Chef Sunny’s Kitchen: Hobbies of an Unreliable Narrator
Hey all! Just wanted to do another little post that I’ve seen toyed with but never explored to it’s fullest potential. Spoilers for Omori ahead!
So Omori as a game is no stranger to the concept of unreliable narrators, but often, I see people using that term pretty liberally to explain away situations that don’t really make all that much sense (example, I’ve seen someone say that Sunny’s fridge isn’t actually empty, he’s just refusing to see the rest of the food because he feels he doesn’t deserve it). However, if you spend any amount of time examining the game, you will find that the ways in which Sunny (and Basil) are unreliable narrators are fairly consistent.
To spend a little bit of time on Basil, there are two main reasons that he is an unreliable narrator. Firstly, he is in a massive state of denial throughout the real world sections of the game, not that that is that big of a deal, since we already know the Truth by the time he gives his account of what happened the night of the recital. However, there is another big way that Basil is an unreliable narrator.
Tumblr media
Basil’s photo album is one of the primary ways that the player, and by extension Sunny, is familiarized (or re-familiarized) with the past. But there are several ways that Basil’s photo album can be misleading. For instance, the photo album is from Basil’s perspective, so we don’t often get views of what other characters thought about certain events. In addition, things like Sunny and Kel sneaking out to go to Hobbeez or Sunny and Aubrey talking on the swing set aren’t going to be mentioned in the photo album, since Basil would not have been present. Beyond that, unhappy memories such as the Lake Incident won’t be included. Finally, Basil is often noted for enjoying the act of keeping secrets, which is something we see highlighted in nearly every memory during Memory Lane.
To give an example of where stuff like this comes up, we should start at the Rainy Day memory, or rather, the pictures that are associated with it.
Tumblr media
(4/29): Just KEL being KEL again... We went to HOBBEEZ, but the shop owner told KEL to leave his jacket outside since KEL was getting all his comics wet. Sorry, SHOPKEEP.
From here, we know that after the Rainy Day memory ends, the four friends head over to Hobbeez to read comics, and then Kel had to leave his jacket outside. But what we don’t see, due to Basil not talking about it in the album, is that they actually split up afterwards, with Aubrey and Kel staying at Hobbeez, and Sunny and Basil going to the secret hangout spot and hanging out at the dock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They don’t even have the umbrellas, showing that they are intentionally in the same outfits, since they couldn't just re-use the same sprites.
Likely, Sunny and Basil split off from the group to have some kind of private conversation away from Aubrey and Kel. It could’ve been related to Sunny’s crush on Aubrey, since this would’ve been the day that Basil figured it out. Sunny clearly never talked about his crush with Mari, since Mari is shown comparing Aubrey and Kel’s friendship to her own relationship with Hero, so perhaps Sunny was feeling a little frustrated at how close Aubrey and Kel were. He does canonically just walk ahead of the group after Basil calls out his crush, after all. It doesn’t really matter what specifically they talked about, because what does matter is that this is an event that Basil purposefully left out of the photo album, so we are completely left in the dark on what actually happened in this conversation.
But I want to get on to the main thing I wanted to talk about here.
Sunny
So Sunny is such an unreliable narrator that it is sometimes painful. There are two main reasons that Sunny is an unreliable narrator:
Sunny is repressing the Truth, so things like the existence of the closet are ignored, and within Headspace, how important Basil is to Sunny specifically is being repressed until later in the game. This causes quite a few oddities. The Headspace friends (and Hero in the real world) say that Omori has a good memory, but based on things we see throughout Headspace, it seems like a lot of the things that Sunny “remembers” are actually just things about Basil. (e.g. the Headspace photo album shows that Sunny has forgotten that Aubrey’s favorite fruit is watermelon. Meanwhile the least effective smoothie is the Banana smoothie, while the most effective non-dino smoothie is the Strawberry smoothie. Basil is shown in the real world photo album to dislike a banana popsicle, and outright says that he loves strawberries during the Birthday Memory. I may do another post expanding on this concept, because I think it is incorrect to take the statement about Sunny/Omori having a good memory at face value.)
Sunny is an imperfect human that hasn’t seen his friends in nearly four years. The way that his friends are portrayed in Headspace is in many ways, an ideal, and is not representative of how they act in either the current day, or back before the incident.
However, there is one last way that Sunny is an unreliable narrator, and that’s the simple fact that Sunny hates himself.
See, Sunny hates himself on a subconscious level throughout the game. Due to this, many of the things that Sunny does for others or himself were cast away, as they were just no longer important in the face of what he did. Even if he does remember that he did things for his friends growing up, they are never brought up because he no longer sees those things that he did as important. Within Sunny’s mind, the fact that he would listen to Basil talk about anything and everything is repressed until the player enters Blackspace, when Stranger uses that information to guilt Sunny for leaving the real Basil behind. The fact that he did this for Aubrey as well is something that is kept away from the player until he’s having a version of his friends remind him of their bonds shortly before entering a battle within his own mind to keep from losing the will to live in the battle against Omori.
Due to a mixture of all these reasons, Sunny’s relationships with each of his friends can often seem one-sided, especially when it comes to Basil, since so much more of him is being repressed than the others. You will often see the idea floated around that Basil’s liking of Sunny was one-sided, and that Sunny actually considered Kel his best friend, but this simply isn’t the case, it’s just that Basil kept a photo album and Sunny is actively trying to forget everything related to the Truth.
To illustrate what I’m talking about, I’d like to expand on a topic that I briefly mentioned in my previous post: Sunny has a small cooking hobby.
It wouldn’t be surprising for someone like Sunny to have an interest in cooking and preparing food. After all, two of the people that he looks up to the most are Mari and Hero, and both of their food preparation abilities are put on a pedestal within Headspace. Also within Headspace is an extremely wide range of food. A notable exclusion from the Snack list is steak, Sunny’s favorite food (according to his mom). Within the Foe Facts! journal, we can see that Sunny knows nutritional information for cilantro (this is attributed to Kel in the journal, but remember, this is Sunny’s mind, so Sunny would have to know it), and we can also see information about ginger and celery. According to the Headspace description for chocolate, we know that Sunny knows the difference between baking chocolate and regular chocolate. Sunny also has a concept of vegan food, and seems to be preoccupied with what can be considered vegan when it comes to several of the different Bunnies that appear within Orange Oasis.
Bread and toast are also given a large importance within Headspace, which likely stems from the summer before the photo album, when Hero and Mari were working at the bakery. He knows about different types of bread, has a technique called “Bread Slice” in Headspace, and is at least somewhat familiar with the process for making bread, as seen in the area where the Bread Twins are located.
In order to get any deeper into this analysis and talk more about why this information is somewhat hidden from the player, we need to get into just who it is Sunny cooks for.
Tumblr media
The table that Basil and Sunny always sit at is one of the most adorable easily-missed details in the game, in my opinion, but I personally find that it connects to Sunny’s cooking interest quite well. After all, there would be no other reason for them to have this table in here if it was just for eating and homework and playing, as there is a full table in just the other room. The fact that this table is seen in a version of the house seemingly taken shortly before the incident is also relevant, because Mari and Hero would have been much more busy and likely wouldn’t be cooking or setting up picnics as much.
I’d like to put forward the idea that many of Sunny’s culinary escapades, outside of the group cooking situations that are mentioned by Hero, were shared specifically with Basil. This is because there are two primary food items that are associated with Sunny’s abilities.
Tofu
Tofu appears a whole lot in Headspace. It is loved by the Sprout Moles, and it is the cheapest food item, since you can get it for a single clam. The description for it calls it “Soft cardboard, basically.”
In the 2018 demo of the game, Basil’s grandmother directly states that tofu is Basil’s favorite food. Since this does not appear in the final game, I would like to point out that Basil’s fridge in Faraway is still the only fridge that has tofu in it, so it can still be assumed that this is intended to be the case.
During the Hikokomori route, there are two books that Sunny is shown to own that are relevant to this analysis. The first is one entitled “The Food Pyramid”, which is just another piece of evidence of Sunny’s cooking interest, and the second, “The Benefits of Tofu”. Sunny having this second book is very interesting, as he himself is shown to dislike tofu greatly. The only conclusion that I can draw from this is that Sunny specifically learned how to prepare tofu for Basil’s benefit.
And indeed, despite tofu healing the least amount of health and costing the least amount of clams, it is still the most clam efficient way of acquiring better snacks in Headspace, as 10 can be traded in Orange Oasis for a random other snack. I like to imagine that this references Sunny trading tofu with Basil for other foods, with the time commitment involved in the exchange referencing the fact that Sunny could’ve just learned how to make the other foods, but he is going out of his way to make something Basil likes, for his benefit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: a normal amount of things about tofu for someone that doesn’t like tofu themselves to know
However, the other food that we know about Sunny’s proficiency with is far more interesting...
Strawberry Cake
Tumblr media
So this is something that I’ve seen brought up a lot recently, the fact that Sunny knows step-by-step instructions on how to prepare a strawberry cake within Headspace implying he was involved with the preparation of Basil’s birthday cake in the real world, as it is the only time one is seen in the real world, but I think this idea deserves to be examined a little bit further.
First: Sunny knows how to make a strawberry cake, one way or the other.
Second: Sunny is not given credit for making Basil’s strawberry cake during the Birthday memory.
Tumblr media
So, here’s what we know:
Hero is given credit for making the cake by Aubrey. However, Hero never actually responds to either Aubrey or Basil’s compliments during the memory.
Aubrey did not help with the cake, otherwise she wouldn’t have given credit to Hero specifically. In addition, we can assume Kel did not help, by virtue of him allowing Aubrey to not compliment him as well. Aubrey also likely does not believe that Mari was involved, because Aubrey would’ve complimented Mari if she knew.
Not everyone would’ve been at Basil’s house while the cake was being made, as this party was a surprise party being held at Basil’s house, so a few members of the group were likely on distraction duty.
Mari teases Sunny for being “camera shy” and tells him that he will get used to it soon enough. Indeed this does seem to be the case, as it doesn’t take long at all for Basil to take a picture of Sunny once he gets his camera back.
Tumblr media
“Hehe...” indeed, Mari.
Finally, I would like to point out that just like the visions for the Rainy Day memory, there is a vision for this memory. In Faraway Park, you can find Hero and Kel playing, while wearing their outfits from the Birthday memory, implying that Hero and Kel were not spending their time before the party making a birthday cake.
There are two adorable conclusions that can be drawn then, from Sunny knowing how to make a strawberry cake. I’ll let you take your pick.
Sunny himself made Basil’s cake, either with instruction from Hero or on his own, then was too shy to take credit for it, or even appear on camera with it, with Hero and Mari covering for him and Hero staying silent as he is complimented by Aubrey and Basil. Aubrey is either also covering for Sunny, or is just mistakenly assuming that Hero made it. Sunny may have even told Basil that he made it later, because the photo album says “My friends surprised me with a strawberry cake”, rather than Hero.
Sunny, after seeing how happy the cake made Basil, decided to learn how to make a strawberry cake later.
Either way, Basil’s smile from that day is certainly something that stuck with Sunny, considering Basil’s birthday is covered in Memory Lane, and his own isn’t.
Tumblr media
Sunny even has knowledge that Basil doesn’t really like sweets that much, as seen through what Mari says in Orange Oasis. This is something that Sunny only seemed to do for Basil. Sunny’s favorite food is steak, and his way of preparing that is to put it in the microwave. I would like to point out that most people would learn how to cook their own favorite foods first. You don’t have to see it this way, but you could read clear romantic undertones to this behavior. Sunny and Basil’s table in the kitchen is right next to the counter where Mari and Hero like to do their homework. Sunny also looks up to Hero a great deal, and if you interact with the stove in Sunny’s kitchen, he specifically makes a big deal about how Hero is always trying to cook for Mari but makes too much and the rest of the friends get the leftovers. Not to mention that the unknown ingredients involved with the Hero’s Kitchen area of Black Space 2 are linked to Basil in the game’s data, and the sprites are all tofu sprites.
To loop back around to the central point here, due to Basil’s love of keeping secrets, Sunny’s little hobby would not have been recorded within the photo album, because this was just for Basil. Sunny, in the modern day, doesn’t think about the fact that he did this for Basil, because to do that would be for Sunny to value what he brought forward to their friendship, and he can’t do that if he hates himself. And remembering how close he is to Basil at all would be to allow himself to feel guilty for leaving him alone to deal with the fallout of Mari’s death. Sunny and Basil are two unreliable little gremlins, so you need to look a little closer to see how their friendship went both ways, but I promise you, the game does give you a lot to work with if you just look for it.

The arrival of dancers made the practice room even more crowded and noisy than usual. It was one of the few times Seventeen worked with an outside dance team, and they happened to have a lot of new faces around, who needed time to figure out the staging and how things were working so far.
After they ran through the choreography a couple of times, the choreographer called in a break, allowing the huge group to instantly clear the middle space and separate themselves into small circles of conversations.
Seungcheol, Jeonghan, and Joshua instantly met each other and began chatting about dinner plans and whatnot. Slowly approaching Jun and Wonwoo, the oldest filled them in on what they're deciding until he starts searching for someone.
“So, we could order it on the next break and have someone grab it for us. Anyway, did anyone see Hayun?”
“Making friends, as usual,” Wonwoo comments, pointing at the other corner of the room where the girl was surrounded by four dancers.
“Hayun-ah” The leader waves her over and waits as she jogs to his side “We're talking about dinner, what do you think about-”
“Oh, those guys were talking about this new restaurant that opened downtown, I was thinking of tagging along with them” She points back at the group and watches as her members nod “But I can cancel, of course”
“No, go ahead. It's just a meal” Joshua goes to wave her off when Seungkwan approaches them with crossed arms.
“Yeah. Just a meal. Until she's suddenly ditching us during the holidays and moving out with her new friends” The boy pouts, turning his face away from the group. Hayun reaches up to ruffle his hair before landing a soft slap.
“Says the dude who is friends with half of the entertainment industry” Ignoring his eye roll, she turns back to the rest of their little huddle “Well, if nobody else will feel betrayed”
“I was kidding” Seungkwan whines and Scoups pushes her away from them “Stop being dramatic and go do your mingling”
Going back to the group of dancers, Hayun resumes chatting with them for a couple of minutes before the break is over.
After more hours of running over every tiny detail for the stage, the rehearsal finally ends and the scattering of people begins. Hayun takes a couple of minutes talking about minor adjustments with the members and just checking up on them before searching for the four friends she had made that evening.
“Hey, how do you guys plan on heading there?” She asks, taking a sip from her water bottle and missing the glances between the two boys and two girls.
“Actually, we might have to do it another day,” The girl closest to her says and flips a hair strand off of Hayun's shoulder. “We got pretty tired from this last session”
“And work tomorrow it's going to start pretty early, you know. It's best to let this go for today,” The boy nods to her before pulling out his phone from his pocket and slightly turning away from the idol.
“Yeah, I get it. That's okay, we'll reschedule it then” Hayun smiles and gives them a thumbs up “I'll head to the dorms, then. Have a good rest, and tomorrow we'll talk more”.
Sending her some quick waves and small smiles, the four dancers waited for Hayun to turn around before sharing an annoyed look and sighing.
The practice room slowly grows empty, only leaving Wonwoo and Vernon who lost an incredible game of rock, paper, scissors, and had to stay behind to clean up everything. Finally turning off the lights, the two boys head out into the hallway and spot a group of four people standing by the entrance.
“Aren't those the people Hayun was talking to earlier,” Vernon asks quietly before a voice from the group reaches them.
“Why is this damn cab taking so long? We should have let that airhead tag along”.
“Agreed. She would have talked our ears off, but at least we would have made it to the club already”.
Sharing a look, the two idols stop walking and listen closely to understand if the dancers are talking about what the boys think they're talking about.
“That was so stupid. Why would you invite her in the first place? She's so annoying”.
“I mean, having an idol considering you a friend would be fun, right? Especially with the Christmas season coming up. Can you imagine the gifts she would buy us?”
“Yeah, dude. We wouldn't even need to worry about paying for stuff anymore. Just have Hayun tag along anywhere and, boom, no more tabs to pay.”
“But also, no more functioning eardrums”
“No, you have a point. She seems like she'd give us her credit card password on the third time we hung out. Not to mention, looking at her position in contrast with ours. You don't even have to befriend her, but be on her good side, and she'll make sure to give us more gigs within Pledis”.
Standing frozen, Wonwoo and Vernon listened to everything they were saying and shared looks of disbelief. Having enough of it, the oldest cleared his throat and slung his bag, making it hit his own back with enough force to make a thumping sound.
“Let's go, Vernon,” He ignored the four people standing before them with wide eyes and resumed walking. Once shoulder to shoulder with one of the dancers, Wonwoo stopped again and said while looking ahead, “Next time, be careful of whom you're talking about”.
Vernon, on the other hand, made eye contact with each dancer before raising one eyebrow and following the oldest. After closing the car door, he groaned annoyed, “Can you believe they had… ”
“… the fucking audacity” Jeonghan places his cup on the table, face showcasing utter disgust after Wonwoo told him what they had listened before leaving the Pledis building.
“Show me who those people are again tomorrow. I'll make sure they never step inside our practice room, ever again,” Hoshi points out.
“Is there a way of not having them tomorrow? I'm afraid Scoups Hyung might commit murder” Dokyeom brought attention to the leader standing on the corner of the kitchen.
Looking like he was plotting an illegal act, Seungcheol scoffs and pushed himself away from the cabinets. “The bare minimum you would expect from someone is that they can be professional. I swear, those people are getting an earful for talking about Hayun within a billion-meter ratio from where I work”.
“It's best to let it rest until tomorrow's performance is done. After we'll probably never see them again, so there's not much point causing any visible disturbance.” Laying a hand on the leader's arm, Woozi tried to make some sort of sense, but all it did was cause Scoups to roll his eyes.
“We can't just act like nothing happened”
“We also can't change anything about the choreography until then” Hoshi butts in and takes a breath trying not to jump in the 'let's hunt them down' train.
“They already know Wonwoo and Vernon heard them trash-talking her, so I'm not letting them have it easy tomorrow.” Jeonghan rolls his eyes and pointed to both Woozi and Hoshi, “I'm speaking my mind the first moment I see those sons of bitches, you're free to wait until the show's over”.
“About that, I don't think we should tell Hayun what happened” Joshua, who had been quiet the entire time, speaks, drawing attention to him. “Not until, as you said, the show is over, and we won't see them again. You know that she's probably going to get disappointed about it”.
“And you expect her to not go running to meet her new 'friends' once we arrive at the venue?” Wonwoo raises an eyebrow, but Mingyu shakes his head and backs the older up.
“We just have to keep her entertained around us. Fill in Dino, Seungkwan, and Myungho later, and have them help with making sure the group doesn't run into her”.
Raising his hand, Vernon casually mumbles “Maybe don't tell Seungkwan, he won't be able to hide his feelings about the whole thing”
“Myungho won't either” Jun comments and the room falls silent at the sound of the remaining members chatting and approaching the kitchen.
“Wow, you make a meeting and forget to call in the main characters” Hayun laughs walking through the room and opening the fridge for a beer “So, when's the food arriving?”
~
Hayun is sitting on the makeup chair, casually watching Scoups and Jeonghan whispering to each other from the mirror's reflection, when a hand lands on her shoulder and another holds out a smoothie for her.
“Whatcha thinking about?” Joshua sits on the chair next to her while Mingyu punctures the drink's lid with a straw.
Without taking her eyes off the mirror, she nods with her head to it. “Those two are up to something”
“Scoups and Jeonghan Hyung? Nah, they're always like that. Sharing secrets and stuff,” Mingyu giggles, shoving the straw inside her mouth and shifting to stand in front of the mirror. “Cute nail polish, when did you have time to get it done?”
“Oh, these are acrylics. This lady was just putting them on” Hayun falls into his trap and began analyzing the design with some occasional comments from the boys.
Peace has seemingly set inside the dressing room, yet it doesn't last long until Dino's loud “Uh?” caught the attention of the members, who turned to see what he and Vernon were doing.
Trying to shut the youngest up, Vernon makes it very obvious to the guys that he had just filled Dino in with the “frenemies” situation. Most of them try to brush it off and not bring more attention to it. Seungkwan, however, approaches them by, very loudly, asking what's up.
“What are you talking about?” He boringly fixes up his outfit. Vernon can feel the burning eyes of Jeonghan on his skull as he tries to deviate the conversation to another topic.
“Did you go see catering already? I heard they had a coffee machine”.
“Wait. Does he not know what happened?” Dino fails to read the room properly and instigates the older boy.
“What happened? Why is everyone sharing secrets all of a sudden? Is the thing you're discussing why Scoups Hyung seems ready to jump someone”.
The timing of events can't be worse, as the makeup artist taps Hayun's shoulder to let her know they were done. Within seconds, the girl gets up and turns to where the three youngest were standing.
“What's with the gossiping? Did Vernon lose his airpods again?” She brushes away from Joshua as he tried to hold her in place and waves off Mingyu when, in a panic, he suggests they should check out the pigeons outside.
“What? No! I mean, yeah! How unfortunate, isn't it?” Vernon jumps around his answers and tries looking for anyone willing to help him out.
“Just tell her about it” Approaching them from the door, Jeonghan, now without the leader's company, shrugs his shoulders, making Hayun raise an eyebrow.
“Jeonghan, at least wait until the day is over,” Joshua speaks through his teeth and the boy rolls his eyes.
“Well, she already knows something is up, and to be fair I don't know what good hiding this will bring. At least, if she feels like doing something about it, she'll have the chance right now”.
“Do something about it? Hadn't we agreed that the best is to wait until the performance is over and just never see them again?”
“What even are you talking about?” Hayun shuts them both up and Jeonghan and Joshua turned to her with annoyed expressions, “Don't even look at me like that. You're the ones mentioning me as if I'm not in the room”.
Placing a hand on her shoulder, Joshua tilts his head a little and speaks softly, “Trust me for a moment here, it's best if you brush it aside. Until later at least, and then we can settle it as you wish”.
“Wha- Just spill it out for fucks sake. I'm going to combust if you don't tell me right now whatever this all means,” Hayun puffs, punching his shoulder. Just as Joshua opens his mouth to say the same thing again, Jeonghan beats him and shoves himself in front of the girl.
“Do you recall those dancers you were planning to go out with yesterday? Yeah, well, turns out they're all little shits who were trash-talking you, and just overall talking crap, yesterday”
“Jeonghan” Joshua repressed the older who does nothing but wave him off.
“Doesn't matter what they said because you're nothing of it, and-” Adverting his eyes for a second, Jeonghan stares to the side, where half of Scoups' body is waving for him through the door. “And, and, you're amazing and all of that. So now go rest your awesome self while I go teach those punks a lesson”.
Zooming past her, Jeonghan runs to the door, where the leader is already back outside. Hoshi, Jun, Woozi, and DK, scream for him before also going out of the door. A very lost, Seungkwan, simultaneously tries to get Vernon to tell him what exactly the dancer said before while shouting for the older to wait for him to also speak his mind.
“I didn't want you to know about this before the performance, but-”
“Whatever, let's make sure nobody dies today” Hayun rolls her eyes and turns around, Wonwoo running from where he was watching everything and holding her by the shoulder.
“Do you want us to go fix that up? It's okay to give them the cold shoulder or just go off if you want to” Nodding, she keeps silent and walks out, bringing the rest of the guys behind her.
The8, who also had just found out about the situation, whispers to Vernon, “Can you believe they had the audacity?”
“I know, right?” The youngest whisper-yelled at him as they made it to the hallway and assessed the situation.
“The next time you even think about opening your mouth to talk about her-” Scoups had his finger pointing at the tallest dancer -who ironically had a few centimeters on him-, while the rest of the members stood next to him nodding and calmly listening to what the leader was saying.
“Oppa, just drop it,” Hayun shouts, walking past them and holding his shoulder.
Annoyingly, Scoups rolled his eyes and turned to her, “What do you mean, drop it?” Thinking for a second, he blinked and turned even more bothered, “Who even told you about this?”
The leader looked around until he found Mingyu, offending the tall guy who made an X in front of his body.
“Doesn't matter who told me. Let's just not lose time doing this” Brushing past him, Hayun now faced the dancers “Look, I'll teach you something right now, so grab it or drop it okay? I don't give a shit that you don't like me, or whatever, but at least be professional because all this situation did was teach me that none of you care about your careers. It's pretty clear by the angry puppy beside me that you just lost any chance of growing inside our brand, so keep this as a lesson and respect the artists you're working with. Also, once we're on stage put on a smile, so my fans won't be able to sense your shit”
“It should be pretty clear by what she said but you definitely don't have a chance to work with any Pledis artist again” Hoshi came from the end of the hallway alongside their manager and choreographer. The latter nodded and added.
“For the sake of the performance, you should all go back to your dressing rooms. You all said whatever was on your mind, so try to refocus during the last few minutes you have”.
“I didn't get to say what was on my mind” While the group was dispersing, DK mumbles on the side and Jun snorts.
“You had a chance, but all you did was stare at them and scowl until Scoups Hyung took the lead”
“I don't care about who said and who didn't say what they wanted” Hayun rolled her eyes, turning to the boys as they arrived in the room. Clasping her hands together, she brings them to her face and smiles, “You all care about me”.
“The fact you still doubted about it after years hurts me” Dokyeom held his chest and frowned, the girl laughs and goes to hug him.
“Group hug?” Seungkwan says uncertainly and Hoshi nods, dragging Woozi with him, “Group hug!”

Note
5, 16, 17, 20, 24, 25, 30 - for dino, ellis, rosa and stella!!!
MC: Dino Galante
5. Who is someone they’ve hurt? Dino would lose his shit if he ever accidentally hurt someone. The only person that has ever been hurt by him is his best friend and that was minor and they forgave him right away anyway. It still killed Dino to know that he’d hurt his friend.
16. What is the most romantic thing someone has done for them? One night when Dino was studying late at his parents work, Ajay came in to surprise him with a Shakespeare themed midnight stroll. It was super cute and lame and Ajay dressed up and recited poetry by a fountain. They sat together for hours, talking and snacking, until the sun started rising and Ajay freaked out because they hadn’t slept. So he drove Dino home and then Dino and Esta demanded he stay to sleep and they cuddled on Dino’s bed until they fell asleep together.
17. Who is their favorite person(s) to spend time with? Ajay will always be his first answer, but he loves spending time with his siblings Esta and Emilio just as much.
20. Would they be the one to propose, the one hoping for a proposal, or no interest in marriage/the equivalent thereof? Dino is way too scared (and young) to think about that right now.
24. What do they think they’re good at, but aren’t? Dino thinks he’s good at making coffee/smoothies, like his parents, but no one has the heart to tell him that he’s not. They just silently suffer through his bad drinks. At this rate, Esta is the only one who would tell hi, but she thinks its too hilarious to.
25. What is something they think they’re bad at, but are actually pretty competent at? Life? 😅 Dino knows he’s not great at things, but he also doesn’t give himself enough credit for what he is good at, such as acting. He’s in theatre because he’s a really good actor but he always thinks everyone else is better than him.
30. What is their ideal sleeping situation? His current one of sleeping with his dog, Cloud, at the end of his bed. Extra points if Ajay is allowed to stay the night.
OC: Ellis Hartley
5. Who is someone they’ve hurt? Other than himself, constantly? He’s hurt all of his friends by pushing them away, as well as everyone else in his life that cares about him. And, according to him, he hurt his fiancé by not being able to save her.
16. What is the most romantic thing someone has done for them? Back before/in med school, he used to go on trips to Tokyo when he had the time. But it didn’t take long for those trips to get less and less frequent, until he couldn’t afford the time or money to go. One day when he was an intern, after a particularly long ER shift, he came home to find that his girlfriend of the time, Evelyn, had decorated his bedroom with sakura blossoms and readied a picnic with sake.
17. Who is their favorite person(s) to spend time with? Ellis doesn’t spend time with people anymore, he prefers to be alone with a glass of scotch.
20. Would they be the one to propose, the one hoping for a proposal, or no interest in marriage/the equivalent thereof? He proposed to Evelyn when he was 27, under a sakura tree by their favourite lake.
24. What do they think they’re good at, but aren’t? Ellis knows what he’s good, or bad, at. Although he does think he’s better at pool than he really is because of the one time back in his twenties that he beat his friend in a bar. It was a fluke.
25. What is something they think they’re bad at, but are actually pretty competent at? Making friends. Even though he’s a dick, people like to be his friend.
30. What is their ideal sleeping situation? With Evelyn. Alone.
MC: Rosa Lee
5. Who is someone they’ve hurt? She’s really truly hurt someone, just stupid high school stuff that gets swept under the rug.
16. What is the most romantic thing someone has done for them? Rosa doesn’t date much, but the most memorable thing was her boyfriend who took her to the arcade and, at the end of their gaming, he won her a giant Gudetama.
17. Who is their favorite person(s) to spend time with? She loves spending time with her cheerleading sisters.
20. Would they be the one to propose, the one hoping for a proposal, or no interest in marriage/the equivalent thereof? She doesn’t have much interest in marriage.
24. What do they think they’re good at, but aren’t? She thinks she’s a good girlfriend but she usually spends too much time at cheer practice and puts everything before her partner.
25. What is something they think they’re bad at, but are actually pretty competent at? Rosa says she can’t draw but actually she can draw cartoons really well. She just sucks at realism.
30. What is their ideal sleeping situation? All by herself in a giant, plush bed. Which is how she sleeps.
OC: Stella Young
5. Who is someone they’ve hurt? She’s hurt her best friend, Reina, before but after a week of icing her out, Reina forgave her. It helped that Stella made her coffee every day during that time.
16. What is the most romantic thing someone has done for them? In high school, her boyfriend of the time took her out for the day when she said she’d never been to an aquarium. He took her around their local one, got her a stuffed penguin, then took her to a café that sold Korean shaved ice, before forcing her to watch Happy Feet with him. She loved every moment of it.
17. Who is their favorite person(s) to spend time with? Reina or Alex. She adores them both.
20. Would they be the one to propose, the one hoping for a proposal, or no interest in marriage/the equivalent thereof? She doesn’t have a current boyfriend.
24. What do they think they’re good at, but aren’t? She thinks she can cook, but in reality she can’t make anything that isn’t pasta. She burns anything that has to go in the oven.
25. What is something they think they’re bad at, but are actually pretty competent at? She doesn’t think she can sing, but everyone else says otherwise. She also thinks she’s too awkward to be a model, but Reina strongly disagrees and uses her for her photography portfolios constantly.
30. What is their ideal sleeping situation? Alone, surrounded by a giant pile of fluffy pillows and fluffier stuffed animals.

Have a Santastic Day - Chapter 1
The weather outside casts the perfect excuse for you to stay inside. You take this as a sign to go to your favorite coffee shop. They have recently hired a pair of monsters as baristas. They are working most days since monsters were not yet covered by minimum wage laws, therefore they earn less than humans. You often have prayed that the lawmakers would be intelligent and humane enough to correct that issue. The two girls have always been chipper to see their regulars and were a great pair of salespeople. Their rhyming names always stuck to the tip of your tongue until you could read the alligator girl’s name tag.
As soon as you stick your head into the warm shop, out of the dreary weather outside, Bratty greets you with her (odd enough) valley girl accent. “Oh, it’s like, _____!”
From the back counter her sister from another mister, Catty cheers, “Ohmygah, hi, _____!” She finishes the current customer’s coffee and hands it to him. “Like, have a good day, Burgerpants!” she cheers. Her kitty grin seems, even more, chipper today.
The orange tom cat monster groans and asks her to not call him that. He nods a greeting to you as he sips his coffee. After a pause to swallow the warm liquid, he smirks and asks, “Staying here for the day, ____?” You feel as though you have walked into an episode of Cheers. You nod and approach the counter and grin at the orange tom slid up beside you, “We’re still on for game night, Thursday, right?”
“Yeah, of course, man,” you answer and tap his nose. “Unless you’re gonna be a scared cat…”
He huffs in mock offense before sputtering out,“What? Me? I’d never let a group of mindless golems take my team down.” He leans in and purrs with an actual purr, “Especially for a certain archery girl that I have been keeping my eye on.” You laugh and push his face away to his slight chagrin. “You have a good day, (first letter of name). I’ll see you around.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” you chuckle, waving at him. “Stay out of trouble, cool cat.” You grin at his soft cough and shy glance away as he heads out the door. If he weren’t always smoking and hitting on everything that moves, I’d consider it. You wave at the gator girl, Bratty and giggle, “How have you been today?”
“It’s been, like, super dead today,” Bratty begins, letting Catty take over the answer, without hesitation.
The purple cat-like girl giggles from the blender as she fills up a cup of a smoothie for the drive-thru,”Yeah, and we’re, like, so bored, here. It’s so lame without someone around, ya know?”
“Yeah, that’s why we love it when you come around,” Bratty continues. “So, the usual?” She means if you were going to the house coffee that you usually covered up with sugar and creamer. It was cheap and you got free refills for it. But, you're craving something sweeter today.
You glance up and see that their menu has expanded since the last time you were here… or the last time you actually looked at the board. You shake your head, “How about a cappuccino? Frozen?”
“We have caramel, french vanilla, mocha, or mint chocolate for those, so far!” Catty cheers from the other side of the bakery display.  She starts rearranging the scones with altered plastic gloves on. The alteration was primitive, making them plastic mitts, but it still allows the girls to work with proper sanitation protocols. “I suggest the mocha, it’s so delicious!”
“Ohmygosh, yes,” coos Bratty. “Or, the vanilla one is really good with, like, the orange-cranberry scones. I love the combination so much!”
“I’ll take those,” you chirp, feeling the overflow of energy from the pair. “That sounds interesting.” You know that Bratty and Catty usually have a good sense of taste. “Have you had more business since you guys opened up at least?” You lean against the partition on the serving station as Bratty rings you up. Her painted claws types out the prices and adds tax after figuring it on a worn out calculator. She tells you a simple 'thanks' as you pay two dollars and some change, telling her to split the remainder with Catty.
After receiving your goods, you bring your bag and jacket to your previously claimed corner of four large, squat armchairs around a square wood table. You curl into the corner and a boot up your computer. After a few moments of fighting with wires, your earbuds are plugged in and placed into your ears. The world slowly fades.
After a half-hour of working, you are distracted by a small, scaly claw waving over the top of your computer. You pause and save everything before responding. You smile at the squat dinosaur monster and ask sweetly, “Yes?”
She fiddles with her own claws and asks in a raspy, squeaky voice, “I’m-I’m so sorry to bother you.” What a nervous little thing. I feel like I should know her... “B-but, I n-noticed that you are here al-almost every day. An-and, you seem really cool from wh-what the baristas say… and…” She pauses to look, back to a blue fishwoman. She gives bright, shark-toothed smile and a thumbs up, holding a box of pastries and a cup carrier with three cups with her freehand. She nods and continues, “I was wondering if you would like to hang out with my girlfriend and our friends and me sometime?”
You blink and look to the fish punk with some curiosity. She raises a brow and waves a hand towards you with a crooked grin. You shrug and nod, answering gently, “You both seem friendly, why not?”
“Re-really?” the clementine dino-dragon nerd enthusiastically asks. “M-may I… may I see your phone?” After you hand it to her, she motions for her girlfriend over and they take a selfie together. The fishlady kisses her girlfriend’s blushing cheek before the light flashed. The dragon? huffs and types onto your phone. Her girlfriend barks a boisterous laugh. “I-I added myself there… with our picture.” She hands it back and blushes darker before adding, “Oh! I’m Alphys and this is my girlfriend. “ You nod and raise a brow at the familiarity that you felt from seeing them together, even.
“I’m Undyne,” the aquatic maid introduces herself in a rough, airy tone. She holds her hand out with a smug grin. You take her hand, only to gasp out your name as she crushes your hand. “Sorry, I’m not used to wimps,” she chuckles with a sympathetic expression. She glances down when her girlfriend elbows her in the hip, glances at what Alphys was pointing out, and immediately groans. “You may be cool, but you and another nerd in our group will like each other. You both like puns.”
You rose your brow and look at the shirt. Right… You gave them a sheepish grin and ask, “What can I say? I wear my heart on my sleeve…” Alphys giggles and Undyne groans, picking up the reptilian woman. You wave nonchalantly, still trying to place where you know them. Perhaps they are fellow patrons of the coffee stop?
Undyne hollers over her shoulder as she exits the building, “She’s gonna message you, nerd. Later!” You waved good-bye back to the giggling Alphys, a shit-eating grin on your face.
Catty and Bratty excitedly chat between them as soon as the door closes. “OMYGAH, they are gonna love her! She is gonna fit in with them!” cheers Catty.
Bratty giggles and adds, “We’re the best at matchmaking, but, like, for friends!”
“Thanks, ladies!” you call from your spot. “I guess y’all know I was feeling bonely .” You stand up to reveal your T-shirt with a ‘winking’ skeleton on a pirate ship on it, with the caption of I can tell you a skele-ton about my ships!
Out of curiosity, you look up Alphys on a social website nearly everyone you knew from the Underground would use. It wasn’t exclusive to Monsters, but not many humans had an account there. Sure enough, it was easy enough to find the pair’s profiles. Something sparks your interest in Alphys bio section. She was the former Royal Scientist and now works on your campus. You snap your fingers. You knew she looked familiar. She worked in a department near where you usually lurked on campus. You liked her latest status talking about how she was trying to drag one of her friends back into the ‘dark side’, meaning science, and calling him a bonehead for not just breaking down already. And comment that you’d be glad to drag someone down with them. With your socialization quota met for the day, you went back pouring over and organizing your notes. Graduation was only two months away, and you had to prove that all the time, effort, money, and tutoring was not for naught. You chuckle at your own word play and mutter to yourself about offering that to Alphys and her boneheaded friend. But, despite your best efforts to remain anti-social and productive, your profile was, for once, busy with the interactions between you, Alphys, and her friend who calls himself “Bone Tired” instead of a real name. Then again, you couldn’t tell if that was a real name with most monsters having unusual monikers compared to humans.
