1) hope you made it back inside! 2) sort of related to the music asks: where do find new music now a days? Not necessarily new releases, but new to you. (I'm a big fan of the a local college radio station a few other sources, but am always on the look out for more)

Yes, I am warm and cozy, as is my natural state!

Music, and how do I expose myself to new music. That's a great question, because I don't think of myself as actually doing that (even though I do).

So here are my popular music of the 20th and 21st centuries credentials: I grew up in a house with a good-sized record collection and was allowed to operate the turntable from a young age. So that's the built-in classic rock and country and blues 101 lessons.

I went through a fine arts program in high school in the 90's, during an interesting period when the internet was barely a thing, but music magazines and CD singles were. And we were all adorable and insufferable arts kids who exposed each other to new music as a point of pride, and of sharing and engagement. So there's learning from friends, which was huge. I could still probably sing along with every note of Little Earthquakes, and it was almost definitely @kungfulola who introduced me to Tori Amos, in, like 1994?

I spent most of my twenties and into my early thirties either working in an independent record store, or volunteering as music festival organizer, or both. The internet was good and also helpful by this point, too, so that exposed me to hundreds of musicians that I might not have stumbled across otherwise. We still got paper magazines, with sample CDs, and I read and listened and searched for things that I liked.

And that's almost where things are now.

When I see music posted on my dash, or on other social media (ha, like I'm well-adjusted enough to have an online presence outside of tumblr), I click play!

My friends and family send me recs or just enthuse about what they're listening to.

I keep track of musicians that I like - I don't keep up with mailing lists and subscriptions, but I do google things

I follow some artists on Spotify

I find Spotify to be a so-so tool for music discovery. Turns out that I use it a lot for making my own playlists, listening to albums (I am an eternal album listener. Both sides, baby!), and helping me focus on work. An unfortunate consequence of this is that while post-rock soundscape #4379: evening dawn and butterfly anvil or whatever might be good functional, brain-using music, it's not exactly My Jam. So Spotify's discovery algorithm is not ideal, I find.

That said, Spotify playlists can be really great!

My music reading of choice these days is mostly Paste magazine, and Exclaim, the free Canadian music and culture rag that is dearest to my heart.

Also I was introduced to an online radio provider called Radio Paradise, which is actually programmed by humans, I think. So far, the few times I've listened to it, I've found it more of a 'oh neat, I haven't heard that song in 15 years' than new music, per se, but it's not bad.

Roughly every time I take a few days off from work, I go on a Hunt. This means that I'm on Spotify, I'm doing Google searches for new releases, etc. I look up artists I know I'm interested in, and I find out about who else they work with. I think thematically and search for something like "hazy summer evening playlist" or "music for hexing" or whatever, and see what other people have already curated. And then I listen until my ears fall off, basically.

I don't really worry about keeping current anymore. It's almost impossible.

The CBC Music offerings online are pretty good, as well. TuneIn Radio lets you listen to all kinds of interesting radio if you're feeling that way, too.

I don't go to a lot of shows anymore, because I live in a small town where everyone is an up-and-comer on their way through and no one goes on stage before midnight, and I've got a day job. But I keep an eye on fliers and posters, and sometimes if something catches my eye I look it up afterwards.

I have no idea if any of this is helpful, I'm sorry! But I'm always happy to try to help people find something they like to listen to (it's more fun when it's not your job, as it turns out).
