The first meeting between Romeo the wolf and Dakotah. According to Nick Jans, the photographer, Dakotah wrenched free of his grip on her collar and bounded toward Romeo. The two regarded each other before Dakotah returned to Nick and his wife, Sherrie.

Over the course of six years, Romeo frequented the Alaskan town of Juneau, willingly approaching and playing with the residents’ dogs. He was unlawfully shot by poachers in 2009. Today, he lives on through an exhibit at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, a plaque near Nugget Falls, and even has some local drinks and roads named after him. Nick Jans’ book, A Wolf Called Romeo, details his personal experiences and story of the wolf.
