People are just mean, everybody is so busy living their own lives and doing their own jobs, just selfish and self centered or is it me who's just too selfish and narcissistic?

I am no saint, but is it too much to have little expectation from the ones who you love? My spouse has been having a rough time since yesterday. We had some disagreements yesterday and I still reached out and thought we were ok. Then all morning I've been getting the cold shoulder and when I approached her she said she wanted to be alone and that it wasn't me. Ok, I can do that.

Then in the evening there was this other incident. Paapu loves grabbing this chair and climbing on it and doing stuff on the counter - I hate it. I think it's unsafe but my wife thinks "it keeps her occupied and quiet", "she's just exploring and experimenting", so let her be. I have been saying 100s of times this is not at all safe and she'll fall. Today she fell, and she fell on her f'ing head. In a rage of fear, guilt, panic and anger I scolded them both, aggressively said I told you so to my wife, and then said that I'm just going to trash that f'ing chair if anybody climbs on it ever again. paapu is ok thankfully, or at least she looked ok. I was losing my mind, so I just stepped away when it was her dinner time, went on a drive and calmed down. came back and tried to make small talk and received cold shoulder all night leading up to dinner.

Then this other thing happened. She had told me a couple of days back that I had to take paapu to her doctor's appointment on Tuesday, and I had to reschedule my own appointment from Friday to Monday because she wanted me to spend time with her on my birthday. Then today she tells me that my daughter's appt is actually on Monday and guess when, at the same time that I rescheduled my appointment on. Well no issues, happens, she was doing some office work on her laptop, and she's the one who manages the online stuff for the pediatrician so I asked her if she could please reschedule the appointment to another date, her exact words "I don't have time I'm busy doing office work, I'll do it later". ok, all good. Within 2 minutes her sister calls her and they chat about some bull**** for 15 minutes? Like no, I'm not making this shit up - I am bipolar, but I'm not a psycho. And no kidding, it really was a bull**** topic, like literally her sister was talking about "how a taxi driver was treating her on a trip, being rude and disrespectful" blah blah blah.

Eventually the "more important than work or rescheduling my daughter's appointment" call ended. At this point, I would sincerely like to thank my therapist! She kept telling me, to keep practicing the coping techniques, they will come in handy and they did. I immediately distracted myself, started grounding techniques, listing the colors that I was seeing around myself, counted the number of balloons we had left from paapu's birthday party week. I could feel myself coming back to reality. The fast and aggressive breathing stopped, my heart rate stabilized, hands stopped shivering - I had not realized all this was happening until it stopped. I intervened at the right time and had regained my composure by this time and asked one more time, and the whole schedule thing got sorted out. At this point I really felt like we were not in the right headspace to go out on a date tomorrow. And anyway she's been complaining about how her work had piled up and as I said she's been working extra, so I suggested she didn't need to take me out and should work instead if she wants. Oops, big mistake. Poor girl, didn't see a therapist like me, so she doesn't have the tools I have, lol /s. She got visibly angry, and told me that she's going to take the day off anyway and go do the things she has planned for us alone. There aren't really any reservations or tickets or activity planned or anything mind you. It was a quiet dinner, she finished and immediately got back to her work, I finished the rest of my dinner, set the dishes, took out trash and quietly came upstairs to the room.

Around midnight she called me downstairs. She had a big chocolate made out which contained smaller candies. She hugged me and I am expected to get a hug, forget everything and move on and just smile and take pictures? Hmm. What would've happened if the roles were reversed? Women are tough, man. They're insensitive to others feelings, unpredictable and extremely complicated. How does one live peacefully with them? I think they can't take it when they see their other halves peaceful, they just need to mess with it. The hug was it, no other convos, no I love you nothing. I'm genuinely interested in learning how to deal with women from anybody who's reading this. Because soon, paapu will grow up and once she hits teens, I AM FINISHED! These two girls are going to drive me crazy.

Sorry, this turned into a rant. I just, I want to be paid attention to for once. Nobody usually asks me how I'm doing you know? I just want my loved ones to come up to me themselves unprompted and tell me they love me for once. I need to go tell my daughter that I love her at least 100 times before she might decide to say it back once. I have to go tell my wife that I love her just so she can tell me "I love you too", because the assurance that I'm wanted and loved makes me feel safe. We don't say it often enough to each other, nobody sees that we all are just craving to hear it all the time, for our love to be reciprocated. But no, our insecurities and vulnerability, we have to wait for the other person to say it first, always, right? No matter how badly you are craving it. I have learnt over the past many years, nobody cares about how a man feels, I'm not trying to sound like one of those alpha male or incel or whatever, just stating what I experience. There's this expectation that men are tough, that they aren't emotional, they run away from feelings, they don't feel bad. My secret? I just keep them to myself, because nobody asked and I don't think anybody genuinely cares.

No wait, my mom cares. She shows me that me she loves me. Let me get this out of the way first, mom has issues, she's not perfect. She introduces a lot of drama, is manipulative, our relationship is complicated. But she's the only person in this world who loves me unconditionally - not my father, or my brother or my wife or daughter. Don't get me wrong they love me a lot and I love them a lot. I consider myself genuinely lucky to have all these members of my family, but there's an expectation of you there, like they each have a bar that you need to meet for you to get their love, it's the harsh reality of this world. But mom? No matter where I am, or how I am, what I say, or how I treat her (I have treated her really well as well as really horribly), she'd always just give me love. Moms are just like that, aren't they? They have a special bond with their kids, it's inexplicable. They're like this 24 hours all you can eat buffet where they serve love, affection, mercy and attention in unlimited supply. And guess what? I have lifetime free coupons for it!

Anyway, that's what's been going on with my life. How is everybody else on Tumblr doing? My last posts have 0 views I think, lol! Is there anybody reading this out there? I mean it's nothing special, just a bland, ordinary, guy struggling with day to day issues, but I just want to share. To understand if there's anybody else who feels the same feelings and emotions, thinks the same thoughts, lives a similar life! Am I doing it right? Am I making mistakes?

Can this be?

This time, I needed a break from trying. Just enjoy life. Have a glass of wine and let my body and mind heal.

We start trying again the following March.

April- nothing. Still trying.

May- nothing. Still trying.

June- positive pregnancy test! There’s a moment of happiness followed immediately by complete and utter anxiety and apprehension.

I call my doctor’s office and this time they asked me to come in to do some blood work. I was about 6 weeks along and they took some blood to test my HCG and progesterone levels. Those levels should essentially be doubling every few days in early pregnancy. If that happens it’s a good sign of a healthy pregnancy. I return two days later for another blood draw.

The results come in on Monday and everything looks great… numbers doubled. I’m also feeling queasy and my breasts are incredibly tender- two positive signs but nothing I look into too much as I had that the previous two times.

Next up is our first ultrasound apt. They schedule me for an earlier one this time. Typically it's in the first 8-10 weeks. I’m scheduled for 7 weeks (the heartbeat typically can’t be detected until after week 6). Josh and I are silent walking into the doctor’s office. Nothing good has ever come out of these appointments for us. I’m asked to give a urine sample and then we wait… what seems like eternity but was most likely only 5 minutes.

Keep in mind… up until this point… we’ve never seen a heartbeat!

We go back into the dark room and brace ourselves for the news.

The sweet ultrasound tech asks us if we are ready (the early ultrasounds are internal, by the way). And right away- we see a heartbeat! A HEARTBEAT! Our first time seeing a heartbeat. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen!!!!! Oh my gosh. I start crying. Josh is silent...almost in disbelief. The tech looks as if she’s tearing up a bit too!! She looks at everything else and everything looks great.

Step 1… done. And good. But neither one of us let our minds go beyond that. We don’t discuss names, nursery, we don’t tell anyone!!

Next I decide I want to go through with two blood tests, one that tests for things such as fragile x and cystic fibrosis. The other that tests for any chromosome problems (this one was so important to me considering our previous problems). People would ask me, why do the test? What is it going to change if it comes back with something? The answer was simple- I need to know. Peace of mind.

In the first test, if it came back with anything- Josh would then be tested to see if he is a carrier. If his came back positive for one of the diseases then our baby would have a 1 in 4 chance of having one of those diseases.

The chromosome one would tell us early on if this baby had chromosomal defect (such as 3 #16 chromosomes which we had for baby #2) and at least I could prepare myself as... best as possible. The test takes about 10 days to come back.

A week goes by and I get a call from my doctor with the results. Everything came back negative! Thank GOD! Huge weight lifted off our shoulders. (Something odd came up and she said- do you want to know the gender? It caught me by surprise… oh my gosh… we could know right now if it’s a boy or a girl… but I refrained. I knew I wanted to have a gender reveal party.. Something I have thought about and dreamt about for nearly 2 years).

After our 7 week ultrasound, we both talked about how we can’t get excited yet. It’s too early. The first one stopped growing at 8 weeks 2 days so it wasn’t time to celebrate yet.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve prayed at this point. It’s the only thing on my mind and all I can do is pray that this baby is healthy. We schedule our next ultrasound for week 9.

9 weeks, 2 days. Still feeling nauseous. Still have sore breasts. Still have cravings. Time for our apt. Again, all I can do leading up to it, on the way, in the doctor’s office is pray. Once again, it’s an internal ultrasound (I’ve gotten used to these at this point).

I feel like I can hear a pin drop. I have to remind myself to breathe.

There’s a heartbeat!!!! A healthy one! Can you believe it!!!! She takes a look at everything else and all looks good. This time I am more excited but Josh is still reserved. We’ve had our heart broken so much I totally get where he’s coming from and understand his choice of emotion.

At week 11 we decide we have to tell our family. They’ve been through so much with us and we just can’t keep it a secret anymore. We’re all super close and they’re going to start noticing soon if we don’t say something. (I’ll post a video of us surprising various family members- It’s so great! So many happy tears but again warn them, it’s still early and we haven’t had our big 12 week apt).

The 12 week appt is the big one and that’s the point doctors say it’s pretty safe to tell people. At that apt they look at EVERYTHING in baby and mom to make sure all is good. It’s an hour long ultrasound followed by an hour long apt with the doctor.

12 weeks, 2 days… It’s a Tuesday. My apt is early- 8am.

This time the ultrasound is external (hallelujah!!). Baby has a heartbeat. Baby is measuring perfectly. Everything is normal. The tech can see the brain development, the organs, everything down to the arms and legs. It was amazing. And at this point starts to really look like a baby. The tech checks everything out on me… the cervix, the sack the baby is in, the lining of all the walls, and everything looks great.

At this point- we both get excited!!! We went to breakfast after and got bloody mary’s to celebrate (virgin for me… which by the way is delicious).

Cylinder of Pain Update: A New Hope

Y’all!!! I got appropriate medical attention today!!!

So I got the results of my X-rays back yesterday, and they said everything was fine and I should start physical therapy. This confused me, because previously the doc had said not to move or do any PT until the pain stopped. I brought this up to the X-ray tech on the call, and he told me then I should wait until the pain stopped before I started anything (he didn’t sound too sold, tbh).

Since I had been in pain for two fucking weeks with no end in sight, this was about the worst answer ever.

I got off the call, had a small freak out, then called the doc back and left a message saying that lining up a treatment to prevent things from happening again was all well and good, but I wanted treated for the pain I was ALREADY having. The nurse I spoke to said she would get the message to the doc right away, but this was 4pm on a Friday, so I might not hear back until Monday.

I went home and wallowed in misery.

This morning I dragged myself out of bed determined to go somewhere and make myself heard and fight for them to address things. This mission was helped overwhelmingly by my therapist, who deserves a damn medal.

I rolled out of the house this morning with unwashed hair and no makeup, the dark circles under my eyes stark against the pale grey light coming from the sky. Two weeks of constant pain and sleep cycles no longer than two hours at a time had left me feeling - and looking - like a ghoul.

Still, I made my way to therapy, and she takes one look at me and goes, “well you look...tired.”

I laughed, bitterly, then proceeded to break down and explain everything that had gone on this last week and the endless pain with my neck. We had talked about it last week, but that was when I had still been optimistic. I had still assumed the end of the pain was just around the corner.

In the end she helped me make a list of things to say and ask the doctors, which helped immensely when I arrived at the urgent care clinic at the new place.

This time they heard me. This time they listened, and were not only able to explain what was wrong, but how it will get better. As it turns out, the issue with my neck was a perfect storm of circumstances leading to a misalignment of my muscles. My previous sprains and injuries never quite healed right, and left the muscles weak. My weightlifting and change in body weight strengthened some of my muscles but not all, making the weaker ones sitting targets.

All it took was sitting or laying at just the right angle for just the amount of time, and the whole house of cards came down.

The doctor who explained this to me was basically a wizard. He not only knew, before I told him, that I had been doing something like weightlifting to recover from my fall, but he knew exactly where my pain was and just where else it would be making me tense. It was MAGICAL having him explain all of this and how it would get better with PT.

They gave me a more targeted muscle relaxant to take with the nerve suppressant, and THIS combination works quite well. I took it earlier and was finally able to get some sleep. Still only about three hours, as it was the middle of the afternoon, but it was the best sleep I’ve had in two weeks.

More than that, though, they explained that all the inactivity had been making things worse. The last doc prescribing buckets of medication and telling me not to move was precisely the wrong thing to do. What I need is minimal medication and physical therapy.

I’ve started some of the PT stretches at home and they’re already helping a lot. My pain went from sever to moderate, then down to mild for the most part. I’m not cured yet, but I have an appointment with a physical therapist on Tuesday and they should be able to help even further.

In the mean time, I have things back in control, and should be able to ease back into my normal routines. No weightlifting or hiking yet, of course, but cleaning up the depression disaster in my room and getting back to work at the office and back to writing at home, those things I can do.

I finally got the light at the end of the tunnel, and I’m so very happy about it.

(Also, as a footnote, apparently this course of treatment was what my doc at the thurs appt had in mind, but th but X-ray tech didn’t realize that, so it got lost in translation and I wasn’t able to wait until it got cleared. We’re all on the same page now!)

Hi. :) You don't know be but I've been following you for a little while now and since I saw your posts talking about Graves Disease I wanted to ask you about it. I'm a 19 yr old girl, and I was diagnosed with it a few months ago and started on PTU. I wanted to ask, what was your experience with doctors and medication like? You had to have your thyroid removed? I feel worried about how this is supposed to be managed long-term because my doctors can be quite dismissive. If you don't mind. :)

OH MY GOD

DEAR ANON PLEASE HEED THE FOLLOWING LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES

So this is my experience and for the LOVE OF GOD don’t let this happen to you.

I was diagnosed with graves disease at the age of 14, showing symptoms of fatigue, tremors in my hands, exophthalmos and a slight goitre. I was tested for sleep apnea before i was diagnosed. Once diagnosed, my mother took me to a naturopath rather than an endocrinologist (i was a child, i had no control over the situation PLEASE DON’T DO ANYTHING THIS STUPID) 😩. It didn’t go well. I was given a tincture of iodine and various herbs (including licorice :/), which i had to take for about 3 months. it did nothing for me and my symptoms steadily got worse until my mother had to take me back to the doctor. My blood work showed a significant worsening of my condition; my T3 & T4 were both far higher than they had been before.

I was put on Neo-Mercazole which I remained on periodically over the next 9 years. You cannot remain on thyroid suppressants indefinitely due to their nature and bastard side effects (expelling giant blood clots through your nose? horrific), which got gradually worse the longer I had to take them. I don’t know how your doctors are managing your PTU but be vigilant. You NEED to aim at getting in remission. I was monitored closely while taking NM over that first course, and then as my hormone levels returned to normal I was weened off it. I was okay for 2 years, and then relapsed when I was 17. I was put back on NM and monitored until my levels returned to “normal”, then I relapsed again when I was 20.

after this I remained on NM pretty much for the following 3 years, but it’s effectiveness started to wane and many of the diffuse symptoms (especially anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, tremors, goitre, exophthalmos etc) simply weren’t going away even when my blood work showed I was within a supposedly normal hormonal range, and I just slowly went downhill over those 3 years.

this is huge problem with regulating thyroid disorders like this, your hormones are measured only in your blood work but T3 and T4 are heavily protein-bound hormones, meaning it’s presence in your blood IS NOT always consistent with it’s presence in your other tissues, where it is able to accumulate (not indefinitely without detection, but enough to give you symptoms). Suppressants just didn’t work for me long-term. They couldn’t help my thyroid regulate my metabolism over an extended period of time, the thyroxine in my body just kept accumulating. Basically, the moment I relapsed when I was 17, I was fucked. I was not aware of this at the time, obviously. At the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

the events at the end of my Final Relapse that led up to my surgery were serendipitous and bizarre. I was travelling to Japan in the October (2013) for a few weeks (which i flat out should not have been doing lmao) and got an appointment with my doc because i needed to fill another script for NM before I left, because i was about to run out. So i went and got the script and then when I went to fill it at the pharmacy, I couldn’t get the NM. There was an international shortage of Neo-Mercazole and I was flying out of the country the literal next day and I couldn’t get any ANYWHERE. PTU was still available but I couldn’t get that with a script for NM either. So I had no medication for most of those three weeks.

When I got home I booked another appointment as soon as I could get one and went back to work. Got another blood test to see what was going on and finally got some PTU. A couple of days later I came down with a cold. My immune system was shot and I was struggling to do things like get out of bed and walk up stairs at this point so I called in sick to work on the monday because felt so ill, and made another doc appt for that afternoon because i needed a medical certificate.

I went in to the doctor expecting to walk out with a med certificate, and asked her about my bloodwork. She opened the bloodwork and looked at it, looked at me, then took my temperature and pulse and immediately called my endocrinologist. My T3 and T4 levels were so high they were not measurable, i was feverish and hazy and my resting heart rate was 160-170 bpm. She told me I needed to go straight to emergency because I was at risk of thyroid storm (at which point I just burst into tears lol) and she called ahead to the hospital to have me admitted immediately, and that was that. I was taken to the hospital and was monitored there for 4 days and given several medications to try to flush some of the excess thyroxine from my body to make it safe enough for them to cut my thyroid out, which happened four weeks later.

So aside from the more diffuse symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, full body tremors, exhaustion, goitre and exophthalmos, I was admitted in emergency with acute symptoms like fever, tachycardia, chest pain, hypertension, muscle weakness, bloody diarrhea, peripheral edema and fuck knows what else. :/ None of these things really abated over the weeks leading up to the surgery, and I honestly can’t describe what it was like to wake up from it almost asymptomatic after dealing with these things for months and years. It was like waking up in a completely different body.

If you’re wondering how I could have let things get that bad, how i didn’t realise just how serious it was, you need to understand. You need to understand how gradually all of this happens, it built up over a period of years, and when you live with a chronic illness for that long you literally just get used to feeling like shit, so if something else shitty starts happening you’re already so tired it hardly even registers. It doesn’t strike you as particularly abnormal because it all becomes normal. That’s the most dangerous thing about it. Not to mention, the sicker you get with Graves, the less capable you are of assessing your own situation; the anxiety and exhaustion and insomnia and horrible hazy brain fog you’re in every single day make it completely impossible to think clearly.

SO THE MORAL OF THIS IS, for the love of God, be careful, and take it seriously. It is extremely serious. I did not take it seriously enough for years because I was young, active and otherwise healthy which gave me a threshold for tolerating it that was far too high. Don’t dismiss your symptoms, don’t let your doctors dismiss your symptoms, ESPECIALLY the mental symptoms. Be aware of all possible and potential symptoms so you can actually recognise them for what they are, along with all the potential side effects of PTU.

Get blood work done EVERY THREE MONTHS. THREE MONTHS, not six, not twelve, every three months. Other thyroid disorders, you might be able to be a bit more chill about, graves you fucking cannot. You cannot.

Read and get as much information about this as you can. Heed how your diet is going to effect this, because like any endocrine disorder, it will.

Elaine Moore is useful. (Read the forums) This is useful. Reading patient forums about people’s experience with it and how they manage it is invaluable, it’s far better than reading blogs that are usually dogmatic and trying to sell you stuff. patient.info is also a good resource for information.

Make sure you have a good GP and ESPECIALLY a good endocrinologist who works WITH you. Most endo’s DO NOT specialise in thyroid disorders, most of them specialise in diabetes and only have a middling knowledge of thyroid issues. It’s absolutely crucial to find an endo who specialises in thyroid disorders. Find one, if you can. Otherwise just crowd source the information yourself, print it and take it to your doctors yourself. Because honestly, the cost of not doing that is just....not worth it.

This isn’t supposed to scare you or anything, it’s a god damn burden but there are plenty of people with Graves who achieve remission or find ways to manage it over long periods of time, it’s a highly individual disease. So I really hope you are able to do that. :) TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

Hi we've been with USAA for over 10 yrs now for our Auto/Recreation insurance company. This month on our bill i noticed our rates went up by 35+ dollars per month. I called and they said nothing has changed in our policy. They told us because the dates our policy renewed we have an extra bill in this cycle. So they had to charge us more so we wouldn't have to pay 2 bills in 1 month. I am so confused it seems like were making an extra payment for nothing. I received a traffic ticket for following too closely and was clocked at 17mph going through town. The car in front of me had pulled away from the stoplight and was clearly not interested in speeding up, so I had to speed up some to signal into the adjoining lane to pass him. Oil Price Rises Past $51!

Good day… And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! I was invited to dinner last night to celebrate Braden Charles Butler’s birthday, and of course I accepted! He wore a shirt that had in big letters: Birth Day Dude! And that bowl of vanilla ice cream he had along with his cousin, Everett, didn’t stand a chance with Braden shoveling it in his mouth so fast… I laughed and laughed… I will host a birthday party for Braden on Saturday here at the house, so all his friends can go swimming. Hopefully it will heat up by then! Kansas greets me this morning with their song: Song For America… Man, in the 70’s, Kansas was BIG!

Front and center this morning, I want to talk about something that I listened to last night when I received a Tweet from CNBC… it was an interview with Ashton Edelman, legendary investor, and he was explaining the Plunge Protection Team… He pointed out first that when Reagan created this team in 1987, that no records of the trades or positions ever be made… Mr. Edelman was explaining that he believed the Plunge Protection Team (PPT) made up of the Fed, the Treasury, the CFTC, and the SEC… it’s actual name is the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets, and they take their instructions from the President to enter the markets to shore up the stock markets to maintain investor confidence in those markets… When Mr. Edelman was asked if he thought the turnaround in stocks this week was the work of the PPT, and he responded that he had no doubts…

Now, doesn’t that give you a warm and fuzzy to start the day, that the PPT has your back with your stock investments? Isn’t this a manipulation of the stock market? Of course it is! But we’ve known about the PPT for many years… But if the PPT can manipulate stocks, and the Fed manipulate bond yields with zero interest rates and bond buyer, why is it then that so many educated people still don’t believe that the precious metals are manipulated? Just a question to start the day… And this is going to be a busy day…

I’ve got a doctor’s appt. right out of the starting blocks today, and that’s followed by an infusion… But then the market will get some action from the Data Cupboard, and that should set us on a direction that’s yet to be seen, for the rest of the week.

The dollar fought back yesterday, and recovered a bit of lost ground to the currencies and metals… And this morning it’s trading sideways from yesterday’s close. Except the A$ , which I’ll explain in a minute. As the day went along yesterday, and into last night’s trading in Asia, the euro continued to lose ground, first giving up the 1.12 handle that it so proudly traded above the day before, and then leveling off in the high 1.11 handle… I’m not giving up on my thought that this might be the beginning of the end of the strong dollar trend… I recall, and I have to really put on my “remembering hat” to do so, that when the euro began to move higher VS the dollar at the end of the last strong dollar trend, that it had setbacks… And not just one or two, it took a while for Traders to come to the realization that the strong dollar trend was over… And once they did, well, you’d have to recall the while paper I wrote in 2001 called the “Decline of the dollar” and then the follow up white paper that was written late in 2002, called 2003: The year of the euro…

I have to say that a trader long ago told me that an asset moves into a trend because of a fundamental reason, and it won’t leave that trend until the fundamental reason has corrected or gone away… The Great Richard Russell, took it one step further and said that a trend doesn’t end until the asset or asset class has completely exhausted its run…

Of course back then (2002-2003) I was trading currencies and managing the bank’s risk in currency deposits every day, so I had daily conversations with traders, and saw where the money was going every day, to make it easier to make those calls… But then, once the call was made, investors came to us in droves, all wanting to learn about diversification using currencies and metals as asset classes in one’s investment portfolio. It was a fun time on the old Trading Desk… We stayed late into the night, ordered pizza and other food for our dinners as we kept up with the onslaught of new business… 13-14 hour days were the norm for me back “in the day” So, I guess what I ‘m trying to get across here is that, the change in trends can come stealth-like, and you don’t know it until it’s on you, and you find it embarrassing to recall that your main objective was to drain the swamp, when you’re up to your, you know what, in alligators! So, why wait until the alligators are knocking at your door? Diversify now, and if this isn’t the beginning of the end of the strong dollar trend, then I’m of the opinion that it won’t be too much longer before we are there.. of course that’s just my opinion and I could be wrong!

Yesterday, I talked about whether we should consider this the end of the weak dollar trend… Hmmm, I thought to myself, as I prepared the back of my SUV for luggage that those traveling with Kathy to the airport would be bringing along… (Kathy only takes a backpack… everyone else packs suitcases that look like they are going on a safari, and won’t be near civilization again for weeks! ) , this beginning of the end has to have started a while ago… and sure enough, there in Bill Bonner’s Diary, (www.bonnerandpartners.com ) was the info… The Dollar Index has fallen 6% since December… But the euro, has only begun to move positively VS the dollar since last week… Ahhh, but remember when yen was doing all the heavy lifting VS the dollar? So, if you’re like me, I don’t count yen in the equation! Since the euro is the largest component weighting wise in the Dollar Index, and the offset currency to the dollar, I always prefer to look at the euro to tell me if the dollar is weak or strong…

In Germany yesterday, German Business Sentiment as measured by the think tank IFO, printed and surprised most observers of the data, gaining 1.6 points to 114.6 from a revised upward April figure of 113. The Business expectations component was strong, as well as the Current Situation component, so overall, a very good print for Germany… Because it’s businesses giving the data, of whether things are good now, or not, and whether or not they think the future is looking good. I really don’t know what the European Central Bank (ECB) thinks of these think tank reports from IFO, and ZEW… But, if I was Mario Draghi, president of the ECB, I would pay close attention to them! For they are reports from the people, by the people, to the people… No hedonic adjustments, or seasonal adjustments, or weightings adjustments…

In the Eurozone yesterday, their flash print of the composite PMI (manufacturing & services index) remained steady Eddie in May… The expectations were for this index to see a pullback from the April figure of 56.8. The so-called experts thought the pullback would be around 56.6, but instead it printed at 56.8, which is a very strong number for the Composites data… The euro, which had bumped higher to 1.1240 yesterday morning just couldn’t get much traction from either the PMI data or the IFO data…

The Big Boss, Frank Trotter, sent me an email with a couple of graphs from the Fed St. Louis, and said, “since you mentioned the Swiss franc”… Well, the first graph showed that the Swiss National Bank (SNB) has a larger balance sheet than Japan! Wait! What? Yes that’s right, and a good portion of the balance sheet is held in euros… So, I guess they’re happier than a lark that the euro is rallying… The other graph just shows the amount of the balance sheet that’s held in foreign currencies… But the balance sheet is larger than Japan’s? I found that very difficult to believe, but there it was right before my eye! No wonder the franc is finding it a tough row to hoe VS the dollar these days, but more important to the SNB VS the euro…

Thanks Frank! I’m meeting Frank for lunch today after my infusion… I don’t normally eat anything before my infusion, so afterwards I’m hungrier than a bear! Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Overnight, Moodys threw a cat among the pigeons with a downgrade of China’s debt. The first downgrade that China has seen in 3 decades! But, in reality, China does have too much debt, and Moodys put them on notice with a downgrade to negative back in March 2016, so, we’ve been waiting for the actual cut since then… The Chinese authorities called the cut “absolutely groundless”, which I found to be kind of funny… Sorry Chinese authorities, but I know that your goal is to grow the economy out of this debt… But the growth hasn’t been there in recent years. In recent years China has grown at 6.5% to 7%, but back in the go-go days China’s growth rates were 10%+ So, get your economy on a roll, and you can then call the ratings cut “groundless”… And then let’s not get too upset here, China’s debt rating is still A1… So, certainly not junk!

The Aussie dollar (A$ ) lost ground on the China debt rating cut, but strangely enough, the renminbi hardly moved… Shouldn’t those roles be reversed here? Well, this scenario just shows to go ya, what happens when you have one semi-managed currency, and one currency that the markets move…

Also overnight, the latest poll in the U.K. show the conservatives’ lead narrowing, to single digits… Uh-Oh… Remember what I said when PM May called for this election? I said I thought she was taking a risk that she didn’t have to… All this could prove to make the BREXIT move very difficult, and pressure the economy… I just shake my head in wonderment of how PM May was able to win the election in the first place!

So, the dollar has fought back and we’ll have to see what happens this afternoon when the FOMC Meeting Minutes are printed… Will there be hints, or clues as to what the Fed is thinking, or will the markets find that Mr. Green murdered Miss Scarlet in the library with the rope? I love it when my mind slips away like that!

The price of Oil rebounded and won back that ½-cent and more that it has lost yesterday morning in the past 24 hours… I told you yesterday that it appeared to me that the selling was simply profit taking, and so it was, as the price of Oil pushed well above the $ 51 handle. So much is being put on the shoulders of the OPEC meeting later this week… But the Petrol Currencies are having a grand old time with the price of Oil moving higher!

Gold lost $ 9.70 yesterday… Just the other day, it appeared that Gold was ready to go on a run, and then along came 206,000 contracts yesterday, that most likely contained quite a few short Gold contracts, and that’s all I’m going to say about that! Gold closed at $ 1,250.50 on Tuesday, and is down another $ 4 in the early morning trading… What? Has all the Political Pressures/ risks gone away? Have the problems in the Middle East gone away? And what about all our debt around the world, but right here in the U.S. where we live, and buy gas, groceries and giggles? Has the debt gone away? I just don’t get traders’ minds when it comes to Gold… But then I probably shouldn’t bang on them too much..

The U.S. Data Cupboard today has the FOMC Meeting Minutes, and Existing Home Sales, which are expected to be weaker than the March print… Yesterday, we saw the color of the New Home Sales for April, and I told you that I expected them to be weaker than the March print, and weaker they were! March’s New Home Sales were 642,000, and were expected to weaken to 605,000, but actually printed even weaker at 569,000! I expect the same results for Existing Home Sales today.

We’ve seen quite a few Fed speakers already this week, and yesterday was no exception with Kashkari, and Harker speaking. Today, Kashkari goes to the podium again, and this time Kaplan will be the other speaker, and on and on like this all week, and the reason I haven’t made a bigger deal out the Fed speakers lineup, is that quite frankly, I really don’t think the markets or you should pay attention to anyone at the Fed, unless their name is Yellen, Dudley, Brainard, or Fischer… I’ve gone through all this with you before, explaining that while there are other members that vote, these 4 are the “clique” if you will at the Fed, and all rate decisions are made by these 4 members… Oh, looky there! Brainard is on the speaking docket for tomorrow!

To recap… The dollar fought back and won some lost ground yesterday, but overnight, the dollar has traded sideways, except for the A$ , which lost some ground, when it was announced that Moodys had downgraded China’s debt rating to A1… But other than that move in the A$ most currencies are trading sideways from yesterday afternoon’s levels. The markets are waiting for the FOMC Meeting Minutes that will print this afternoon. And Chuck has some fun with that… Gold lost nearly $ 10 bucks yesterday, but the price of Oil bumped higher to well above the $ 51 handle.

For What It’s Worth… Well, I have something different today, it’s all me, talking about things, so grab that coffee refill and come back, I’ll wait for you! Ok, ready? Here we go!

Under the heading of: Be Careful What You Wish For… I’m going to talk a bit about bond yields, and what the Fed is attempting to do with them… The Fed would like a normal yield curve, with short term yields, lower than long term yields, and a nice spread between the two. The Fed has raised interest rates 3 times or 75 Basis Points so far, and so far, they’ve only gotten a dime’s worth of rise out of yields in Treasuries. But what would happen if yields did move higher as the Fed wishes they would? Well, they would take losses on the unwinding of their balance sheet, for one… And isn’t that what all the buzz is about these days at the Fed? The unwinding of their balance sheet? The economy, on shaky terra, right now, would seem to fall under the pressure of higher yields… Example: When an economy is running hot, what does a Central Bank do to cool things off? They hike rates… But if an economy is teetering and the Central Bank hikes rates to raise yields, the same thing happens, the economy cools off, but it was ready to weaken to begin with! Uh-oh!

Let’s back up a bit here first… Remember how long ago I began using the Vapors’ 80’s song, Turning Japanese, yes I really think so, to describe what was going on here in the U.S.? I’m talking about the early 2000’s… I remember sitting with Chris Lissner, a bond guru, and we were comparing yield curve movements of the Japanese Gov’t Bonds, and Treasuries, and I said, “we’re just following them”… And over the years, we continue to follow them… let me count the ways…

A decline in savings rates to extremely low levels An aging demographic that is top heavy and drawing on social benefits very quickly A heavily indebted economy with debt/GDP ratios above 100%. A decline in exports due to a stronger currency, and Global slowdown Slowing domestic economic growth rates, U.S. 1st QTR GDP at 0.7%! An underemployed younger demographic. Millennials moving back home! Weak industrial production Dependence on productivity increases…

Do you see the resemblance? Well, now that we’ve gone back in time, let’s come up to date, and see where Japan is today… Oh, that’s right, they’re still in a 30 year deflationary funk, and believe me they’ve tried everything under the sun and moon to get a rise out of inflation, but nothing has worked, (for any period of time) and bond yields refuse to rise… Hmmm…

Now, few years later (circa 2009) when I was writing for the now defunct Currency Capitalist, published by the Sovereign Society, I wrote about how the U.S. could avoid “turning Japanese” The U.S. consumer was different than the Japanese consumer, in that here in the U.S. we spend, spend, spend, and in Japan they save, save, save, but something happened along the way to the U.S. consumer, it has “tapped out” … And now the spend, spend, spend, scenario is a pay the interest on the loans scenario, but still different than the save, save, save mantra for the Japanese. Unfortunately, this scenario for the U.S. consumer is far worse than the Japanese scenario, which is save, save, save. And so now I believe we’re turning into the cousin Eddy to the Japanese…

But like everything else… the end result is up in the air until… well, we get to the end! So, we could sit here and do nothing and wait for the end to happen, or we could diversify our investment portfolios using currencies and metals, and then sit back and do nothing! I’m turning Japanese, I think I’m turning Japanese, I really think so… – The Vapors, circa 1980…

My best friend has cancer, but I’m not the friend she needs...

My best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer about a week ago now. I travelled out of town to be there for her (honestly, to be there for me) during the time leading up to getting the results from her biopsy (which would confirm whether she had breast cancer or not). She lives away from her family. I didn’t want her to be alone during the weekend. I live away from my family as well and have had to rely on my spouse and my "chosen family” in their absence throughout the past 10+ years. We (my girlfriend and I) ended up staying in town for the Monday biopsy results as well, since we found out she planned on being alone to receive the news.

Throughout this entire weekend, I proceeded to say the wrong fucking thing at every single fucking turn!

Exhibit A

When we arrived at her house last Friday night, she was shit-faced. I didn’t realize it immediately as we were unloading the car. My girlfriend realized before me and asked, “Are you drunk?” The last time we spoke, she said she was doing some weight loss competition, so she was taking a break from drinking to help lose weight for it. So I commented, “Is that weight loss competition over then?” Fucking stupid. “Um, I’ve had a lot more important things to worry about.” I’m an idiot. I apologized immediately, “I’m sorry. It was a dumb question.” Of course she did.

Exhibit B

We’re shit-faced the night before she’s supposed to receive her biopsy results. Sober, she is a very private, reserved person. Drunk, however, she certainly is not. This has been the case our entire friendship of 10+ years.

We’re talking about what’s really important in life. Money is not. Possessions are not. Mortgages are not. Bills are not. Health is. Freedom is. Family is. Travel is. Vacations are. Experiences are. Friends are.

We deep dive into money, possessions, friends, freedom...all at once in our drunken state. My friend: “I don’t need this house.” “I don’t need this high salary.” “I would be just fine with a regular paying job.” “I could live with you guys in Austin.” Me: “You don’t need a job at all.” “Figure out how to work a bit here and there.” “Be a You-Tuber and make money that way.” “Start your own channel.” “If you’re dying, that could be your angle.” WHAT THE MOTHER FUCKING FUCK!!!!!!!!!! THE most ridiculous thing I’ve ever said in my life. Who the fuck thinks like that, let alone fucking says that shit?!?! Me apparently. Oh yeah, and I’m nearly 35 fucking years old saying this stupid fucking shit. I can’t fallback on youth for my stupidity.

My friend: “What did you just say?” “If you’re dying, that could be your angle.” I MOTHER FUCKING REPEAT!!!!!!! “Uh, that was really really really insensitive. I’m really sorry.” Silence...

Exhibit C

I know. I wish it ended at Exhibit B as well...probably more than anyone else except my friend. It’s biopsy results day. No one knew when the she would get the call, so we went out to breakfast with our laptops, since we were all “working remote” that day. We hadn’t even gotten around to ordering yet, when the call came. My friend and my girlfriend went outside of the restaurant to take the call. My girlfriend was to supposed to listen to the details, since my friend glazed over in an emotional state the last time she spoke with doctors and nurses.

I inherently knew to remain inside away from them. Last night’s dialogue was stained in my memory. In addition to being the biggest douche in the world, my friend also reminded me the night prior that her and I were “weak” (emotionally weak) and that my girlfriend and another friend of ours were the “strong ones”. I’m certainly not going to debate that truth.

My girlfriend texts me while they’re outside, “it’s cancer”. “fuck” is my response. They remain outside for a while. Eventually my girlfriend comes inside and let’s me know that my friend is trying to schedule an appointment with an oncologist outside and that I should probably go out there. So I go out there... She’s pacing back and forth in a field next to the restaurant. I don’t say anything. I just sit on the curb. The rest of our “field time” is kind of a blur.

At some point, we’re all sitting back at the table inside the restaurant. My friend is in a state of shock. My girlfriend is trying to preoccupy herself with work on her laptop. And I’m hiding my face behind a menu trying to cry in complete silence. This is what my friend meant by “weak” I realize.

Finally, my friend breaks the silence and starts to divulge bits and pieces of the conversation with the medical personnel. She mentions cancer in the lymph nodes and I ask ignorantly, “Does that mean it’s that ‘metastasis’ thing you mentioned before?” Fucking stupid. For one, don’t fucking use a medical term that you aren’t 100% certain of what it means! Second, don’t fucking say anything just because you feel you need to say something, but you don’t know what the fuck to say. Somehow this feels in line with “don’t say anything, if you don’t have anything nice to say”. Per Wikipedia, “Metastasis is the spread of a cancer or other disease from one organ or part of the body to another without being directly connected with it.” So this was not even a diagnosis that could be told by the biopsy alone, which means it’s still a possibility. And, it’s the worst possibility. And I suggested it as soon as she found out she had breast cancer. Yep, I’m a fucking douche.

Exhibit D

This one is thankfully less impactful, but potentially telling to the fact that my friend has realized my shortcoming; at this point, she’d have to be pretty dense to not have discerned this by now you might imagine.

To preface, as I’ve mentioned, my friend is super private. She’s also been in a state of shock understandably. She gave the friend that she previously told me was one of the “strong ones” permission to speak with the medical staff who have been handling her case up to this point. And that friend is truly strong. There’s no question about it. She’s a mom and I don’t know what it is, but mothers are fucking strong as shit! This “strong one” is the one that I have been in touch with for accurate information.

Prior to my friend’s oncologist appointments, she spoke with the medical staff to gather all of the necessary information that my friend was not prepared to hear.

What she told me:

Invasive Ductile Carcinoma Grade 3 (”Grade is different from stage, so don’t freak out on that.”)

Invasive Ductile Carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer

Without biopsy, they cannot determine if cancer is in the lymph nodes, but the lymph nodes look suspicious

The following information will come from the doctor as appointments progress:

Type of cells (what is feeding the cancer)

Prognosis (stage of breast cancer)

Treatment options

Treatment recommendation

What she told my friend:

You have the most common type of breast cancer

Without biopsy, they cannot determine if cancer is in the lymph nodes, but the lymph nodes look suspicious

The following information will come from the doctor as appointments progress:

Type of cells (what is feeding the cancer)

Prognosis (stage of breast cancer)

Treatment options

Treatment recommendation

Today, she went to 2 oncologist appointments...the first was the recommended oncologist and the second was to get a second opinion. The “strong one” went with her as well as her mom. Here’s where Exhibit D comes in...

My friend’s ex-girlfriend, with whom she’s still really good friends, texts me asking if I’ve heard anything yet. I confirm that I haven’t and we agree to text each other as soon as one of us hears something.

The “strong one” sends this update to me after the first appointment:

“Wanted to give you an update. We are waiting on the second opinion. What we know is that it is invasive ductile carcinoma grade 3 triple negative it is common and hers is aggressive but treatable. We know she is stage 3A. The reason It is stage 3 is because of the size of the tumor. She has a PET scan tomorrow to make sure it has not spread. She has a biopsy of her lymph nodes , surgery work up and port insertion tomorrow. And starts chemo Thursday.”

Shortly after I receive this, I receive another text from the ex-girlfriend who is forwarding a text from the “strong one” who just texted me:

“We are waiting on the second opinion. What we know is that it is invasive ductile carcinoma grade 3 triple negative it is common and hers is aggressive but treatable. We know she is stage 3A. “Looking at having a single mastectomy in about 4-6 months time. Once we get out of this appt I will be able to give you more information on the notes I took.”

The text is the same except for the last paragraph, which was omitted in the text that I received. This is potentially telling. It could, however, be an oversight. I won’t rule that out, but I’m not surprised if the former is true.

Before this registers with me, I reply back to the ex-girlfriend:

“Shit...didn't get the mastectomy part sent to me”

The ex-girlfriend replies:

“Hopefully, the PET scan shows that nothing has spread. That's shitty, but as long as she can get rid of it all.”

So, again, I said the wrong thing. I said the first thing that I occurred to me instead of realizing that the most important part of the text was that the PET scan...that was the next hurdle.

There you have it...

I think we all can see by now that I’m the wrong person to say anything of significance to. If you need me to be strong for you, I cannot. If you need me to be “grounded” for you, I cannot.
