DID YOU KNOW: Osamu Tezuka was good friends with other famous mangaka at the time he was active, so it wasn’t uncommon for him to sneak references of their works into his manga. In this panel from Rainbow Parakeet (1981) Tamasaburo is seen dressed as Kitaro from GeGeGe no Kitarō by Shigeru Mizuki. The “Gegege” in GeGeGe no Kitarō can also mean an evil sounding cackling, which is why he’s laughing.

Rainbow Parakeet is also saying “I’m not Iyami!!”. This is a reference to the character of the same name from the manga Osomatsu-kun by Fujio Akatsuka. Both Iyami and Rainbow Parakeet have similar looking hairstyles.

NEWS: The company Medicom Toy has announced officially license Rainbow Parakeet shades. You can buy one of three colors and they will be released in December 2020. Sadly, they will cost 12,000 yen (115 USD) so you’re going to need a little bit of money to buy these.
