Whether it's International Cat Day, Pizza Day, or Talk Like a Pirate Day, it seems like almost every day, the internet is celebrating a holiday.
Whenever I log onto Twitter, I quickly scan what's trending on the lefthand side of the screen.
Have you ever had this experience -- when you see an obscure holiday or observance day trending, and you think to yourself "Yup, I'm celebrating that"?
Some of these holidays might be simply too silly for your brand to engage with (and we certainly don't suggest sharing content on social media and then tacking on a completely irrelevant hashtag for the sake of traffic -- that's just plain annoying). But others might not be. You could be missing valuable opportunities to take advantage of trending topics with fun and relevant "holiday" content on social media.
From food to politics to animals and everything in between, there is a plethora of observance days worldwide during which marketers can share content relevant to their industries, get involved in a movement, or simply generate more awareness.
To help you plan for trending holidays, we created a list that you can bookmark, as well as a downloadable calendar so you can get automatic reminders. The list isn't exhaustive (there are a lot of food-specific holidays out there) and these dates and hashtags may still be subject to change. How Good is Tampa Bay’s Offense?
I’m not sure anybody expected the Bucs to put up 48 points in New Orleans, but go figure, they were the highest-scoring week one team, tied with the Jets for that honor, if you can believe it.
Five of Tampa’s touchdowns came from the offense, while the defense chipped in with a 34-yard fumble return. Backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick went 21 for 28 with 4 touchdowns and 417 yards and ran for a score as well.
So what’s the story here? Were the Bucs really that good on the day? Was New Orleans’ defense really that bad? Was it a combination of both?
It was a little bit of both. Tampa got some exceptional individual performances out of their receivers and Fitzpatrick was incredibly efficient on the day. The Saints’ secondary really struggled.
I went back and watched the condensed film on Gamepass, and here’s what I saw:
DeSean Jackson caught his early touchdown coming out of the slot and his late touchdown just a few yards off the right hash mark. He ran a bunch of routes from inside starting positions and did play a handful of snaps on the outside, but generally was not on the field when the Bucs went four and five wide. In those instances, Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard were sometimes out there with Adam Humphries in the slot.
Humphries will run a lot of typical white boy slot routes, a lot of shallow drags and stuff like that. He does a nice job disguising natural screens and freeing up space for the outside receivers.
Ryan Fitzpatrick: first touchdown scored on a zone read where he lowered his shoulder and got into the end zone, really an impressive run for a QB. In the 4th quarter, he had a HUGE 3rd down scramble to move the sticks and essentially ice the game. Fitzpatrick is more mobile than Matt Ryan, and while he isn’t going to gouge you for 20 yards on a busted play, he’s much less of a statue in the pocket.
Fitzpatrick’s back-shoulder throw on the Chris Godwin touchdown was perfect. He released the ball with the receiver still five yards from the goal line:

Fitzpatrick only had one clear miss that I saw, which was an overthrow on a Godwin deep ball after the cornerback slipped and fell. On the other deep balls to Jackson and Mike Evans, he was spot on, just a lot of assertiveness and accuracy on those downfield shots in this game.
Peyton Barber isn’t half bad, but his biggest run of the game came in the first quarter (23) yards. Take that out of his 69 yard total and the rest of his production ended up being 18 carries for 46, which is a 2.55 YPC. Jacquizz Rogers and Shaun Wilson barely touched the ball. I don’t think Tampa is going to have much success running the ball against the Eagles, unless the Birds’ offense starts with some three and outs and forces the defense into a lot of early reps.
The tight ends can line up in a lot of different areas and have pretty solid hands, good catch radius and the ability to go up and get the ball.
8-13 on third down was an incredibly high conversion rate (61.5%). The Eagles held Atlanta to 4-15 last week (26.6%).
Evans cooked Marshon Lattimore, a good cornerback, on several occasions. On both DeSean touchdowns, the Saints appeared to get mixed up in coverage and didn’t have safety help over the top.
Penalties: not a ton. They settled for a field goal on their third drive after a couple of offensive pass interence flags. Tackle Demar Dotson got called for holding and a false start, but otherwise the line was totally clean. New Orleans had 4-5 interference flags on the day.
The Saints only mustered 2 quarterback hits and didn’t register a sack.
Zero turnovers for Tampa. They finished +2 on the day and held the time of possession advantage mostly because of those NOLA gaffes.
I think the takeaway for me is that they’ve got a really diverse group of receivers and they’re a huge downfield threat. They don’t have much of a running game and hit on a lot of Hollywood stuff over the top of the defense.
This might be a pretty big Sidney Jones/Malcolm Jenkins/Rodney McLeod game. You’re going to have Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills lined up against the outside receivers, but Tampa showed some different looks in the slot and Jenkins might be up on the line for a chunk of snaps. McLeod is going to have to provide cover for Evans and Jackson getting down the field.
DeSean, who looks like he’ll be healthy for this game, caught all five his targets running this route tree:
On the far right, that completion was a huge 3rd down catch that moved the chains with a little less than eight minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. Tampa had just run the ball twice without much success and would have given the ball right back to New Orleans without that connection. And on the touchdowns, you see how they lined him up on the inside and torched the Saints on a post route and a loopy flag route.
Evans also caught every target, all seven of them.
He’s a big body and a guy who can make contested catches ala Alshon Jeffery, and you’ll see a combination of short, intermediate, and deeper stuff coming down the right side of the field:
That’s really what it is, accounting for the big play receivers and trying to limit downfield opportunities.
The Eagles defensive line should be able to handle Barber and company without having to the stack the box or sacrifice something elsewhere. I’d sit in nickel all day long and let Fletcher Cox and the defensive ends do their thing. This is the group that sacked Matt Ryan four times and hit him 14 times. Fitzpatrick needs to feel uncomfortable and can’t be given time to unleash those deep balls. The Birds’ defense was so good at taking away the running game and making teams one dimensional last season, and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t happen this year.
My only real concern is whether Nick Foles can stay on the field long enough to keep Fitzpatrick off of it. You’re talking Tampa heat in mid-September, and you don’t want the defense gassing out early. That might be doable considering the fact that the Bucs are missing Vernon Hargreaves and maybe Brent Grimes and shipped 40 points in the week one win.

How to Build Hype for a New Product Launch
Your company is ready to launch a new product. This is an exciting time for you and everyone else involved.
Depending on your industry and brand, you’ve spent months or potentially even years developing this product.
As you approach the final stages of development, you’re starting to get a bit anxious. I can totally relate to this feeling. You’ve spent so much time, effort, and money on this that you want to make sure that it’s successful.
If your new product isn’t a hit and doesn’t sell, it could be a crushing blow, both financially and psychologically for your brand.
Here’s what you need to realize. Your product may be outstanding, but if you don’t promote the release properly, nobody is going to buy it.
Sure, you may get the occasional sale from someone walking through the aisles of your physical location or browsing online at your ecommerce store, but that’s not enough to drastically increase your revenue.
There’s no reason to wait until your product launches to start promoting it. That way the introduction phase of your product life cycle will have higher sales.
Building hype for your new product will have consumers anticipating the launch. That way, you’ll start to get sales immediately on release day.
If your last product launch wasn’t too successful, you might need some tips on how to improve your strategy the next time around. That’s why I created this guide. It’s also great for anyone who is releasing a new product for the first time.
Here’s the best way to build hype and drive sales.
Identify your market segment
First, you’ve got to figure out who will be using your new product. This isn’t the same thing as identifying the target audience of your brand.
Sure, you already know who your customers are, but will all of your customers be using your new product?
Here’s a really basic and obvious example to show you what I’m talking about. Let’s say you have a clothing brand. You sell a variety of products for both men and women.
The new product that you’re releasing is a sports bra. Obviously, the market segment here is athletic women.
You can develop a customer persona to get more information about this segment of your customer base. Here’s an example of what this looks like.
This is really important for brands that have a diverse line of products. Not every single customer of your will be interested in the new launch.
So it’s a waste of time, money, and resources if you market to everyone and anyone who walks through your doors.
Instead, take advantage of your customer information that you have on file. You may have email lists segmented into certain categories.
Send out messages to the subscribers who fit the description of your customer persona.
Work backward
Think about your end game and start there. It’s an interesting strategy, but it helps everyone on your team get on the same page.
It’s always a great idea to follow the advice of successful companies. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, says that his business employs this strategy for new product launches.
Write a mock press release. Explain exactly what your new product is and why you made it. Talk about the top features, benefits, and differentiation factors.
Keep this description clear, concise, and to the point.
Come up with a potential frequently asked questions list. What kind of problems, inquiries, or instructions would a customer have if they bought the product?
Put yourself in the shoes of a neutral person who has no prior knowledge of the product and how it works. Will they be able to figure it out?
Outline the customer experience. Determine how different people will use the product. Imagine every possible circumstance that the item could be used for.
Next, write your user guide. This should be a step-by-step instruction page that describes everything the customer needs to know about how to set up, use, and troubleshoot the product.
Once all of these steps are outlined, it will make it easier for your company to brand the product and make sure that it’s ready to be marketed accordingly.
Start testing your product

This piece of advice piggybacks off of our last tactic. Big events are a great time to talk about your new product launch.
You’ve got lots of eyes and ears on the event, especially if other companies in your industry are participating.
Events will also have other media outlets attending. So the press can hear about your new product and talk about it on their blogs, TV shows, or podcasts.
All of this is free promotion. It gets the word out there and gives people something to get excited about.
In addition to pitching your product at an industry event or conference, your company can hold especially event that’s only for your products.
Apple does this every year.
They use these keynote events to talk about the technology and features behind all of their newest products before they get released.
During their September 2017, they used this special event as an opportunity to announce six new products.

As you can see from the list, there is a huge variety between these products. They’ve got new phones, watches, TVs, and operating systems.

Then, when the product is finally available for purchase, customers already know what to expect.
Apple is an industry giant. So it’s definitely not a bad idea for you to follow their lead and apply this strategy to your company.
Add a video demonstration to your website
You’ve got to take advantage of videos as a marketing tool. I’m sure you’re using it for other areas of your business, so promoting a new product launch shouldn’t be an exception.
64% of customers make a purchase after seeing a branded video. More than half marketing experts across the world say that video content has the highest ROI compared to other content marketing strategies.
Furthermore, 95% of information gets retained when it’s watched in a video. This is ideal for a new product release.
Since your product isn’t available for purchase yet, you want to make sure that your promotional campaigns are memorable.
Take a look at how Vantage Robotics uses this strategy to promote a new product on their website.
They’ve got video demonstrations for how the product works.
This is very important for certain industries, especially for those of you in technology. If you’re selling a t-shirt, you don’t need to really explain to your customers how it’s used.
But if you’re selling something like an aerial camera that follows people around and records a video, then there is probably a bit of a learning curve.
Video demonstrations help eliminate confusion. This relates back to what we talked about earlier, in terms of writing out your FAQ and user guides ahead of time.
Your video can answer any potential questions. Plus, when people see your product in action, they’ll be excited about the release and lined up to buy it.
Use all of your marketing channels
Don’t just use your website to promote your new product. Take advantage of all of your existing marketing channels.
Exhaust every resource.
Social media is a great place to start building hype. With the option for your followers to like, comment, and share your posts, it’s a perfect way to get even more exposure.
Plus, you’ll be able to get more engagement when you promote your products on social media.
Customers will be able to ask questions and hear back from you.
Don’t think that your marketing efforts need to be restricted to just a couple of channels or some posters inside your physical store locations.

Why should you wait until your product officially hits the market to start making a profit?

The Ultimate Social Media Holiday Calendar for 2019 [Template]
Whether it's International Cat Day, Pizza Day, or Talk Like a Pirate Day, it seems like almost every day, the internet is celebrating a holiday.
Whenever I log onto Twitter, I quickly scan what's trending on the lefthand side of the screen.
Have you ever had this experience -- when you see an obscure holiday or observance day trending, and you think to yourself "Yup, I'm celebrating that"?
Some of these holidays might be simply too silly for your brand to engage with (and we certainly don't suggest sharing content on social media and then tacking on a completely irrelevant hashtag for the sake of traffic -- that's just plain annoying). But others might not be. You could be missing valuable opportunities to take advantage of trending topics with fun and relevant "holiday" content on social media.
From food to politics to animals and everything in between, there is a plethora of observance days worldwide during which marketers can share content relevant to their industries, get involved in a movement, or simply generate more awareness.
To help you plan for trending holidays, we created a list that you can bookmark, as well as a downloadable calendar so you can get automatic reminders. The list isn't exhaustive (there are a lot of food-specific holidays out there) and these dates and hashtags may still be subject to change. But this is a great starting point for social media marketers who want to learn more about what's trending and how they can plan their content in a way that will be fun and engaging on Twitter and other social platforms.

Doug Pederson Is the Ultimate Underdog
For a team that has embraced the underdog role, it’s fitting that the Eagles are led by Doug Pederson. While his team is relatively new to the feeling of being discounted, Pederson was fending off the skeptics long before Carson Wentz was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
Pederson’s first stint in Philadelphia was as a quarterback. Andy Reid imported him from Green Bay in 1999 to pilot the offense until Donovan McNabb was ready to take the reins. Pederson thought he would lead the team for the season. He was relegated to the bench by Week 10.
After his playing career ended, Pederson got involved in coaching. Reid brought him back to Philadelphia as an offensive quality control coach in 2009. Pederson followed Reid to Kansas City when the Chip Kelly revolution arrived at the NovaCare Complex in 2013.
The tumultuous Kelly years left the franchise in disarray. Kelly had mortgaged the future of the franchise during his one season in charge of personnel decisions. With Howie Roseman exiled to an underground bunker at Eagles headquarters, Kelly moved quickly to reshape the roster in his image. Gone were Nick Foles and LeSean McCoy; in their place were Sam Bradford and Kiko Alonso. The signings of Byron Maxwell and DeMarco Murray did not have the desired impact, to say the least.
At some point during the rocky 2015 season, Lurie had lost his appetite for revolution. He longed instead for the stability of the Andy Reid years. What better way to relive the Reid era than by plucking an apple from Big Red’s coaching tree?
And so Lurie targeted a Reid disciple. However, John Harbaugh wasn’t available. Instead, the Eagles settled on Doug Pederson.
Pederson had risen to offensive coordinator by 2015. Reid even let his former quarterback call plays during the second half of some games.
Needless to say, the Pederson hire did not inspire much faith in the Eagles fan base. The hot names on the coaching market, like Adam Gase and Todd Bowles, settled elsewhere. Ben McAdoo stayed put in New York. Pederson had not been granted an interview by any other team in need of a head coach. He wasn’t even the most touted prospect on Reid’s coaching staff; that honor belonged to special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
During his introductory press conference, Pederson was peppered with questions about the play-calling strategy that doomed the Chiefs in their playoff loss to the Patriots. Pederson’s decision to call the plays as head coach was met with skepticism, especially since he was able to hire an established coordinator in Frank Reich. He did not have input in the decision to hire defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, a strong personality who could overshadow the rookie head coach.
The media sharks were immediately swimming around the chum that the Eagles dangled into the water. There was no way Pederson was going to last beyond two seasons.
Undaunted, Pederson patiently rebuilt the Eagles offense. Roseman deftly moved up in the first round of the draft and secured Carson Wentz, the quarterback of the future who quickly became the quarterback of the present.
Pederson and Wentz developed a rapport that propelled the Eagles to a surprising 3-1 start. But the 10-game suspension of Lane Johnson destabilized the offensive line and stunted Wentz’s progress. The team limped to a 4-8 finish.
It was a frustrating campaign, and Pederson shouldered his share of criticism. Pederson’s bashers seemed to forget he was shepherding a young quarterback (who played FCS college football) through his first season in the NFL. The ramifications of the Johnson suspension and the challenges of installing a new offensive system were never properly factored into assessments of the coach.
Former NFL executive Mike Lombardi emerged as the harshest critic of Pederson. “Everyone knows Pederson isn’t a head coach,” Lombardi declared. “He might be less qualified to coach a team than anyone I’ve seen in my thirty-plus years in the NFL.”

Mind you, Art Shell’s second stint with the Raiders occurred in that time frame. Rich Kotite was a head coach – twice! – in that period. Bobby Petrino had a cup of coffee with the Atlanta Falcons before running back to the college game in the dead of night. Rod Marinelli presided over an 0-16 season in Detroit, while a litany of coaches tried and failed to establish a winning program in Cleveland.
It was an outrageous opinion offered by a hot take artist masquerading as an NFL expert. Not to be outdone, the highest-paid troll in the sports media landscape offered his own dismissing comments after the Eagles’ Week 1 win in Washington:

What we needed to know was that the players in the locker room believed in their head coach. And their belief translated into an incredible season. Wentz didn’t just avoid a sophomore slump; in his second season, he established himself as an MVP candidate and one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks.
Of course, Lombardi refused to budge from his original position. Pederson had nothing to do with the team’s success. The Eagles’ turnaround was entirely attributable to Wentz and Jim Schwartz’s defense.
It was another idiotic assertion that laid bare the absurdity of the narratives that define the game, but do little to explain it.
The truth is that Pederson, along with Reich and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, played an instrumental role in Wentz’s meteoric rise. Pederson tailored his offensive scheme to maximize Wentz’s abilities. He installed plays that Wentz ran at North Dakota State, including that incredible touchdown pass to Corey Clement in the Monday Night game against Washington. Wentz excelled on third down and carved up defenses that dared to blitz. While it might be fashionable to ascribe these skills to game-day athleticism, the truth is that success on Sunday is dictated by preparation from Monday through Saturday. To write off the contributions of the head coach and play caller in that process is to ignore reality.
Nevertheless, Pederson’s detractors persisted.
When Wentz limped off the field at the LA coliseum, a miasma of doubt enveloped the Eagles’ season. Nick Foles’ uninspiring play against the Raiders and Cowboys did not temper the angst that Eagles fans felt about what was looking like a doomed playoff run.
With two weeks to prepare, Pederson developed a game plan that played to Foles’ strengths. Foles picked apart the Falcons secondary with read options and play action passes. The Falcons needed to respect the run in those situations because Pederson had done an excellent job establishing a ground attack early in the game.
Pederson also schemed creative ways to get the football in the hands of his playmakers. The coach dipped into the Chip Kelly archives and plucked out one of those chest passes to a receiver in motion; the play went to Nelson Agholor, who picked up a crucial first down. Pederson also called a creative fake sweep-turned-inside-handoff for Agholor, who took the ball inside the 5-yard line and set up the Birds’ lone touchdown.
Pederson strategically pushed the pace, jumping into a no-huddle attack in order to maximize personnel advantages and tire out an undersized Falcons defense. The result: the hesitant quarterback Eagles fans witnessed for 5 quarters was replaced with a competent passer who kept his eyes downfield, navigated the pocket, and found open receivers. Foles wasn’t great, but he was steady. He extended drives, kept Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense off the field, and didn’t turn the ball over (though he did benefit from some luck in that department).
Foles was steady and decisive, just like the guy patrolling the sidelines. Coaching in his first playoff game, Pederson eschewed the conservative philosophy that doomed his mentor, Andy Reid, in Reid’s first playoff game in Philadelphia. He did not hesitate to go for the touchdown on 4th-and-goal, and his offense delivered with six points on a well-blocked Blount run to the perimeter. More importantly, Pederson showed faith in his quarterback, whose presence in the starting lineup directly resulted in the team entering the game as a home dog. Foles rewarded the trust of his head coach with a 23-30 passing performance; that works out to a 76.67 completion percentage.
In the end, one home game stands between Philadelphia and a trip to Minneapolis. It will be fashionable, and partially correct, to attribute the victory to Schwartz’s defense, but make no mistake: this win belongs as much to Pederson as anyone else in the Eagles organization.
