ahjahjah today in class, we had some discussions about how to translate some dessert names and which German or Austrian names to pick, and I had to hold back so much to not start a whole class debate about various food names

#sauerrahm + schmand... what is a schmand? #there was some disagreement about napoleon cake #and something apparently called profiterol which i've seen but never once heard the name of and i hate that name #and it brought up brandteig + windbeutel #wtf are all these names #i'm just glad no one brought up pfannkuchen/omelette/palatschinken and krapfen/whatever the hell you all germans call krapfen but you're #wrong #anyway i would not have been strong enough for that discussion in a class with a bunch of language nerds from different areas of #austria germany hungary croatia russia italy #the hungarians had a disagreement about what goulash is in hungarian #like hungarian goulash vs austrian one vs a different hungarian one vs something else #this is my favorite class it's the most fun because the teacher brings up job-relevant stuff too not just uni-relevant #and there's always discussions about much stuff #sometimes too much discussions like sometimes one word is just objectively the best choice and discussing for 20min about #a different but worse choice is kind of a waste of time #but there's this russian woman in class who has an opinion about everything and needs to correct everyone about everything russian #like ma'am just because you're russian doesn't mean you have the perspective of all of russia #russia is huge #anyway i really like that class and the teacher #mine #translation
