We'd like to take a moment to wish our beloved librarian a Happy Birthday... Happy Birthday Ms. Nella Larsen! We celebrate you and your contributions to #BlackLibrarianship. -#scribesandvibes • #therebirthofcool • #NellaLarsen • #blacklibrarian | #HappyBirthday ・・・ #vibewise: Encouraged by Ernestine Rose; Nella Larsen broke color barriers when she became the first black woman to graduate from NYPL Library School. As a library volunteer she helped launch the first exhibit of Negro Art by utilizing the Seward Park Branch Library as a gallery space. As a librarian she helped launch Poetry Readings, Lectures, and Book Discussions held at the Harlem Branch of the New York Public Library; which attracted emerging poets, including Langston Hughes. Nella Larsen's admiration for Negro Art, Literary Works, and Culture led her to publish two novels; QUICKSAND and PASSING. Her literary works put her in the midst of a new literary movement which became known as the #HarlemRenaissance. However; we salute her unsung service to the Public Library System and her efforts with Ernestine Rose and Regina Anderson to create an exciting literary environment at the library. Those efforts plus funding from the Carnegie Foundation became the cornerstones in which the Harlem Renaissance was built. -#theblerdandthebeautiful • #standingontheshouldersofgiants https://www.instagram.com/p/CcSz8zIrOkv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#blacklibrarianship / #theblerdandthebeautiful #Repost @nypl ・・・ #AugustaBraxtonBaker was the first African American #librarian in an administrative position at #NYPL and a champion of diversity in children’s books. Baker began her career at The #NewYorkPublicLibrary’s #135thStreetBranch (now NYPL's #CounteeCullenbranch) in 1937 as a children's librarian. There, Baker led the effort to collect children's literature that positively portrayed people of color. In 1953, Baker was appointed Assistant Coordinator for Children’s Services, making her the first African American librarian in an administrative position at The New York Public Library. For 125 years, NYPL librarians have fought and served to make their profession, our institution, and our city better. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re taking a look back at women librarians who changed NYPL—and librarianship—forever. #blacklibrarianship / #BCALA #Repost @iamthelibrarydragon ・・・ On this day, #EJJosey was born. He was an African-American activist and #librarian. He was a lifelong member of various organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (@naacp) serving as President of the Albany, New York Branch from 1982–86, and the American Library Association (@americanlibraryassociation) for 48 years. He took major strides to create changes for members and librarians, for everyone, to fully understand the importance of #libraries. Dr. #RenateLChancellor [ig: @renatechance] authored E. J. Josey: Transformational Leader of the Modern Library Profession with an in-depth look at his life, which she was so kind enough to sign for me (additional thanks to @scribesandvibes and @bc_ala for the book). As we go about our day with various kinds of emotions, I want to let everyone know that today, for me, is another reason to be mindful and hopeful. -Marilu, #aspiringlibrarian • #iamthelibrarydragon ・・・ #vibewise: #BLACKLIBRARIANSMATTER. -#scribesandvibes • #theblerdandthebeautiful https://www.instagram.com/p/CKSGxdDhGeH/?igshid=1j060c8muihp0
