Hello! I came across your quiz, I like your recommendation and plan to buy the book later! However I'm curious— what's your all time favourite? And what book you love, not because of the plot or character, mainly because the words/sentences are beautifully written? Thank you!
EDIT: i thought i posted this ages ago but turns out it's just been sitting in my drafts so sorry about that anon
omg this is the best ask ive ever gotten and also the hardest to answer 😭 i think favorite of all time is probably annihilation by jeff vandermeer which is the first book of the southern reach trilogy—that trilogy is my fave of all time if that counts as a book lol. it’s so literary and gorgeous and the characters are so real and the plot draws you in etc etc etc…i think about it all the time it changed my life
this WAS on the quiz but another country by james baldwin is SO beautifully written. i think even if it didnt also have a lot of brilliant and poignant things to say i’d still have loved it. confessions of the fox by jordy rosenberg also gets an honorable mention for this!!
but honestly when it comes to novels im a plot and character and concept girly thru and thru, but i also love poetry so thats my go to for beautiful sentence construction! my fave poets are louise gluck, kaveh akbar, chen chen, ocean vuong, and hera lindsay bird
bestiary is also probably up there for beautiful writing--the characters aren't uninteresting but the plot is pretty thin, and i still loved reading it just because it's so beautifully written--a lot like poetry in prose format
