Time Trap is a pretty fantastic novel, but I think I fundamentally disagree with the untwist that the Toa Metru were always meant to be Toa. Their story is much more compelling if they’re rag-tag underdogs who got the job by accident and still banded together and saved the day anyway, you know?

The concept of which Toa are chosen being fucked with by Makuta, only for him to lose because he was always going to underestimate the heroes no matter who they were... that’s just a better narrative imo than “joke’s on you the twist we dropped on you two books ago was never real”

Alright, so this is where my revisiting Bionicle gets interesting.

From here on, all I have to go on are plot points and details I’ve scrounged together from wiki skimming and the Bionicle Encyclopedia I had as a child. I know roughly the major plot points from here (Makuta in the robot, Matoro’s sacrifice, the whole Big Plan coming together so Makuta possesses the GSR) but I’ve never actually read it myself.

Very excited to finally binge the rest of the story firsthand and see it all come together

I’m really enjoying the first chunk of Metru Nui, and I think it boils down to this: it felt like the Toa Mata/Nuva were a team that struggled at first, then came together… but then kept arbitrarily splitting apart again because The Story Needs Conflict. None of their divisions in 2002 and 2003 really feel organic or authentic? They just keep relearning the same lesson and it’s silly.

The Toa Metru on the other hand, just feel like a much more natural clash of personalities. It feels much less artificially imposed, they’re just a bunch of random people who cannot get along at all and are working together through gritted teeth the whole way.
