Basilica San Juan de Dios, a church in Granada, Spain. Built between 1737-1759 AD, this spectacular basilica unveils a blinding display of opulent baroque decor. Barely an inch of its interior lacks embellishment, most of it in gleaming gold and silver.

Panoramic view of its interior.
In 1686, Captain Juan de las Nieves Andrade built a hermitage of mud and straw in honor of San Juan de Dios, to whom he was devoted.
In 1709 the miracle of the restoration of the tablet took place. A humble lady found the tablet on the shores of Lake Maracaibo and placed it as the lid of a jar, then she heard a knock and some lights coming from her house and when she entered she found on the tablet the resplendent image of the Virgin and Child next to St. Anthony and St. Andrew. The image on the tablet became an object of pilgrimage for the devotees, and the tablet was transferred to the hermitage of San Juan de Dios, (now the Basilica).....
Around November 18 of each year, the basilica is the center of the Chinita Fair, an important socio-cultural event in the region, during which in addition to religious activities such as the procession and the descent of the virgin, events such as the bagpiper sunrise in front of the basilica, bullfights in the bullring of the monumental of Maracaibo, the lighting of the Christmas lights on Bella Vista and La Limpia avenues, the game of the Águilas del Zulia at the Luis Aparicio stadium, the Orchid Festival for Super Sábado Sensacional

El Escorial, or the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spanish: Monasterio y Sitio de El Escorial en Madrid), or Monasterio del Escorial (Spanish pronunciation: [el eskoˈɾjal]), is a historical residence of the King of Spain located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 2.06 km (1.28 mi) up the valley (4.1 km [2.5 mi] road distance) from the town of El Escorial and about 45 kilometres (28 miles) northwest of the Spanish capital Madrid. Built between 1563 and 1584 by order of King Philip II (who reigned 1556–1598), El Escorial is the largest Renaissance building in the world. It is one of the Spanish royal sites and functions as a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school, and hospital.
El Escorial consists of two architectural complexes of great historical and cultural significance: the royal monastery itself and La Granjilla de La Fresneda, a royal hunting lodge and monastic retreat about 5 kilometres away. These sites have a dual nature: during the 16th and 17th centuries, they were places in which the power of the Spanish monarchy and the ecclesiastical predominance of the Roman Catholic religion in Spain found a common architectural manifestation. El Escorial was both a Spanish royal palace and a monastery, although Philip II is the only monarch who ever lived in the main building. Established with a community of Hieronymite monks, it has become a monastery of the Order of Saint Augustine. It was also a boarding school: the Real Colegio de Alfonso XII.
Philip II engaged the Spanish architect Juan Bautista de Toledo to be his collaborator in the building of the complex at El Escorial. Toledo had spent the greater part of his career in Rome, where he had worked on St. Peter's Basilica, and in Naples serving the king's viceroy, whose recommendation brought him to the king's attention. Philip appointed him architect-royal in 1559, and together they designed El Escorial as a monument to Spain's role as a center of the Christian world.
On 2 November 1984, UNESCO declared The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo of El Escorial a World Heritage Site. It is a popular tourist attraction, often visited by day-trippers from Madrid – more than 500,000 visitors come to El Escorial every year.

Guadalajara
After a week in CDMX, I flew to Mexico’s second city, Guadalajara. It was my first visit so setting an intention was simpler: see the sights and get to know the city. This turned out to be pretty easy since there is not a whole lot to see or do there.
On my first day I headed to the historic center which consists of four plazas surrounded by government buildings, churches and shopping arcades. The plazas were all very pleasant and well-designed. The buildings were attractive if a bit monotonous (they love Tuscan arches there). The two standouts are the beautiful Cathedral and elegant Teatro Degollado. Also notable are the Jose Clemente Orozco ceiling murals in several buildings around the city. I walked west from the center to see more churches and parks as well as the University’s art museum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following day I visited the nearby town of Zapopan, famed for its basilica (and the devotion of its congregation to Nuestra Senora de Zapopan, a little doll that sits above the altar). In front of the church is a lovely pedestrian walkway with some impressive public art. I also stopped at the local art museum which was refreshingly contemporary. In the afternoon I walked around Santa Tere, a traditional neighborhood that feels very authentically Mexican.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Saturday I walked down Chapultepec, a hip area known for its restaurants, bars and clubs. It was still early however so there was not much to see. I then walked around Americana, an upscale neighborhood with some gorgeous homes, nice restaurants and hipster bars and cafes. (It reminded me of New Orleans’ Garden District.)
On Sunday I returned to the historic center, which was bustling with visitors and street performers. It was great to see all that wonderful public space so full of life. This time I walked east through the long pedestrian area of Plaza Tapatia to the stately Instituto Cultural de Cabanas. It’s a former orphanage that’s now a museum, focusing mainly on modern art. The central chapel has 57 Orozco murals, which are stunning. The numerous interior courtyards are full of whimsical sculptures, and the works in the gallery were imposing and impressive. I especially loved the temporary exhibition on the Portuguese futurist artist, Almada Negreiros. I also visited the unbelievable Mercado San Juan de Dios, a squat brutalist concrete building that houses a marketplace of nearly 30,000 vendors. You can find just about anything you could want in there (if you can actually find it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On my last day I headed out to Tlaquepaque, a nearby town that is supposedly an artist community. It’s well-preserved and full of beautiful old homes many of which now sell souvenirs, art and furniture. It’s like a Mexican Carmel or Sausalito. Still a nice place to wander around for a couple hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this sounds like not much activity over a five day period, it’s because it is not. Guadalajara is lovely and has some definite highlights but three days is plenty of time there. (One popular excursion which I did not make is to visit agave farms and tequila distilleries outside of the city.) I spent a fair amount of time reading and watching Netflix, but I was OK with that. I knew I wasn’t missing anything, and it felt good to have downtime after being a busy tourist. Guadalajara also has a lot of great food as well as a strong hipster culture with all the craft beers and artisanal coffees that accompany it. Some of the local specialties, carne en su jugo (like a meat stew) and torta ahogada (fried pork on a French roll drenched in spicy sauce), did not disappoint. But I would not recommend the tejuino, a nauseatingly sweet corn drink (yes, corn).
The one last thing I will say about Guadalajara concerns the boys. I had heard that it’s a very gay city and that the guys are hotter than in CDMX. I do not know where it got that reputation. It’s a pretty conservative place with deeply ingrained Catholic guilt and ideas about machismo. Their online profiles are woefully lacking-- bad pics (or no pics), weak descriptions, even things like height left blank. They emphasize “discreto”, “varonil” (masculine) and “bi”. Most guys I talked to just wanted to see my photos. Several said they wanted to meet and then found excuses not to. And the few I did meet were not very skilled. They didn’t really participate; rather they just let sex happen to them, as if to maintain some plausible deniability.
All told, Guadalajara has some beautiful buildings, plazas, parks and art as well as some delicious food. But I don’t recommend the boys. And don’t stay too long unless you packed some good books or you’ve got some new Netflix shows to binge.

My favorite site to visit so far was the Basilica of San Juan de Dios. I thought this structure was absolutely beautiful in its architecture. I can say with complete honesty that on the inside it is the most beautiful structure I have ever seen. This temple is one of the most important Baroque temples in Spain. This Basilica contains a nave with side chapels, a main chapel, and a choir. The high dome is particularly beautiful. One fun fact about this church is that it contains a solid silver urn that contains the relics of Saint John of God, the church's founder. The mass performed in this church was also wonderfully different from that of the typical Roman Catholic church in America. It was much shorter than masses in America and focused less on singing and more on prayer and text. There is so much history behind Catholicism in Spain, and this Basilica presented a perfect opportunity to develop an interest and learn about it.

Albaicin on a rainy evening. Such a beautiful romantic neighborhood. I could wander around exploring there forever.

Looking down at the River Darro. It goes underground near this spot and doesn't reappear until the other side of downtown. Pity. The hill with the palace of Alhambra and the other monuments up there is on the right.

Outside the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel) of Granada
Tumblr media
Inside Royal Chapel - Religion is so obviously important to Spanish history. The inside of churches are elaborately decorated, and the best artists were hired to create religious works for the monarchs and nobles.
Tumblr media
Granada Cathedral - large and beautiful. There's an El Greco in there, but not a particularly impressive one.
Tumblr media
Granada Cathedral
Tumblr media
Granada Cathedral of the Incarnation, or the Catedral de Granada, Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada is the seat of the Archdiocese of Granada. Like many other cathedrals in Andalusia, it was built on top of the city's main mosque after the reconquest of Granada. It's beautiful, yes, but so much beauty was destroyed needlessly, to make some religious point.
