~.~
Growing up, you always knew you were different. You couldn't hear the ocean waves, couldn't listen to the music of your clan for celebrations. You couldn't even harmonize with your mother as she sings to lull you to sleep.
Being born deaf, your parents tried so hard to pray to Eywa for a sign. The Tsahìk, Ronal, tried every herb and technique she knew, but nothing could change who you were.
What Eywa had decided for you to be.
You never blamed Eywa though, for the Great Mother had blessed you to feel a connection to her. You could feel her in the sand; the warmth of the sun that she blessed you with, the coolness of the ocean as you swam to admire the creatures she's created.
Even as a small child you had been drawn to the beauty of the Pandora.
The smallest sea shells you would collect and braid into your hair, stringing some together to make a necklace, bracelet, or head peice. The brightest floral you would gather to present to friends and family, just because the beauty of them made you think of others.
Ao'nung had only been eight when he met you for the first time. While training with his father on spear throwing he had caught sight of you collecting sea shells.
He was so distracted by you, he grabbed the spear wrong and cut his finger. Letting out a small hiss of pain, he instantly sucked on it, causing his father to gaze at him and then at you. Tonowari couldn't help but chuckle, "I see the silent beauty has caught your eye," Ao'nung was confused by his father's words, but quickly denied having even spotted you.
"Well that's too bad, because here she comes right now," sure enough you had seen the leader with his son, Ao'nung and had started over in their direction when you saw the big was hurt.
Ao'nung could only feel himself freeze as you closed the distance fast, suddenly reaching out to grab his hand as he tried to back away,
"H-hey! What are you doing?!" Ao'nung flinched as you pressed on his finger, the one he'd cut being too caught up looking at you. You never said anything, just brought out a healing leaf from your hip pouch and wrapped his finger quickly and efficiently.
"Thank you," he mumbled, you smiled and let go of his hand, signing to him, 'Would you like to play after training?' It had puzzled him why you didn't just ask out loud, but after looking to his father for assurance, he nodded to you causing you to smile and nod, turning back the way you'd come and headed away.
"Father, why didn't she just ask me?" Ao'nung questioned, looking up at Tomowari who smiled sadly at him, "she is deaf my son, she cannot speak for she never learned how, she cannot hear you," Ao'nung didn't feel any different towards you, maybe more curious, but he never felt like you were weird.
~.~
After that day many years ago, Ao'nung had grown, and so did his love for you. What started out as amazement and adoration as children, had since grown into feeling as if you were the only one for him.
The way you helped his sister with day to day chores, such grace and beauty weaving baskets and collecting herbs for his mother. The complete definition of selfless as you taught the children of the clan their sign, who else but you with your patience and grace.
The tingles you left on his body when you would tap his hand, shoulder, arm, anything to get his attention. You left him yearning for your attention day and night. Left him in agonizing pain at the thought of having you with him under the stars but couldn't.
Yourself however, would be a prize to any fine young Na'vi, but to your own self image you were at the bottom of the food chain. Your biggest insecurity being your deafness. You would never hear your mates words of love and comfort, would never hear the giggles of your own future children should Great Mother bless you with any.
You never had anyone express interest in you, although Ao'nung made sure of that, not that you knew. He always glared, growled or warned any man who looked in your direction. He made sure to linger a hand on your waist while talking, a smug look over his shoulder at the hunters who had tried to talk to you, a smirk at the Ilu keepers who tried to get to close.
When the Sullys had arrived, you had been busy helping Ronal with her duties as she was trusting you to take over while she got ready to give birth.
You didn't get to see Tsireya and Ao'nung as often as they were busy with teaching the new comers the traditions and expectations of the clan.
'(Y/N) go fetch Ao'nung, he should be down on the beach,' Ronal requested, you nodded, standing from your sitting position and heading out of the Marui, starting your trek to the beach.
You had found a few flowers on your way, taking a moment to pluck them from the ground and arranged them nicely. Maybe Ao'nung would like something to help brighten his mood.
Stopping once you reached the beach, you felt your eyes widen in disbelief as Ao'nung and his friends were surrounding Kiri, pointing at her and laughing. Kiri was clearly uncomfortable and trying to walk away, luckily Lo'ak came and started to intercept the boys, only they turned their hateful ways onto him.
You felt your fists clench up, nervously twisting the flowers. You started walking in that direction, Neteyam showing up as well from beside you, making yourself known too.
Ao'nungs ears pressed back, his body feeling hot with embarrassment that you'd caught him being rude to someone.
"Oh look, big brother to the rescue-" Ao'nung reached his hand out, silencing his friend who bowed his head obediently. "I need you to respect my sister from now on," Neteyam threatened, his eyes glaring into Ao'nung who nodded, trying to ease the anxiety in his chest as you approached too.
You tapped Kiris hand, the girl turning to you as you looked her over, as she tried to calm you down, 'I'm fine, no harm done,' she assured, you face turning into one of doubt but giving up in the end.
The three siblings went to walk away, but Lo'ak suddenly turned around and went back to Ao'nung, his smirk and quirked eyebrow making you upset a little. Why was he acting this way? Was he really this mean to them?
Ao'nung didn't know what had happened when Lo'ak punched him, one second he was standing and the next on the floor with his friends helping him up. They all jumped Lo'ak who held his ground to the best of his abilities, but soon found his brother Neteyam jumping in to help him.
You gasped, hands covering your mouth in disbelief, the flowers falling into the sand forgotten. Why were they doing this? 'Kiri, we need to stop them' you told her, but even she could only look on in a mix of horror and laughter.
Deciding that enough was enough, you inserted yourself into the fight, Ao'nungs friends quickly backing away as you pulled them off.
Neteyam hadn't seen you enter the fight, when he felt his shoulder get touched he quickly turned and went to punch the person, barely being able to stop himself before he hit you.
You had flinched inward, arms raised quickly to protect yourself, eyes shut incase of pain. "(Y/N)!" Ao'nung threw himself to you, shoving Neteyam out of the way, his hands gently grabbing yours to bring them down.
You squeaked, the cutest sound Ao'nung had ever heard, and opened your eyes to see Ao'nung checking you for injuries despite his cheek being bruised and lip busted. His eyes held fear and worry, hands moving from your arms to gently hold your face.
An adult nearby had brought his father and Toruk Makto, but he didn't care for the shouts that were happening, he could only focus on you. He brought his hands into view, 'You okay?' Ao'nung questioned, though your face contorted into worry as you held his face, feeling bad when he flinched from your thumb brushing his cheek.
He grabbed your hand and held it at his side as he turned to Neteyam, "Don't you ever touch her again!" If it hadn't been for his father pulling him away with you in tow, he would've attacked the oldest sibling.
"Maybe don't start things your girlfriend tries to finish!" Lo'ak yelled back, getting dragged away by his own father.
Upon entering the Marui, his mother hit him upside the head, "skxqwng! You brought (Y/n) into this?! I pray for the resilience to not break your bones!" Ao'nung averted his mother and fathers gaze, his head down as he couldn't even look to you either. Ashamed you had caught him at his worst moment.
"I leave (Y/n) to take care of your wounds, Great Mother help you find some sense!" Ronal hissed, Tonowari leading her out of the Marui to give you two some privacy.
You slowly walked over, placing a hand on his arm, Ao'nung letting you lead him to the mat and both of you sitting down facing eachother.
'What were you thinking?' You inquired, waiting for his reply as you began to mix a paste together. 'I wasn't thinking, but they deserved it, freaks all of them' he huffed, sucking it back in when you roughly applied the paste to his cheek.
His eyes found yours as you stared at him with hurt, 'What does that make me then? I cannot hear, I cannot speak well, they can communicate freely, I have to look for eyes and attention,'
Ao'nung felt his throat constrict, his hands clamy. You were so beautiful in his eyes, but the way he treated them made you think ill of yourself and that's not want he wanted.
You looked down, eyes glossy from unshed tears. His hand on your chin made you look at him, your lip trembling as your ears pressed back.
Ao'nung let go and signed only one word, but it made your body erupt in flames.
'Beautiful'
~.~
Since the incident with the boys on the beach, Ao'nung tried to be kind in your presence when the sullys were around but when the opportunity to trick Lo'ak revealed itself, he couldn't help it.
When he returned though and found you looking at him with those eyes again. Eyes filled with pain and now disappointment, he knew had to do the right thing.
'I'm sorry,' he apologized, finding you alone by the beach later that night. You turned from him, arms crossed. You weren't going to look at him or reply.
He fell to his knees in front of you, grasping at your hands desperately. You huffed, eyes glaring into him. Ao'nung used to pray he would never see that day you gave him that look, but after what he'd done to Lo'ak he could say he deserved it.
Hands trailing from your hands down to your elbows, he slowly let go and began to speak, "I'm sorry, I know I've been stupid and they don't deserve that, I'm not sure what I was thinking," Ao'nung kept his eyes trained on yours, watching you look exhausted.
"Why risk the danger? What if he'd gotten hurt? Or worse, you," you felt your lips pull back in a snarl, though he could only find pleasure in the fierceness of your face. His heart beat fast knowing you cared about him.
"I wish you would think with this," you placed your hand on his chest, feeling his erratic heartbeat, "not with this," you playfully pushed his forehead, a smile appearing on your lips. You couldn't stay mad at him, not when he smiled at you as softly as he did now.
He grasped your hand, bringing it back to his chest. You felt your own speed up to match his, both of you filled with deep affection for one another, not that the other knew.
You both stared at eachother for what felt like hours, yet only a few minutes had passed, just enjoying eachothers company.
When you had broken out of your daydream however, you quickly pulled your hand away and stood up, eyes darting everywhere but him as you shakily signed, "we shouldn't be doing this, I have to go,"
Ao'nung couldn't stand fast enough when you pulled away, tripping over the sand as you ran. Everything had just been perfect, what had happened?
~.~
You helped Ronal to sit, her stomach slowly getting bigger as the days went on. "Baby is good?" You wondered, a grin on your face of excitement as she nodded, her own smile gracing her features.
'Baby is strong, maybe a boy like Ao'nung,' she replied, you nodding in agreement, 'Ao'nung differently is strong,'
'Yes, he will be a great Olo'eyktan, if only he hurry and choose his Tsahìk,' she let her eyes slip to your figure out of the corner of her sight, seeing you quickly look down and away. Not out of embarrassment it seemed, but out of disappointment.
Ronal frowned, she did not like seeing you so hurt, especially by her own child, lest he be stupid enough to do it.
Ronal placed her hand on your cheek, bringing your face back up to make eye contact with her, 'why do you look so sad? What has happened?'
You tried to brush her off, 'it's nothing, I'm sure whoever he chooses will make a lovely Tsahìk,' you began to ramble, hands moving quickly, 'Ney`ite is the best diver, Alyara is known to sing beautifully, from what I've seen and been told,'
'He deserves someone who can help him feel better on rough days, someone who can actually listen and help with his problems, who loves and cherishes him as he is,'
Ronal tapped your hand, causing you to heat up in realization, you'd been rambling for too long. 'Someone, like you?' She quirked her brow, a knowing smirk on her face.
You shook your head, eyes feeling glossy with tears, 'what do I have to offer him?' You felt a hiccup erupt in your throat from trying to hold in your sobs, 'I cannot listen to his problems, I cannot comfort our children with words when crying, no one would look to me, Eywa may love me as she created me, but surely Ao'nung loves another,'
Ronal felt her eyes catch the sight of a figure standing behind you. Ao'nung could only stand frozen as he saw what you thought of yourself. He's never loved anyone like he loves you, and it's his fault for making you think otherwise.
Ronal grasped your hands firmly, shaking her head at you. Ronal reached a hand for Ao'nung who walked over, his shadow startling you as you looked upwards, his face looking hurt by your own tears.
Ronal placed your hand in his, his fingers gripping your own softly but firm, like a silent promise to never let go.
The Tsahìk bowed in exiting the Marui, leaving both of you alone.
Ao'nung knelt to face you, your cheeks hot with humiliation that he had to see you like this. You tried to look elsewhere but he placed his hand on your cheek, turning your face towards him.
He let go, feeling a moment of Deja Vu as he thought back to two nights ago by the water. When you both had been just as close in the sand.
"You are not less than anyone here," he signed, feeling his heart excelerate with emotion.
'(Y/n), I don't need to hear your voice to know your words are strong and kind, I don't need your words of comfort when your touches are enough,' he placed your hand on his chest, just as he did those nights ago. He hoped you would feel his heart that's beating full of love for you.
You could only feel a bizarre rush of emotions, anger at yourself for letting Ao'nung find out this way, fear in what is to come, yet, love from knowing he felt the same as you did.
'I'm sorry you did not see yourself as adequate when you are more than I could ever dream, the love you hold for our clan speaks words where your lips may fail,'
You felt your lips quiver, tears falling down your face as you tried to hold yourself together.
'I see you, (Y/n), and I would love for you to become my Tsahìk, my mate,'
You laughed, 'I would love to spend my life with you, I see you, Ao'nung,' you pressed your forehead to his, his own tear or two slipping from his eye as you both enjoyed this moment of peace together.
He raised both hands to your face, cupping your head as he brought your lips to his, the soft, plush feeling of your lips nearly driving him mad with desire. Your own hand finding home on his chest and shoulder as you felt weak from lack of air.
Pulling away, you made him stand up with you, his eyes showing curiosity. You smirked at him, 'Wanna go somewhere more private?' Ao'nungs silence spoke for itself as he dragged you out of the Marui, right past his parents who had a sudden look of realization.
"Oh Great Mother," Ronal sighed exasperated, "Looks like our youngest will be close in age to our grandchild," Tonowari mumbled, flinching from Ronal who began to hit him from saying such words, "skxqwng!"

masterlist : chapter one
Silence | Chapter Two:
Tumblr media
Due to being deaf for a long time, you had to find other ways to help yourself understand those around you, and one of those ways was reading people's expressions and body language fairly well.
When you had gotten back to the lab from the Sully family’s Marui with your mother you knew something had happened when they told all the kids to get out so the adults could talk.
Sitting on one of the chairs next to your mother while she continued taking notes on a new plant she was researching, You watched her facial expressions.
Her eyes weren’t lit up with that light she gets when she is studying a new plant, she didn’t have that bright smile upon her face instead it was replaced with a sadden frown with her eyebrows furrowed not in curiosity but in stress.
Taping her shoulder to get her attention. ‘Mother, will you tell me what’s wrong?’ You signed with a worried look on your face. Whatever was bugging her was obviously something big because she was always a positive woman, making sure she looked at the bright side of things.
Your mother pulls away from her notebook and you watch as her eyes close and shoulders raise and lower telling she let out a loud sigh. ‘I have something important that we need to talk about… follow me’ she signed and grabbed ahold of your hand pulling you guys into a more private room. You followed her with slow steps, afraid of what this import talk was gonna be about.
You both sit down on the couch in the room.
‘You know how I was talking with Neytiri and Jake? Earlier?’ Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion but nodded your head telling her to go on.
‘The family has to leave the clan…’ you quickly put her hands down stopping her from signing anymore and shake your head. ‘Why are they leaving? What do you mean? They can’t leave me! They are my friends!’
You fly your hands everywhere as you panic at the thought of your only friends leaving you. The only people, that are your age, on this planet that you could communicate to without having to write on a piece of paper.
Tears fall out from your eyes but you quickly wiped them away with the back of your hand. Your mother gently lifts your chin up making you look at her, you see the tears in her eyes as well.
They were also her friends, just as close to the family as you were. ‘That’s not the only thing….you have to go with them, without me’ her hands shook while signing before completely breaking down in front of you. She wasn’t just sad that her friends were leaving, she was also losing her daughter too. Your eyes widen as you take in every word.
‘What do you mean? Mom? What are you talking about?’ You asked, shaking her shoulders to make her look at you. Finally getting her to look up you see tears streaming down her face falling into her lap ‘They know what you look like (y/n). If they ever come here they will take you away just like spider and to try and get information out of you. It’s not safe here, you need to leave with them. Trust me it was hard to say yes, I don’t want my baby to leave but if it’s the only thing to keep you safe I have to’
‘I can’t leave you! I’m not going with them unless you are, mom you can’t do this please!’
She shook her head wiping the tears that continued to fall down your cheeks. ‘You guys are leaving later today’ whimpers finally erupted from your throat as you bury your face in her shoulder continuing to cry letting your sorrows leave your mouth. Your mother could only cry with you and hold you close for the last time.
Both families urgently packed their belongings away getting ready to set off on a long journey, finding a new place to call home.
The Sully family already had said goodbye to their clan and we’re waiting on you and your mother to say your last goodbyes.
‘I love you (y/n), no matter what I will always love you’ your mother signed to you, tears now streaming down her face that she didn’t bother wiping.
You cry with her, you hug your mom for the last time and pull away looking into her eyes while holding her hands.
“I love you too” you said out loud for the first time in years, hoping that it came out somewhat audible. If this was gonna be the last time you’ll get to see your mother you were gonna make sure she heard the three words with her ears and not her eyes.
Your mothers eyes widen hearing your voice for the first time since you were just a little girl.
The family behind you, eyes widened as well, never hearing your voice before, it was very soft and quiet, a little hoarse. “(Y/N) has such a pretty voice mom!” Tuk chimed with a big smile telling Neytiri who she was sitting with.
A hand lands on your shoulder telling you it’s time to go, you turn your head and crank it up seeing Lo’ak smiling. “Don’t worry Auntie I will make sure to keep (Y/N) safe and sound.” Lo’ak said to your mother giving her a hug goodbye as well.
“I know you will, thank you Lo’ak…I promise I’ll see you guys again one day” She hugged the taller boy back giving a kiss on his forehead.
“Come on Sevin, let’s get going” Lo’ak said grabbing your hand in his and leading you to his ikran. He gets on first making the tsaheylu calming the creature before grabbing you by the waist to put you in front of him.
‘Don’t drop me Lo ’ you signed to him, you feel him laugh behind you before rubbing your arm and reassurance and giving his parents a nod signaling they were all ready to go.
Quickly you turn your head looking at your mother and hold out your hand with your pointer and pinky up with your thumb out saying I love you.
The journey was long, you guys had to take breaks to give the Ikran time to rest and fuel up for the next couple hours of straight flying.
“Mom, when are we gonna be done flying…I’m tired of it” Tuk whined in her mothers arms. You and the family had decided to take one last break before setting off again in the morning.
You and Neteyam were both passed out sleeping next to each other with Lo’ak was on the other side of you playing with the grass growing from the ground while Kiri was sitting next to Jake.
Everyone was tired, it had already been two days since leaving everything they’ve known behind, but they were not about to lose hope. “I know Tuk, soon…” Neytiri whispered into her hair as she gave the little girl a kiss on the head. All she wanted was for her family to be safe, she prayed to Eywa that they would find somewhere so they no longer have to run and hide.
Lo’ak looked over at your face as you slept soundly caged between Neteyam’s protective arms, for once you didn’t have a frown on your face or tear stained cheeks, you looked peaceful.
Throughout the whole journey you had multiple breakdowns from how overwhelming the journey was for you.
The family had to calm you down from having panic attacks, it was scary waking up in unknown surroundings, no mother by your side to hug you tightly rubbing your back as a sign of saying ‘it’s okay, your safe now’
You missed your mother a lot, but you quickly learned that this was in fact the safest option for everyone and you just had to accept that this is what it’s gonna be from now on, although you loved Neytiri like a mother she could never fill in your real mothers spot.
After taking one last long flight journey you guys finally spot a village from afar, everyone’s face lights up in excitement as they fly closer and closer. The sound of horns go off announcing to everyone someone has arrived but it goes unknown to you as you were staring in awe at the ilus swimming in the water underneath you.
Once the family had found a clear and safe place to land the ikrans, they immediately get surrounded by Na’vi people, some with curious eyes never seeing a human before and others with dark glares as they saw you as unwelcomed, a demon.
Seeing all the eyes on you but having no clue what they were shouting at you was the scariest thing, but you had a pretty good idea that they weren’t nice things, the one good thing about being deaf is that all you had to do was close your eyes and it was as if no one was there, so that’s exactly what you did. You closed your eyes and hid your face in the closest person who was near you which was Neteyam and hid your face in his side hoping that all this will be over soon.
Ao’nung and Rotxo made their way through the crowd of people to see the newcomers that caused such commotion. Once they got close enough both boys stare with wide eyes as their gaze lands on a small human girl who was hiding her face in one of the newcomers' sides. They both look at each other thinking the same thing ‘is that a human?’ Before walking closer to get a better view.
“She must be their pet! They have a human as their pet haha!” Ao’nung says out loud while pointing in your direction. The sully kids immediately go alert as they hear someone talking about you. “The human is weird but look at those baby tails! How are they supposed to swim! They are so weird!-“ Rotxo’s teasing got cut off by Tsireya who had just arrived, as she swatted his pointing hand. “Do not Rotxo! Knock it off both of you!”
Tsireya scolds the boys before turning her head to the family, her eyes meeting another pair. She smiles as the boy sends a wave in her direction, her eyes continue to trail down and land on you who finally had pulled your face out from Neteyam’s side and made eye contact with her.
Her eyes widened, never seeing a human before. Yeah she’s heard the terrible stories about how bad humans were and all the destruction they have caused their planet but she didn’t believe all of them were bad. Tsireya sends you a friendly smile followed by a wave and you shyly reciprocate the gesture with your cheeks begging to heat up.
‘She’s so pretty’ both of you thought. You watch as the girl's head turns with a worried expression, following to where she was looking you see two Na’vi who seemed like the Olo’eyktan and Tsahìk step forward.
You watch as the Olo’eyktan talks with Jake, he doesn't seem angry at all, he even seems friendly, but just in case, you watch his face for any sign of anger. While watching them conversate you didn’t notice the Tsahìk circling around with a sharp glare, picking and poking at Lo’ak and Kiri until you feel a harsh pull on your hand that causes you to swing your head up to be face to face with the woman.
You could feel the hair on your neck stand up, blood running cold as you stood there paralyzed with fear not knowing what to do and what was going on. “They even have the audacity to bring a human to our village!” Ronal speaks with venom as she stares you down. If looks could kill you would already be 7 feet under.
“Leave her alone! She brings no harm!” Neytiri hisses and pulls you away from Ronal, holding you close in her protective embrace ready to strike at anyone else who tried touching you. Jake pulls you and Neytiri behind him. “I apologize for my mate! We’ve had a long trip and she’s very protective. I know seeing a human is intimidating but I promise you (Y/N) means no harm. Right (y/n)?” Jake says to Tonowari and Ronal while signing to you, horribly. You honestly had no clue what he was trying to say to you but nod your head hoping you didn’t agree to something bad.
Tonowari and Ronal share looks as if they were talking telepathically, after Ronal lets out a frustrated sigh Tonowari turns back to the family. "Toruk Makto and his family will stay with us, Treat them as our brothers and sisters. They do not know the sea so they will be like babies taking their first breath…I’m not sure how your human will do but we will do our best”
A big wave of relief washed over the family. They finally had a place to stay, a place to now call home, meaning no more long and tiring flights. You look to Lo’ak with a hopeful gleam in your eyes, praying that you didn’t read everyone’s happy faces the wrong way and get your hopes up.
‘We can stay’ he signed to you with the biggest smile on his face. Unknown to you two, the three Metkayina kids stood there in shock as they saw Lo’ak and you signing back and forth. ‘Who were these people? And how did they know sign?’

Ocean. Ocean during the night. Dark, deep, and full of stories. But at the same time so beautiful.
Like Y/N's eyes.
When Neteyam first saw Y/N's eyes, they reminded him of the ocean.
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
Y/N was sitting on the sand, her feet deep in the sand, her gaze in the depths of the ocean.
"Come on, bro! You can't be serious! Go talk to her!” Lo'ak punched Neteyam.
"You, mighty warrior, you're afraid to talk to her? I don't believe it! I have to tell Tsireya. And Kiri. And Rotxo. And.."
Neteyam rolled his eyes. "I'm going to her, okay?! Just don't tell anyone!"
"Hmm... I'm afraid everyone already knows about it. The looks you throw at that girl are too obvious."
"Shut up!" Neteyam blushed. Damn! He wasn't as inconspicuous as he thought.
Lo'ak cheerfully gave him a thumbs up. Neteyam rolled his eyes for the hundredth time and signaled his brother to go away.
He slowly walked towards the beautiful girl.
Y/N was sad. She didn't want to be, but she was slowly getting to the age where everyone had a mate. Only she didn't. No one came to her.
And she knew very well why.
'Y/N! That's not true and you know it! You'll meet the right one someday, I promise!' she remembered what Tsireya had told her years ago. And she didn't find the right one.
"My child, Eywa knows what she's doing,' Ronal once told her as Y/N was helping her. 'Don't be sad,'
'I'm not sad. But I can't help it, sometimes it happens to me,' she sighed and continued. 'Ronal, it's probably not meant to be,'
'Don't say that!' Ronal took her hand sternly and looked into her eyes. 'Do you remember what Ìzau'ite once said? That you have a beautiful life ahead of you. That one day someone will come who will love you just the way you are,'
Y/N had tears in her eyes. 'It's just an omen, Ronal. And I'm sorry to burden you with this.'
'You never bother me, Y/N. Just believe, okay? Don't be sad.'
Don't be sad. Y/N kept repeating it to herself. Don't be sad.
She flinched when someone touched her shoulder. That rarely happened, everyone knew that Y/N liked to be not disturbed on nights like this.
She turned and saw Neteyam. She smiled weakly. Ah, Neteyam. She first noticed him when he arrived with his family. She was curious about them and he immediately caught her eye. He seemed so cute to her. What shocked her was that she also caught him looking at her. She was never the center of anyone's interest. Then she smiled shyly at him and walked away.
He looked at her several times. Sometimes he even smiled. But he never came to see her, so Y/N had no reason to worry.
Until now.
"I'm sorry I scared you. I just wanted to introduce myself. I am Neteyam and you are?” she read his lips.
Why did he come to see her? Did he not know she was deaf?
"Will you tell me your name or will I have to find it out myself?"
Ah. No, he didn't know.
Y/N picked up a stick and started writing in the sand. Neteyam watched her curiously. She hasn't said a word yet. Was she shy?
MY NAME IS Y/N. NICE TO MEET YOU.
Neteyam stared at the sand. “Y/N. Nice to meet you too,"
Y/N watched him with her eyes and wrote in the sand:
DO YOU KNOW OUR FINGER TALK?
She knew that Neteyam had told Ao'nung that he didn't understand their "finger talk" underwater. But it had been a long time since he said that. He might have learned it by then.
Neteyam wrote in the sand:
A BIT. WHY?
Y/N sighed. Will she tell him? That she's deaf? To make him leave? Like everyone else?
She was silent for a while, looking at the ocean. Who knows how it sounds? What does the ocean sound like? That was her biggest question. What does the ocean sound like?
'Neteyam, it's because..' she started motioning to him when someone pushed Neteyam away. Ao'nung.
"What are you doing here?! Let her!” Ao'nung shouted.
"I didn't do anything to her, I swear! Where did you get that?!” Neteyam didn't understand.
Meanwhile, Y/N stood up and pushed Ao'nung away from Neteyam.
'Ao'nung! Leave him! He didn't do anything to me, I swear!' she motioned to him.
Ao'nung growled at Neteyam. 'Why were you with him?' he asked her.
'Because I came to see her.' Neteyam finally understood their sign language.
Y/N looked into his eyes. 'Sorry, Ao'nung is a bit protective. And Neteyam, if you didn't get it, I'm deaf,' she motioned to him and left with that.
Neteyam was looking at her pretty back for a while. Everything suddenly made sense. He felt like an idiot.
"Neteyam, if you hurt her," Ao'nung growled.
"I won't hurt her! Why would I do that?"
"Because she is deaf! It's not easy for her,” Ao'nung looked at him sternly.
"I understand, okay, Ao'nung? You don't have to be so protective. And the fact that she is deaf does not burden me. On the contrary."
"On the contrary? What?"
"I want to know her. Y/N."
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
"Hello. Sorry about yesterday," Neteyam finally found Y/N the next day.
She was just leaving Ronal.
She looked at him in surprise. 'No need to apologize. What are you doing here?'
Neteyam smiled shyly. 'I came to see you. Shall we walk?'
Y/N opened her mouth in shock. She's dreaming, right? This can't be true.
They walked along the beach and stopped at the place where they met yesterday.
Y/N looked at him. Eywa, he was so handsome. But she had to ask him: 'Why did you come to see me?'
'What do you mean? Aren't the boys going after you?'
'They don't go, Neteyam. The fact that I am deaf is a problem for them. And I'm not surprised at that.'
'Why are you throwing yourself down? Being deaf does not make you worthless. I don't see a problem with that. That's their problem. I see a beautiful girl in front of me and the fact that you are deaf makes you... uhm.. even more beautiful.'
Y/N had tears in her eyes. 'You only recently learned sign language, right? You are doing very well,' she praised him.
Neteyam smiled at her. She was beautiful. Why didn't she see that?
He really couldn't believe that no one had come up to her and asked her to be his mate yet.
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
Y/N and Neteyam started meeting each other. Y/N loved evening walks. They talked for a long time. About life. About everything. Y/N didn't even want to believe it was true. It was too beautiful. Y/N also met Neteyam's family. His family always knew how to make her laugh. They were very nice. And funny. Even Ao'nung, her good loyal friend, changed his mind about Neteyam.
She liked Neteyam. He was so nice, to everyone, to everything, that it hurt. And so was Y/N.
"They found each other. They're both too good for this world,” Tsireya rested her head against Lo'ak's.
Lo'ak looked at his brother as he walked hand in hand with Y/N. “Y/N is a good girl. Sometimes I even forget that she is deaf,"
Tsireya nodded silently.
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
'Do you know that your name means no end?' Y/N asked him out of nowhere.
Neteyam puzzled Y/N's nose. 'I don't know why my parents gave me name with this meaning, but I like it.'
'Me too.'
And then she asked him again. What interested her the most. 'How does the ocean sound?'
Neteyam looked at her. She was so interested. His heart sank as he realized that she would never find out.
'Beautiful,' he answered. 'The sound of the sea is beautiful. The sound of the waves makes the soul at peace.' The ocean reminded him of her. She gave him peace.
Y/N was a bit sad and Neteyam noticed it. 'But do you know what the most beautiful sound in the world is?' he asked her.
'I do not know,'
Neteyam knelt and wrote in the sand:
YOUR LAUGHTER.
Tears streamed down Y/N's face. Netaym stood up and wiped them away with his fingers. Y/N hugged him and Neteyam hugged her back.
She grabbed his hand and was about to motion to him something she had never said before.
But Neteyam stopped her. He kissed her fingertips and buried his fingers in her long hair. He kissed her forehead, cheeks, nose, and finally her mouth. Y/N closed her eyes and gave up on the gentle kiss. Eywa, it was so beautiful.
'Y/N, you don't have to hear the most beautiful things,' Neteyam placed her hand on his heart. 'You don't even have to see the most beautiful things, but you have to feel the most beautiful things.'

Like the Ocean
~Neteyam x Deaf Metkayina reader
~Fluff
~Proofread?-no
~Summary-You are Tonowari’s youngest daughter, you were a kind soul, always doing what’s right, and we're deaf. This never stopped you from enjoying the world, and one day a certain family came.
Note: This is my first time writing about the Metkayina! I hope everyone enjoys!
Tumblr media
Your eyes sparkled as you watched the ocean. This was always your escape no matter what, it was always so beautiful and still. You smiled as you dipped your feet in, feeling the vibrations all around you. Being deaf enhanced your life in a way. Honestly, just by the way your eyes looked at everything, you’d think it was your first time seeing it. Your family never made you feel like a burden, your older siblings, Tsireya and Aonung, stopped any bullying that would be your way. Your mother, Ronal treated you as a baby, even though you were of age.
Anyways, you wouldn’t trade your life for anything. As you continued to play around you noticed people surrounding something. You assumed it might be someone hurt, so you rushed over there. Instead, you were met with a group of forest people. Your eyes widen in amazement as you began trying to get closer. Their bodies were much different, and if they trying to live here it would take them a while to learn the way of the water, you thought. You noticed two boys and two girls, but one stood out the most. His eyes had already been placed on you causing you to smile. You waved at the boy, who seemed shocked you waved and quickly returned the wave.
Aonung took notice before sending a glare toward the boy and grabbing you and pushing you slightly behind him. You frowned a bit till you noticed your father come out. Without being able to fully see him, you weren't able to keep up with what he was saying. You saw Tsireya and went her way and signed to her, “what is going on?”
She sent you a smile, “they want to stay here,” your smile widen at the thought of new friends. You clapped, something you did often to show you were happy. Tsireya laughed a little, till your mother made her way to the group. You adored your mother, constantly wanting to be with her and learn. She hadn't noticed you in the group and began speaking, she grabbed the oldest girl’s hand showing off the extra finger that you thought was cool. You slightly tapped Tsireya, “they have extra fingers! They must be very special!” She nodded slightly bringing her attention back to the conversation. Without being able to understand your eyes began wondering and fell back to the boy. His eyes were very pretty you thought as you examined the jewels he wore on his body.
You could tell the conversation had gone well by the smile laced on your sister's face. She stepped forward a bit dragging you with her. You waved at the family, causing your mother to finally notice you, “My Son, Aonung, and daughters, Tsireya and Raya will show you where you will stay.” You read his lips before smiling, “no, not my Raya!” Your mother grabbed your forearm lightly, “she will be coming with me,” and just like that you left the group, but not without waving to the new family bye.
You sat next to your mother as she softly braided your hair, you enjoyed the sensation it gave you. You softly tapped her leg turning to face the woman, “why was I not allowed to help the new family?” Her smile faltered at the mention of the forest people, “they have sky people's blood in them! They are from the forest and soon will realize they are useless in the water!” you frowned at your mother's words, “but they can still try! I bet they will prove us all wrong mom!” you smiled brightly at the older woman. One thing she loved about you, you always found the good in everything no matter what.
Tumblr media
Neteyam's eyes could not lift from you the minute he saw you. You had these big blue eyes and even though everyone else was looking at him and his family as “demon blood” you looked more amazed. Once you noticed his stare, it didn't shy you away at all you smiled back showing off your dimples. He was going to speak with you before Aonung pulled you back. As the conversation with his fathers and the chief continued his mind kept wandering to you. Lo’ak took notice and nudged him, “we’ve literally been here for five seconds,” Neteyam rolled his eyes before looking else where.
“My Son, Aonung, and daughters, Tsireya and Raya will show you where you will stay.” His eyes followed you as you stepped out with your siblings. His smile deepened before being knocked off, “no, not my Raya,” your mother grabbed you and dragged you off, but you still sent a happy wave as you walked off, “follow me!” your sister directed him, and his family to their new home.
He didn't see you for the rest of the day. Assuming you probably had more important things than helping teach him and his siblings. But the next day as he and his siblings made their way down the beach with Tsireya, Aonoung, and Rotox your figure was already there. “I will go get Raya she can help you guys a lot with learning our ways!” Tsireya ran down the beach to get the girl's attention. You sat on the sand as you continued to feel the way it moved, you were at peace till you felt a pull. You turned your head and faced your sister.
You smiled big, “good morning!” you signed as you stood up, “will you be able to help us teach the Sullys sign language?” You clapped lightly, “I would love to!” Yesterday your mother made you stay by her side, which you had no problem with only that you wanted to see the pretty boy again.
You and your sister walked to the group who had already sat in a circle, “hello, Raya I’m Tuk!” The little girl waved at you while speaking. You waved back, “you are very pretty Raya!” this time you were unable to read her lips due to her speaking so fast, so you smiled at her before looking at your sister, “she spoke too fast, what did she say?” Tsireya sighed, “Oh, guys Raya is deaf!” The four children let out a small “o” as you simply sighed heavily, “what did she say?” you signed again. Tsireya laughed, “she said you were pretty!” you smiled before signing, “thank you!”
“She said thank you!” Tsireya translated for you. As the group continued with lessons the only person you helped was Neteyam. You and he seemed to be having a conversation without words but with eyes. He understood everything you said, taking it in like a sponge. Your smile made his heart beat fast, and his eyes to you seemed a lot like the ocean. They were not the same color but they held the exact feeling you got when you were at the beach. You two had gotten so carried away that you hadn't noticed everyone else at all. You certainly had a frown as Aonung tapped you and told you it was time to leave.
“Will you teach me tomorrow?” Neteyam questioned as you got up, “yes, I will try!” Aonung sighed heavily dragging you away from the blue boy. You had a smile the rest of the day, doing everything with a little pep in your step. As nighttime rolled around you and your sister often stayed up late, talking. “Do you like anyone?” she questioned you. You were always a happy person, but you had a different energy today. You nodded while clapping, “I do!” your heart swelled thinking of the blue boy. Tsireya let out a small squeal, “who is it?” she pressed you. You smiled so hard it felt like your cheeks were to fall off, “Neteyam!” you smiled as you signed causing the girl to go into a giggling frenzy, “I knew it!” you stopped smiling and looked at the girl, “was I that obvious?” she nodded, “do you think he knows?” she shook her head, “men are stupid, there is no way he knows,” you took her words in before heading to sleep.
Neteyam stayed up all night trying to practice his sign language. He yawned as he walked close to the spot you were at. He began walking closer till you noticed him, already smiling at him you ushered for him to come closer. Neteyam sat before facing you, “you pretty,” he looked so proud of himself that you didn't have the heart to say he did it wrong. “Thank you!” you said as he smiled. You noticed him yawn before looking at him, “did you stay up practicing?” you at first didn't know if he understood, but the boy quickly nodded. You felt so loved you clapped, “that was so sweet!” you laid back signaling for him to do the same, “you pretty!” you signed to the boy. But he was already fast asleep. You smiled before kissing his forehead and going into the boy's embrace.

Sorry if the ends seem rushed! I have school in the morning and have no time to fix it up today! But hope you all enjoyed it!

it was a beautiful day in awa’atlu. the bright rays of sunlight radiated across the thousands of islands that inhabited many other reef clans. the heat of the sun also brought a sense of warmth and humidity in the air.
warm grains of sand sat in between your toes as you squatted down to inspect your newest find. your 9 year old sister, aolani, was just a few feet ahead of you, looking at her own findings.
beachcombing. it was something you and aolani did often. you walked down the mostly vacant part of the beach early in the morning or afternoons to see what washed up on the shore. you liked to take these items and work them into your clothes, jewelry, or even in your hair.
your finger picked up the item as you brought it closer to your face. you gently brushed off the coarse grains of sand to get a better look. it was a small scallop seashell in a pretty shade of pink. it was the first time you ever found one of these before.
as your gaze was on the shell, a loud blare of a horn from the other side of the beach caused you to jump in surprise and drop the shell.
you looked up, putting your attention on aolani. she was already one step ahead as she quickly placed her small treasures into the pouch tied to her loincloth.
"let's go see! come on!" the 9 year old exclaimed as she ran past you.
"aolani- wait!" you yelled out. you looked down at the sand where you no longer saw the shell. you groaned before getting up to chase after your sister.
aolani's small feet dug into the golden sand as she ran to the main part of the village. when you finally made it back, you could vaguely see a few non-aquatic creatures resting near the shoreline.
you didn't have time to dwell on it though, as your eyes then landed on aolani who was now slithering her way through the growing crowd. once again, you groaned, following after her. after excusing your way through the crowd of confused people, you finally reached aolani, who was standing in front of everyone.
"don't run away from me like that aolani." you said as you grabbed her arm and pulled her closer to you. it seems that your scolding fell on deaf ears as the young girl was clearly more fascinated by what was in front of her.
you finally took your eyes off of her and turned your attention to the new arrivals. a family of 6. it was obvious that they were from the forest due to their darker blue skin and stripes, bright amber eyes, and mountain banshees that accompanied them.
"it's too small. how are they supposed to swim?" you heard as laughter followed. you rolled your eyes when you realized the joke came from rotxo, the best friend of your annoying cousin, aonung. you weren't close enough to verbally scold the two of them.
as if the great mother was reading your mind, your other cousin, tsireya stepped in and berated them quickly before turning her attention to the newcomers.
only a few seconds passed before tonowari, the olo'eyktan of the metkayina arrived on his tsurak along with two other hunters behind him.
you and aolani watched as the leader made his way onto the beach and over to the family. it was then revealed that the father of the family was jake sully, a great war leader from the omatikaya clan and the most recent toruk makto. all na'vi knew the story of how he fought back against the sky people.
"we seek uturu." jake sully spoke when tonowari asked why he traveled all the way to the reef.
the rest of the conversation felt rather awkward to watch. you even found yourself frowning when ronal, the tsahìk embarrassed two of the teens for not being of true na'vi blood. the boy, who looked around your age looked especially ashamed.
nonetheless, after the exchange, the forest family was granted uturu and allowed to stay in the reef with your people.
the crowd began to disperse and go on about their days as did you.
"okay first, never run away like that again, something bad could have been happening." you said to aolani as the two of you started walking to your family's marui.
"sorry y/n. what do you think about jakesully and his family staying here? i think it is exciting!" aolani exclaimed with a smile on her face.
you shrugged, "i'm glad we can provide them sanctuary, i just hope they are nice people."
"they seem nice." aolani simply replied.

the rest of the day went by like normal. you didn't see much of the sully family, figuring that they were just settling into their new home.
every other day, in the evening, your dad took you fishing. you spent a few hours casting the net in the water, catching as many fish as you could. you couldn't help but notice that something seemed to be bothering your dad, but you decided not to say anything.
when eclipse began, the two of you decided to call it a day. you brought in all the fish you caught before heading back to your marui.
"how was fishing?" your mother asked when the two of you arrived home. she was seated with her legs crossed. she was doing aolani's hair while the 9 year old sat in front of her in the same position.
"fine." your father answered. his answer was rushed and sounded harsh. a confused expression flashed across your face as you and your mother shared a look. you suddenly wondered if you had done something wrong.
"aweng, yawne. is something wrong?" your mother asked, looking at her mate curiously.
you watched as your father let out a breath before answering, "i just don't understand why tonowari was thinking letting that family stay with us."
"do not question the olo'eyktan and tsahìk's decision." your mother shot him a glare.
"he is my brother. i can question him if i please." your father, aweng scoffed.
"i'm sure dinner has already begun. let us get some food in you before you become even more grumpy." your mother voiced. the 4 of you then left and went to the common area where dinner was usually held. after getting your food you looked at aolani.
"i'm going to sit with tsireya. aolani do you want to come?" you asked. your sister shook her head, saying she wanted to stay with your mother for now. you nodded before making your way to where you usually sat with your cousin.
“y/n!” a voice suddenly called out.
you stopped walking and turned your head to see aonung walking towards you.
"would you mind doing something for me?" he asked as he walked up to you. you squint your eyes at him. knowing him, it was most likely a chore that he didn't feel like doing.
"what is it?" you asked.
"can you help us with the sully's tomorrow?" he asked. you rolled your eyes. of course.
"no."
"why not?"
"because you're only asking me so i can do your work while you do little to nothing." you answered.
"please y/n." aonung begged.
"no." you refused once again before turning around and walking over to tsireya. when you reached her, you noticed a few new faces sitting beside her. it was when you got closer that you realized it was the trio of sully teens.
"y/n!" tsireya smiled once she noticed you walking over.
you sat down beside her, "hey."
"this is my cousin y/n." your cousin, introduced you to the trio, "y/n, this is neteyam, kiri, and lo'ak sully."
you smiled politely and waved to them to which they returned the gesture. you then began eating your dinner.
"i saw you talking to my brother, what did he want?" tsireya asked.
you swallowed your food before speaking, "he asked me to help you guys tomorrow."
"oh you should come! it could be fun." tsireya smiled. you shook your head at her, "he only asked me so i can be there to do his job for him."
"that is true. but now i'm inviting you. and i will make sure he does his part."
"don't worry, we won't be total skxawngs." lo'ak jokes. you looked at him before letting out a small laugh, "okay fine i'll come."
