I do ever so much love horses!
This is of course entirely unrelated to the current project being done, I just wanted to leave you with something pleasant before I went silent for a few days to focus on tests.
Horses may just be a favorite animal of mine, they are quite wonderful! Though my most darling wish would be for centaurs to actually exist.

How to Find Your Dream Job: Career Research Guide
Finding a job, especially your dream job, is hard. Even if you have a few ideas of what you’re interested in, how do you choose what to pursue? Do you have enough experience to even try at this point? Or, do you think it’s too late for a career change? Let me tell you, it’s never too early or too late to pursue your ambitions.
If you’re new to the job market or looking for change, put yourself in research mode. Go beyond a quick Google search and dive deep into the fundamentals of a job role, the types of companies in the industry, and whether the jobs match what you want from a career.
Let us walk you through the steps of how to find your dream job.
Bonus: Want to know how to make as much money as you want and live life on your terms? Download my FREE Ultimate Guide to Making Money
Key barriers to finding your dream job
Confidence and lack of knowledge are typical barriers that stop people in their tracks when searching for a job.
“I have no idea what my dream job is!” or “I don’t know how to find it; it’s simply not attainable.” Sound familiar?
It’s difficult because it’s confusing. It sounds like it would be simple but, in reality, it’s a huge decision with multiple conflicts. We are conflicted by our desires — passion vs. skill vs. show me the money. Then, there’s the conflict of worry — the worry of uncertainty, change, and failure.
For a lot of people, finding their ideal job indefinitely remains on the back-burner. There’s no real sense of urgency, partly because people are hesitant, confused, or fearful of where to start. People are so scared of getting it wrong that they don’t put the work in to get it right. On top of all these uncertainties and confusion, there’s also the fact that a lot of career advice out there is terrible and leaves you more confused than ever.
Barrier 1: You’re not getting specific
Researching any old job is a good start but to really dig deep into the different roles out there, you need to get specific.
The chances are you already have a few vague ideas of what type of roles sound interesting to you but you may not necessarily know the ins and outs. To get specific with your research, take one of your job ideas, and start with an overarching view of what the role entails.
This can be as basic as typing in a search term like ‘introduction to [job role].’ Once you have a basic understanding of what the job is, your work isn’t done. This is just the beginning, my friend. It’s time to get detailed. And, the only way to do that is to be specific and ask the right questions.
What is the workload in an average week vs. a busy week? Is there any continuing education or progression? What are the salaries like? What types of companies have this role? And so on.
Be specific in your research to get specific results.
Commit to defining exactly what you want
Conventional career-hunting advice is to send your resume to every job opportunity you see — and that might actually make sense if you’d be happy taking any job. But that’s not your goal. Your goal is to get up in the morning eager to clock-in and do your thing.
To find your dream job you’ll need to get specific:
What job do you want? Name it. Have the courage to exclude the ones you don’t.
What size company? Where is it located? Be grittily granular.
… And here’s the really important one …
What kinds of skills and experience do you need to land it? Quantify how you get there.
Everything in your resume and pitch should be hyper-focused on the answers you give to these questions. If you can do that, two things happen. First, you save time by no longer applying for dodgy jobs you don’t want anyway. Second, you make yourself look like a better employment prospect to the companies that actually count.
Get specific in 15 minutes or less
Here are a couple of things you can do right now to get specific:
Grab a sheet of paper and split it into 2 columns. In the first column list everything you know about what your dream job looks like. In column 2, bullet out the key characteristics of the kinds of jobs you don’t want. Stick this paper somewhere prominent as a daily reminder.
Grab a red pen (OK purple will do if red ink is scary). Go through every line of your current resume and scratch out generic, hedging, or vague statements. If it isn’t about the job you actually want, ditch it.
Congratulations. You just shifted your energy to that critical 20%.
Barrier 2: Self-sabotage
This might sound a bit “Dr. Phil” at first glance, but hear us out. We’re not suggesting something quite so asinine and patronizing as the idea that great self-esteem and chutzpah is all you need to land you a dream job. That’s dumb. Also, see point 1.
What we are saying though is that many job-seekers accidentally absorb a defeatist mindset. In fact, it happens to the best of us. Here’s the kind of self-sabotaging thoughts we’re talking about:
“I’m not qualified. Before I can even think about a new job I need to go back to school.”
“I’m lucky to have any job in this economy.”
“I should wait until things settle down before any big life changes.”
Don’t get us wrong. These thoughts aren’t stupid.
Skilling up is good! And of course, macroeconomics and other unpredictable variables are all real things that affect how your dream job search will play out. But none of these considerations (along with the myriad other excuses out there) need stop you from taking meaningful steps in the right direction … right now.
These ideas all have one thing in common. They push you to reflect on all the reasons why now isn’t a good time; why you’re not ready yet; why the world is just too scary a place to do something bold and daring like pursuing your dream.
Barrier 3: Passivity
This all circles around to the absolute importance of kicking passivity to the curb.
Think back to the 80/20 Rule for a moment: The idea that most of the biggest changes that’ll happen in your life boil down to a relatively slim sliver of critical crux points.
If you buy into this particular quirk of the universe, being awake for those moments suddenly becomes vitally important, right?
Yet the vast majority of people that are searching for their dream job hand the responsibility for delivering those all-or-nothing flash-points to someone else. Career-hunting passivity is everywhere, and takes many forms, like:
Trusting a job search algorithm to guide your job search.
Sending out a resume and desperately hoping the HR team gets back to you one day.
Relying on a recruiter to convince your dream company to give you a shot.
Laziness of this ilk squanders not one, but two of your most valuable resources.
One: Obviously, you’re wasting your time. We probably don’t need to offer too much exposition here on why metaphorically cramming filet mignon into a Mcdonald’s meat-grinder is unlikely to produce optimal results.
But you can’t overlook the negative knock-on effects on your motivation. You’re spinning headlong into a negative spiral here — where a perfect storm of rejection emails, lack of actionable data, and no real clue about what to do differently next time robs you of any desire to continue.
Why do this to yourself?
Passivity breeds failure, which in turn leads to the slow and abysmal process of … well … just giving up. The “80-percenter-zone” is a gray realm of mental laziness — of endlessly doing the same thing while expecting suddenly different results to miraculously manifest from miasmic mundanity. No.
How to find your dream job
Now that you’ve identified and sidestepped the common barriers to finding your dream job, here’s how to actually land the role you want.
1. Identify what’s important to you in a dream career
It’s not all about the job role itself. It’s about you. Be selfish. Yeah, focus on your skills and experience, but also, go beyond that. List what’s important to you in a career — personally and professionally. Dig deep.
People look for different things in a job. Some look for career progression or high salaries. Others look for ways to use their creativity, and some prioritize work/life balance. Knowing what is most important to you and figuring out your career values is key to finding your ultimate landing place.
Sure you can take an online personality test, but those can be vague and misguided. This self-discovery has to come from you personally. What type of working environment do you thrive in? Do you hate office politics, big competitive teams, or long hours? Perhaps you prefer to work independently, or you’re more of a team player.
All of these career values and expectations from a role/company need to be factored into your research. It could be that the idea of a job sounds interesting, but other aspects of working in those types of companies don’t appeal to you. There’s nothing wrong with that. This exercise is to rule out roles just as much as it is to find the right one.
Bonus: Want to finally start getting paid what you’re worth? I show you exactly how in my Ultimate Guide to Getting a Raise and Boosting Your Salary
The key to finding your end-goal career is good research. This goes beyond personality tests and snapshot career summaries on job sites.
2. Choose three job roles
Now, write down a list of potential jobs you think you might be interested in. We call this the Cloud Technique. Write down any career or job title you’ve been interested in, even if it just pops into your head. Then, head over to LinkedIn and other job sites to take a look through job descriptions. If anything jumps out, write that idea down too. Also, think about the skills you already have and search for careers that fit them. Are you creative? Google something like ‘best careers for creatives.’
Once you have your ideas listed, choose the most appealing few, and move to Step two.
3. Research each role
The next step is to spend quality time with your new potential job roles. Aim for at least an hour of solid research on each job title you have selected. In that hour, learn and absorb everything you can about the role. This is where you will want to find answers to those specific questions you had earlier.
What is the day-to-day of the job?
What is the career path?
Do you need qualifications?
What’s the average salary?
What is the company culture for typical roles like this?
The more specific you can be with these questions, the better. Find out more information beyond the snapshot introductions to a role. It’s good to learn both the positives and negatives ahead of time. At some point in your research, you may realize that a specific job is 100% not for you. Walk away and move on to the next idea.
After this exercise, decide whether you would love these jobs and whether you can get these jobs.
4. Prioritize your job titles
If you have three job roles you are still interested in working towards, prioritize them. By this point in your research, you should have a better understanding of which of the three you are most interested in and why. Keep in mind, we’re just brainstorming for now. Don’t worry if one of these doesn’t end up being the winning dream career.
Think carefully about how you prioritize the list. Is it by salary, average working hours, the day-to-day of the role? This will teach you more about what you value the most if you don’t already know.
5. Naturally network
This is where the real work of finding your dream job begins. It’s time to break out of your comfort zone and head into networking among colleagues and leaders in the industry. Find experts or business leaders in your potential field and see what they have to say. Comb websites, follow experts on YouTube, and engage with professionals on social media or with a short email. Yes, they are busy people but with the right communication skills, you could capture their attention and win them over.
This will teach you more about the job role but will also give you insight into the type of companies you could potentially work for. Notice everything — from the language that leaders in the industry use to the company’s ad campaigns.
This may sound like a lot of work. It is. But it’s worth it to find a career you feel happy and fulfilled in. Laying the groundwork now is the hard part, but having insight into and understanding different job roles and companies is invaluable to your dream career search.
Do the legwork, get the job
Many people are on the lookout for the perfect online tool, personality quiz, career advice website, or just a spark of inspiration, but the truth is, finding your dream career takes work.
Before you dive into research, take some time to understand what it is you want from a career. What are your values? In what type of working environment can you see yourself thriving?

Biden and Republicans Spar Over Unemployment as Job Gains Disappoint WASHINGTON — The disappointing jobs report released Friday by the Labor Department is posing the greatest test yet of President Biden’s strategy to revive the economy, with business groups and Republicans warning that the president’s policies are causing a labor shortage and that his broader agenda risks stoking runaway inflation. But the Biden administration showed no signs on Friday of changing course, with the president defending the more generous jobless benefits included in the $1.9 trillion bill he signed into law in March and saying the $4 trillion in spending he proposed for infrastructure, child care, education and other measures would help create more and better-paying jobs after the pandemic. Speaking at the White House, Mr. Biden urged “perspective” on the report, which showed only 266,000 new jobs added in April. He said it would take time for his aid bill to fully reinvigorate the economy and hailed the more than 1.5 million jobs added since he took office. And he rejected what he called “loose talk that Americans just don’t want to work.” “The data shows that more workers are looking for jobs,” he said, “and many can’t find them.” Republicans cast the report as a sign of failure for Mr. Biden’s policies, even though job creation has accelerated since Mr. Biden replaced President Donald J. Trump in the White House. They called on his administration to end the $300 weekly unemployment supplement, while several Republican governors — including those in Arkansas, Montana and South Carolina — moved to end the benefit for unemployed people in their states, citing worker shortages. “This is a stunning economic setback, and unequivocal proof that President Biden is sabotaging our jobs recovery with promises of higher taxes and regulation on local businesses that discourage hiring and drive jobs overseas,” Representative Kevin Brady of Texas, the top Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, said in a news release. “The White House is also in denial that many businesses — both small and large — can’t find the workers they need.” Business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which have backed pieces of Mr. Biden’s broad economic agenda, also suggested the aid was holding back hiring. The jobs report “begins to confirm that this is a barrier — not the only barrier, but a barrier to filling open positions in the recovery,” said Neil Bradley, the chamber’s executive vice president and chief policy officer. “We absolutely have to begin to make the preparation to turn the supplement off,” he said. “The sooner we do that, the sooner it’s going to become clear how this has been holding us back.” The unemployment supplement has quickly become Republicans’ preferred weapon in attacking Mr. Biden’s economic stewardship, with lawmakers and conservative economists arguing that his heavy spending is having a negative effect on the recovery and will ultimately slow growth. While Democrats command narrow majorities in Congress, Republicans are trying to turn public sentiment against Mr. Biden’s approach and to stall plans to spend $4 trillion on policies that would be offset by higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Republicans backed a $600 weekly supplement in the first stimulus bill approved under Mr. Trump, but they said the need for it no longer existed and that it was providing a disincentive to look for work. Economists who support that view pointed to details of the jobs report — including rapid wage gains in the hospitality sector — saying that suggested employers were rapidly raising pay to encourage new hires to accept jobs. White House officials disputed that reading. Heather Boushey and Jared Bernstein, members of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, both pointed to a gain of 300,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector and to a falling number of workers who told the department they had left the labor force out of concern over contracting the coronavirus as signs that the unemployment supplement was not deterring workers. Other officials noted that under the rules of unemployment benefits, workers could not turn down suitable job offers and still qualify for assistance. Asked if he believed the enhanced benefits had any effect on the job gains, Mr. Biden replied, “No, nothing measurable.” Administration officials say that any clogs in the labor market are likely to be temporary, and that the recovery will smooth out once more working-age Americans are fully vaccinated, schools and child care centers are fully open and people feel more comfortable going back to work. “This is progress,” Ms. Boushey said in an interview. “We are adding an average of over 500,000 jobs a month” over the past three months, she said. “That’s evidence that our approach is working, that the president’s approach is working,” Ms. Boushey said. “It also emphasizes the steep climb coming out of this crisis.” Administration officials expressed optimism that the pace of job gains would accelerate in the months ahead. Substantial portions of the relief money that was approved in March have yet flow into the economy. That includes the $350 billion that was allocated for states and municipalities, which have 1.3 million fewer jobs than their prepandemic peak. States and cities are awaiting guidance on exactly how the money can be spent and what strings are attached. Republican-led states have filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration over its position that states cannot use relief money to subsidize tax cuts, which could further slow the rollout. Mr. Biden said at the White House that the administration would begin releasing the first batch of money to state and local governments this month. He said the money would not restore all of the lost jobs in one month, “but you’re going to start seeing those jobs in state and local workers coming back.” The administration also took steps on Friday to get money out the door more quickly, saying the Treasury Department would release $21.6 billion of rental assistance that was included in the pandemic relief legislation to provide additional support to millions of people who could be facing eviction in the coming months. Officials said they expected increased vaccination rates to ease some lingering fears about returning to jobs in the pandemic. The number of Americans 18 to 64 who are fully vaccinated grew by 22 million from mid-April, when the survey for the jobs report was conducted, to Friday. That was an acceleration from the previous month. Some White House officials said the administration’s push to further increase the ranks of the vaccinated could be the most important policy variable for the economy this summer. Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen, speaking at the White House, said that a lack of child care related to irregular school schedules was making it a challenge to get the labor market back to full strength. She also said that health concerns about the pandemic were holding back some workers who might return to the market. “I don’t think that the addition to unemployment compensation is really the factor that’s making the difference,” Ms. Yellen said. She said that she believed the labor market was healthier than the figures released on Friday suggested, but she allowed that the economic recovery would take time. “We’ve had a very unusual hit to our economy,” Ms. Yellen said, “and the road back is going to be somewhat bumpy.” Ms. Boushey and Mr. Bernstein said that it appeared the economy was working through a variety of rapid changes related to the pandemic, including supply chain disruptions that have hurt automobile manufacturing by reducing the availability of semiconductor chips and businesses beginning to rehire after a year of depressed activity because of the virus. “It’s our view that these misalignments and bottlenecks are transitory,” Mr. Bernstein said, “and they’re what you expect from an economy going from shutdown to reopening.” Other key economic officials treated the report as a sign that the labor recovery ahead is likely to prove wildly unpredictable. Robert S. Kaplan, the president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said in an interview that his economics team had warned him that the April report might show a significant slowdown as shortages of materials — including lumber and computer chips — and labor bit into employment growth. He said he was hoping to see those supply bottlenecks cleared up, but he was watching carefully in case they did not resolve quickly. “It shows me that getting the unemployment rate down and moving forward to improved employment to population is going to have fits and starts,” Mr. Kaplan said. He noted that sectors that were struggling to acquire materials, like manufacturing, shed jobs, and he said leisure and hospitality companies would have added more positions if not for challenges in finding labor. “It’s just one jobs report,” cautioned Tom Barkin, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, in Virginia. But he said labor supply issues could be at play: Some people may have retired, others may have health concerns, and unemployment insurance could be encouraging low-paid workers to stay at home or allowing them to come back on their own terms. “I get the feeling that people are being choosy,” Mr. Barkin said. “The first question I have in my mind is — is it temporary or is it more structural?” He said that the supply constraints playing out were likely to fade over time, and that while businesses complain about rising input costs and might have to raise entry-level wages somewhat, he struggled to see that leading to much higher inflation — the kind that would worry the Fed. The Fed is trying to achieve maximum employment and stable inflation around 2 percent on average. It has pledged to keep its cheap-money policies, which make borrowing inexpensive, in place until it sees realized progress toward those goals. Neel Kashkari, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, said the payrolls disappointment vindicated the Fed’s slow-moving stance. “I feel very good about our policy approach, which is outcome-based,” Mr. Kashkari said, speaking on a Bloomberg television interview shortly after the report came out. “Let’s actually allow the labor market to recover, let’s not just forecast that it’s going to recover.” Source link Orbem News #Biden #disappoint #gains #Job #Republicans #Spar #Unemployment

Best practices for working with Amazon Aurora Serverless
Amazon Aurora Serverless is an on-demand, autoscaling configuration for Amazon Aurora, where the database automatically starts up, shuts down, and scales capacity up or down based on your application’s needs. It enables you to run your database in the cloud without provisioning or managing any database instances, so you can focus on building and innovating. Aurora Serverless is suitable for workloads that have intermittent, infrequent, or unpredictable bursts of requests. Some examples are development and test databases that are infrequently used, ecommerce applications occasionally running flash sales, or new applications you can’t predict capacity for. Arranging to have just the right amount of capacity for these workloads can be a lot of work; paying for it on a steady-state basis might not be sensible. With Aurora Serverless, you should be mindful of a few things, such as connection management and cold starts. In this post, we describe some of the important best practices for Aurora Serverless such as operational debugging tools, security, and monitoring. Connection management One key challenge for modern serverless applications is connection management. An application communicates with a database by establishing connections. Establishing such a connection consumes valuable compute and memory resources on the database server. Serverless applications can open a large number of database connections or frequently open and close connections. This can have a negative impact on the database and lead to slower performance. The capacity allocated to your Aurora Serverless DB cluster seamlessly scales up and down based on the load (the CPU utilization and the number of connections) generated by your application. By following the best practices for connection management, you can appropriately scale the database cluster, lower costs, and improve performance. You have two choices with Aurora Serverless: manage your own application connection pooling or use the Amazon RDS Data API. Application connection pooling Connection pooling is a good solution for some applications, such as long-running programs, applications that don’t need scale the application layer, and applications with steady traffic. Connection pooling reduces the number of times new connections are opened with the database. When you need a new connection, you get an already established connection from the pool. When the application closes the connection, the connection is returned to the pool instead of being closed. Connection pooling can enhance your application’s performance and scalability because it reduces the number of times new connections are created and it quickens the process of getting a connection. It also avoids unnecessarily keeping the database cluster at a higher capacity because you maintain only as many connections as you need. Lastly, connections in the pool are automatically closed if they aren’t used for a certain time. If connection pooling suits your use case, make sure you follow general best practices: Ensure appropriate timeouts and health checks Retrieve a connection from the pool as late as possible and return it as soon as possible Always close a connection, including in the event of an exception Connecting to an Amazon Serverless DB cluster A DNS scan is necessary for the custom implementation of a connection failover. However, the mariadb:aurora parameter avoids the automatic DNS scan for failover targets, thereby eliminating the scanning, which causes a delay in establishing the connection. If you use the MariaDB Connector/J utility with an Aurora Serverless cluster, use the prefix jdbc:mariadb:aurora// in your connection string. Aurora Serverless closes connections that are older than 24 hours. Make sure that your connection pool refreshes connections frequently. Data API Due to the transient nature of serverless applications, you often have more connections than in traditional applications. Because there’s no persistent server, there’s no place to store a connection identifier for reuse. Managing connections for serverless applications can be cumbersome. The Data API reduces the effort of managing database connections or connection pools. The Data API doesn’t require a persistent connection to the DB cluster. Instead, it provides a secure HTTP endpoint, backed by a connection pool. The Data API uses database credentials stored in AWS Secrets Manager so you don’t need to pass credentials in the API calls. With the Data API, you can avoid the complexity and overhead that comes with connection management. The following diagram illustrates a representative Aurora Serverless architecture using the Data API. To learn more about the Data API, see Using the Data API for Aurora Serverless. Minimum capacity Capacity in Aurora Serverless is measured in Aurora Capacity Units (ACUs). Each ACU comes with approximately 2 GB of memory, corresponding CPU, and networking. As a best practice, set the appropriate minimum capacity instead of using the default value. Aurora Serverless scales up when capacity constraints are seen in CPU or connections. However, finding a scaling point can take time (see the Scale-blocking operations section). Test your application to determine the proper minimum capacity. If you observe that your application needs more resources, set a higher minimum capacity. If you find your cluster is struggling to find a scaling point, it could be your minimum capacity is too low, and your database is too busy to pause transactions and scale. In that case, set your minimum capacity higher and re-run the test again. If there is a sudden spike in requests, you can overwhelm the database. Aurora Serverless might not be able to find a scaling point and scale quickly enough due to a shortage of resources. This is especially true when your cluster is at 1 ACU capacity, which corresponds to approximately 2 GB of memory. Typically 1 ACU is not adequate for production workloads. Minimizing pause and resume time You can choose to pause your Aurora Serverless DB cluster after a given amount of time with no activity. When the DB cluster is paused, no compute or memory activity occurs, and you’re charged only for storage. If database connections are requested when an Aurora Serverless DB cluster is paused, the DB cluster automatically resumes and services the connection requests. Some applications may require a fast resume. Resuming the cluster takes a few seconds and in some cases can be longer based on variables such as your ACU, storage size, and more. To avoid a cold start, consider disabling auto pause and, as discussed in the previous section, set the proper minimum capacity. Pre-warming You may have use cases when you know exactly when to scale up or resume the cluster, or use cases when you expect a sharp increase in load in a short period. In those cases, scaling up or waking up might not be quick enough. Instead, you can pre-warm your cluster. You can either resume your cluster by establishing a new connection through the Data API, or you can call the Amazon RDS API to modify the cluster to your needs. To run a periodic job, you can create a scheduled Amazon CloudWatch rule or use Amazon EventBridge to call AWS Lambda to do the job. For instructions, see Tutorial: Schedule AWS Lambda Functions Using CloudWatch Events and Tutorial: Schedule AWS Lambda Functions Using EventBridge, respectively. When resuming a cluster, make sure you run your load within the SecondsUntilAutoPause time frame. The following diagram illustrates this architecture. One cluster = one database In the traditional database world, it’s common to have a cluster containing multiple databases. It helps reduce maintenance and cost. That’s not true for Aurora Serverless. AWS performs maintenance and updates automatically. There’s no limit to the number of databases you can have in an Aurora Serverless cluster, but it’s a best practice to only group schemas or databases that serve similar application use cases. Splitting up unrelated databases across separate clusters reduces the blast radius of potential failures or performance issues, and scaling operations can run independently based on the unique database traffic patterns. Unlike other database engines, there is no cost benefit by consolidating multiple databases into a single cluster as long as you set the right capacity settings. Because the main cost for Aurora Serverless is per ACU (not per cluster or any license), you can also achieve cost savings in the long term. Scale-blocking operations The capacity allocated to your Aurora Serverless DB cluster seamlessly scales. But using long-running queries or transactions and temporary tables or table locks can delay finding a scaling point. Long-running queries or transactions For transactions, you should follow standard best practices. For example, keep your transactions simple, short and use a suitable isolation level. For more information, see Transactional and Locking Statements and Optimizing InnoDB Transaction Management. The most important practice is to avoid long-running transactions. In general, for any relational database, long-running transactions can cause performance degradation. Specifically for Aurora Serverless, long-running transactions are blocking operations for scaling unless you use the force scaling parameter. Even in this scenario, you must complete a proper rollback first, which can take significant time. This can have a very negative impact on your application. In any case, you should remember to properly handle rollback exceptions on your application level. For Aurora Serverless MySQL 5.6, the exception will look as follows: mysql> SELECT * FROM Customer; ERROR 1105 (HY000): The last transaction was aborted due to an unknown error. Please retry. For Aurora Serverless MySQL 5.7, the exception will look as follows: mysql> SELECT * FROM Customer; ERROR 1105 (HY000): The last transaction was aborted due to Seamless Scaling. Please retry. If your system requires long-running transactions, first narrow the scope of the transaction to a minimum by accessing the least amount of data inside the transaction body. Try breaking down the transaction into smaller sub-transactions and run them independently. For example, retrieve the data from the tables separately, if possible. A single long-running query can block scaling. A single query is implicitly a single-statement transaction, therefore they follow similar principles and best practices as mentioned previously for long-running transactions. Lastly, set proper timeouts for statements and transactions. For PostgreSQL 10, you can use statement_timeout and idle_in_transaction_session_timeout. For MySQL 5.7, use max_execution_time. Temporary tables or table locks During your application and database design, remember that temporary tables and table locks are also blocking operations for scaling unless you enable the force scaling parameter. Potential timeout and force scaling results again in a proper transaction rollback. If you use either of those, consider the potential impact on your application side. A temporary table is a special type of table that allows you to store a temporary result set that you can reuse several times. Aurora Serverless removes the temporary table automatically when the session ends or the connection ends. You can also drop the table manually to remove a temporary table explicitly when you no longer need it. If you have to use temporary tables, try to limit their overall lifetime. Create a temporary table when you need it and drop it as soon as you can rather than wait for automatic cleanup. In some use cases, a temporary table is created internally as part of the statement. Users have no control over when this occurs. The lifetime of these temporary tables is the span of the query itself. Such examples might be UNION statements, views, derived tables, or CTE (common table expressions). For more information, see Internal Temporary Table Use in MySQL. A similar rule also applies to table locks. Table locks are typically used to emulate transactions or to get more speed when updating tables. If the session ends, either normally or abnormally, Aurora Serverless releases all the locks implicitly. The best option is to avoid table locks. If you must use it, hold the lock for the minimum necessary time. Retry logic Numerous components on a network, such as DNS servers, switches, load balancers, and others, can generate errors anywhere in the life of a given request. Other errors include the temporary unavailability of a service or timeouts that occur when a service is busy. These errors are typically self-correcting. The usual technique for dealing with these error responses is to implement retries in the client application. This technique increases the reliability of the application and reduces operational costs for the developer. When you design your application, make sure that you implement retry logic in your data access layer. For more information, see Exponential Backoff And Jitter and Timeouts, retries, and backoff with jitter. When forced scaling is enabled, the scaling happens as soon as the timeout is reached, which is 300 seconds by default. This behavior may cause a database interruption from your application. If you implement the retry logic, this is handled and retried on your database layer and doesn’t affect the rest of the application. In fact, this can potentially speed up the scaling process and your application can be more resilient. Difference between Aurora Serverless PostgreSQL and Aurora Serverless MySQL Aurora PostgreSQL and Aurora MySQL are two different database engines, but in terms of Aurora Serverless, both Aurora Serverless PostgreSQL and Aurora Serverless MySQL have no major differences. There are slight differences in the availability of ACU configurations and, consequently, specific server compute and memory configuration. The most important difference is that Aurora Serverless MySQL supports a minimum ACU configuration of 1 and Aurora Serverless PostgreSQL supports a minimum of 2. Accessing Aurora Serverless Aurora Serverless resides in the private subnet of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC). You can’t give an Aurora Serverless DB cluster a public IP address; you can only access it from within a VPC based on the Amazon VPC service. You can use any service, such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Lambda, Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), and more, if they reside within the same VPC. For developer access to the Aurora Serverless cluster, you have two kinds of access: the Data API or an SSH tunnel through a jump box. Data API access For the following options, you must enable the Data API for your Aurora Serverless DB cluster. For easy and basic access, you can use the Query Editor for Aurora Serverless on the Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) console. Query results are instantly visible on the console. The Query Editor is suitable for verifying the contents of the table or performing some quick SQL statements. You may prefer to use the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) directly, which Aurora Serverless supports. The following code is an example for Linux, macOS, or Unix: aws rds-data execute-statement --resource-arn "arn:aws:rds:us-east-1:123456789012:cluster:my_db_cluster" --database "mydb" --secret-arn "arn:aws:secretsmanager:us-east-1:123456789012:secret:my_secret" --sql "SELECT * FROM Customer" The following code is an example for Windows: aws rds-data execute-statement ^ --resource-arn "arn:aws:rds:us-east-1:123456789012:cluster:my_db_cluster" ^ --database "mydb" ^ --secret-arn "arn:aws:secretsmanager:us-east-1:123456789012:secret:my_secret" ^ --sql "SELECT * FROM Customer" Similarly, you can use the Data API to easily connect and run any SQL statement against the database with a simple Lambda function. The function doesn’t need to be inside a custom Amazon VPC or have any MySQL or PostgreSQL drivers. You just make SQL statements as an HTTP request.i SSH tunnel access The other option is using AWS Cloud9. AWS Cloud9 is a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE), which provides terminal access with just a browser. The main advantage is you don’t need to install or maintain a local IDE. For instructions, see Configure and Connect to Serverless MySQL Database. You might already be familiar with some IDEs, such as MySQL Workbench, HeidiSQL, pgAdmin, or DBeaver. You can still use them with a setup similar to that for AWS Cloud9. Because you can’t connect directly to your server over SSH, you must set up a jump box. This is the same as in the AWS Cloud9 configuration, which is done for you automatically. To set up a jump box, complete the following steps: Create a Linux-based EC2 instance in the same Region and the same VPC as the Aurora Serverless cluster. Make sure you can SSH to the instance using the user name and private key. Enable client network access to your cluster: Find the VPC security groups for your cluster. Choose Inbound Rules. Add a new rule with Source as the security group ID of your EC2 instance and Type as one of the following: MySQL/Aurora (3306) for MySQL PostgreSQL (5432) for PostgreSQL Update your IDE: For cluster hostname or IP address, use the Aurora Serverless cluster database endpoint. For cluster credentials, enter the cluster user name and password. For cluster port, enter the following: 3306 for MySQL 5432 for PostgreSQL For SSH host and port, set your public DNS name for your EC2 instance. For SSH user name, enter the user name you use to access your EC2 instance. For SSH, set your private key (.pem). Resilience Resilience is an important part of the design. Aurora Serverless offers features to help support your data resiliency. Failover Aurora separates computation capacity from storage. The storage volume for the cluster is spread across multiple Availability Zones. The durability of the data remains unaffected even if outages affect the DB instance or the associated Availability Zone. Aurora Serverless clusters are monitored for availability and automatically replaced when problems are detected; you don’t need to intervene on your end. Aurora Serverless manages the warmpool of pre-created DB clusters. The replacement process then fetches a new DB instance from the warmpooling service and replaces the unhealthy host. The DB instance for an Aurora Serverless DB cluster is created in a single Availability Zone. In the unlikely event that an entire Availability Zone becomes unavailable, Aurora Serverless launches a new instance for your cluster in one of the other Availability Zones. We refer to this capability as automatic Multi-AZ failover. This failover mechanism takes longer for Aurora Serverless than for an Aurora provisioned cluster. The Aurora Serverless Availability Zone failover is done on a best effort basis because it depends on demand and capacity availability in other Availability Zones within the given AWS Region. Because of that Aurora Serverless is not supported by the Aurora Multi-AZ SLA. Replication Binlog-based replication and the Aurora Replicas feature are limited for Aurora Serverless DB clusters. If you need these features, consider using the provisioned version of Aurora. For more information, see Limitations of Aurora Serverless. You can use Aurora Serverless as a target for AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) data replications. For more information, see Getting started with AWS Database Migration Service. Security Cloud security at AWS is the highest priority. The following sections show you the recommended configuration of Aurora Serverless to meet your security and compliance objectives. You also learn how to use other AWS services that help you monitor and secure your Aurora Serverless resources. Patching and maintenance Aurora Serverless performs regular maintenance so your DB cluster has the latest features, fixes, and security updates. Aurora Serverless performs maintenance in a non-disruptive manner whenever possible. However, it may interrupt your workload in some use cases. For more information, see How Aurora Serverless Works. To avoid any interruptions, we recommend you follow the same best practices as already mentioned in the Scale-blocking operations section. TLS/SSL To improve security, you can connect to Aurora Serverless clusters using the Transport Layer Security/Secure Sockets Layer (TLS/SSL) protocol. The use of SSL is recommended and it’s the first choice for establishing a new connection, but it’s not required. To make sure that your session uses TLS, specify the requirement on the client side with the --ssl-mode parameter equal to VERIFY_CA or VERIFY_IDENTITY. Aurora Serverless supports TLS protocol version 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2. Snapshots The cluster volume for an Aurora Serverless cluster is always encrypted. You can choose the encryption key, but can’t turn off encryption. To copy or share a snapshot of an Aurora Serverless cluster, you encrypt the snapshot using your own AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) key. Monitoring Aurora Serverless provides a variety of CloudWatch metrics that you can monitor to determine the health and performance of your Aurora Serverless DB cluster. To access CloudWatch metrics, you can use tools such as the Amazon RDS console, AWS CLI, or CloudWatch API. In a traditional database scenario, you need to monitor several infrastructure metrics. Because Aurora Serverless is a fully managed service, you don’t need to monitor the health of the underlying infrastructure. Platform and application management and any operating system and network configuration is the responsibility of AWS, but it’s important to remember that customers are responsible for access management, their application, and performance. The shared responsibility model describes responsibilities between AWS and the customer. Creating a proper monitoring plan is a difficult topic with many variables. For more information about setting up the right monitoring goals, see Monitoring an Amazon Aurora DB Cluster. Amazon RDS Performance Insights is currently available for use with only some DB engines. For more information, see Using Amazon RDS Performance Insights. Logs and auditing You can have Aurora publish some or all database logs to CloudWatch. You can perform real-time analysis of the log data, audit database activity, and use CloudWatch to create alarms and view metrics. You can also store your log records in highly durable storage. You select which logs to publish by enabling the configuration parameters in the DB cluster parameter group associated with the Serverless cluster. Serverless clusters don’t require you to specify which log types to upload to CloudWatch like provisioned clusters. Serverless clusters automatically upload all available logs. When you disable a log configuration parameter, the publishing of the log to CloudWatch stops. You can also delete the logs in CloudWatch if you no longer need them. After enabling Aurora Serverless log events, you can monitor the events in CloudWatch Logs. A new log group is automatically created for the Aurora DB cluster under the following prefix, in which my_db_cluster represents the DB cluster name, and log_type represents the log type: /aws/rds/cluster/my_db_cluster/log_type Aurora Serverless PostgreSQL uses a single log type called error. For Aurora Serverless MySQL, you control logging with the following parameters: slow_query_log – Creates a slow query log long_query_time – Prevents fast-running queries from being logged in the slow query log general_log – Creates the general log log_queries_not_using_indexes – Logs all queries that don’t use an index to the slow query log server_audit_logging – Enables or disables Advanced Auditing, and the server_audit_events specifies which audit events to log For more information, see Publishing Amazon Aurora MySQL Logs to Amazon CloudWatch Logs and Using Advanced Auditing with an Amazon Aurora MySQL DB Cluster. For Aurora Serverless PostgreSQL, you control logging with the following parameters: log_statement – Controls which SQL statements are logged log_min_duration_statement – Sets the limit in milliseconds of a statement to be logged log_connections – Logs all new client connection details; enabled by default and can’t be modified log_disconnections – Logs all client disconnections; enabled by default and can’t be modified log_temp_files – Controls logging of temporary file names and sizes log_lock_waits – Logs sessions that are stuck in a locked state log_autovacuum_min_duration – Logs information of autovacuum and autoanalyzer runs (you must enable rds.force_autovacuum_logging_level) force_admin_logging_level – Captures the activities from rdsadmin user For more information, see Working with RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL logs: Part 1 and Working with RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL logs: Part 2. Conclusion This post discussed best practices for Aurora Serverless, which should help you design your architecture and make more robust, secure, and scalable applications. ProductionControl
Deming and worked with Japanese producers to create the idea of Total Quality, where Quality extends past the manufacturing procedure to all organizational processes and instills the values of Quality in each worker.x As a result of this Total excellent transformation, Japan turned into a manufacturing powerhouse, vastly increasing its market share at the expense of American manufacturers who had yet to recognize the worth of Total Quality.American manufacturers and legislators started to comprehend the crises of inferior Quality in American manufacturing. Globalization and emerging technologies have expanded the tools used to fulfill with Quality ProductionQuality and both the range of Quality. New approaches, such as Six Sigma developed by Motorola, have achieved levels of version and earnings reduction to make services and goods that are free from flaws. Quality is now seen as an approach which can be applied to any organization, including government, services, health care, education, as well as nascent technology such as Bitcoin and Block chain.Implementing Quality Management and investment in a needs the initiative of executive sponsorship in any organization. Leadership will not spend money without a solid business case that emphasizes either the costs of not investing. Given the reality that the advantages of Quality Management are difficult to quantify in direct terms and have longer payback periods, executives with no expertise in Quality Management often don't observe the value of investing in it compared to investments in engineering and sales, where the direct benefits are simpler to calculate. The truth is that the typical catalyst for garnering executive sponsorship for Quality is often a negative compelling occasion, such as a recall or major reduction of market share While damaging persuasive events can indeed be powerful catalysts for change and also help concentrate executive attention on Quality Management, it might also come at enormous cost: lives may be lost, ecosystems might be destroyed, and the company may endure significant brand and fiscal damage as these external failures increase prices by an order of magnitude.Gaining executive aid begins with presenting a solid business case supported by qualitative and qualitative information that tell the story of optimistic persuasive events and fiscal return such as reduced waste, higher efficiency, and increased customer satisfaction.By creating a strong case for proactively investing in Quality, associations can avoid situations where they only see value in Quality by responding to unfavorable events that have a destructive and irreversible effect on the ProductionQuality , the marketplace, and the environment.Quality direction has four elements: quality planning, quality assurance and quality control and continual progress. These include processes, tools and processes which are used to make sure that the outputs and benefits fulfill customer requirements. The first component, quality planning, involves the preparation of an excellent management plan which describes the processes and metrics that will be used.
Tumblr media
The quality management strategy has to be agreed to ensure that their expectations for quality are correctly identified. The procedures should conform to the procedures, values and culture of their host organisation. Quality assurance offers confidence to the sponsor organisation that its projects, programmes and portfolios are being well managed. It validates the constant use of processes and standards, and ensures staff have the knowledge, abilities and attitudes to fulfil their job roles and responsibilities. Quality assurance must be independent of the project, developer or portfolio where it applies. The next part, quality management , is composed of review, measurement and testing. For this to work, specifications must be under configuration control. Commonly while preserving acceptable time and price constraints, this will be to adapt issues or change requests. Any ProductionQuality changes to approval criteria should be accepted and communicated. The final component, continual improvement, is the standard term used by businesses to explain the way that information provided by quality assurance and quality management processes is utilized to induce improvements in efficiency and efficacy. A maturity model provides a framework where continual improvement can be initiated and embedded in the organisation.Projects that are part of a developer may well have much of their quality management program developed at developer level to ensure that standards are in accord with the remainder of the programmer. Projects need to develop their own excellent management programs, either from scratch or by adapting those from other projects. This may seem to be an administrative burden at the beginning of smaller projects, but is always worthwhile in the end.Projects deliver tangible outputs which are subject to a lot of forms of quality management, determined by the technical nature of the work and codes affecting particular industries. Existing lessons learned should be consulted at the beginning of every project, and any relevant lessons utilized in the planning of this project documentation. In the close of each project, the lessons learned should be recorded as part of this post-project inspection and fed back into the knowledge database. The duty of the developer management group is to create an excellent management program which encompasses the diverse contexts and technical requirements included inside the developer. This sets the standards for the job quality management plans and also acts as a plan for quality in the advantages realization regions of the programmer.A comprehensive ProductionQuality management strategy at developer degree can greatly reduce the effort involved in preparing project-level quality management plans.Quality control of outputs is mainly handled at project level, but the developer may get involved in which an output from one job is an input signal to another, or where additional inspection is required when outputs from two or more jobs are brought together. The programmer is responsible for quality management of advantages. This is a intricate task because the acceptance criteria of a benefit may cover subjective as well as quantifiable variables but benefits should be defined in measurable terms so that quality management can be applied.
The standard scale of programmed means that they have a very beneficial role to play in continuous progress. Programmer assurance will ensure that jobs do take existing lessons learned into account then capture their particular lessons for addition to the knowledge database. The very nature of a portfolio signifies that it is not likely to need a portfolio quality management plan. Quality management for your portfolio should be indistinguishable from the quality management policies of their host organisation for a whole. It may be necessary for the portfolio management team to give guidance on the use of policies or perhaps augment them where the portfolio creates particular requirements. The portfolio is accountable for delivering strategic objectives. These may be expressed in very broad terms ProductionQuality in difficulty. When establishing the scope of a portfolio, attention should be given to defining acceptance criteria for tactical goals so they can be caliber controlled.Continual development is very much an issue in portfolio level. The portfolio management group needs to make sure that the direction of programmed and projects becomes efficient and effective with the passage of time. Quality management comprises everything we do to be sure we deliver and produce our firm's products and services to spec and at the appropriate price. Quality direction also includes making sure products arrive on time. It guarantees that a organization's products or services will be consistent.Quality management concentrates both on product and service quality and about the means to attain it. Quality control ensures that there's a high quality of services and products delivered. As every item or service left is exposed to a thorough quality assurance procedure to ensure the outcome is reliable and durable.Quality management ensures customer satisfaction as the product and services delivered goals to exceed the expectation levels of the client. This finally contributes to client loyalty.Quality management increases efficiency and ProductionQuality which favorably affect the revenues for a company. The achievement of quality management initiatives is dependent on teamwork. This system defines a company will achieve delivery and the creation of the item or service they provide to their customers. The QMS needs to be specific to the service or product you provide, so it is very important to tailor it to your needs when employed in your company.

HOW DO HEAT PUMPS WORK? BENEFITS OF INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE, & SAVINGS ON REPAIR
The winters in New Albany are cold, wet, and cloudy. To keep you and your family warm and comfortable, your HVAC system is working overtime from November to March. If you’re running your system around the clock, and your utility bills keep climbing, you might be ready for a heat pump.
Heat pumps are some of the most energy-efficient HVAC systems on the market. They can also be added on to the system you already have to keep your temperatures comfortable and your utility bills manageable. If you’re looking for heat pump repair or installation, look no further. Allegiance Heating and Air Conditioning is here to help.
WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?
In the simplest terms, a heat pump is an all in one heating and air conditioning system that works year-round. It uses the outside air to both heat a home in winter and cool it in summer. On a more technical level, a heat pump uses a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system that can be reversed throughout the year to either heat or cool a controlled space.
A heat pump consists of two main components: an indoor air handler and an outdoor unit, similar to a central air conditioner. The outdoor unit contains a compressor that circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the indoor and outdoor units.
HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP WORK?
The main difference between a traditional HVAC system and a heat pump is how they create heat. A heat pump uses electricity to move heat from one place to another. A furnace burns fuel to create heat.
Heat pumps constantly move warm air from one place to another – to where it’s needed or not needed, depending on the season. Even in the chilliest of New Albany winters, there is heat energy present in the outdoor air.
When it’s cold outside, a heat pump extracts what outside heat is available and transfers it back indoors. When it’s warm outside, it reverses directions and acts like an air conditioner, removing heat from your home and pushing it back outside.
Heat pumps work best where moderate climates are present, as supplemental heating sources may be needed in areas with lower temperatures. As we mentioned earlier, heat pumps can make great add-ons to your existing home heating system, for year-round comfort.
With this dual-fuel system option, the two systems would share the heating load but never function at the same time. Each system operates when it is most cost-effective, as the heat pump would serve as the primary heating and cooling system. When the temperature drops below the heat pump’s ability to operate efficiently, the gas furnace will take over until the temperature rises again.
No matter where you live, a heat pump will give you more bang for your buck by utilizing electricity to move air around before utilizing a fuel-dependent HVAC system. Heat pumps can also work in conjunction with your pre-existing HVAC system to reduce utility bills as well. To see if a heat pump is the right choice for you, contact us today.
TWO-STAGE VS SINGLE-STAGE HEATING
Heat pumps operate on two-stage heating. Understanding the difference between two-stage and single-stage heating will help improve understanding of how a heat pump operates.
Single-Stage Heating: With conventional, single-stage heating your system is either on or off. There’s no other option. There is a fixed gas valve and a single-speed blower. No matter what the temperature outside, single-stage heating systems work at the same speed. This doesn’t allow as much energy efficiency as a two-stage heating system.
Two-Stage Heating: With two-stage heating, there is a variable-speed blower motor. The benefit of two-stage heating is that your heat pump can run at a lower setting in milder weather and a higher setting when it gets really cold outside. Two-stage heating systems can run for longer periods of time, provide less noise, and allows even heat distribution throughout your home.
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE: WHY IT MATTERS TO WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL
Maintenance of any home’s heating system is critical for energy efficiency and saving money. Heat pump repair is important to keep your utility bills low and keep your system running smoothly.
Heat pump systems typically have lower maintenance needs because the system is designed to be efficient. As we stated, these systems operate on two-stage heating, and without proper maintenance and heat pump repair, you could see your utility bills increase dramatically.
If your heat pump goes out, your air handler comes on and functions in overtime to produce heat, which in turn, is way more expensive to run your system. As a homeowner, you would have no idea heat pump repair was needed because your system would still be producing heat.
However, once you receive your utility bill, you would notice a huge increase, because your system has unknowingly been working harder to heat your home. In turn, when you need heat pump repair, it’s best to call a local, trusted, and licensed professional in your area to check on your heat pump and complete any necessary heat pump repairs.
We recommend serving your system with HVAC maintenance on a regular basis, to avoid heat pump repair down the road. Lucky for you, we’re here for both occurrences, as we offer a maintenance service club, as well as 24-hour emergency service, even on weekends and holidays. Never hesitate to contact us should you need heat pump repair!
WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMPS
Heat pumps offer some of the highest efficiencies in the HVAC industry. Specifically, water source heat pumps (WSHP) can dramatically reduce energy costs for homes in New Albany.
At Allegiance, we are a strong advocate for water source heat pumps. While it is certainly not a type of comfort system that will be available to everyone, if you live in an area close to a well, lake, or another natural water source, it is definitely an option worth considering and provides a wide range of benefits:
Individual Zoning: One of the biggest benefits of WSHP is individual zoning. A WSHP system is created with multiple units in individual zones. This allows the system to take the heat out of an area that is rejecting it and use it in another area that is demanding it. The WSHP units can be placed in dropped ceilings or hidden away from occupied spaces in mechanical rooms or utility closets rather than requiring the space of a traditional air course unit.
Simultaneous Heating and Cooling: Because the simplistic system can be reversed, water source heat pumps are well-suited to both cooling and heating throughout the year when necessary. In fact, depending on the orientation of the building and demands, it is common for one system to simultaneously heat and cool different areas at the same time. WSHPs can take the heat out of an area that is rejecting it and use it in another area that is demanding it. Energy recovery and transport is an area where WSHPs truly excel.
Reliability: Because each unit in a WSHP system is an independent, packaged system, it eliminates the chance of a total system failure. This makes it ideal for offices, apartments, hotels, and schools because if one unit in one area goes down, the other units are not affected.
Simple Service: Water source heat pumps are simple to service as a residential HVAC system.
Longevity: Because they aren’t working as hard as traditional HVAC systems, they have a very long life, often lasting as long as 20 years.
Efficiency: One of the biggest advantages is that thermal energy is economical and efficient. WSHPs also offer some of the highest efficiencies in the HVAC industry. The closed-loop water-source heat is economically efficiently and safely transported to wherever it can be used.
Energy Savings: Using the heat naturally available in water and air, reduces the energy required to produce heat from fuel. The ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), sets the minimum efficiency requirements for WSHPs to be higher than traditional air-cooled heat pumps by almost double. For a typical building, this reduces energy costs by about 80 percent.
Quiet HVAC Operation: Water source heat pumps are quieter and have a longer lifetime than other HVAC systems. Because the system is so simple, there’s not a lot of operational noise.
Simple Installation: The system itself is assembled in a factory and tested before delivery. They are installed in a duct system with two pipes, a supply, and return. They can also be added to condos, commercial buildings, and shopping centers with minimal disruption to tenants or customers.
Quick Financial Payback: The installation of a water source is simple and typically you’ll make your money back in less than five years for residential properties and 10 years for larger commercial properties in New Albany.
Safety: Water is nonflammable, nontoxic, and has a high specific heat value, which makes it an ideal way to transport energy. It is safe and effective without any of the negative consequences of natural gas or refrigerant.
OTHER TYPES OF HEAT PUMPS
For those near New Albany with moderate heating and cooling needs, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Water source heat pumps require a nearby water source, but there are other heat pump options that are available even without a pond, well, or lake nearby. The three main types of heat pumps include:
Air Source: This is the most commonly used type of pump. The air source heat pump refrigerant uses a compressor and two coils of copper tubing (one inside, one outside). In the winter months, the liquid refrigerant extracts heat from the air and evaporates into a gas, releasing it into the home. In the summer months, the refrigerant flow reverses and blows cool air into the home.
Water Source: The water source pump is what we’ve recently discussed. This type of heat pump uses a nearby water source to pull heat from the water or air and transfers it where it’s needed. A water source heat pump is often quieter and carries a smaller eco-friendly footprint, since water is more efficient at carrying away heat than air.
Geothermal: Also known as a ground-source unit, this type of system uses heat that is underneath the ground. These are quieter, last longer, need less maintenance, and do not depend on outside air temperature.
Most heat pump systems will use your existing ductwork. However, for homes in New Albany without ductwork, mini-split or ductless heat pumps are very popular options.
Mini-Split-System: For room additions, or homes without ductwork, mini-splits bring the benefits of an air pump to a small area. They are small and easy to work within any space. Each unit, or room, has its own thermostat controls, allowing you to heat and cool rooms separately. Each zone is connected to a single outdoor unit.
In addition, at Allegiance, we offer heat pump repair on all makes and models of these systems. Just contact us today for more information or if you need service on your home’s system!
COST AND EFFICIENCY OF YOUR SYSTEM
A number of factors, from your climate to existing ductwork, will influence whether or not a heat pump system is right for your home. Investing in a heat pump is extremely worth it. A highly-efficient model could save you 30% to 40% on your energy bill and a water-source model could save you even more.
The cost of a heat pump depends on the type of system you choose for your home, and the costs of labor, equipment, installation, and any warranties included. Contact us today to learn more about the best option for your home.

FAILING
My failure was not the end of me; it was just the beginning. I knew that my efforts wouldn’t be enough and things still weren’t looking good even as I pushed myself to the limit, but I didn’t mind that because another thing that contributes to failing is not trying. Instead, I prepared for a lesson of a lifetime and got ready to let go of my future as an alumnus of the UST-CRS Physical Therapy department.
HEARING THE NEWS
My friends told me about the news. They probably felt sad and devastated with the news they had to deliver to me, because all they wanted to do was cheer me up. They were very invested in trying to make me feel better. Some even rooted for me to reach the 74.5 borderline. However, that was a gapang (long shot) I could have done, but didn’t.
We all hoped for the best and prayed for a miracle. But I knew that what I did was not even close to pulling my grades up.  My friends firmly believed my capabilities could or might reach the un-expectable. However, after telling me the news, they did the most humane thing to do, which was to comfort me in their special ways.
Arieane messaged me and told me the subjects I failed, and asked me to call. Reading the message made me cry, I was in denial and even told myself that there was probably a typo in the list of failed student numbers. But hearing another voice confirm this meant that it’s final. Nothing else could be done especially that the number of units I failed was already 6, running for 9. Arieane didn’t have any worries to what may happen to me, she had full confidence in me. I didn’t know why, or maybe I couldn’t recognize why.
Lindsey texted sorry and all I felt was shit, because that was everything in my mind, really. I was finally caught by this shitty feeling that’s been chasing me and now it has engulfed all the gyri of my brain.
I called Ria to tell her the news, and she made me feel better about the situation because she mentioned that at least I have an out now. She made me feel that it was okay, that it was expected. Perhaps we knew this would happen all along, but still hoped for the best. She somewhat knew what to say, or maybe we had reached that conversation on what to or not.
Ashley, Eya, and Erica asked how I was. They also asked about my plans and my feelings. One of them knew me more than the others, and that person was Eya. She made me feel extra EXTRA special because she believed in me the way I hoped for someone to.
I called Pau, I told her what happened and she gave comfort but, I was in shock to even understand.
Tita Ella saw me cry, she saw me weep and asked for refuge from people around the house but, all she could tell me was that it’s okay and that I had to focus on what I have with me today. It was priceless because everything created a moment to reflect and remember that I was more than failing UST, my parents, and myself.  Yes, myself, because that was one of my biggest fears –failing and disappointing myself. God knew the measures I thought of and did just to avoid that feeling or reality.
I took a vacation immediately and it made me feel better about my situation. I thought maybe things would be fine, but not everything was okay.
My parents were disappointed and frustrated with the opportunity that passed. It was mostly my mom who was angry but it was because she was largely disappointed. She brought up thoughts and feelings from the past and it made me upset because I already felt bad and she made it worse.  (or what I think she was trying to make me feel). She made me feel incapable and worthless. Maybe she didn’t intend for me to feel that way, nonetheless that was 80% of my feelings. Because after that, all I could think about was dying and giving my body to soil that needs fertilization.
I kept crying, blaming myself (sometimes other people), and getting mad at everything that made me who I was and everyone that I crossed paths with afterwards because I thought I was done. Over. K.O.
In order to feel better, all I thought of was the people who made me smile, laugh, and accepted me for who I thought or believed I was.
I said my goodbyes and appreciation to the people I would be leaving behind because I knew if I waited any longer I’d have forgotten the things that were already in my head. (short term memory might get the best of me). I knew that it was too soon but, I felt that it was the only thing I was doing right. But guess what? It made me feel even worse because it meant that I would lose people I love and they may forget about me. It reminded me of the 3 men who came to and left my life-- with the most memorable night ever (because almost everything good and bad was because of them, they were both inspirations and distractions in my life). This situation felt similar because I was once again left alone, even if these people said they haven’t actually left me. However, this claim was very unrealistic in my point of view.
SEARCHING FOR OPTIONS
Initially, I had a plan. It was to continue PT. For what reasons? You may ask. Well here they are:
a.       For me to feel better because my goal was to conquer what I failed
b.      Maybe it’s what I really wanted
c.       God’s unknown purpose
After days of searching for a new school, I told Tita Tel and Tita Peng the news and all they told me was, After PT, ano na? They told me the situations of PTs and some challenges I may face. Besides PT, we ended up discussing all the other possible careers I could take. I told them I was actually considering OT, ND, and secretly Social Work because it was similar to PT but focused more on the ADL’s and behavior of the patient.
Everything was a burden from this point, it brought so much doubt and questions that I could not answer by myself. I knew I was alone despite the support of my family, friends and mentors. For a time I believed that God too had left me and let me wander on my own but, a small voice kept on saying that this was just a big obstacle to conquer. “Nothing is what it seems… and everything happens for a reason”
I had so many choices, and multiple possibilities that I could go to and yet nothing seemed to fill my hunger. I wanted to feel completeness but my question was, how?
I was alone, and it felt weird but thankfully I had people come to me and made me feel that I would still be their friend regardless of my situation. They made me feel the love that I needed to be reminded of.
My choice was to study here in the Philippines but my mom considered the option of me studying abroad. But, after all that happened, I knew studying in another country wasn’t the best choice. I searched with my family and those whom I considered my family. These were the steps they advised me to do, and I did all of these:
1.       List schools that are accredited internationally
2.       Within those schools, choose my preferred course/s
3.       Apply and take a test
4.       Decide
Before deciding, I considered:
1.       International competence
2.       Local recognition
3.       Demand
4.       Multiple paths
DECIDING WHERE TO GO AND STICKING TO IT was the biggest challenge that hit me. It was the most, let’s say, confusing and mortifying part because you had to consider a lot of things like:
1.       Time / Year you’ll graduate
2.       Tuition fee
3.       Accredited subjects
4.       Location of the school
5.       Retention of other studied topics
6.       The Future
Everything became an issue because of the fear I felt. I didn’t want to make a mistake. I wasn’t sure if this was what God really wanted for me, considering all the love, energy, spirit and trust he gave me; or if it’s the devil trying to lure me into him. I was afraid to bring myself to danger. Everything was a blur. I made a chart in which I listed down my options so I could see them clearly, and each item had an “it depends” answer and I hate myself for that (depending on all the variables).
FAITH
This is where I reassure myself. It is what makes me believe in God’s purpose regardless of what I or others think. By believing in something uncertain and abstract, I manage to keep a positive outlook despite all the negativity life has given me.
Having faith is difficult especially when I have been down the sewage, or when I see myself as trash and of no worth. It hasn’t been easy dragging myself to become a better version of me. I don’t see myself positively because of the fact that I FAILED and this has led me to believe everything I try after will eventually fail too.
Faith is something that you can control. Just solely believe in God’s perfect purpose for you.
Maybe God allowed this to happen to strengthen and prepare me for something big that I or anyone else doesn’t know about yet. He’s giving me a chance to learn more about Him through this experience. God is strengthening my faith in Him, so that when a bigger wave hits (hopefully, no more), my roots or foundation would be unbreakable. God is teaching me the value of time, and how to be patient with his ways even if they were not part of my own expectations.
God made a road-less path for me to travel on. All I have to do is surrender myself to Him and He will lead the way.
BELIEVING IN WHAT I KNOW NOW—is not advisable…regardless of how I started because what I and everybody else knows will always change. Everything you think you know may even harm you. How? It’s simple. It is because the human mind is faulty, easily persuaded and it isn’t strong enough. I may be wrong, but at least I know that’s exactly how my mind is. So I think my best solution is to just believe in what God truly is and what He gives those who believe in Him.
Honestly, not everyone knows everything that that I have been through and I am not planning to share that part of my life yet with just about anyone. It is not a pretty picture but not as ugly as you think it may be, because everything that happened, I allowed it to happen.

Now, there is no such thing as the perfect advice or saying, but there are multiple verses from the Bible to enlighten or lift your spirit even by just 0.01%. That’s better than nothing, right? HAHA Thank you, Yan, for editing and sharing what you think :)

Should You Test That? When to Engage in SEO Split Tests
This blog was written by Tim Mehta, a former Conversion Rate Optimization Strategist with Portent, Inc.
Running A/B/n experiments (aka “Split Tests”) to improve your search engine rankings has been in the SEO toolkit for longer than many would think. Moz actually published an article back in 2015 broaching the subject, which is a great summary of how you can run these tests.
What I want to cover here is understanding the right times to run an SEO split-test, and not how you should be running them.
I run a CRO program at an agency that’s well-known for SEO. The SEO team brings me in when they are preparing to run an SEO split-test to ensure we are following best practices when it comes to experimentation. This has given me the chance to see how SEOs are currently approaching split-testing, and where we can improve upon the process.
One of my biggest observations when working on these projects has been the most pressing and often overlooked question: “Should we test that?”
Risks of running unnecessary SEO split-tests
Below you will find a few potential risks of running an SEO split-test. You might be willing to take some of these risks, while there are others you will most definitely want to avoid.
Wasted resources
With on-page split-tests (not SEO split-tests), you can be much more agile and launch multiple tests per month without expending significant resources. Plus, the pre-test and post-test analyses are much easier to perform with the calculators and formulas readily available through our tools.
With SEO split-testing, there’s a heavy amount of lifting that goes into planning a test out, actually setting it up, and then executing it.
What you’re essentially doing is taking an existing template of similar pages on your site and splitting it up into two (or more) separate templates. This requires significant development resources and poses more risk, as you can’t simply “turn the test off” if things aren’t going well. As you probably know, once you’ve made a change to hurt your rankings, it’s a lengthy uphill battle to get them back.
The pre-test analysis to anticipate how long you need to run the test to reach statistical significance is more complex and takes up a lot of time with SEO split-testing. It’s not as simple as, “Which one gets more organic traffic?” because each variation you test has unique attributes to it. For example, if you choose to split-test the product page template of half of your products versus the other half of them, the actual products in each variation can play a part in its performance.
Therefore, you have to create a projection of organic traffic for each variation based on the pages that exist within it, and then compare the actual data to your projections. Inherently, using your projection as your main indicator of failure or success is dangerous, because a projection is just an educated guess and not necessarily what reality reflects.
For the post-test analysis, since you’re measuring organic traffic versus a hypothesized projection, you have to look at other data points to determine success. Evan Hall, Senior SEO Strategist at Portent, explains:
“Always use corroborating data. Look at relevant keyword rankings, keyword clicks, and CTR (if you trust Google Search Console). You can safely rely on GSC data if you’ve found it matches your Google Analytics numbers pretty well.”
The time to plan a test, develop it on your live site, “end” the test (if needed), and analyze the test after the fact are all demanding tasks.
Because of this, you need to make sure you’re running experiments with a strong hypothesis and enough differences in the variation versus the original that you will see a significant difference in performance from them. You also need to corroborate the data that would point to success, as the organic traffic versus your projection alone isn’t reliable enough to be confident in your results.
Unable to scale the results
There are many factors that go into your search engine rankings that are out of your hands. These lead to a robust number of outside variables that can impact your test results and lead to false positives, or false negatives.
This hurts your ability to learn from the test: was it our variation’s template or another outside factor that led to the results? Unfortunately, with Google and other search engines, there’s never a definitive way to answer that question.
Without validation and understanding that it was the exact changes you made that led to the results, you won’t be able to scale the winning concept to other channels or parts of the site. Although, if you are focused more on individual outcomes and not learnings, then this might not be as much of a risk for you.
When to run an SEO split-test
Uncertainty around keyword or query performance
If your series of pages for a particular category have a wide variety of keywords/queries that users search for when looking for that topic, you can safely engage in a meta title or meta description SEO split-test.
From a conversion rate perspective, having a more relevant keyword in relation to a user’s intent will generally lead to higher engagement. Although, as mentioned, most of your tests won’t be winners.
For example, we have a client in the tire retail industry who shows up in the SERPs for all kinds of “tire” queries. This includes things like winter tires, seasonal tires, performance tires, etc. We hypothesized that including the more specific phrase “winter” tires instead of “tires” in our meta titles during the winter months would lead to a higher CTR and more organic traffic from the SERPs. While our results ended up being inconclusive, we learned that changing this meta title did not hurt organic traffic or CTR, which gives us a prime opportunity for a follow-up test.
You can also utilize this tactic to test out a higher-volume keyword in your metadata. But this approach is also never a sure thing, and is worth testing first. As highlighted in this Whiteboard Friday from Moz, they saw “up to 20-plus-percent drops in organic traffic after updating meta information in titles and so forth to target the more commonly-searched-for variant.”
In other words, targeting higher-volume keywords seems like a no-brainer, but it’s always worth testing first.
Proof of concept and risk mitigation for large-scale sites
This is the most common call for running an SEO split-test. Therefore, we reached out to some experts to get their take on when this scenario turns into a prime opportunity for testing.
Jenny Halasz, President at JLH Marketing, talks about using SEO split-tests to prove out concepts or ideas that haven’t gotten buy-in:
“What I have found many times is that suggesting to a client they try something on a smaller subset of pages or categories as a ‘proof of concept’ is extremely effective. By keeping a control and focusing on trends rather than whole numbers, I can often show a client how changing a template has a positive impact on search and/or conversions.”
She goes on to reference an existing example that emphasizes an alternate testing tactic other than manipulating templates:
“I’m in the middle of a test right now with a client to see if some smart internal linking within a subset of products (using InLinks and OnCrawl’s InRank) will work for them. This test is really fun to watch because the change is not really a template change, but a navigation change within a category. If it works as I expect it to, it could mean a whole redesign for this client.”
Ian Laurie emphasizes the use of SEO split-testing as a risk mitigation tool. He explains:
“For me, it’s about scale. If you’re going to implement a change impacting tens or hundreds of thousands of pages, it pays to run a split test. Google’s unpredictable, and changing that many pages can have a big up- or downside. By testing, you can manage risk and get client (external or internal) buy-in on enterprise sites.”
If you’re responsible for a large site that is heavily dependent on non-branded organic searches, it pays to test before releasing any changes to your templates, regardless of the size of the change. In this case, you aren’t necessarily hoping for a “winner.” Your desire should be “does not break anything.”
Evan Hall emphasizes that you can utilize split-testing as a tool for justifying smaller changes that you’re having trouble getting buy-in for:
“Budget justification is for testing changes that require a lot of developer hours or writing. Some e-commerce sites may want to put a blurb of text on every PLP, but that might require a lot of writing for something not guaranteed to work. If the test suggests that content will provide 1.5% more organic traffic, then the effort of writing all that text is justifiable.”
Making big changes to your templates
In experimentation, there’s a metric called a “Minimum Detectable Effect” (MDE). This metric represents the percentage difference in performance you expect the variation to have versus the original. The more changes and more differences between your original and your variation, the higher your MDE should be.
The graph below emphasizes that the lower your MDE (lift), the more traffic you will need to reach a statistically significant result. In turn, the higher the MDE (lift), the less sample size you will need.
For example, If you are redesigning the site architecture of your product page templates, you should consider making it noticeably different from both a visual and back-end (code structure) perspective. While user research or on-page A/B testing may have led to the new architecture or design, it’s still unclear whether the proposed changes will impact rankings.
This should be the most common reason that you run an SEO split test. Given all of the subjectivity of the pre-test and post-test analysis, you want to make sure your variation yields a different enough result to be confident that the variation did in fact have a significant impact. Of course, with bigger changes, comes bigger risks.
While larger sites have the luxury of testing smaller things, they are still at the mercy of their own guesswork. For less robust sites, if you are going to run an SEO split test on a template, it needs to be different enough not only for users to behave differently but for Google to evaluate and rank your page differently as well.
Communicating experimentation for SEO split-tests
Regardless of your SEO expertise, communicating with stakeholders about experimentation requires a skill set of its own.
The expectations with testing are highly volatile. Some people expect every test to be a winner. Some expect you to give them definitive answers on what will work better. Unfortunately, these are false expectations. To avoid them, you need to establish realistic expectations early on for your manager, client, or whoever you are running a split test for.
Expectation 1: Most of your tests will fail
This understanding is a pillar of all successful experimentation programs. For people not close to the subject, it’s also the hardest pill to swallow. You have to get them to accept the fact that the time and effort that goes into the first iteration of a test will most likely lead to an inconclusive or losing test.
The most valuable aspect of experimentation and split-testing is the iterative process each test undergoes. The true outcome of successful experimentation, regardless if it’s SEO split-testing or other types, is the culmination of multiple tests that lead to gradual increases in major KPIs.
Expectation 2: You are working with probabilities, not sure things
This expectation applies especially to SEO split-testing, as you are utilizing a variety of metrics as indirect signals of success. This helps people understand that, even if you reach 99% significance, there are no guarantees of the results once the winning variation is implemented.
This principle also gives you wiggle-room for pre-test and post-test analysis. That doesn’t mean you can manipulate the data in your favor, but does mean you don’t need to spend hours and hours coming up with an empirically data-driven projection. It also allows you to utilize your subjective expert opinion based on all the metrics you are analyzing to determine success.
Expectation 3: You need a large enough sample size
Without a large enough sample size, you shouldn’t even entertain the idea of running an SEO split test unless your stakeholders are patient enough to wait several months for results.
Sam Nenzer, a consultant for SearchPilot and Distilled, explains how to know if you have enough traffic for testing:
“Over the course of our experience with SEO split testing, we’ve generated a rule of thumb: if a site section of similar pages doesn’t receive at least 1,000 organic sessions per day in total, it’s going to be very hard to measure any uplift from your split test.”
Therefore, if your site doesn’t have the right traffic, you may want to default to low-risk implementations or competitive research to validate your ideas.
Expectation 4: The goal of experimentation is to mitigate risk with the potential of performance improvement
The key term here is “potential” performance improvement. If your test yields a winning variation, and you implement it across your site, don’t expect the same results to happen as you saw during the test. The true goal for all testing is to introduce new ideas to your site with very low risk and potential for improved metrics.
For example, if you are updating the architecture or code of a PDP template to accommodate a Google algorithm change, the goal isn’t necessarily to increase organic traffic. The goal is to reduce the negative impact you may see from the algorithm change.
Let your stakeholders know that you can also utilize split-testing to improve business value or internal efficiencies. This includes things like releasing code updates that users never see, or a URL/CMS update for groups of pages or several microsites at a time.
Summary
While it’s tempting to run an SEO split test, it’s vital that you understand the inherent risks of it to ensure that you’re getting the true value you need out of it. This will help inform you on when the scenario calls for a split test or an alternative approach. You also need to be communicating experimentation with realistic expectations from the get-go.
There are major inherent risks of engaging with SEO split-testing that you don’t see with on-page tests that CRO usually runs, including wasted resources and non scalable results.
Some of the scenarios where you should feel confident in engaging with an SEO split test include where you’re uncertain of keyword and query performance, proof-of-concept and risk mitigation for larger-scale websites, justification for ideas that require robust resources, and when you’re considering making big changes to your templates.
And remember, one of the biggest challenges of experimentation is properly communicating it to others. Everyone has different expectations for testing, so you need to get ahead of it and address those expectations right away.
If there are other scenarios for or risks associated with SEO split-testing that you’ve seen in your own work, please share in the comments below.

Running A/B/n experiments (aka “Split Tests”) to improve your search engine rankings has been in the SEO toolkit for longer than many would think. Moz actually published an article back in 2015 broaching the subject, which is a great summary of how you can run these tests.

"What I have found many times is that suggesting to a client they try something on a smaller subset of pages or categories as a ‘proof of concept’ is extremely effective. By keeping a control and focusing on trends rather than whole numbers, I can often show a client how changing a template has a positive impact on search and/or conversions.”
She goes on to reference an existing example that emphasizes an alternate testing tactic other than manipulating templates:
“I'm in the middle of a test right now with a client to see if some smart internal linking within a subset of products (using InLinks and OnCrawl's InRank) will work for them.
Sam Nenzer, a consultant for SearchPilot and Distilled, explains how to know if you have enough traffic for testing: “Over the course of our experience with SEO split testing, we’ve generated a rule of thumb: if a site section of similar pages doesn’t receive at least 1,000 organic sessions per day in total, it’s going to be very hard to measure any uplift from your split test.”
