Vettonso x Similar Helmets
SV Germany 2012 x FA Monaco 2013: Gold & Dark Red
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think a lot about Vettonso and their mutual relationship witn gold. They're both golden boys, they're both seen lit gold by the sunshine on many podiums throughout the years, both have worn golden boots, and as you can see here: both have worn golden helmets. The parallels in these particular helmets makes me feel insane. Both are: gold with dark red accents, both have their birthplace's coat of arms(Bergstraße and Asturias), both have team animal motifs, and both have symbols to represent their two championships(You by now know the signifigance of the ones on Fernando's helmet, but I think the ones on Seb's are actually a callback to his Formula BMW days when he used to put the smiley stickers on his car for every win.)
And did you know both of these helmets were designed by the same helmet design company? Yep, both of these are JMD helmets. I know JMD helmets are/were pretty popular, but still, there's something to me about Fernando commissioning the same designer that Seb has been using since he was a literal child. Parallels, am I right?
SV Japan 2010 x FA Japan 2023: White with Black & Red
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haha I remember @protocolseben and I discussing this a bit back in September when Fernando's helmet dropped. I honestly think Seb is such an innovator and trailblazer in terms of helmet design, and you can see his influence in helmet design as recently as this past season. I'm not sure if he was the first ever driver to don a matte white helmet with red accents as a representation of the Japanese flag, but it certainly envoked him in my mind when I saw Fernando's!!
I think Fernando's is pretty similar to all of Seb's 2010-2012 Japan helmets but I like this one the most so! I think if Seb wasn't restrained by the Red Bull logo, he def wouldv'e put the red circle where Nando put his so I think Fernando did a really good job, even if unintentionally, at emulating Seb's sense of design.
SV Singapore 2012 x FA Singapore 2012: Sparkly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I said in the one above, it's crazy how much Seb influenced helmet design. He was pretty much the pioneer of sparkly helmets for Singapore, right? It drives me absolutely insane that there's actually pictures of them together in such similar designed helmets. It's kinda funny actually that even though they're pretty deep in the championship fight at this point, and Seb just got one up on Fernando; Fernando is wearing a helmet that is a direct influence from Seb!!! Is that not insane???
Also, Fernando trying to be camp with trying the now in vogue sparkly Singapore helmet, and Seb accidentally completely blew him out of the water with his outrageous light up LED constellation helmet. But god yeah....to have pics of them in matching helmets from this era particuarly makes me emotional ;;;
SV Hungary 2021 x FA 2022: Pink with Dark Blue
Tumblr media
I really could've picked any of Seb's 2021 helmets, but I thought this one matched the best with Fernando's main 2021 helmet(with the color pallet.) Also one thing, it's crazy how much control BWT has as a sponsor, I don't think I've ever seen another sponsor go so hard at having a chokehold on individuality. I like that we got pink liveries and pink helmets, but I don't think they should have that much control.
I'm almost kinda sad there wasn't any Miami GP in 2021, because I think that was the only unique helmet Fernando had in 2022. But these match pretty well! Pretty in pink!! It's crazy that their parallels in the 2020s are ongoing even before Fernando actually takes over Seb's seat. Thanks BWT I guess?
SV Abu Dhabi 2022 x FA Abu Dhabi 2022: Fernando's Seb Tribute Helmet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND HERE WE HAVE THE PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE!!! The ultimate conclusion, it literally couldn't get better than this!! This is still unbelievable, like how is this an actual thing that happened!? Fernando intentionally branding his helmet, the only symbol of individuality in F1, with his rival's flag colors, HIS FLAG!!!!! Not to mention the literal "Vettono Best Moments" collage he posted alongside it....and the hand-holding....and everything that happened with them at Abu Dhabi 2022....
But god, after years of incidentally making parallel helmet designs, Fernando decided to officially tie the knot of the red string of fate, and make a helmet directly referencing Seb's. I think it's funny because as I said with two of the previously mentioned ones, those Fernando designs are pretty much inspired by Seb's, and here he is openly making one directly inspired by Seb. I don't really have words for how this actually makes me feel because it's just. Yeah. The most open and clear declaration of love and respect and admiration one could ever make. TO ME.
#all of my posts subheading should be: 'its probably not that deep BUT-'#i can't believe ive made two deeply researched and beloved posts in a row one day after the other#posts sponsored by: 12 am red bull consumption. my all-consuming devotion and love for vettonso. and my unwillingness to do schoolwork#i mean i felt a lot of emotions and had fun making it but like. hey. could you put this effort into school?#anyways feeling deeply emotionally affected about helmets and their symbolism#i think in the entirety of f1 seb and fernando are two of the most dedicated and passionate about helmet designs and symbolism?#so this post is very special to me :] helmet fuckers unite <3#again: they say they aren't friends and don't share any hobbies and im just staring at them like YOU IDIOTS!!!#its just that spongebob meme of him pointing out the trashcans. like guys. be fr rn. you totally share hobbies#both like helmet design. paddel and pingpong. sustainability. cars. racing. european football. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON#well im glad they swapped helmets at some point(i think nando gave seb two pretty old ones as well. now thats dedication!)#if they werent cowards i bet they couldve also had a 5+ hour long discussion about helmet design ;;;;;;#thinking also about how fernando has one of seb's in his museum >:) but if only it were one of the ones on this list. sigh.#normal posts that catie normally makes in a normal fashion#well lmk if theres any other vettonso helmets you think are similar!!! im pretty blind to seb helmets that arent rbr era tbh#sebastian vettel#fernando alonso#f1#formula 1#vettonso#we do a little bit of f1

New look, same story
Hey folks! Did you enjoy the memory lane posts? I know I did! Before we jump back into the story, I want to give you a heads up. For the TL;DR folks, I'm rebranding The Piersons and Friends, so be on the lookout for new banners, colors, etc.
For those who enjoy my thought process, board my train of thought under the cut. (woo wooooo!)
A year or two ago, I gave my blogs one cohesive look. I wanted to brand myself! So I made this banner and have been using the colors and fonts from it for everything.
Tumblr media
In the spirit of rebranding, I also remade the banners for PnF to match this new style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recently, I realized this was a mistake. I make different banners for my stories to give them their own identities. Changing PnF's assets to match the blogs essentially took away its identity, and that's probably why I've felt a bit unsettled when looking at it lately; it didn't work for me anymore. I needed to change it, but to what?
This story is a rotation, but it's also the story of a family, the Piersons. That's why I used trees in the previous banner. The tree also reinforces the organic feel I want. The story is funny sometimes, but it's not a comedy. It's sometimes dramatic, but it's not a soap opera. It's everything all at once and flows in and out of various emotions seamlessly--organically!--which is why script fonts work well for the title. Looking back at old banners, I had those elements and didn't even realize what they meant and how well they worked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was clear I needed to go back to my roots with the tree and script font, so I set out to make something new. I also needed to move away from the black and yellow. Even though I could think hard and come up with some deep, philosophical reason for why I use those colors, frankly, there is no reason. I was new to storytelling on Tumblr at the time, and I just did what I saw other people doing. Also, I didn't have the design knowledge I have now and was just winging it.
Black doesn't convey organic according to color theory, so I ditched it, made white my primary neutral, and introduced green, which just so happens to be Kameron's favorite color! I suppose, theoretically, we can pay homage to him for generations after he's gone, but I'm sure this story won't be around that long. I also wanted to make the banners more modern to match the present-day setting. After trying a LOT of different designs, this is what I came up with!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know, I know. "But, Jess! Where's the tree???" It's there! I promise lol. It's just very blurred and covered in bokeh. I think it works for the modern style. It still feels very organic to me, so it's working.
I added the characters' names to the banner because I think it will help new people who begin reading in the middle.
So what do you think??? Did I accomplish my goals? Does it work for you?
My design brain tells me I should go ALL the way with this branding thing and change my dialogue typeface to the sans serif one I'm using for the subheading. But, a. it only comes in regular, thin, and bold, and not having italics is problematic for me (see what I did there lol), and b. Myriad Pro is perfect for what we do because it's clean, readable, and has multiple fonts in its family. I experimented with green text, but yellow just works better. Honestly that's how I started using yellow in the first place. But anyway, that's my announcement! I hope you enjoy the new hotness!

Tips for University Freshmen | Part No. #1
Hello and welcome to EducateALlama! I would like to personally congratulate you on your acceptance to university as this is a huge step toward achieving your goals. If you are the first person in your family to further your education, I applaud you for taking a leap to educate yourself. And if you’re continuing the tradition and following the footsteps of your parents, siblings, cousins, etc., I also applaud you for doing so. Education is the most important aspect of our lives; understanding the world around you is crucial as it allows you to make rational judgements. Now, before I continue, if you haven’t read my first post titled « Welcome to EducateALlama », I talk a little bit about myself, the purpose of my posts, and the difference between college and university (from a Canadian’s perspective). Now, without further ado, let’s get started:
TIP NO. #1: Ask yourself why you’re going to University
The first tip seems odd but it’s important to identify the reasons and remember the reasons through this journey of yours. I want you to pause and list three reasons why you decided to further your education. If this is your destiny and is something that you want, then you should have at least three reasons listed in five seconds or less. If you have to think about why you’re here, maybe you should consider taking a sabbatical year (aka gap year). In a nutshell, a sabbatical year is when you take a year off before going to school (or work) to basically figure things out like what do you want to do with your education? Is the academia path your destiny? Perhaps you can take this year off to volunteer or save as we all know university is crazy expensive. If you want to know, I took a year off to figure out what I want to do, where I want to study and to ultimately save up for university. I’m not going to dive too deep into this topic as I will be making a post about it soon (probably after this). So, keep a look out for that!
Now, going back to the first tip, once you identified at least three reasons, remember them. It’s okay if your reasons changes in the future. But for now, just remember them as there will be times you want to give up, walk out, sleep, or go home. #BeenThereDoneAllThat.
TIP No. #2: Addressing mental health
This is the most important - I should probably change this to Tip No. #1, but since I’m a lazy MF I’ll just leave it. Addressing mental health is important. Your health comes first before anything. But do not use your health as an excuse to avoid your academic responsibilities. AKA don’t say, « Oh, I need to rest for my mental health as I was in class all day » when in reality, you just don’t want to do your reading assignments.
Most universities will have a reach out program where you can talk to a counselor at your school (I don’t know if it’s free or not, you have to check it out yourself!). If not, you can talk to a professor you feel comfortable with, your parents, peers, etc. You need to know that you are not going through this alone.
TIP No. #3: Organization and planning
Organization and planning are key for academic success. The day you get your syllabus (which for those who don’t know, a syllabus is a student’s holy grail, aka a document, that outlines procedures, policies, and most importantly, due dates and readings - if applicable), write down everything from reading assignments to assessment dates (midterms, final exams, quizzes, etc.) in  a planner or in your phone, whichever suits you best. I prefer to use Google Calendar as I don’t need to purchase a planner - ‘ya boy just saved ya a few dollars, thank me later.
TIP No. #4: Start and don’t procrastinate
Easier said than done, amirite? We’ve all been a victim to the ol’ Mr. Procrastination. However, we can rise from the Valley of Endless-tasks-that-will-eventually-stress-us-out-even-more-if-we-leave-it. By organizing yourself and planning ahead, you’re able to allocate times to start and complete assignments before it’s due. And hey - if you’re done early, maybe you can ask your professor or TA (teacher’s aid/assistant) if you can submit it early or have them provide feedback.
Remember: The sooner you get it done, the less you have to worry about.
TIP No. #5: Addressing your professor and email etiquette
Most people don’t know this and during the first week, one of my professor was furious that a student addressed him as mister. He also went off to say that us millennial don’t know email etiquette.
I will summarize all info below:
University Students:
If your instructor...
A. Has a PhD (doctorate degree): they are addressed as Dr., Professor then their last name. Instead of professor, you can use prof for short, but I’d steer from addressing your prof as « prof » as some will find that offensive and lazy that you can’t say the word in its entirety. I only use prof when I’m talking about my professor to my peers.
B. Has a master’s degree: They are addressed as Instructor then their first and last name. Some will ask that you say their last name (ex. Instructor John Doe or Instructor Doe)
C. Sessional instructor: it depends - some will say that they prefer Dr/Professor, others will say instructor.
NEVER ADDRESS A UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR AS MR/MS/MISS - unless they say you can.
College Students:
For the most part, you can address your instructor as instructor, Mr/Ms/Miss, or Professor/Dr.
When in doubt, just ask. It doesn’t hurt to ask how they would like to be  addressed.
Email:
I’ve hyperlinked an article to the subheading « Email » that explains how to properly send an email.
Since this post is getting a little too long, I decided I will do this in parts. Stay tuned fellow Llamas!
Sincerely,
EAL

Zoo 3.01
I am rusty and out of practice so bear with me, especially since I spent 2 hours after watching just basically keyboard smashing and yelling "I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING THAT HAPPENED."
Anyway, today's review format is subheaders with bullet points that are really more like single-idea paragraphs and only get longer as I go. This review is also based on my live-viewing notes and not fact-checked with a second watch.
Plot Partners: Abe / Dariela & Suspicious Clem
Abe became a doctor? Dariela has sketchy contacts Abe can't know about? They are kick-ass parents on top of all that, despite their own crappy childhoods?? I have no idea what's going on but I'm excited.
Is anyone going to explain how some dogs are apparently unaffected by the mutation or...? Is it because doggos are so Good and Pure?
What is this clumsy retcon that Clementine was obsessed with babies/dolls? She tried to take like 10 stuffed animals and zero dolls with her when they left Boston in season 1. I mean I guess she did risk her life to save a baby from murder crows, but... Speaking of which, looks like season 3 will finally be the year nobody has to rescue a baby after its mother is brutally swarmed to death!
Hot Rugged Action Hero Jackson (& Friends)
Hey so listen I'm going to need you to stop force feeding me this relationship because I am still not there yet. Maybe when I am there, I will enjoy the fact that you threw like 5 different types of my favorite shippy scenes into one episode, but for now I'm saying things like "Ctrl+Alt+Save this kiss for when I care."
I am super excited that Jackson can control lions With His Mind, though. Tell me more.
And give me ALL of the Primeval monsters. That prehistoric rhino thing was my 2nd favorite part of the episode. (and to be clear: when i say Primeval, I am referencing the awesome British TV show and its little Canadian sibling, not just an adjective)
Plot Partners: Jamie and/or Logan
I can't believe Logan is managing to annoy me even more now that he has hair.
This skulking loner Sarah Walker version of Jamie is not really doing anything for me, so if we could bring her warmer side back ASAP that'd be cool. (sorry fandom. please don’t throw garbage at me. /Pam Beesly voice.)
Although I do sort of like that she re-purposed Mitch's lab into her own computer science-y lab. That's something we should probably write stories about. Speaking of...
Backstory Tentpoles a.k.a. Fanfic Prompts
I could let you claim that Jamie banged Logan at some point in the last 10 years, or I could just go "haha cool I guess we're calling that wilderness trek and about 7 days on the plane dating now" and speak no more of this evil.
I love that it sounds like Jamie and/or the Ragtag Band Of Failed Heroes got to keep hold of Clementine for 2 or 3 years, at least, before she apparently got ripped away and spirited off by Max. I will actually die of pain right now if I try to even imagine what that change was like, but it's gonna be gold for someone to dig into. Several someones, actually; there is plenty of room.
Speaking of things that will make me die of pain if I try to think about them: Jamie going on multiple expeditions over the years to try and find him.
Particularly the one where she finds his glasses.
His bloodstained glasses.
#HELP THE DYING IS STARTING
F YEAH ALPHA SHIP
Actual reaction to That Scene: *rolling my eyes* "Jamie has all the opportunity in the world to meet more terrible men" scene right on cu- WHAT, WHAT THE JIMINIY JIGGERS IS GOING ON / NO NEVER MIND I DON'T CARE AND DON'T NEED CONTEXT.
I have too many feelings about this so mostly Imma spend them on other peoples' posts and/or gifsets, but my heart is in roughly 9000 pieces as it finally dawns on me that this being Mitch's dream = Mitch comforting himself with Jamie telling him it's going to be okay and she's going to find him = can somebody please call all the ambulances
...also I keep looking at the deep and somewhat disfiguring scars he’s got, and wondering how Jamie might react to them. These are significantly different from the usual barely-there scars fictional characters fret about; these are the kind of scars that force you to confront exactly what kind of nightmare horror pain this person went through and how maybe it's even worse than you ever pictured.
Billy Burke Proving Why I Spend Every Autumn Transitioning Out of Zoo By Tracking Down His Other Work
I am running out of brainpower and have none left to process this plot, so I will just say: as much as I hate that Mitch is surrounded by strangers upon waking up, and suspicious strangers at that, it is kind of amazing to see him like this. It's Mitch, but it's Mitch stripped of all snark and the command he usually has of any given situation, even when he's just blustering his way through it. It is all kinds of painful to see him confused, mistrustful, frustrated by his inability to communicate or even really understand what's going on.  Mitch looking this lost and withdrawn into mental retreat is quite a gut-wrench.
(it's also really good mental fodder for hospital fic. I'm just sayin'.)
My Favorite Sideshow: Mushy Father/Daughter Moments
So...that girl with Mitch definitely looks more like Young Clem, which is the only consolation prize I have for losing our amazing original actress, and it would line up with Max sequestering her away and/or being involved with shadowy forces. But it would be interesting if they're setting up Badass Clem to LOOK like she's a sketchy Clementine imposter, but actually be the real girl who is angry and embittered by her circumstances, while IADG seems more than capable of making up fake nonsense to manipulate Mitch into giving up info.
That said, my tiny human heart is not big enough to hold the amount of pain there would be if the first thing Mitch found comfort in upon regaining consciousness turned out to be a lie. I need him to recognize his own kid. That bowed head / forehead nudge killed me even more than the dream sequence.
What's REALLY going to upset me is if one of the girls is like a...clone of some kind, so that they're both technically Clem, but not. Or one is part-hybrid. I feel strongly like part-human hybrids are gonna be a Thing. (Mind you, I usually am very wrong when I start predicting.)
tl;dr Mitch + Being A Mess Of Emotions About His Daughter is my actual favorite thing about this show.
In conclusion: I still have no idea what’s going on but I am excited to see the rest.

The complete guide to optimizing content for SEO (with checklist)
Efficient material marketing is an automobile for modern SEO.Just as wheels
without an engine leaves you pedaling, material without an SEO technique cannot keep up in a digital marketplace. And simply like an engine with no wheels, SEO without content is a shiny machine that goes nowhere.Content requirements SEO
to stand apart in the din of mediocre post blocking the internet these days, and Google has stated that a person of the top three ranking elements for organic search is "material. "But exactly what does that indicate? Not any content, certainly. Sadly, online search engine are not giving out checklists for"top quality material,"and they probably never ever will. That implies it's up to those of us who geek out on this example to study search engine result, mine Google Analytics and produce enormous spreadsheets that we pretend to be tired by but secretly like-- all to bring you(and ourselves, who are we kidding?) a thorough guide to producing "high-quality"SEO content.Step 1: SEO your material strategy A lot of online marketers are still waiting till completion of content production to generate SEO as a
advertising tool. They try to figure
out exactly what they've just created, so they can plug in a few keywords and links. But a reliable content marketing technique need to start with keyword and user intent research study. As soon as you understand what questions your audience is utilizing, and exactly what kind of material they are searching for, you can create a material strategy that addresses their specific concerns and helps move them through the funnel. is based on an understanding of your audience, in addition to keyword and user intent research study. Use your audience's language, and offer the information they're really looking for. assists the reader complete one specific job. Long material (1,000+words)tends to rank much better in organic results, in part since it is comprehensive. That said, remain on task and don't let the material lose focus. features a luring call to action or a clear next action. When you understand your readers and their buyer journeys, your material can point them to more of what they want.Step 2: Design good material Great UX readies SEO. When users are engaged, they take in more
content, communicate with it and share it. From the overarching structure to the information of the layout, make sure you are designing great content. There are plenty of viewpoints about which qualities make material"good"-- or
" sticky" or" believed leadership."They are all worthy factors to consider, and every piece of material must cover a minimum of a few: Simple/Clear/Coherent Unforeseen Concrete Credible/Valid/Experienced Emotional Amusing Inspiring Educational Appropriate Deep/Thorough Practical Novel/Unique(in value, not simply in content)Trustworthy And as you continue to develop content, keep your audience in mind: you are composing for people, so browse engines can likewise understand-- not vice versa. is composed to its audience, not your peers. Make sure the language is neither too simple nor loaded with
industry jargon. is shareable
. Take a step back and ask yourself
if you would share it-- and, if so, could you
?(i.e., are social sharing buttons
readily available?)can be scanned quickly. Usage brief paragraphs, callouts,
strong text, bullet points
, numbered lists, quotes and so on to make the text easy on the eyes and easy to digest rapidly. usages strong titles and H1s. Produce enticing, actionable titles that utilize keywords strategically and naturally. CoSchedule has a good headliner analyzer tool if you require assistance here. features perfect results, typical objections and/or timespan in subheaders
. Anticipate the audience's hopes, worries and issues. is much better than existing SERP winners. Spy out the competitors. Review the pages that are currently ranking well for target keywords and ask yourself if your material is better. Ensure it's better.Step 3: Develop appropriate material Is there anything as disturbing as a typo in an otherwise great piece of material? No. There isn't. While there is no proof, at this time, that grammar is a ranking signal, it's a UX/credibility concern.Additionally, pointing out sources and connecting to other authorities readies technique, however it's likewise good SEO-- those outbound links demonstrate to browse engines that you understand your things, and that you're associating with the ideal crowd. is totally free of spelling and grammatical errors.
Proofread. And then have another person check. (No joke, my mom sent me a screen shot of a grammatical error in a Propecta Facebook post recently. Those are individuals you require in your life.)links to good, reliable sources
. Wikipedia counts as an excellent source to Google, no matter what your high school social research studies teacher stated. has actually been fact-checked. Even if everyone else quotes that figure, it doesn't indicate you should, unless
you can find the source.Step 4: Inspect your keyword use You began with keywords and user intent research study, naturally, so this is not about finding out which keywords apply to the piece of content in concern. This is about examining how that keyword is being utilized in stated content. It's real that keyword stuffing is very, very out. It was never cool in the first place, but now-- thanks to Google-- it's likewise ineffective (if not unsafe). It's also true that Google is extremely savvy about keywords. None of that, however, indicates that keywords are "dead."It simply means SEO needs to utilize them much better.( It is also worth keeping in mind that users look for keywords. Google is wise enough to recognize common synonyms, but when a user key ins a keyword, he/she is searching for that bolded keyword on the SERP.)is not stuffed loaded with the main keyword. There's no real mathematics for this. A great way to imagine is to utilize the "Discover"function in your document and browse the keyword. If it
looks oversaturated, begin plugging in some synonyms. organizes thematic subsections by main related keywords. Google is getting better and better at comprehending related terms. Do not be afraid of it. makes natural usage of keywords and variants in content.
Don't overthink it. Use synonyms, abbreviations, plurals and so on like a regular human being. makes natural use of keywords in image text. Image titles, alt text and captions are tactical places for detailed language. Don't require keywords, but do utilize them as suitable. makes natural use of keywords in titles.
Write for individuals initially, however if you can keep that target keyword toward the front of your title and/or H1, do so. makes natural usage of keywords in the URL. This should not be too hard if you have actually used it in the title. makes
natural use of keywords and versions in the first 100 words.
Do not be awkward, but do, as much as possible, lay all your cards on the table as rapidly as possible.Bonus round: Some technical SEO material problems Technical SEO is, mostly, a completely different conversation. A lot of technical SEO elements are sitewide problems that have to be audited, and the important ones cleaned up, before you begin trying to enhance content. There are, nevertheless, a few technical considerations relating specifically to private content, and I would be remiss to ignore them: Material loads rapidly. Three seconds or less is exactly what you're dealing with. Make certain the images and other media files are n't slowing down the content's performance. Material plays well on mobile. This will not likely be an issue if the site utilizes responsive style, which most do, but make certain kinds and CTAs are tappable
inthe material, images are center-aligned and so on. Page is included on the site's XML sitemap. Help Google find and understand the content! Internal links point to the
content. Ensure they matter and they utilize keyword-based anchor text as possible/appropriate. URLs are short. Top-level pages
have much shorter URLs. Position 1 URLs typical 59 characters long. Go forth and produce'premium content'They say beauty remains in the eye of the beholder, however they
have never ever attempted to rank material in organic search. The truth is, for our functions, beauty remains in the eye of the target market-- as translated by a maker learning program at Google.Fortunately, RankBrain, although still relatively vague and ambiguous, is at least pretty constant. That means we can Google countless terms, study tens of countless outcomes, A/B test our own hypotheses, and create a list of attributes that are most likely lovely to Google-- 77 qualities, to be exact.Start your SEO
content journey by bringing the two together from the beginning. If you are dealing with a material marketing strategy that did not start with SEO research study, begin again. When the wheels and the engine start together, you set out on a much smoother ride. Some opinions expressed in this post may be those of a guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land. Personnel authors are

American Shithole #2 — How Deep Is Our Shithole?
by Eric Wilson
Ugh, what a week already.
I have entertained adding the occasional silver lining/ray of sunshine to a column that could likely depress more often than elate. This would require a subheading. American Shithole: Turds of Wisdom, or American Shithole: Kernels of Truth, perhaps.
Or, American Shithole: I Just Can’t, Today.
If I do include any rose-tinted hangover editions, they will be few and far between, because this country is a hot mess on a lost weekend. America has tossed its keys in the sewage drain, taken its shirt off, and is wandering around a Walmart somewhere with one flip-flop on, looking for paint thinner.
What’s worse is that when we survive this administration, a lot of our issues will still be here. They were here long before too many of us got drunk on fear, populism and stupidity.
So I watched the State of the Union, and if you had happened to be listening from the next room, you would have been privy to cackles, expletives, and you might have even heard an eye-roll. The President did actually address a few of the following issues that ultimately he will do nothing about:
Our infrastructure is indeed collapsing, as it has been for decades. Our interstates and bridges are in dangerous disrepair. When the Eisenhower administration — a republican administration mind you — set in motion a tax plan requiring the wealthy to shoulder significant expense for new infrastructure, the plutocrats in response undermined middle-class and poor families for three generations; in what has become an ongoing effort to maintain a conservative voting bloc by pitting Americans against each other.
We haven’t adequately invested in infrastructure since.
Public schools have been shortchanged at every turn by the ruling class. It only requires a reporter to shove a microphone into the face of a Trump supporter for evidence of an undervalued education. Or, if you are feeling particularly courageous, a Jimmy Kimmel street interview.
The only true danger to any aristocracy has always been an educated and well-informed populace. We’ve had nearly three generations now of Americans voting against their own self-interests, and the dumbing-down of rural America in particular seems to be worsening.
Healthcare is a joke without a punchline. If keeping the citizenry ignorant isn’t sufficient, or if you can’t keep them all dumb enough, then keep them scared for their lives. Nothing works better — if scaring the shit out of people is your intent — than the indifferent bureaucracy of insurance companies and America’s special brand of super-capitalism strip-mining human misery for market value.
The real danger posed by Obamacare is that it offered hope to the hopeless. It is as if the healthcare available prior to the Affordable Care Act — basically unaffordable access to bottom-of-the-barrel health services, and the crippling debt that still somehow followed — was expected to be taken as a blessing, a kindness from our benevolent benefactors, and not an insidious effort to leverage struggling Americans into quiet submission.
Powerful people like the Koch brothers were very angry that the poor and needy of our country were able to taste the merest hint of true freedom that Universal Healthcare would provide.
This too is the ultimate function of student loans, where America stands again as an outlier, saddling our best and brightest young people with an albatross right out of the gate. The only purpose of these enormous debt burdens on our youth is to create leverage and fear.
Speaking of scholastic environments, as of January 23rd we have had eleven school shootings this year. This year that started, this month. Eleven. That’s more than the rest of the western world’s countries combined. Let that sink in a moment — if anything can sink in amidst this ceaseless maelstrom of fear, greed, lies, horrific violence, and profound stupidity.
“Where’d you get your figures, Librul?”
We have access to data for school shootings worldwide, for one, because these atrocities rarely happen anywhere else — I am assuming this is because in non-shithole countries, the images of your own dead children in classrooms is so fucking horrific, people actually do something about it.
Or we could just keep flooding our communities with bump stocks and military-grade assault weaponry, because you know, freedom.
We are one of the only western countries where opioids are only available from a physician, and somehow unrelated, we are the only country suffering from a catastrophic opioid addiction crisis. A crippling death sentence that has no geographical, class or racial barriers has already shuffled a few of my favorite artists off this mortal coil. I guess that song I wrote for Tom Petty “Running Down a Fentanyl Prescription” will have to remain unrecorded gold.
The situation is already so toxic in some smaller communities that literally no family has been left unchallenged and unchanged. Why are rural communities hit hardest? Infrastructure, in part. Everything is connected.
Drug distributors that saturated this small West Virginia town with 20 million painkillers probably sleep like kittens.
Weaving like a drunk on a highway throughout this quagmire of poverty, ignorance, poor health, drug addiction and despair, we have our embarrassing legacy of racism and prejudice. Thriving, it seems, in the basements of weary mothers everywhere. Along with a disgusting resurgence of misogyny that I was not expecting either — certainly not from those significantly younger than I am. Throat-punching these mongoloid fucks should be considered civic duty.
And then we have men, some once-revered, that turned out to be rapists — that have in some cases, systematically abused power and position over the course of decades. If the situation were normal, I would probably take weeks to unpack how disappointed; disgusted I feel by Charlie Rose, and others I admired. Or even linger over the Schadenfreude I have experienced for shit-bags I never liked in the first place. I’m looking at you, Matt Lauer.
We just don’t have the time to reflect, not these days.
Ultimately, in Machiavellian fashion, moderating and doling out most of this misery we have the billionaires, whose lives are so far removed from anything remotely representing normal human existence, it begs the question: who are these greedy fucking assholes? In my opinion, billionaires are the real dead weight for humanity. Dead weight created in a soulless economic construct gone haywire.
A report in Newsweek recently shared some numbers that I find most troubling for a group of people I already despise. If the billionaires of the world were to share just 1/7th of what they earned this past year — not the billions they already horde, just 15% or so of what they accumulated on top of that this year — extreme poverty and starvation would end.
Instead, the Koch brothers will invest more than they ever have before in an attempt to win 2018 elections for the republicans that they have already pocketed long ago. All just to stay as rich as possible. That is what this has always been about. This is about obscenely overvalued gluttons staying obscenely overvalued, no matter the human suffering.
We — and by “we” I mean those of us that are influenced by generosity and compassion, and some sense of fucking decency — must truly resist. We must find ways to rise above our own instincts as Americans; with our seemingly ingrained worship of the ultra-rich. Look, I don’t want to have to keep breaking it to you, but these guys are fucking assholes.
These (547 or so) comically overvalued and overpowered individuals aren’t all evil, but the damage done by the worst among them (Koch Brothers, Mercers, etc.) is incalculable. There is also the stifling effect of having that much value out of circulation; even if they weren’t guilty of tampering with American politics — creating the Tea Party, for example — their greed manifested is strangulating the pursuit of happiness for nearly everyone else.
On top of the heap we have Trump — dumbest, luckiest douchebag of them all. Faux billionaire, if there ever was one. The Giant Orange Idiot is nearly universally despised by friend and foe alike — with the notable exception of his base, that bastion of intelligence worried about brown people coming to take their dirt piles. Hey Cletus, no one is coming for your fucking shitty dirt pile in Bumblefuck Nowhere, U.S.A.
Trump also has the support of the evangelicals, who as I have stated, are one rung above the flat-earthers in problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities.
If we continue down this path, the United States is in danger of becoming this century’s answer to Nazi Germany, or at least an oligarchical, nationalist, modern-day version of it. And if you think that’s bombastic, then I suggest you review your history books, and perhaps take another look around you right now. This hollowed-out husk of an American Dream — is ripe to turn dystopian nightmare — and that is something to which I hope we will not silently bear witness.
Before this starts reading like a manifesto, or a really painful civics report, I think it’s time to wrap this one up. What can I say? Being forced to watch Trump speak for 90 minutes makes me chatty. Or barfy. Yes, by Thursday’s posting, I am sure that the memo has already blown up.  Be strong my beautiful brothers and sisters. Find your line, and fucking hold it.
I would like to close with a pleasant thought that came to me a year ago now:
There will come a day, perhaps you’ll be on a date or spending the evening with a good friend, you’ll be enjoying a quiet exchange over a comforting meal, and the conversation will turn. One of you will inhale sharply and say, “wow, we haven’t heard that name in a while.”
A moment of silence may pass with reflection. You’ll both sigh, perhaps grin, and that grin might broaden into a smile.
I don’t know what year it’s going to be. I don’t know if I will live to see it, but the collective ‘we’ are going to have this moment. It’s going to be a magical moment.
I hope this thought brings you some comfort, my fellow Americans.
Stay tuned next week for American Shithole: Skid Marks of Justice?

What is keyword clustering, and who cares? (Hint: you should!)
Are you still optimizing for “keyword strings”? You are not alone!
The problem is, the industry is moving on, so don’t fall behind and learn to implement a smarter approach to keyword research: Keyword clustering.
Single-keyword SEO has been a staple for a long time. Remember how we used to have a separate page for every tiny variation of a keyword? At that time we’d optimize for [restaurants in Italy] and [Italy restaurants] using two different pages, one for each keyword string. It is how we all probably got our start and saw (and still see) our traffic flourish and ranking climb.
It was a fun time, but deep down I am glad it has passed.
Google’s search algorithm has outgrown that method of optimization. Sure, it may still work. In fact, most of the newest and most popular WordPress SEO plugins are still based on that “single-string” method, so most bloggers rely on it. But the more sophisticated algorithms expanded beyond the scope of a single-topic focus.
Even keyword research that finds the perfect sweet spot between popularity and saturation is no longer a guarantee for success. In-depth content covering a variety of related concepts and entities is winning more and more often these days.
More and more we are seeing the use of keyword clustering from sites that are making it beyond the scope of mediocre search results and traffic margins. In other words, the big guys are bringing out the big guns, and we should be following in their footsteps.
What is this keyword clustering?
OK, so this isn’t really new. I for one described a tactic of keyword grouping back in 2007. Back then, however, I didn’t know the term “keyword clustering”, and used Excel instead of much easier tools.
A better way of explaining it would be that it is gaining traction with more people (and growing buzz terms around itself).
So what is it?
Simply put, it’s keyword grouping categorized by (1) a common secondary keyword modifier which is how most tools approach it or (2) Google’s search engine results similarity (which is something I’ll describe below).
At the heart of it, keyword clustering is what it sounds like: you are taking relevant keywords and clustering them together into groups. Those groups work together to give your website a more thoroughly categorized theme, which in turn helps to establish its purpose and attract those crawlers that tell Google that page is one they should bump up the list.
It’s easier when you look at an example
Let’s say your core term is healthy diet plan, which is pretty tough to compete for. So you run it through keyword research tools and come up with the list of hundreds of “long tail” “keyword strings” that make your head spin:
How on earth are you going to optimize your content for all of these phrases?
Don’t worry, figuring this list out doesn’t have to be a manual process. There are some keyword grouping tools out there that make it much easier to get through.
I personally use Serpstat because it provides one of the best SEO tools in the market in my opinion. [Disclaimer: Because I blog on them so much, Serpstat reps approached me and gave me free access to their PRO tools]. However, other providers such as Wordstream and Spyfu offer keyword grouping tools, so choose the option which fits best with your existing tools and workflow.
With Serpstat, you can copy-paste the keywords into their clustering tool and it groups the list for you:
It is a keyword clustering automated system that does a lot of the work for you. But unlike most other tools, it doesn’t bog you down with centralized terms that impact your clusters.
Instead of simply grouping the keywords by the centralized term (like most clustering tools do, and like I did in my Moz article from 2007 referenced above), Serpstat also uses their own “connection strength” metric which looks at how many identical URLs those multiple search queries trigger.
You can choose between soft and hard clustering to determine how closely related terms should be within one group – a very unique approach to clustering keywords. To get into more detail about how the tool works, read this article describing their method.

How should you optimize your content now?
Let’s make it clear: No, you don’t need to take one of these groups and fill your content with all the keywords from within it.
What you can do instead: Look at those keywords and take main concepts to cover in your content. Each group can become your separate guide, or it can be a subheading within a more comprehensive article.
Keyword clustering isn’t the optimization technique, nor does it bring anything fundamentally new into a SEO strategy. You still need to create high-quality well-researched content targeting users’ demand.
What keyword clustering does is help you make sense of your keyword strings and turn them into meaningful concepts.
How can this method help me?
Any time you cluster your keywords, you are improving your SEO, period. Instead of trying to compete with a single phrase, you will be targeting keywords page by page based on a collection of phrases for each theme.
How this helps you is pretty obvious: better ranking and more traffic. Specifically, it is better ranking and more traffic against competitors who are almost certainly already using this method of SEO, which is one of the reasons they are doing better than you are.
This also diversifies your tactics. Where once consistency in a single model was key, things have changed. That more sophisticated algorithm mentioned above means better, more complex strategies are needed to keep up.
My favorite way to put it: Grouping keywords helps you get a better grasp of your niche. It forces you to cover more concepts and answer more questions within one page than you’d think of without going through the process, so the most important benefit of keyword clustering is that it makes your content (and hence) your site better, more useful, more trustworthy and more comprehensive.
