This is an unformed thought but there is something remarkably compelling about feeling like you’re privy to a secret truth that only the brave few dare to see - I felt this in high school when I was reading a lot about us foreign policy history, and I did walk around feeling like I was looking into a whole different world from the people around me. When you feel like everyone else is oblivious to some horrible truth that you alone know, it fosters a strange mingled pride, despair, and desire to ‘wake them up’. And I want to stress that ‘truth’ doesn’t have to be actually true - just because it’s something like qanon or an antivax conspiracy that you think you’ve awoken to doesn’t make that effect less real or powerful

#something something rallying around isolation & lack of community as its own community #yes I’m at work doing research again so you get my thoughts #like i think this is a factor in how many conspiracies function - but it's also not unique to them #so in some way i do understand the lure of this sort of thinking #even if in my case the reality i believed no one else was seeing was in fact real #and the government *is* lying to you. frequently. there's plenty of real fodder for this sort of 'the truth is being suppressed' sentiment #anyway #there isn't really a point to all this except that when ppl are like 'antivaxxers are so insane how do they believe that?' i get tired #some of them are flat out con artists i think and probably know at some level they are deceiving (and often profiting off) people #but for some of them - it's a pretty easily understandable psychological relation positioning yourself as the suppressed underdog for truth #coronavirus #psychology #conspiracies #vaccine #skravler
