#Washington’s Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation

Little trivia I learned today:
The quote: “It is better to be alone, than to be in bad company”
though attributed to George Washington, is actually from the 110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation, from which Washington copied it aged 14 as a penmanship exercise. These rules are based on a set of rules made up by French Jesuits in 1595, translated to English in 1640.

"In the presence of others sing not to yourself with a humming noise, nor drum with your fingers or feet"
George Washington wrote this when he was thirteen.
But he apparently gave a fuck about it in his later life because he had a habit of drumming with his fork and knife.
SOOO... I just leave this little fact here....

In honor of the Fourth of July holiday, let’s consider some timeless words from our first president. When he was only a schoolboy, George Washington transcribed the unforgettable “110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation.”
Below are some of the rules most meaningful to me.

#Repost @colonialwmsburg ・・・ Before age 16, George Washington transcribed by hand a book of precepts called "Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation." Offering advice on everything from personal conduct to eating in public, Washington took the text's 110 axioms to heart--and historians identify it as an important factor in his early development. . Although written hundreds of years ago, the advice still rings true. Want a free copy?
