply?

Unless you count panic crying, not yet. But I feel this answer may change in the future dkfljgdçkd
