(C ) debating
activity: debating
date: 28th April 2020
organization: Raszyńska debate club

During all of quarantine, from the very first week, we have had debating online on zoom every week. We do exercises, debates, games and we even watched a movie (”The Great Debater”) together. Unfortunately, most tournaments are cancelled, but luckily debate meetings stll happen every week. I am very happy about this, becasue it maesk this quarantine life feel a little more “normal”, as most things are still happening. And with the possibilities zoom and the internet gives us, the difference isn’t even that big, except at home there is free coffee.

(C ) Debating
activity: Polish Schools Debating Championships
date: 28th February - 1st March 2020
organization: Fundacja Polska Debatuje
-
This weekend was the Polish Schools Debating Championships. The most important debating event of the year, that we have been preparing so heavily for. There were so many emotions during this tournament, but I’ll tr to sum it up.
We didn’t win, we got stopped at the semi finals. The cause are many things combined: many new people on the team, out first tournaments as a team, the general level of the tournament was better than last year, personally I was also very stressed and couldn’t think clearly. This was very difficult to deal with, especially because of the expectations I had. There was also a veyr stressful situation, where in the first round we were put against the other team from Raszyńska, which meant one of us would lose a point for sure. I wanted to win, but I also rooted for the others. Finally, we won that round. However, overall I believe we did a great job, especialy considering that 75% of the team started debating this year and we still got to the semi finals.
(I forced them to wear pink ties)

(C ) - Debating Białystok Wigilijny
activity: debating
date: 21 December 2019
organization: Klub Debat Białystok

This weekend we went for a debating competition in Białystok. It was a one-day tournament, so we took a train on Saturday morning and came back in the evening. It was so much fun to debate with Mary again. She came to Poland for Christmas and we thought it would be fun to go to a tournament together. I really miss debating with her. It made me think about PSDC again and I got all excited about this year. I am going to PSDC with Arek and Janek from pre-IB. They also debated in Białystok.

Debating - Wrocław Novice
activity: debating
date: 30 November - 1st December 2019
organization: Klub Debat Wrocław
-
This weekend I went to Wrocław to judge a debating Novice tournament. I was the only person from Raszyńska to go. One of my friends is studying in Wrocław, so I stayed at her house. The tournament itself was very intense. There were a lot of judges, so not everyone could ‘break’ to the outrounds. Unfortunately, I did not.
However, I am very glad that the debating community is growing back in Wrocław because for a long time it was silent due to the extreme popularity of Oxford debates in Wrocław. Luckily, bp debates are coming back in Wrocław again, so I’ll be able to visit Mei more often. I also visited parts of Wrocław, which was a lot of fun, especially the Christmas market. Wrocław is a beautiful city and if they had a good university I might want to study here.

(C ) - Debating - SD Warsaw
activity: debating
date: 22-24 November 2019
organization: Liceum Zamojski
-
This weekend was the first debating tournament of this year. It lasted from Friday (workshops) to Sunday. The tournament consisted of 4 rounds on Saturday and the semi-finals and final on Sunday. As this was a high school tournament and the first of this year, Ania and I were the only team from Raszyńska. We debated about several motions and finally had 1 point too little to ‘break’ to the semi-finals.
It was really fun to debate with someone new (as I never debated with Ania on a tournament before) and I was glad that I could teach her a lot. I think however that this also taught me a lot about myself and my debating. All in all, it was a positive experience.

(C ) Debate club
activity: judging
date: 1st October 2019
organization: debate club Raszyńska
-
Today was the third debate club of this year, and my first time judging a debate in Raszyńska. Radek threw me on deepwater and told me to judge the debate alone. Well, not alone, I had one student from pre-IB with me. Everything went fine, I also gave feedback, which the student really appreciated, so that was fulfilling. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of time, but we managed.
There was another moment which was really fulfilling and that was when someone from pre-IB came up to me to talk. They said they didn’t feel that they were really making any progress and just not sure if this is for them because they weren’t good at public speaking. I thanked them a lot for coming to me and told them not to worry about not making progress just yet as this was the third meeting and that the progress was there, just not yet fully visible. I really hope they stay, as I believe that people who debate well don’t debate well because of talent, but the motivation to practice, practice and practice more. Because that’s what debating is about. For some people, the progress is going to be longer, for some shorter, but that’s okay.

(C ) Debate Club
activity: debating
date: 17th September 2019
organization: debate club Raszyńska
Today was our first debate club. It was a lot of fun to see so many people interested in our debate club and come take a look at what we do. I didn’t debate today because I remember how ashamed I was last year when I saw how good Zosia and Mary were. I was really glad that they also came to me to talk later and ask questions and just see that they were genuinely interested. They gave me a lot of power to continue debating and I am officially ready for this year of debating!

Polska Liga Debat - Warszawa
activity: debating
date: 24-26 May 2019
organization: Klub Debat UW
This weekend I was at a tournament in Warsaw. It was the last tournament from the PLD (Polska Liga Debat) series, that are in each city. They will end with MPDP (Mistrzostwa Polskich Debat Parlamentarnych) in the summer. I was debating with Radek, our coach at Raszyńska. It was fun and I feel that I learned a lot. We ‘broke’ to the semifinals from the third place (having the third most points out of eight teams). We then passed on to the final. Unfortunately, we did not win the final (judge’s fault ;)), but finalist is good enough for me and I feel that I definitely had some practice before WSDC this summer.
These were the motions from this tournament:
Przykładem "woke ads" może być kampania Nike "Dream crazy" z Colinem Kaepernickiem lub "The best men can be" Gillette

Cracow Open
activity: judging
date: 13-14 April 2019
organization: Klub Debat Parlamentarnych UJ
Spontaneous tournaments are the best, ain’t I right? After winning any tournament, especially PSDC, there is a time of cooling down and thinking ‘what now?’. Obviously, we have a lot to do and we are far far away from being as good as other our age in different countries, but still everyone kind of needed a break. That is why I didn’t have any tournament planned for the next few months. But Monday after PSDC, we have debate club as usual (just talking about what happened, feedback, etc) and Radek joked about me coming to Cracow Open as a judge (the team registration was long closed). And me being me, I went through with it. I wrote to the organizers, they accepted me, my friend Sara, who studies law in Cracow agreed to have me over at her house and I bought train tickets.
It ended up being a lot of fun, both with Sara and the tournament. It was my first break as a judge, making me the youngest person in Poland to break at an international tournament. I was a part of the semi-final panel, with Radek and a Dutch judge (which was actually funny, as she was half-Dutch, half-Polish, just like me).
In conclusion, I’m really happy that I went, even if I had to stand the whole train ride from Cracow to Warsaw (there were no sitting places anymore).

Polish Schools Debating Championships
activity: debating
date: 30-31 March 2019
organization: Polska Debatuje
I literally don’t even know where to start. Polish Schools Debating Championships finally came. THE event that we were looking forward to since September. Funnily enough, it was also my 10th tournament.
This is one of the experiences I will always remember. We won all the rounds on Saturday, breaking to the semi-finals from the first place. I went to the venue where they announced it Saturday evening and I can not even start to describe the emotions. Generally, Saturday we were stressed, but after NSDC we were prepared to handle the stress. But when they announced how many points we had and that we were breaking to the semi-finals I could not take it. I literally ran around the room and screamed my lungs out. And those were only the semi-finals.
Before I tell you about Sunday, we need to back up a little. The week before PSDC was awful. We almost decided not to go. We were really considering calling it all of. We did not feel prepared and two members of our team had a personal issue. Generally, all was bad, and one day instead of preparing like we planned, we had an almost two-hour talk with Radek, our coach about what we will do he handled it really well and eventually led us to our own conclusion that we should go. But we never really believed we would win, maybe break to semi-finals. Not more.
I slept like two hours that night. After the announcement of the breaks, I went to celebrate (obviously). Then I went home and it was like midnight and I continued our preparation for the final (Marysia and Zosia would prepare semi-final). The thing was I didn’t really believe we would be in the final, so it felt like work for nothing. But I still did it and then I went to sleep. Sunday was my dad’s birthday, so I woke up earlier and celebrated with my family. Then I went to Warsaw for the tournament. The semi-finals went really smoothly. It turned out we were quite much better than the other team. The hardest was to continue the fight until the end, even if we were obviously winning. We broke to finals and THAT was when the stress began.
We got a side and had another half-hour to prepare. I ate almost nothing for lunch, we just prepared for the motion with Radek. I don’t remember the final. I was really happy that we decided for me to go first because even though I was technically second (after the first speaker from prop side), I didn’t have enough time to get stressed. I did my speech, walked off stage, and that was it. I really don’t remember the rest of the debate.
It was super close, the judges talked for a long time and there was a split (2:3), but finally, we won. In Saturday I was happy, it was nothing compared to Sunday. All the emotions, all of it, since I started preparing in September suddenly flowed in and a mess of screaming, group hug, tears and people screaming “don’t cry, we still have to take a picture”. Mary also became the best speaker of the tournament, getting us all the trophies we could get.
Now let’s just hope we all get picked t go to Sri Lanka in the summer to World Schools Debating Championships.

Rotterdam Erasmus Open
activity: judging
date: 23-25 March 2019
organization: Erasmus Debating Society
Let me just get a few things straight at the start. My second tournament abroad. First one without school, but with friends. Totally spontaneous, planned a week beforehand. My first EVER judging experience. Now, to explain shortly, anyone can register as a judge, but they will be a trainee (t), meaning they can participate in the discussion but have no real vote. On the first round, I was assigned in a judging panel with someone from the CA team (one of the main judges) and one of the better debaters worldwide. It was because they didn’t know me and wanted to test me to see if they trust me. Of course, it makes sense, but it was really stressful for me, as I had never judged before. Luckily, she was very happy with me and gave me some productive feedback. After two more rounds, thanks to positive feedback from others, I got promoted to wing, meaning I was an actual part of the panel and could vote in the decisions. Unfortunately, I did not break (go to outrounds - rounds after the elimination - semi-final and final) to judge there, but the CA team told me it was close.
Also, I had a lot of fun travelling to Holland with my debating friends from UW and I feel it was really helpful for my debating skills to see the debate from a different perspective. I also went to visit my grandma in Holland, which was nice, as I had not seen her for quite a while.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos, but it’s the moment that counts, right?

Nordic Schools Debating Championships
activity: debating
date: 21-24 February 2019
organization: Nordic Schools Debating Championships
Nordic Schools Debating Championships passed so quickly. The tournament was a lot of fun, but also stress and tears. Yes, also a lot of tears. It was an incredible experience to be able to debate with students our age from outside of Poland for the first time. We saw how they handle debates, their struggles and their ways of doing things. Especially the Romanians are really really good (the final was Romania-Romania, Romania won ;)). For me personally, it was also nice to talk to Dutch trainers and ask them about the Dutch national team.
Furthermore, I went with the most amazing people. My team, the girls from the other team and our coach were the best people I could have imagined to go with. I feel that I really bonded with my team, spending almost all my time with them and managing the stress between debates. We struggled with an argument, whilst having an hour to prepare for the debate, but got over it and eventually won. I feel this really brought us closer together.
Kopenhagen is an amazing city and I even looked up options to study there when I came back.
All in all, I had a lot of fun at NSDC and it gave me a lot of motivation to prepare for future tournaments, including PSDC (polish schools debating championships).

"Will you debate with me?” - Valentines tournament
activity: debating tournament
date: 16th February 2019
organization: Klub Debat UAM (Poznań)
This weekend, yet another tournament, this time in Poznań. As my only valentine this year is debating, the same as for many other people, we decided to at least come together and do what we love most, but this time in English. Though it was a tournament open to everyone, not just high schoolers, we managed to do pretty well. I was debating with Nina and we ended up with 4 points and shared the 21st place in the speaker tab (out of 40 speakers). I am really glad to have gone to this tournament. Thanks to the incredible feedback that I got from the judges, I really feel that I could develop my debating skills in particular areas. It also was just a nice weekend with Nina and many people from the debating society, which I am really starting to feel connected to.
These were the motions:
Round 1:
Assimilation policies include but are not limited to: - compulsory training in language and social, cultural and economic norms - sending migrants’ kids to regular public schools, - increasing contact with majority population (housing, jobs, social life etc.).
This House believes that the EU members states should introduce mandatory assimilation policies for immigrants who intend to stay longer than 2 years
Round 2:
In Mexico, the production, sale and consumption of all drugs are illegal. In spite of this, Mexican drug cartels dominate the wholesale illicit drug market, controlling around 90% of the cocaine entering the United States. The illicit drug market is the reason for very severe and brutal conflicts between drug cartels and the government. Since 2006, the Mexican government started its official war against drug cartels. So far, the war failed in diminishing the influence of drug cartels in any significant manner and resulted in over 120,000 deaths (many of them civilians).
This House would legalize the production, sale and consumption of drugs in Mexico
Round three:
This House would increase unemployment benefits to the level of minimum wage
Round 4:
This House would compensate people found not guilty in criminal trials
FINAL:
Sci-Hub is a website that provides free access to millions of paywalled and open-access research papers and books. Sci-Hub obtains paywalled papers by presenting compromised university usernames and passwords to the publishers' websites via the universities' proxy websites. The means by which Sci-Hub obtains usernames and passwords are legal and illegal.
This House supports the rise of Sci-Hub

Szkoła Debatuje - Lublin
activity: debating tournament
date: 26th January 2019
organization: Klub Debat w Lublinie (Szkoła Debatuje)
You can already guess it; debates, debates, debates. This time a tournament in Lublin, Szkoła Debatuje, only for high schoolers. I originally went with Zuzia, but due to some complications I ended up debating with a guy from Białystok; Kosma. We did great, winning the first debate, placing second in the second, third in the third and second in the last one, which gave us a place in the final! Unfortunately, we didn’t win, but it was a big achievement for me and finally a big sign that I do actually make progress. I ranked 11th in the speakers ran (out of 40), which I am also proud of. This tournament made me look back at the now 5 months I have been debating and the steps I made along the way, with major setbacks, where I thought about quitting and moments when I thought I was doing better than I actually was and needed someone to show me where I’m at. All in all, I am thankful for debating and for every moment I spend doing it and that we have such a fantastic debating club at school, where we have both motivated students and a great teacher, who pushes us to keep getting better.
This tournament was also fun in a social way, I travelled there by car with some students from UW that were organizers and we spent a lot of time talking about debates and other stuff. It’s definitely the best tournament I have been too. In a month we are going to Copenhagen, where we are hoping to also achieve something.
These are the topics that we debated on in Lublin:
(they were very interesting topics, and not too obvious, not too hard, thanks to the amazing CA team we had)
1.  TI żałuje uczestnictwa prywatnych firm wojskowych w konfliktach i misjach pokojowych.
2.  TI uważa, że ruchy LGBT powinny aktywnie krytykować hook-up culture.

activity: debating tournament
date: 22nd December 2018
organization: Klub Debat w Białymstoku
It is intensive debating season. This weekend we went away to Białysok. We meaning: Świątki sister (Marysia and Zosia), Tosia and me. It was a one-day Christmas tournament, on the weekend before Christmas. For Mary, Zosia and Tosia it was the first tournament ever. Mary and Zosia got to the novice final, which is great. Tosia and I, unfortunately, didn’t get that far, but it was a lot of fun and definitely a good experience for us both. It was an open tournament, with a lot of people, who often are our trainers, so it was not easy. We rented an apartment for the four of us, and ‘made’ our own pre-Christmas meal involving grilled cheese and ordered pizza. It was an amazing weekend.

Polska Liga Debat - Kraków
activity: volunteering on a debating tournament
date: 16th December 2018
organization: Klub Debat Parlamentarnych UJ
This weekend I went away with Marysia Świątek from IB2 to a debating tournament in Cracow. This time we didn’t go to debate, but to volunteer there. It was an open tournament, with a lot of students too, so we were happy to just observe. Our tasks involved collecting ballots and bringing them to a specific room, putting cookies on a tray, making sure there was enough coffee and tea and giving people lunch. It wasn’t hard, but it was fun, as we could also observe the debates and I think I learned a lot. Of course, we had a lot of fun on the trip. Next time we will be ready to come and win.
