Secret forbidden knowledge: Niji Chikara was inspired pretty much directly from Powerpuff Girls Z, which was an anime adaptation of one of my childhood favorite cartoons, and my first introduction to the magical girl genre.

It was pretty polarizing at the time for its very derivative take on the characters (obviously the original Powerpuff Girls weren't magical girls), but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I also obviously enjoyed the general premise of "mysterious dark energy turns people into monsters," because I ended up using a similar premise in Niji Chikara, lol.

Anyway, shortly after discovering PPGZ, I stumbled upon somebody's (no idea who) animation of their OC doing a magical girl transformation. I was getting into animation at around that time, so I was immediately like "Oh! I can do that!" and came up with some OCs that I thought would just be for that one animation and nothing else. And now here I am 16 years later obsessing over them OOPS

My intention with Niji Chikara was that it would be a little unclear as to whether it takes place in Japan, America, or somewhere else entirely. So far it's been leaning pretty American (by choice), but it's interesting to think what might have been had I opted to lean more Japanese. XD

For example, this dialogue where Chishiki alludes to being unpopular because of her high grades. In Western media, it's common for smart characters to be picked on at school, whereas Japanese media tends toward smart characters who have this mystique to them, too cool and/or busy to hang out with lesser students.

Perhaps a more Japanese Chishiki would have been actively disliked, where people know her because of her grades, but hate her because of her personality. Her few friends would have more rumors surrounding them, like, "How did they manage to befriend someone as cold as Chishiki?"

My concept sketches suggest that I was just kind of throwing random crap at the wall when I stumbled upon Malice's design, but that I decided on the black/white contrast has proven very convenient.
