Firefly Lane and its sequel Fly Away, by Kristin Hannah, were written over a decade ago. But they have come back into relevance after Netflix adapted these novels for a TV series. Although the Netflix series is good, those who have not read Hannah’s books are missing the essence of the stories. Hannah has a knack for a descriptive writing style that draws out the characters through a storyline that is heart-warming and heart-wrenching.

Throughout both books, spanning a period of about thirty years, two girls, Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart, different as day and night, have weathered the storm of friendship, jealousy, anger, hurt, and resentment. Kate has always been in Tully’s shadow, being the shy girl with thick glasses who is lonely and uncool. Tully is the “cool girl” with ambition, brains, and beauty. But these two become best friends forever, known as TullyandKate. As they grow to adulthood, they make different choices in life. Tully chooses to make her career her life’s one true love, while Kate is content to marry, have children, and be a stay-at-home mom, a reflection of her own family as she was growing up. In a sense, Kate’s family adopted Tully and showed her a loving environment, something Tully did not have with her own mom known as Dorothy “Cloud” who was never there for her daughter.

The sequel novel, Fly Away, shows how Kate was the glue that held everyone together. After not able to have Kate around, her family, and her best friend, must navigate their own lives, wondering how they can get along without Kate’s presence. Sixteen-year-old Marah is devastated. Her father, Johnny, strives to hold the family together, but even with his best efforts, Marah becomes unreachable. Nothing and no one seem to matter to her. And Tully has turned to drugs and booze. A tragic accident has Tully facing her past and her pain, as she has visions of her friend, and must decide whether or not life is worth living.

Readers will be touched greatly, something no TV series can encompass. Her books have a way of creeping into people’s hearts and feelings as they navigate the emotional ups and down with the characters.

Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for writing these books?

Kristin Hannah: I started writing these stories in 2006. These are the most autobiographical of my books. I wanted to explore my generation of women: what was it like in high school, college, having an early career, and motherhood. I wanted to show the impact of family and how my mother’s breast cancer affected us.

EC: Are you Kate or Tully?

KH: I am Kate, although I wish I had more Tully in me.

EC: How would you describe Kate?

KH: Serious, level-headed, moral, a straightshooter. She lives too much in her head and does not like to make dangerous choices. I think of her more as a caretaker than a follower.

EC: How would you describe Tully?

KH: Broken and ambitious. She grew up with the feeling that if she is successful and famous, she will be unconditionally loved. I do not believe she is insecure although her past suggests she should be considering she grew up with a mother who seemed not to care or love her.

EC: There is a powerful quote in the book that best describes the relationship between Tully and Kate. Can you explain?

KH: You must be referring to this quote, “That was the thing about best friends. Like sisters and mothers, they could piss you off and make you cry and break your heart, but in the end, when the chips are down, they were there, making you laugh, even in your darkest hours.” Kate knew how broken Tully was and wanted to be there for her. On the other hand, Tully wants to push Kate to get outside of herself and strive for things. But in the end, Kate’s journey in life, her real joy in life was to be a wife and mother. They needed each other, but in different ways. Kate and her family kept Tully human and grounded her, allowing places for Tully to come home to. They had a deep and true relationship throughout their lives, even when they went on different paths and lived in different places.

EC: What about Tully’s mom versus Kate’s mom?

KH: Kate’s mom is the stand in for my mom. A salt of the earth person who is loving and straight forward and strove for both girls to reach big. She was always there for Kate, but was also a little starry eyed around Tully, making Kate a bit jealous at times. Tully’s mom, Cloud or Dorothy is a tragic character. At the very best she is an uncommitted mother and at worse a very bad mom. She was not there to educate, protect, or love her only child.

EC: What about the relationship between Kate’s daughter, Marah, and Tully?

KH: This was another point of contention between Kate and Tully. Kate saw it as her job to raise Marah to be a good moral thoughtful human being and to live a good life. Tully gets to be the aunt who flies in on her private jet. But there’s no doubt about the love these three share; it’s just that love is sometimes bumpy and takes a while to work out.

EC: What was wonderful about these books is how you contrasted a stay-at-home mom versus having a career. It seems the Netflix show missed this important point.

KH: Actually, I don’t agree that the series has missed this point. I think we don’t know yet how much the series will stick to the novel on this storyline. Because Season one only tells about 1/3 of the book, the idea of Kate as an at home hasn’t really come up yet. There’s a lot of story left to see. We haven’t seen Kate as a young mother yet. But I think the series wanted to show that Kate was a talented writer and producer in her own right. She could have gone into the working world and have been very successful. But the choice she made was to be an at home mom. At the end of Firefly Lane as Kate looks back on her life, she is very certain she made the right choice and feels good about it.

EC: Would you say the second book, Fly Away, explores memories, regrets, second chances, forgiveness, and grief?

KH: The first book, Firefly Lane is about finding love in life, and Fly Away is about losing it. Without Kate’s friendship, Tully has to grow up.

EC: Both books delve into the relationship between Kate’s husband Johnny and herself?

KH: They had a true love. It had some miles and bumps in it but in the end, theirs was a great love.

EC: Another contention was how the relationship between Johnny and Kate was portrayed in the series?

KH: The novel is one thing, and the series is another. The series structures the story differently than I did. The novel is chronological in nature; the series runs on three timelines, so people are seeing the story in an order I did not write. I am hopeful that the 2/3 of Firefly Lane still to come to screen will show the depth of the Johnny and Kate’s love affair since this is important to me and my readers. I do like the series and feel that it is very true to the friendship between Johnny, Kate, and Tully, an inseparable trio. The first season explored the friendship. If there is a second season it will hopefully show the love story. I, personally, adore the casting of the show and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

EC: Why did the series have the three different timelines throughout?

KH: If they had made the timeline like the book there would have been a lot of the fourteen-year-olds. I also felt it would have been more ordinary that way. Yes, the series would have been more faithful to the novel, but a series has a life of its own, too. I understand, why readers love the book—I do, too—and honestly, it’s hard to adapt a beloved novel. I think the series did take the material and make a great TV show while still being respectful to the underlying plotline, and the four women who played Kate and Tully are amazing. I am like everyone else who wants a season two because they left it hanging in the middle. Like, you, I am looking forward to a deep focus on a season two that focusses on the Johnny-Kate love story.

EC: Can you give a shout out about your next book?

KH: I have been doing a lot of publicity and the pandemic has knocked me for a loop. I am just now thinking about some things. I had originally seen Firefly Lane as the start of a trilogy. So, I will never say never about writing a third book. I would also like to write Loreda’s story, the daughter in The Four Winds, my current book. But neither will be the next book I write.

My Breast Cancer Scare: Truths or Myths?

Every time I've changed Gynecologists, Breast CancerI filled out the dreaded medical history forms knowing the reaction my new doctor will have once she/he sees that both my grandmothers had breast cancer."Do you examine your breasts often?" "You need to be very careful", "Here put your arms up and let me see" poke poke poke...

Though I am glad for their concern I must admit that it is scary to think that you are considered high risk for breast cancer. In June of this year, I turned 30 and I can't begin to tell you all the weird changes that have been happening to my body. Some are way too weird and personal to mention, but about a month ago I did find a strange mass in my left breast. Now this is not really unusual for me since I normally have quite lumpy breasts, especially as that time of the month gets closer. So I figured it was just my natural lumps just feeling a little extra lumpy and I didn't pay it much mind. Three weeks later however it was still there and even more pronounced. So, to ward off any possibilities that it was my imagination playing tricks on me I asked my mother if she felt anything and she did. I quickly made the appointment to see my gynecologist.

I decided not to become rippled with fear about what the possibilities of an unknown mass in my breast could mean, but my panicky personality got the best of me and at times and I would picture myself losing all my hair which I had been spending so much time and money taking care of, the possibility of not being able to have kids, and worst of all losing my breast which I quickly passified by picturing myself with fake boobs. Vein and shallow!...yes I know. I reprimanded myself for thinking such thoughts and focused on God and life and thinking positive. It may be nothing.

The day of my much anticipated appointment came. As I waited in the examination room for my doctor, I lay on the bed in my robe opened to the front and busied myself with texting and bbm'ing to keep my mind of the negative. Thirty minutes later my doctor walked in with chart in-hand and stated, "What borough do you live in?" I said Queens. She said, "For How long?" Took me a while to think. I was unprepared for those questions. I was expecting something more around "How long have you had the lump?", "Who else in your family has had breast cancer?", "Seen any strange oozing?"

Seeing the confused look on my face, my gynecologist explained that the reason why she asked was because women who have lived in Queens and Long Island all or most of their lives are twice as likely to get breast cancer than women in any other borough in New York City. I was shocked! "I wasn't aware of that at all" I said and told her that I had only been living in Queens for the past 2 years and spent most of my life in the Caribbean. She then began her examination of both my breasts, starting with the right and then the left. She quickly felt the mass as well as another somewhere in the center of my left breast. She had me feel it also and yes! certainly there was something there. Not quite a lump or ball per se but definitely something. She asked me if I drink caffeine. I replied in the affirmative and told her that I had at least one cup a day give and take a few days here and there when I preferred tea. She told me that caffeine has been known to make the breasts lumpy. Again, I was shocked at that.

She also told me that taking 600 mg's of Vitamin E daily will also help prevent breast cancer. Another shocker! She also asked me if I wore wired bras. I told her "All the time" she then went on to say that I needed to get non-wired bras since the wired ones are known to put extra pressure on the glands of the breast and can lead to breast cancer also. Yet another shocker! Breast Cancer

She never once mentioned or even brought up my grandparents, so I volunteered the information just in case she missed it. She then asked me at what age they were diagnosed. I wondered whether it mattered, point is they had it and that makes me high risk! I said one was diagnosed at 84 and another at around 60. She nonchalantly shrugged it off saying "OK they were both past menopausal age". I was like "ok", wondering if that now meant that I am no longer high risk. Talk about confused.

By the end of the examination she explained that though I am too young to have a mammogram because of the density of my breast, that she was scheduling one anyway along with a sonogram just to be on the safe side. My heart was beating as she wrote the referral, still nervous and overwhelmed from the confusing information I had just received as well as this pending mammogram which I had heard such horror stories about. Two days later I showed up for my "mamo" and "sono" and though the doctor said that the tests are never 100% percent accurate, I thank God that the results were negative and showed no abnormality.

A Night Out With The Emperors & Empresses Of 50 YEARS OF FABULOUS by Holden Aguirre

On this crisp fall evening, members of The Imperial Council of San Francisco are out in full regalia, every bead and bauble catching a glimmer from the spotlight. Past Emperors look on as past Empresses perform for a sold-out audience underneath a starlit sky. The evening’s cooler weather doesn’t prevent onlookers from shedding their blankets and puffer jackets to rise from their seats and take part in the fun and frivolity of it all.

“50 YEARS OF FABULOUS,” a feature documentary that chronicles the history of The International Imperial Court System, is screening at Proxy, an outdoor event space in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. The film marks the charitable organization’s 50th anniversary.

Just across the street from tonight’s screening, at Octavia and Gough Street, is Marlena’s Bar. A San Francisco institution now gone, Marlena’s primarily hosted fundraising events for the Imperial Court; in fact, many of the Empresses and Emperors present here tonight graced the bar’s stage at one time or another.

The famed institution’s namesake, also known as the Absolute Empress 25, makes an appearance at tonight’s screening, using the occasion to celebrate her 80th birthday. She performs the Shirley Bassey track “I Am What I Am.”

Marlena’s choice of song truly embodies the spirit of the evening and the film. It’s a night to salute Marlena and the Imperial Court System, two powerhouses who have brought love and inclusion to so many in the LGBTQ community.

A Pictures Worth A Thousand Words

The film opens with a historic photoshoot of all the remaining Emperors and Empresses who comprise The Court.

“I was fascinated by the grandness of it all, and all the good the organization has done,” says Gareth Gooch, a photographer who has captured The Court for the last six years.

Gooch is out shooting The Court again tonight for this special screening and celebration, “I love shooting The Court because people are having fun, and there is a sense of community and family doing it,” says Gooch. “I never realized how important this image would be.”

Gooch moved to San Francisco from London ten years ago. Like so many others before him, The Court welcomed him with open arms and gave him a place to belong.

The Imperial Court System, first known as the Imperial Council of San Francisco, was officially founded in 1965 by José Julio Sarria with the mission to support the LGBTQ movement.

What began as a small, grassroots community-based organization has grown to more than 75 affiliate organizations across the globe, making The Imperial Court System the oldest and largest LGBTQ charitable organization in the world.

Mama José

Sarria was a soldier in the United States Army during World War II before moving to San Francisco in the early 1950s. Soon after he arrived, he began performing as a drag queen at the Black Cat Bar.

It was in these early years that Sarria and his friends began to conjure up stories of their royal lineage. It would be from these performances that the entire Imperial Court System would eventually blossom.

In 1961 Sarria campaigned for a position on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, making him the first openly gay man to run for public office in the history of the U.S. He would lose the race, but his hunger for the voice of the LGBTQ community to be heard would drive him forward.

In 1964 Sarria would proclaim his nobility to the public and declare himself the first Empress of San Francisco. This would serve as a catalyst to the formation of The Imperial Court System. Slowly, this small group of revolutionaries would grow in numbers and The Court would become the fundraising tour-de-force it is today.

Sarria believed that carrying himself with the pomp and circumstance of royalty reflected the pride he had in his sexuality. Instinctively, he knew the projection of respect for himself would garner respect from others. Sarria was able to draw funding to him and with it he built a full-fledged organization from the ground up.

Elections were held regularly and new Empresses were crowned. Rouge, chiffon, glamour and performance made up the arsenal The Court would use to battle the forces that tried to keep the LGBTQ community down.

Sarria ruled over his Court, seeing the LGBTQ community through its heartaches and triumphs, until his death in 2013.

An Epidemic Strikes

In 1983, AIDS grabbed hold of the LGBTQ community in San Francisco, and across the nation. Almost immediately, The Imperial Court System responded to the crisis unfolding before it. The Court system was among the first organizations to go out into the community and raise money for the AEG, the AIDS Emergency Fund.

Empresses would perform in drag nearly everyday and these performances would go on to raise over $200,000. Collective tragedy brought the community closer than ever before.

“When I saw our brothers and sisters dying of AIDS, I knew I had to jump in and do something,” says Angelina Josephina Manicotti, Absolute Empress 44.

The Imperial Court System built the foundation for many of the San Francisco nonprofits, organizations that continue to raise money to fight against HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and homelessness.

“We are out there holding fundraisers for AIDS, breast cancer, whatever we feel we need to do to help our community, that’s what we do,” says Manicotti.

Manicotti is another San Francisco transplant. He moved from Boston after he lost his husband to AIDS. He too found friendship and community in The Court System.

“We give from our hearts and we are family,” says Manicotti. “We continue to teach people that it is great to love one another.”

Finding a new Generation

Surprisingly, even now going into its 55th year, The Imperial Court System remains mostly unheard of by today’s LGBTQ youth, and The Court is struggling to find volunteers to keep the organization afloat.

“There are courts dropping off all over the place in smaller communities,” says Alexis Miranda, Absolute Empress 33 of San Francisco.

Miranda is going into his 23rd year of being an Empress in The Court System. He recalls how important The Court System was in helping the LGBTQ community gain basic civil rights in the 1960s, and later the vital role it played during the AIDS epidemic.

“I was in it at a time when it was crucial and we all came together because we knew we had a job to do,” says Miranda.

Miranda thinks that a perceived lack of purpose and sense of urgency is contributing to the diminishing interest in The Court System among younger LGBTQ folk.

“We have achieved many of our goals, but there are still problems in this world and it’s up to the younger generation to keep The Court going and find a purpose for it,” says Miranda.

Miranda was born and raised in Miami, Florida, but left home at 18 years old to find his purpose in San Francisco. Like his fellow Empress, Manicotti, he found it within The Court System.

“Most everybody in San Francisco has a story similar to mine, whether they are an abused child, a raped child, or a runaway, they got out and searched for a new family,” says Miranda.

Miranda says that if The Court System exists for no other purpose than to help those kids who have no one, that’s reason enough.

“Now there are still some kids, whose families turn them away, but they will end up here and safe with us,” says Miranda.

In light of The Court’s dwindling support, the film hopes to shed light on the importance of The Court System, educate young audiences, and inject new life into the organization.

The Next Chapter

“We have a lot of young people who have seen the film at film festivals and were amazed because they didn’t know half the stuff,” says David Lassman, Executive Producer of “50 YEARS OF FABULOUS.”

Lassman, also known as the 36th Absolute Empress of San Francisco, Chablis, has been involved with The Court System for close to thirty years. He says the film was something he dreamt of making and his goal was always to educate.

“They are going to begin teaching gay history in high schools and this film would be very important to include in the curriculum because we are at time now were the youth can be out and proud, and this film shows how we got there,” says Lassman.

Perhaps that is why so many have gathered, in the chill of this fall evening, to view this historic film five years in the making, to honor the impact The Imperial Court System has had, not only in their lives, but for the entire LGBTQ community.
