Summary:

In the cyber city Tom Sawyer, society revolves around earning "Love," akin to receiving likes on social media. Citizens of this augmented reality exchange Love for public services and appearance-changing avatars via the Decoration Customizer, also known as "Deco," a hologram device implanted in an individual's eyes from early childhood. Under the government's careful management, the people of Tom Sawyer live a peaceful existence, outside the occasional appearance of Phantom Zero, a mysterious criminal who brings all Love to zero within their vicinity.

Berry, a mischievous girl fascinated by Phantom Zero, lives comfortably in the system of Tom Sawyer until her Deco malfunctions, enabling her to see a camouflaged prankster named Hack. Believing Hack to be Phantom Zero, Berry chases after the suspect and, in the process, begins to uncover society's most well-kept secrets. As it turns out, Hack is not the only person living outside the system's rules—and the vibrant colors of Tom Sawyer hide a darker nature.

Propaganda:

Without any spoilers, Hack can easily be interpreted as nonbinary in some sort of way (whether they’re transmasc, transfem, or otherwise androgynous/neutral/other aligned) and their birth sex is never revealed, which is a plus for me. Furthermore, it’s literally what would happen if you made a fun, hard science fiction series in the style of a Ted Chiang novel but aimed at kids and written rather optimistically. It still has the hard sci-fi elements of critiquing AI and social capital systems and whatnot, but it also has an upbeat, cheerful tone of a children’s show, and you know what? I really like cheerful, intelligent kids shows! It’s something that I could not only watch on my own, but also watch with my conservative family without being seen as inappropriate, and it’s a genuinely cute and fun show!

I also like the colorful, free-flowing art style, thanks to Science SARU’s art, and the diverse characters, not only in characterization, but in race, body type, age, and gender. And the plot twists in this show really excited me too! This is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I genuinely recommend people to watch this show as well! Sadly, it’s not dubbed, likely because of its relative unpopularity, but the Japanese voice cast is another plus, especially Berry’s seiyuu! Berry is genuinely her first voice role, and she KNOCKS it out of the part, especially at making Berry’s cheerfulness stand out. Another good point: the MUSIC. With diverse mixes of electropop, hyperpop, and bit-based sounds, it genuinely has such a unique soundtrack compared to a lot of 2020s era anime’s yakousei and anisong based soundtracks which, while I like some yakousei and anisong tracks, I’m just not fond of both genres.

Trigger Warnings: Unfortunately, as a Science Saru show, Yurei Deco is unfortunately very flashy on the eyes and thus very unsafe for epileptics, the photosensitive, and autistic people who have trouble with eyestrain, among others. There are also depictions of classism that, while shown as wrong and not good in the narrative, might trigger those who experienced class-based abuse.

#L2: BNA: Brand New Animal

Summary:

Throughout history, humans have been at odds with Beastmen—a species capable of changing shape due to their genetic "Beast Factor." Because of this conflict, Beastmen have been forced into hiding. Anima City serves as a safe haven for these oppressed individuals to live free from human interference.

During a festival celebrating the town's 10th anniversary, Michiru Kagemori, a human who suddenly turned into a tanuki, finds that Anima City is a far cry from paradise. After witnessing an explosion in the square, she is confronted by Shirou Ogami, a seemingly indestructible wolf and sworn protector of all Beastmen. As they pursue the criminals behind the bombing, the two discover that Michiru is anything but an ordinary Beastman, and look to investigate her mysterious past and uncanny abilities. Could she turn out to be the missing link between Humans and Beastmen?

Propaganda:

This is one of the first few anime I watched when I was getting into it, so I'm rather fond of it. Though the show is only one season, overall it's pretty solid and ties everything together at the end. I also really like how they utilize color in the animation (it especially makes fight scenes more interesting to watch). The worldbuilding they have with the beastmen is pretty neat as well. This anime is good if you're looking for something quick to watch.

Trigger Warnings: There is some violence, and since the characters are animals, that may fall under animal cruelty. There are a few parts in the show where the colors get pretty intense, so that could be considered flashing lights. There is racism, as the beastmen are discriminated against by humans.

so, folks, I’m here to start another heinous text post series!

once again, we have results on a FEH poll -- and once again, IS has fucked up the vote counting beyond repair, leaving me filled with desire to tally things up nicer and properer. which I will try to do anyway, but the only numbers published were the ones above their top 100, so I guess we’ll technically have some missing information

but then, I thought, hey, while I’m at it, why don’t I offer some pointed critique as to whether the most voted characters deserve their votes?

let’s start with the professors. below the cut: the top 15 most wanted teachers in Fire Emblem, and whether they are any good as professors!

#1: BYLETH (10574 votes across all genders and forms)

yeah, yeah, that figures; if you don’t want to think too hard about this, why not go with the character who is only known as Professor, right?

that said, I’ve had classes with professors whose facial experssions never change and whose dialogue choices don’t matter, and let me tell you, regardless of who was controlling them behind the scenes, I can’t recommend that experience

#2: ROBIN (3110 votes across all genders)

ehm, sure? I mean, if taking over the plot and arbitrarily succeeding at everything you try are teachable skills, sign me up I guess-

#3: CECILIA (2426 votes)

our first extant personality is here, and not a bad choice at all! I mean, if her curriculum is whatever Lilina is doing, then I’d learn happily. even if she can be astonishingly blunt and I happen to have weaknesses and insecurities-

look, I get it; those of you who played fates are ever so often telling me that, despite all the hype, there’s an actual character there somewhere beneath the slab of meat. I’ve heard you tell me a million times by now. but please, by all means, explain to me what this can possibly represent if not 1303 people with a teacher kink

and yeah, I hope you’re bracing yourself for that already, because we’re going to be running into multiple characters who are obvious horny votes. potentially even some who are sneaky horny votes -- like, sure, Cecilia is a good teacher, but she’s also the series’ first bangable teacher, and I have no way of knowing where one ends and another begins out of her 2426

er, I don’t even... are people counting it as “teaching” if she sometimes talks exposition at the player character? I mean, even as far as that goes, exposition usually falls to the other people in her team anyway...... hmmmmm

like yeah, regardless, she’s passably nice -- opinionated, sure, but that doesn’t usually grate much -- and dedicated to self-improvement... like, it’s not that she has any outstanding qualities for a teacher, but she’s already a better candidate than probably half this list

#7: CLAUDE (869 votes across all appearances)

869 votes total, of which 619 are for his post-timeskip appearance. nice. (and also, booyaka booyaka)

... I guess you can accuse this one of being a horny vote also, because I mean, it’s claude, he does that to everyone -- but considering that Dimitri didn’t get into the top 15 despite what Erica Lindbeck would have wanted, I think it’s safe to assume that this is at least partially about Claude’s brains.

that said, though, being clever doesn’t alone make someone a good teacher, so, what does he really have going for him? well, he’s very eloquent -- although he’s never struck me as the good-at-being-the-center-of-attention type. and he’s funny, which is a thing that a lot of people look for in a teacher, although let me tell you, years of cram school have really shown me to only want that in a secondary capacity,

... wait, on second thought, how many people voted for this just because of Joe Zieja?

wow, I can’t believe 852 people have been completely duped! ... well, he did accidentally teach Mareeta how to Astra, but that sounds like it had nothing to do with what he was doing at all. I guess it’d be nice to discover a hidden talent just like that, but it doesn’t seem to be something we can rely on Shannam for. just like everything else

incidentally, I’m told there’s going to be a lot of random Jugdrali nobodies on the next categories too -- I’m guessing that must be the newest FE Reddit mob prank. too bad there’s probably not going to be a category that Dorcas can take over

I’m not going to call this an outright horny vote, but one thing I can tell you all for sure is that nobody who’s voting for this wants to have an actual class where things get done

like, sure, she’s not without her share of admirable wisdom, but we’re talking about someone who openly felt like jumping into a lake when someone told her they look up to her and think she has made good decisions

#10: TITANIA (818 votes across all appearances)

the very first character on this list I can’t fault or make fun of at all, and it’s taken us the entire top 10 to get there. bravo, Fire Emblem fans. and bravo IS for splitting the tellius votes again, making her rank even worse on the official list

#11: EDELGARD (766 votes across all appearances)

what. I mean, sure, she’s a fantastic public speaker, but like, I hope you haven’t had enough yet of the teacher who boasts about how they WILL fail you

#12: SETETH (733 votes, possibly with uncounted change)

being taught by seteth is, presumably, like being taught by snape, minus all of the venom. solid choice, I suppose!

plus, if we’re following up on the Joe Zieja thing, I’d really be lining up to take classes from Mark Whitten. or Allegra Clark. or Christian La Monte, but that’d just be because he’s adorable and I’d watch him doing like anything

I’m like, at least halfway sure that’s the one I voted for. hell yeah!

what’s there not to love? sure, he might be a spot awkward, but that unmatchable passion for knowledge is one of the best traits to have as a teacher, not to mention that he’s humble, happy to teach, and even good with kids! er, other people’s kids, that is. kids other than Hugh

(technically, he’s also voiced by Joe Zieja, but eh, I doubt anyone’s thought of that)

if Seteth was the Snape pick, this is the Dumbledore -- again, without the venom, if he does have skeletons in his closet. that said, he forgets to eat just because he probably doesn’t have to anymore, so y’know, brace yourself for how that translates into keeping the class organized

(incidentally, his student Pent just barely missed my cut, as he is #16)

you know what? it’s not that Lukas isn’t kind and passionate for knowledge and a bunch of other things that make a good teacher, but I regret to say I am 100% calling this both a horny vote and a voice actor vote. a horny for the voice actor vote, if you will. you’re not looking for a class, you’re looking for an ASMR roleplay of one

alright folks, I’m back for more of those results from the anniversary poll; once again, I’ll be counting them as properly as I can because IS sure as hell can’t, and in the process, I will also judge whether the fans have spoken good choices

this time, we’ll be counting and criticizing the top 15 dancing duos! (disclaimer: I don’t dance. I still will attempt to comment on everyone else’s dancing)

#1: BERKUT & RINEA (9313 votes)

tumblr won’t let me simply put two images next to each other in a text post, and I can’t be fucked to put them together in such a way that doesn’t make them un-transparent, so I’ll be putting them together with a simple color background; it’s a spot uglier and I will probably fail to spot some wonky pixels, but c’est la vie

anyways, I don’t like it, but like Byleth before, this is a natural afk pick; they’re some of a very small subset of characters in the series that we actually see dancing with each other, in a proper cutscene. a cutscene that, in fact, basically exists to tell us that they look good dancing, so one’s not wrong to vote for them here, I suppose. there are, in fact, a lot of people in this world who are fantastic performers and also would throw their spouses in a fire if they figured it’d make them feel good about themselves again

#2: OLIVIA & INIGO (2474 votes, including Laslow)

this is actually sweet, though, mother-son dancing duo and all. one thing I do have to mention, though, is that you’d have to hope that our hypothetical dance-off was announced plenty of time in advance, there’s so much that could bring a performance between them crashing and burning if they don’t hash it all out for themselves first

#3: EDELGARD & DIMTIRI (1871 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

they sure do look fantastic, dancing with other people with their backs completely to each other,

might as well stuff this strangely popular nothing-of-a-choice with a little additional note: these paired votes are going to be especially harrowing on the split vote front, because any combination of two characters who both have split votes means they can be combined with each other in 4 different ways. like, most people probably won’t combine, say, someone’s PoR self with someone else’s RD self, but properly unsplitting votes in this is going to be a lot more of a challenge. and that’s to say nothing of byleth; there is a whopping 16 different ways to combine Byleth and any one Three Houses character

ETA: I. completely forgot about the thing where edelgard tried to teach dimitri to dance when they were young. okay, that kind of tracks. but also like, whomst the fuck got the idea that whatever they were doing there was building up to elegance

#4: ELIWOOD & NINIAN (1495 votes)

I’m getting the lingering feeling that this fandom is a lot better at pointing out good dancers than good teachers-

this one’s another amazing pick; sure, not one you have to think a lot about, since they’re oft-shipped and one of them is an actual dancer -- but the beauty of it is that even the ostensible weak link still has much offer, between his flawless elegance and a love of dancing that we at the very least knows is in his lineage

let’s just hope eliwood would still prefer to keep the “special dances” private though-

#5: BYLETH & CLAUDE (1163 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

speaking of the ballroom cutscene again, man, Claude sure has left an impression on us all back there-

still, we don’t actually see the dance, and it’s probably better that we don’t -- I wouldn’t bet that Byleth is any more expressive with their moves than they are with their face. there’s really not very much of a reason to vote for this other than wanting to insert yourself into a situation where one dances with Claude. and I mean, mood, but let’s focus, please-

#6: OLIVIA & AZURA (996 votes)

this is just a copout, though. this is like if I asked you about the best food in your town and you just told me that technically Gordon Ramsey was born there. ooo, hot take alert, two unrelated professional performers can probably put on a decent performance together!

at least their theme colors together make the trans flag, so I’ll give all 996 of you that much-

#7: ALM & CELICA (990 votes)

was there like an actual thing where they dance, or were people picking this just because they’re good-looking and married? because like, in the absence of evidence, I cannot and will not assume that Alm is a remotely passable dancer.

in fact, here’s the drill: for this section, I can’t actually blame people if they’re just hornyvoting -- being hot is kind of a point-plus for this -- but I can and will blame them if they’re voting for their ships with no regard as to whether they’d look good dancing. so, accusations of hornyvoting shall make way -- to accusations of shipvoting! I believe that’s also going to happen on the other paired category, even if that one is a lot less about the chemistry (presumably)

#8: NILS & NINIAN (884 votes)

this kind of a copout again, but it’s also a family dance again, BUT most importantly one of these two is not actually a dancer. like, sure, he plays the flute, but this isn’t a flute-and-dance duo poll, it’s a dance poll! although I mean, it does mean he must have a good notion of rhythm, and from the sprites we can definitely tell he’s got a spring in his step when he plays, and Ninian can teach him too, so... maybe? oh well, it’d be cute to see them try

#9: SIGURD & DEIRDRE (790 votes)

eh, I’m gonna call shipvoting on this one too. like, sure, they’re both hot and they’re in love with each other, but even if you leave aside the likelihood that Deirdre was raised too shelthered to have danced like ever, any dancing they’d know of would be totally incompatible, considering their entirely distinct backgrounds.

I suppose I will lend credence to the idea that Sigurd’s at least experienced as far as dancers go; it’s not like he was studying back at that academy,

#10: BYLETH & EDELGARD (735 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

since most of the votes on this are for post-timeskip edelgard, this appears to be unrelated to the ballroom scene, for once

that said, I can’t think of anything to this other than regular shipvoting -- and not even shipvoting of much quality, because besides the above-mentioned on whether byleth can dance, I have a nagging feeling that the kind of dancing Edelgard would genuinely be interested in would be strictly for fun, without any sort of elegance or other things that an outside participant would enjoy watching

#11: TSUBASA & CAEDA & KIRIA & THARJA (687 votes)

don’t let the fact that I found a transparent tsubasa but not a transparent kiria distract you from the absolute trainwreck that resulted from the naming scheme used in FEH for TMS#FE characters crashing into the notation I’m using for the duos here- ahem, well, please be distracted from both of those things, anyway

assuming this is just between the two mirage users and we’re not talking about the most awkward foursome in history, well... I once again have not played TMS#FE, so uh, they sure are both pop idols and I think people ship them, I guess?

#12: MARTH & CAEDA (596 votes across all appearances)

I mean... there’s a lot that can be said about their individual qualities and their dynamics, but I have absolutely no idea how any of it would translate into a ballroom. and if we’re any inclined to believe that skill with words and skill with bodily expression tend to be opposite skillsets, then theyyyy are both screwed.

I get it, I do. they both look sparkly beautiful and haute and classy and like everything around them is prettier for them being there. but let me categorically tell you that neither of these two dance.

neither of these two dance because one, Pent is an absolute potato, and two, Pent specifically chose Louise because she didn’t try to impress him with a dance.

so, we’re in for another post about the results from the anniversary poll, but hem, haw...

I already did an entire text post series evaluating fire emblem villains! and this next post will be about the category “villains you just can’t hate”, so like, I might not have as much to say as critique this time, because I’ve already said the vast majority of what I’ve had

so let’s tally up those top 15, and in the meantime, I will just focus on this one simple question: can you hate these?

#1: LYON (4176 votes)

if we’re reducing this category to “best villain”, then hell yeah, Lyon is a worthy candidate; not the one I would’ve picked, but definitely a runner-up. validates my mawing about how he should be in smash,

but let’s talk about whether you can hate Lyon. can you? that’s the thing: sure you can! you don’t have to, but he’s such an incredibly mutlifaceted villain, anything from love to hate goes
