Link jumped up. “Let me walk you back to the castle, then,” he said easily. “They don’t light the streetlamps for another half hour.”

The kindness grated. Link was just like that—always too willing to go out of his way for others. But one part of Revali chafed at the show of pity, and another felt a horrible flutter of…

“No need,” said Revali, turning his head. “It’s not that dark.”

“But—”

“I said it’s fine,” Revali snapped. “I didn’t know you so desperately missed being a glorified bodyguard. Didn’t get enough of that silent shadow shtick before the Calamity? Should we go to the Lost Woods to complete the picture?”

Link’s expression shuttered, the light humor in his eyes flickering. Revali wanted to swallow back the words immediately. He couldn’t seem to force an apology from his throat.

“Hey,” said Zelda hotly, rising to Link’s instant defense. “Don’t talk to him like that. That’s a low blow even for you.”
