They sat now dwarfed by the shadows of the circular chamber around them, hunched over a desk that ran the circumference of the room. A lit candle to their right, they held a thin, silver blade over the flame, before sliding the tool beneath the wax of a Court seal, whittling with a sure and consistent force. Kiru cared less for perfection in this moment, the seal was marked with the sigil of House Dzarkayn, a sigil the child-herald had long ago crafted a molded copy of, which sat in their small collection of tools they most certainly were not allowed to have.

Among its congregation, a man watched from a shadowed tunnel, half-hidden behind the face of a false sewer grate, eyes level with the frozen cobble of the city beyond. Early morning sun and lamplight filtered past the grate’s design, a viper sigil, the man’s House sigil, highlighting a strange pattern against his features—narrow and elegant, classically Vsyhnian, marred only by a long and thin scar that stretched along his freckled cheek—and the notebook he held, wherein he scratched furious, coded notes.

In the darkness, Aras spotted the faintest reflection amid the short tree-line of the estate’s gardens, and just the barest of shadowed outlines. He looked behind himself just once more, ensuring no one at last minute could spot him leaving, and as a distant bell tolled the hour, he jumped from the balcony.  The fall stretched for the longest of moments, bound hair fluttering somewhat, heavy cloak lifting along his shoulders and revealing the hilt of a hidden quarterstaff. He rolled in the snowed grass, and made no sound doing so, before disappearing into the hedges, hood drawn and breath stark against the night.

“I don’t want to go home,” Buck said softly, looking up into the sky. 

“Maddie is there,” Eddie replied gently. “You should talk to her.”

Buck shrugged at first, but it turned into a nod in the end, and Eddie was glad that Buck wasn’t blaming his sister for what he had learned last night. She did love him; she was the best big sibling Eddie could imagine anyone having, and Buck cared deeply about her too. 

“When she leaves, I’ll have nobody left who loves me.” 

“That’s not true,” Eddie found himself replying without even thinking about it. 

His breath caught in his throat, because, even though it should be a self-evident thing to say to his best friend, he felt like there was… something more to it. Something a little deeper, a little scarier and more exciting at the same time. And when Buck turned to look at him, his blue eyes wide and the tiniest hint of a smile at one corner of his mouth, something fluttered inside of Eddie’s chest with that strange mixture of fright and delight. 

And then Buck reached out and intertwined their fingers, not in a firm, brief grasp but… gently, almost hesitantly, and it sent that fluttering, tingling feeling all over Eddie’s arms and down his back. 

Eddie had no idea what to do with that, but he never wanted it to stop.

It was Buck who broke the contact eventually, letting out a sigh as he sat back up. “I should go. It’s dinner time soon, and I probably shouldn’t leave Maddie to help mother all by herself.”

Eddie nodded slowly, something thick obstructing his throat before he cleared it and masked it with a pretend yawn as he stretched and got up. 

When Buck got to his feet, they stood close and Buck regarded Eddie for a moment, still that hint of a smile on his lips. And Eddie wondered… Wondered what it was like what older children, young adults felt, how they decided whom they wanted to kiss, and—

“They look really great,” Buck tore him from his thoughts, lifting the fang between his fingers and holding it closer to Eddie’s own identical one. 

“Yeah,” Eddie replied, lost for any further words. 

“Two halves of a whole,” Buck said softly. “When people see us they’ll know we belong— that we’re best friends.”

Eddie was sure Buck had wanted to say that they belonged together, and he was right. 

“We’ll always be, Buck. No matter what happens.” It sounded and felt like an oath, like there was more weight to it now than there had ever been, and Eddie could see in the way Buck’s eyes shone that he felt the same.
