i say mostly cause i just recently broke the f2p status and bought bp for ppyong

i refuse to buy packs and in the future i'll prob be very selective over who i pick for bp (aka i wont buy every bp), so for the most part i'll just be having the f2p experience

this section is for me to look back on in the future when i do progress posts. i'll break down this section into multiple parts similar to my prev post for consistency

STORY

honestly, its interesting in concept. since sadly only 1 chapter has released btwn now and my last post so thoughts havent really drastically changed

ch5 imo wasnt really a full on hades chapter. yes, it takes place in hades and yes we get some intro abt hades, but i think this was supposed to act more like a bridge to tartaros, which is prob why we didnt have any h scenes w any hades chars aside from levi. ofc we'll get back to it being hades-focused eventually, but the story for a while is most likely gonna pivot to tartaros bc of that big lore drop abt mammon at the end

i assume we'll prob be introduced to the cherubs in tartaros bc of selaphiel txting us near the end + it being mentioned at the end that theres a hub of angels in the lab, and hopefully part 2 of mammon's h scene. it was strange at first for mammon to only have 1 h scene, compared to satan or levi that had 2, but w him implying theres probably gonna be a part 2 in his h scene + we'll most likely see him again in ch6 (or however many chapters tartaros will be played out), we'll prob experience part 2 in his home country. tbh that prob just me inhaling MASSIVE hopium since mammon isnt rlly that popular but i can dream ok-

i hope us being in tartaros doesnt last for just 1 chapter. you cant condense the experiments tartaros went through to create a clone of mammon only for them to fail + bring up the fact that the seed is prob also in tartaros in just 1 chapter. well— technically you can, but not at the pace chapters are at atm. chapters have roughly 15 parts of story on the main branch, and imo that much info abt tartaros cant be condensed into 1 chapter unless if they make the story bits like WAY longer than what they normally do

GAMEPLAY

tl;dr as an endgame player, its too easy 💀

working on the spreadsheet ever since the games 1st month of release and now just recently testing multiple team comps, the "meta" is so monkos HSHFJDJ

this game is INSANELY dependent on you having more than 1 dps/tank light card. light is also just an unstoppable element and i wish the game was balanced a bit more to let other elements shine

enemies are now way too easy to defeat. ik i prob shouldnt be complaining abt this but pls im a pgr and neural cloud player at heart I NEED SOME CHALLENGE

ch3 and ch4 were prob the most tedious and awful chapters, but at least they actually made me think when it comes to battles. now i just place down chars and let it play in the bg while i go do smth else. ofc this may just be bc i have a team that im comfortable w using everywhere, but id like to see at least a bit more "challenge" outside of holy coin portal

also, for weekly achievements, lvling artifacts is not a great requirement

i only pull when theres a new s rank or when mammon is moved to standard, so its very, VERY rare compared to avg users. having the artifact req is essentially forcing me to pull during those gaps just so i could fulfill a weekly req which sucks. i also dont need to lvl anymore artifacts in general for my team comp. lvl 15 is the bare minimum i need to get through all content w ease, anything after that is just a small boost tbh

on the note of daily/weekly requirements, there needs to be more of them

i mean in a sense of theres still gonna be 9 daily achievements, but you get more options on HOW you get to the 9 daily achievement req. most gachas that ive played always have more options than necessary to fulfill the overall requirement to get all rewards, so having this strict number w strict reqs is rlly not that great tbh

RESOURCES

thoughts from last time still havent rlly changed. pies and candies especially are still rng dependent which sucks, and now there gonna revamp pancakes while also keeping the old pancakes ???? theres way too many currencies (w some even having very little to no use) atp which can and will get overwhelming for new players

GACHA

i hate solomon seals. you can tell that red keys were supposed to be the main gacha currency if you ever look at old packs, but smth happened along the way and now we have seals

pity is also way too high for what we're earning atm. based off of f2p earnings, every week we get roughly 1 pull of red keys, maybe 2 pulls of yellow keys (red and yellow keys are more dependent on the key boxes which again, dependent on rng), and 1 pull of solomon seals. this doesnt include the stuff earned outside of dailies/weeklies, and i think there should be more ways to earn said currency through dailies/weeklies and not be so dependent on either paying or pulling chars

speaking of pity, i wish we had pity for both of the standard banners

i also wish theyd separate char and artifacts into their own banners. that way, if someone has a char but needs their sig, they can just pull in the artifact-only banner and try to get said sig

tl;dr in general i wish everything wasnt so strict and rng dependent, also wish numbers made sense like why do we get at least 5 red keys a week when 1 pull is 3, JUST GIVE ME 6 KEYS ATP

so yeah thats all for now lmao. im pretty sure i have a lot more to say abt this game but my minds at a blank atm, so ig thatll be saved for the next progress post which will be around 1st anni

ranting abt the Abyss Stigma frame BC as someone who likes character design, it was a huge let down for me

I rlly hate Bianca's new Abyss Stigma frame. Like, okay, she can be goth, but why PURPLE??? Bianca's main colours are white and royal blue. Mainly white. how does one fuck this up??? Why is there so much purple on Veritas??? Liv's colour palette swap with Solateer makes sense; all white, no pink BC she almost fucking died and she has an angel thing. But Bianca??? Purple??? WHY. Like if you wanted goth mommy Bianca either do a) monochrome or b) all black with white and blue. DON'T GIVE ME THIS FUCKING PURPLE BULLSHIT.

I'm actually losing it everyone else get colour palettes that make sense for their new frames! Nanami's new mecha frame was mostly grey and white with hints of orange/yellow BC she's fire element, okay got it. Karenina's color palette stayed the same. Great. Lucia has the same black and red across her three (four including Alpha ig) frames and it looks and feels different every single time. You couldn't keep Bianca's color palette consistent? I could forgive the shift from royal blue to purple of she was still in mostly white but noooo let's make everything this ass shade of purple and make her emo!

I'm gonna cry they butchered Bianca honestly she is such a nothing character. She's already developed during the main story she's gotten past all of her yeye ass drama and she still go a third frame and Bianca centric story. Instead of, I don't know, tying up loose ends for someone who has barely had any development (Lee) or bringing back a character who just sort of disappeared from the story (Wata, Sophia and Chang Yu but he played a huge part in the Lost Chapter story and the general lore of PGR) they went with mommy milkies again.

Listen I love tits as much as the next gal but plz either do something interesting with her character, make her look nice, or give her meaningful cameos.

Top Ten Microsoft Games

It’s getting on for the time of year when I’d normally be thinking about E3, and the various E3-related events and announcements. This was going to be a banner year: huge new console releases from Sony and Microsoft, big game rumblings from Nintendo… there was an awful lot to get excited about, and an awful lot of New Stuff perched expectantly on the horizon.

And then, well, 2020 happened.

Obviously things being what they are, the conventions have all been cancelled or postponed, and we’re instead getting a succession of online reveals, spaced out over a longer interval. As such, instead of my customary “Ridiculous Predictions” list that I’d do around mid-June or whenever, I’m instead going to celebrate the wonder that is the videogame with a short series of gaming-themed Top Tens. There won’t really be a predictions list, although as we approach Microsoft’s next announcement video in July I will start talking about my hopes and dreams for the Series X; for the most part, however, the next few weeks will be me looking back at things I’ve loved or things I’ve found interesting in a variety of games.

To kick things off then, Microsoft. Or Microsoft Games Studios, or whatever we’re choosing to call them; the gamey bit of the Microsoft Empire. Although they rarely get spoken of as one of the “great” publishers, they’ve produced an awful lot of classics in their time. One of the first PC games I ever played was the Microsoft Golf game that came bundled with my computer, and for the most part it’s been uphill since there. I definitely associate the company with a lot of great games from the febrile period when my Now-Wife and I were newly be-coupled; the Age of Empire series and the various Madness titles in particular. And that’s all before we get onto the Xbox of it all.

So, then, here we are: the greatest games ever to sport the word “Microsoft” on the cover. If we don’t include the FPS game hidden in Excel, of course.

Fable II (Lionhead Studios, 2008): my favourite RPG, a beautiful pastoral parody of English fairytales and legends, shot through with Python-esque humour. Freedom of choice, supremely easy mechanics, progressive politics, a dog… it has so much that I love. Almost perfect.

Halo 3 (Bungie, 2007): Halo remains, in my opinion, the greatest shooter franchise of all time, with perfectly-honed mechanics and a thrilling gameplay loop, combined with a compelling and iconic universe. 3 offers an epic conclusion to the original trilogy whilst leveraging the power of the Xbox 360 to deliver expansive vistas and gorgeous graphics.

Crackdown (Realtime Worlds, 2007): taking the open-world city concept of GTA but injecting superpowers, this is a crazy playground of high-octane freedoms. The joy of scaling skyscrapers, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, is sublime, as is the freeform campaign structure. Sheer fun.

Forza Horizon 4 (Playground Games, 2018): the Horizon games are terrific freeform driving experiences, with as much joy coming from touring the countryside as actual racing (which is still great). Each instalment offers refinement, but it’s the British setting of 4 that I adore.

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (Ensemble Studios, 1999): in the Golden Age of RTS games, Age of Empires was one of the greats; taking elements of Civilization’s tech-evolution and history, it combined a greater degree of base-building with refined combat that offered less of a tank-rush dynamic than other games in the genre. Still plays great.

Project Gotham Racing 3 (Bizarre Creations, 2005): PGR games were gloriously fun arcade racers that offered a new way to play with their Kudos skill-ranking system. The variety of different game types available offered variety, meaning even poor racers (er, like me) could enjoy it and never get bored. Plus, hidden Geometry Wars!

Viva Pinata (Rare, 2006): an ingenuous garden-building sim that has you cultivate the perfect habitat for a range of beautiful paper-craft cryptids. Unflashy yet graphically gorgeous, with charm by the bucketload, and animals you can’t help fall in love with. Absolutely crying out for a new iteration on the Series X.

Midtown Madness 2 (Angel Studios, 2000): before PGR, before the Xbox even, the Madness series offered a wide range of driving fun (from bikes to, er, monster trucks). The open-world cities of Midtown were revolutionary at the time, and the gameplay offered loads of moments for hilarious hijinks as you crashed minis into buses whilst people leapt magically out of harm’s way.

Gears of War 3 (Epic Games, 2011): Gears injected fresh blood into the shooter genre, with its cover-based mechanics and ingenious weaponry making each encounter something of a tactical action-based puzzle game. Gears 3 probably is the best as, like Halo 3, it gives us a storyline conclusion and truly epic battles, and dives deep in the series’ trademark melodrama.

Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding (Access Software, 2001): a relatively under-sung OG Xbox launch game, Amped took the Tony Hawk template of racking up skill points with board-based stuntwork, but plonked it on a relatively-open mountainside that hurtled past as you tried to balance speed with precision.

So there we are – my favourite Microsoft games. No Minecraft, because whilst it obviously is a Microsoft game at this point, I feel like they bought it when it was already a classic. And a lot of Xbox titles, too, which I guess is unsurprising. I really hope over the next couple of months we see some games that will one day secure a place on this list! Maybe a new Perfect Dark…?
