I've been trying to find the perfect texting gloves: washable wool, with just the very tips open.

All the fingerless gloves I've seen in stores are too short--not enough finger coverage for me. I've used texting gloves with conductive tips, but now that I have a pure touchscreen phone (no physical keyboard), I'm realising how finicky the conductive tips are--the gloves don't fit me exactly.

I don't know how to knit, and crochet generally doesn't produce a stretchy enough fabric for gloves. There is a side-to-side construction that looks very promising, but I haven't tried it yet.

In the meantime, I've taken to modifying gloves I already own.

The yarn guage in machine-knit gloves is quite fine, probably lace-weight. I used a 1.5mm steel crochet hook and Jawoll Reinforcement Yarn.

Stabilising the cut knit took a while to figure out. Here's what I ended up doing (the best method I've found so far--could probably be improved though):

Identify where you want to cut the tip. You'll be cutting the "V"s.

Using embroidery scissors (sharp tip), snip the first leg off a V. Then tug the second leg to pull the yarn free.

Continue snipping the first leg of a V and tugging the second leg; until you reach the other side.

Using your new yarn: make a slip stitch and insert your hook (as if you were about to start chaining normally).

Now we surface-crochet around the opening, in a place where the fabric still looks stable enough to support crocheting (not the very top, I usually go 2 stitches from the very top):

Insert your hook in the middle of the "V". Yarn-over (inside the fabric), pull up a loop, pull through. Insert hook into the next V; yarn-over, pull up a loop, pull through. Repeat until you get to the beginning. Do not join with a slip stitch.

Now you'll have what looks like the surface (top) of a chain. We're going to work SC into these chains, decreasing every so often because SC is fatter than knit:

Insert hook between the legs of the surface chain, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through. I like to decrease every third stitch (ie: SC, SC, SC2tog). Do not join.

Continue another round of SC into the round you just made. I like to do 2 or 3 rounds of SC total.

Fasten off (I like the invisible join) and weave in ends.

Well, yesterday he was named the musical director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra starting in 2027...the best US orchestra, one of the 10 best in the world, and one that's on a different continent.

This is a completely transparent cash grab...Chicago's orchestra is facing increased financial difficulties, they had an opening, and the hottest young prospect on the list was in town. This has nothing to do with actual music. Let me put it to you this way...Chicago's orchestra brought in just over $20,000,000 last year*. They spent $75,000,000. This hire is to bring in excitement and hype, obviously.

If you remember the note in yesterday's post, 2027 is the same year he's taking over as the full-time conductor of the 2nd best orchestra in the world, the Dutch Concertgebouw. Imagine the uproar if Nick Saban decided to coach Alabama and Michigan in the same year.

That's what Klaus Makela is walking into.

Only he hasn't shown any of the high level stuff required from the podium yet. So instead of imagining Nick Saban coaching Alabama and Michigan in the same year, imagine Lane Kiffin. Or Kliff Kingsbury.

There is no way this ends well. I didn't think it was going to end well when it was just the Concertgebouw involved, but now Chicago at the same time? Fucking absurd.

*They brought in $62,000,000+ from private donors to cover that deficit, including $21mm from a single nonprofit donor...that is asking a LOT from donors, to say the least, and it's not very sustainable. New York is in an even worse spot than Chicago. They needed $80,000,000+ to cover expenses, and only brought in about half of what Cleveland and Chicago did. They just hired a conductor last year with as much hype as Makela (only earned) in Gustavo Dudamel, specifically to shoot some adrenaline into the donors. It likely won't be that successful either, but the music should be great...

Unlike Chicago's nonprofit orchestra, New York's is run by parasites. Chicago's biggest salary? Their musical director/conductor, legendary Riccardo Muti at under $1mm/year. New York's orchestra's biggest salary is for the board's CEO at $1.5mm. Their second highest salary was their CFO. They're heavily reliant on donors, and the best way to appease that group is by hiring a superstar with name cache. This rarely works out the intended way, no matter what walk of life you're looking at.

It's all about the money unfortunately. And the money's looking like it's gonna run out as long as bloated entities add to their own bloat with splashy hires, and without addressing the foundational issues that each face. If you think this isn't terrifying for these groups, five or six years ago SF's orchestra was threatening to turn the Big 5 into the Big 6. Then Dudamel left, then his replacement Salonen straight up quit, and now they're worried they'll even be able to exist.

The belt can be printed in black to save on filament. Or in the same filament that is in the box.  NO Schrödinger's Filament.

This box has a 1.5mm thick wall sto use a minimum amount of filament, so best just to sit on a shelf.  

Not airtight, so I toss in a few desiccant packs, and only store PLA in them.  

There are no clips/hinges holding it together, just gravity and alignment tabs.

No internal structures to accept as many types of spools as possible.  I purchase a large variety of filaments, spools vary from different manufacturers. 

These filament storage boxes are totally original designs, I had to learn CAD skills to design them, they are not modified from others designs.  They are not drying boxes, just filament storage boxes.
