Food was important in my ma’s family. It was one of the things that cemented us together. Mamó, my ma, my Aunt Mo, all my uncles’ wives, me -- we cooked for each other. We spread what we had around the family to make sure nobody had to go without. And Steve, too, ‘cause he was basically family. Whenever he was poorly, Ma or Aunt Mo would make a crock of soup for me to bring to him and Mrs. Rogers. I know the kids like to joke online these days about love bein’ stored in the potato, but it’s true. Food is love. Cookin’ a meal that you know your cousin or your sister or your friend is gonna enjoy, somethin’ that’ll fill their belly and make ‘em smile -- that’s love. And I still do that, ‘cause it’s important. You can tell people you care about ‘em all you like, but you gotta show it somehow, too. You need the words and the actions.
