Yagate Kimi ni Naru chapter 34 analysis, prediction and symbolism
…
….
…..
Again, long post and spoilers alert.
Phew. Wow. Chapter 34 is just wow.
Where to start for this chapter. I guess first things first is,
I KNEW IT! I WAS RIGHT! After chapter 32 when we find out that Yuu contemplates to confess to Touko, I was already able to sniff the smell of angst and drama coming in.
Granted I didn’t expect she would confess so soon but man I love how Nakatani-sensei executed the confession scene. It’s not like most shoujo-ai and yuri manga where the confession scene is filled with sparkles, multiple shots and bright light. It’s just straight to the kissing shot. I was like, “YEAH YUU! GET HER!” And we’ve got to remember that this is the first time that Yuu initiates a kiss and that speaks loudly and makes us readers go crazy! Because remember, that Yuu is very stubborn and like the end of chapter 32 said, Yuu is changing and we know this ever since she shows her first ever desire to change Touko. This just shows how much Yuu is willing to do anything for Touko.
And then we get to the part where I predicted would happen, where Touko’s fear of being loved comes resurfacing. I’ve seen some people venting out their frustration over her rejection to Yuu’s confession. But can we really call it a rejection? Nakatani-sensei has clearly showed us both characters’ perspective in this scene. First we get to see it from Yuu’s point of view and sure, it does feel like it was rejection because of Touko’s apology.
But when we see it from Touko’s point of view, we find out that her apology comes from her feeling guilty over making Yuu suffer for so long and taking advantage of her. For me, this internal realization speaks some length because now Touko knows how much Yuu has done for her, including holding her feelings back.
And then before she could even respond properly to Yuu, her guilt-ridden apology comes out and Yuu mistakes this apology as a rejection, but WE know that it’s NOT! It’s not a rejection and in fact, Touko herself WANTS to chase after Yuu but once again, is afraid and restrained by her fear.
Now, we don’t know how things will go from here and I have several scenarios in my mind right after I finished reading the raw chapter (I was THAT impatient lol). I can imagine there will be 2-3 chapters of angst and drama. I even asked myself, would Yuu act normally and stay by her side after this, as if nothing happened? Considering Touko said this, under the bridge.
Despite her running away and calling herself an idiot with anguish splattered on her face, I believe that our sweet, sweet, innocent Yuu will still trust that Touko would change, just like how much she changed since the last time they were under the bridge. And knowing Yuu, she would perhaps do anything for Touko, and PERHAPS she would act normal and silently waits for Touko’s proper response, but we know that Touko will still feel extremely guilty for leaving her hanging. I kind of would like this to happen because Yuu has done so much for Touko, and NOW it’s Touko’s turn to do something.
I also have a feeling that these two won’t be having a one-to-one interaction for some time until Touko’s trip to Kyoto, and Sayaka might notice the dynamic change between these two. Perhaps during the trip, Sayaka uses this opportunity to talk to Touko about it, and god knows perhaps she would use that chance to confess to Touko. And I can see that Sayaka is the type of person who would do anything for her happiness (considering how she was willing to hide her feelings to keep their friendship and protect her from the guilt of not reciprocating her feelings) so there’s possibility she would convince Touko that to be loved is nothing to worry about and it was be cruel of her for leaving Yuu hanging. Hence, making Touko realize how stupid she has been and makes her go to Yuu.
That is only the first scenario that I thought of. The second scenario I have in mind is more or less the same as scenario 1, except this time, Sayaka confesses during the trip and declares that she wouldn’t let Touko that easily and she wants to see between her and Yuu, which one of them would show whose love is stronger and if Yuu really does love Touko, she wouldn’t just keep silent and give up. Heck, in this second scenario I actually have envisioned that before the trip, Touko might go to Miyako’s cafe and gets consulted by the same person that Sayaka talked to about her feelings. Although this almost unlikely to happen, since having Touko to meet Miyako would be really out of nowhere since, unlike Sayaka, she doesn’t even grasp the feeling that Miyako’s gay. Unless Sayaka advises her to go and talk to Miyako, I don’t think this would happen though.
And for scenario 3 (perhaps the most cliche and least likable) either one of them would avoid each other to spare themselves from the awkwardness and not to mention due to the lack of student council activities and meetings, they might drift apart until someone smacks (perhaps literally) some sense in Touko. And unlike scenario 1 and 2, here Sayaka doesn’t confess to Touko in order to spare her the guilt and make her less confused.
Now onto the symbolism. In my last analysis on YagaKimi, I’ve mentioned about the railway of fate that tends to be the location where Yuu and Touko’s relationship takes a turn. I noticed that when this does happen, it takes a good, positive turn. Do notice that, that’s where 1) they had their first kiss, 2) Yuu internally admits she wants to love Touko and 3) also the time when Yuu invites Touko to her room to talk about Touko’s true feelings about herself. This time, we have the bridge symbolism. The last time when our favourite couple came here, Yuu decided to mention Mio to Touko, which we know is a pretty sensitive topic for her.
(The bridge of destiny. Idk it just sounded cool in my head)
At the same scene, we get the heartbreaking moment where Yuu says that she can’t fall in love with her, and she makes those promises. While the scene in chapter 10 can be seen either positive or negative, I saw it as something that starts rather negative since in that chapter, Yuu practically promises to not fall in love with Touko, but later on, she fails to keep that promise and for us it’s a positive thing. Basically this bridge symbolizes a bad beginning but has positive ending, or at least that’s how I feel it would be. Notice how that the railway is just on top of the bridge? It’s like Nakatani-sensei is using the bottom of the railway (bridge) as the intersecting area for Yuu and Touko, meanwhile the railway acts as the path that leads the train (Yuu and Touko) forward. And the fact that they didn’t leave the bridge together shows us that things are not over yet, and just like chapter 10, the conclusion will happen in the future, and hopefully it would be a happy conclusion.
(The bridge supporting the railway symbolizes that changes need to occur for their relationship to take move forward)
And last but not least, the predictions. Some people have predicted that now that Yuu has confessed, YagaKimi is nearing to its end and I agree with them. The problem with most school life love stories is that it usually ends after the MC finally gets the “I love you” line from their love interest and they start dating. If not that, it ends after they graduate from high school. In YagaKimi’s case, Touko’s going to graduate first since she’s one grade ahead of Yuu. And this may become the final arc where they need to think about their future and their relationship after high school. I actually imagined the arc would be similar to Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji where after their education, they get settled into a career (Touko perhaps getting into stage theater career) and live together happily ever after. But naaaaahhhhh it feels too long and cliche and Nakatani-sensei doesn’t do cliche.
