I meet my doppelganger by chance when I'm on my way back from therapy. The clinic is in the middle of the city, so it's only about fifteen minutes away by bus and the buildings around it are relatively fancy. The waiting room is a mishmash of businesslike types who're clearly there because it's right next to their offices, and people like me who are broke and can't afford to pay full price for a doctor so we go to the doctors that bulk bill and try our best to get decent medical treatment out of it. The therapist there doesn't bulk bill, but if you get a doctor's referral she only charges $40 each for six sessions. We've discussed a recent diagnosis, but before I could really get into how it's been affecting me it's 11:30 and I'm gently ushered out of the hall. I hear her talking to her next patient as she leads them back through. I pay my $40 and I wish I had enough money to get food. I leave and head back through the city to the bus station. I can see someone walking up the path in my direction. I'm surprised how much he looks like me. He looks surprised too. He's several meters away by the time I realize that we're the same.
He's in a button-down and slacks. Under his expression of surprise is one of permanent stress and exhaustion etched into his face. What surprises me is that he's as big as I am, round-faced with thick limbs. I feel guilty for noticing it. I feel guilty for being that way. I can see on his face that he feels guilty, too.
Our paths aren't diverging. I have to go to the bus station. I want to go home. He's got a coffee in his hand and he looks like he wants to get back to work. With opposite paths we're being pulled together and my heart races with nerves as he draws near. People talk a lot about what you'd do if you met your doppelganger. They tend either towards fucking or killing them, with some gentler types noting that they'd hug and befriend that mirror of the self. The possibilities flash through my mind as the distance between us closes begrudgingly, but all of them make me want to throw up, even the thought of talking to him. I don't want to see this, I realize, don't want to meet his eye when he gets close enough for me to see the colour of them. He drops his gaze a second before I drop mine and we push our bodies to opposite extremes of the sidewalk, my shoulder almost grazing against storefronts in my urgent need to stay clear of him. I don't see what he does but I can tell he's doing it. I can see the wide-eyed panic on his face before it glazes over into dissociation. I can feel it on mine. I'm glad I couldn't afford food. I'm not sure I would've eaten it. I think it might have gotten tainted.
I take the bus home and I'm relieved when I reach the normalcy of my bedroom. The dishes on the drawers are as comforting as always. It's too hot to be under the blankets but I crawl under anyway and I don't know what to do and I can't sleep and I wonder if he sleeps better than me and I play a game on my phone until I'm distracted enough to breathe again. As soon as I stop, I wonder if his dad's in jail and how much he eats and why he doesn't seem like he's disabled and I'm suddenly enraged that there might be a version of me out there that actually got a fighting chance at life and my stupid phone game stops working for me so I get up to make some bread. An hour later I've convinced myself that it was just psychosis rearing its ugly head again, and I resolve to talk to my boyfriend about it and what it might mean, and within a week I'm pretty much okay. I don't book another appointment with that therapist. It was my fifth session anyway. I know I won't have another $40 next week. The electricity bill's coming in soon. You have to have priorities.
It gets worse after a month. The avoidance starts to spread. It's another patch of the sprawling capital that I can't go. First it's just the area straight up from the bus station into the main CBD. Then I figure he must go shopping often there if he has a fancy desk job, so I start avoiding the shops. He probably has the same taste as me, so I keep the same clothes I've always had and hope this coming summer isn't too hot. I get on the bus to visit a friend one day and the two-minute stop in the station makes my skin crawl. On the trip back home I feel like I'm burning alive. I resent him for taking the city away from me. I'm struggling to leave the house. I live so close to the city. It's too close for comfort. I buy a plane ticket.
My boyfriend is understanding. He lives in another country, so as long as I have a reliable internet connection he moves where I move. In the airport, I don't feel as excited as I feel like I should. All of my trauma is anchoring me here, and I'm relieved to be getting out, but I feel like a dog on a chain. Still, it's better than staying. The flight doesn't take long. I'm comfortable. It stops off in Sydney, then we fly over the strait and land in the Hobart airport. Everything goes smoothly. I get off the plane and go to baggage collection.
There's someone there dressed like me, and I swear to god if it's that fucking guy again I am going to be absolutely humiliated. I squint at him - he hasn't seen me, I think - and sure enough, it's me again. He's wearing a T-shirt and jeans. It's a stupid shirt with a picture of a wolf on it. I don't own it, but god, I wish I did. It rules. I'm completely miserable about it.
You can usually feel it when someone's watching you, and yeah, he feels it. He looks up from his phone and glances at me then does a double take, and it's incredibly embarrassing to see. I wonder if it's as embarrassing to see how shocked I am to see him. The chagrin on his face is making me want to scream. The baggage is moving so slowly. It's so slow. I rip my eyes from him and we pointedly avoid looking at each other while constantly shooting looks at each other to check if one of us has moved or done anything. I decide as soon as I see my baggage that this isn't going to work and I blow the rest of my savings on the soonest flight back to Perth that I can get. I ask my best friend if I can stay with them and they're confused but fine with it. I call my boyfriend and he's worried for me. I understand. Things are weird right now, but things with him are fine. I love him. I'm back home two days later and I sleep for 18 hours in my best friend's spare room. They live a little further out of the city. I'm comforted by that. I'm pretty sure my doppelganger is the kind of person to stay in Tasmania. Better prospects, I'd guess. That comforts me, too.
A year later, my boyfriend moves here to be with me, and we relocate about forty minutes north of the river. I don't know that my doppelganger thought I was going to stay in Tasmania and moved back here too, back to his career in architecture and what ends up being three dogs in his unit south of the river. We don't end up crossing paths. I don't need to go to the city anymore, and if I ever go further south than that, I'm always driving and I never happen to go exploring down there. I have everything I need. Several years pass.
I'm off to the shops. My husband is at work, and my freelance work isn't due for another week, so I figure I can have the day off. The small local supermarket that I grew up with has been converted into a gargantuan mall over the past thirty years. Whenever I walk through it I feel strange. The very middle of it is exactly the same; a heart of cream and turquoise with polished white linoleum floors. I remember how it echoed one Thursday night when I was fifteen and shopping for school shoes and I sang and yelled and laughed until I realized there were a few other stray shoppers and shut my mouth up very, very tight. It could never echo now. Even at 6am, the whole place is packed. I wouldn't come here, except that Lush has announced that one of my favourite soaps is being discontinued, and I want to go to the store here to stock up before it's gone forever.
I'm dismayed upon arrival to find that what once was a towering stack of yellow and gold marbled soap is now a nearly empty display. There's just one chunk of soap left, and it's relatively small. Probably won't last me more than a few months. My disappointment quickly makes way for relief as I dodge my way through swaths of excited teenagers to get into the store, making a beeline for the last of the soap. Hurrying and bumping people on my way, I finally get to the display. With a sigh of relief, I reach my hand out - but quickly draw it back as it brushes against the hand of another. He has a small white circle of a scar on his left thumb. I look up in alarm and my doppelganger stares astonished back at me.
We look at each other for a very long time. Some teenage hand winds between us and takes its prize. I'm starting to become aware of the looks the staff members are giving us. The doppelganger is, too. His eyes are grey. I've seen that look before, when I catch myself in the mirror when I don't expect it. The whites of my eyes shine back at me like glossy eggshells. Both of us are as terrified as each other. It doesn't make it better.
The intense anxiety of the outside eyes upon us breaks the spell, and in an instant the both of us are marching shakily out of the store and in opposite directions. I'm heading out to my car. I don't know where he's going. I don't want to. All I know, all that can calm me right now, is that I could tell from his expression that this was not where he usually conducted his shopping trips. I knew what he'd wanted was the same as me. I wonder if his dad is dead. I leave the mall empty-handed.
I don't go to there anymore.

May Street Larder opens second venue at The Mezz.
Mt Hawthorn residents will no longer need to travel to East Freo for a Soul Sandwich when the owners of May Street Larder open a second venue at The Mezz on Friday 15th March, 2019.
“When I saw the last operator close its doors, I did think to myself that May Street Larder would do well in the area but decided not to pursue the space due to my family commitments and an already solid workload! A few months later we were approached by Hawaiian Group who had the same idea, so I saw that as a sign and we started to figure out a way to make it work,” says co-owner Eamon Sullivan.
May Street Larder’s menu, created by executive chef and co-owner Scott Bridger, strives for balance above all else, serving up a mixture of healthy, convenient and delicious food with a few indulgences thrown in for good measure. The May Street Larder staples, such as the beef brisket hash, breakfast burrito and vegan bircher have made the cut, along with the famous Soul Sandwich, which has been consistently voted one of WA’s top dishes! The rest of the opening menu will be new additions, bulked out with a plentiful cabinet of fresh salads, gourmet sandwiches, croissant and house made sausage rolls and pies. Wash it all down with a house-made kombucha, newly released nitro and cold brew from Campos Coffee, or perhaps a specialty gin & tonic with a May Street Larder twist.
“Our food direction will be on point with the original May Street Larder ethos of locally sourced, community-based food with a naughty and nice theme - that is to say there is something for everyone whether you are feeling like a treat or looking for something healthier,” says Scott.
In addition to dining in, May Street Larder @ The Mezz will also incorporate a new and improved Larder, with all of its most popular house-made items such as jams, preserves, pickles, plus cookbooks, gourmet cheeses, butters olives, dips PLUS a selection of ready-made meals to take home.
“In Victorian times, a lot of pickling, fermenting and preserving was done in certain seasons to prolong the use of items that were seasonal and the larder where you stored it before it was cooked and served. We’d always wanted to bring that ancient art back into fashion in a modern way and so will continue to make our own in-house fermented, pickled, cured and preserved items – all the stuff we have been making for years now that have become part of our DNA at May Street Larder” said Eamon.
The new venue is child-friendly with a custom-made, interactive play area in one end of the function room (the children’s items are able to be cleverly stowed away during functions).  Choose from the internal dining space or leafy, alfresco area if you fancy a bit of fresh air.  Local residents need not cook if they don’t feel like it – simply choose your favourite dish from the Grab n Go section featuring house made, fresh options to takeaway for dinner.
MSL is always striving for ways to improve and the new venue will also see the Braille menus available for vision impaired customers that were launched last year at both Bib & Tucker and the original MSL. Eco initiatives include the One Straw concept; for a gold coin donation the customer receives a reusable straw, with all proceeds going to fund ocean, beach and marina clean ups here in Perth. MSL also encourages locals to bring in their excess home-grown citrus fruit to receive 10% off their next meal in an effort to reduce waste.
May Street Larder @ The Mezz officially opens on Friday 15th March.

Tips for Cleaning and Maintenance of Cold Room
Summary: For pharmaceutical and food industries, from young start-ups to long-established companies, storing products and produce safely in reliable walk-in cold rooms is an integral part of the job.
Tumblr media
Cold rooms offer a hygienic and professional way of storing your bulk orders or surplus supplies. However, they need to be looked after to ensure the goods are being stored in a sterile environment and conditions that keep the products fresher safe for longer for human consumption.
If your cool room hire in Perth is for business purposes, it is vital that you maintain the space. Here’s cold room cleaning instructions and maintenance tips.
What is the Best Cold Room Cleaning process?
Hygiene is vital for the preparation and storage of food or medicine. The thorough organization, maintenance, and cleaning of the cold room effectively ensure that your product stays safe to consume or administer.
How to clean a cold storage room?
A good cold room cleaning process includes keeping the floor and surfaces clean and clear all the time. You can use a vacuum cleaner for any buildup of dust on the floor and tackle surfaces with a cloth, warm water, and mild detergent or specialist cold room cleaning products. Make sure you clean the spillages and discard spoiled products immediately. It will help prevent bacteria growth.
After cleaning, you should check whether the cold room is dry. Excess water can be a safety hazard if you create an ice buildup in your cold room.
How Should You Carry Out Cold Room Cleaning?
There is different urgency for making sure the cold room is the safest environment possible. For example, some cold room maintenance checklist tasks should be carried daily. On the other hand, cold storage cleaning chores can be completed weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.
Daily Cold Room Maintenance Checks and Cleaning
Clean the Spillages immediately
Check if the cold room temperature is correct for the products
Inspect the evaporator for a buildup of ice
You should check the compressors in the cold room for oil leakage
Check the Freon levels in the cold room
What are the Benefits of hiring a Cold Room?
As cleanliness and maintenance of your cold room are important for ensuring high business standards, renting a commercial cold room is a great way to remove a bulk of the stress of the upkeep.
The cold storage facilities are already certified and suitable for use in the food industries and any business requiring a chilled environment to store products. They are well equipped and maintained with state-of-the-art cooling systems. If you face issues that need repair or maintenance due to technical faults – we will take care of them for you.
Hygiene for those working in the food industry is a top priority. That’s why the cold rooms are built from 100 mm composite hygienic panels. It is constructed to the highest standard and needs no capital outlay from you, making them suitable for any business, small or big. You can find frozen storage at the same locations as our commercial kitchens, delivery kitchens and dark kitchens to rent.

The way we use plastic needs to stop. A great majority of the plastic we use is single-use...a plastic container ➕ plastic cutlery with takeaway food, a drink in a plastic bottle, a plastic straw ➕ a plastic bag...➕ we will use the majority of these for what, approximately 30 mins! The scariest part is every bit of plastic that has ever been made still exists!! Plastic has only been around for about 50yrs ➕ while we estimate it will take about 500-1000yrs to break down we don't really know!! Up to 12.7 MILLION tonnes of plastic is washed into our oceans EVERY YEAR ➕ in 2006 it was estimated that 46 000 pieces of plastic were found in every square mile of 💦. This plastic breaks down into very small pieces that we call micro-plastics. These become very efficient absorbers (➕releasers) of toxins ➕ become part of the food chain. Plastic has been shown to cause the death of more than a million sea 🐦 every year ➕ over 100 000 marine mammals. Living completely waste free isn't possible in today's world so instead of striving for perfection ➕ giving up let's just do the best we can. Reducing your plastic use isn't something hard, it just requires some very SMALL lifestyle changes by us as the consumers. Bring your own bags to the shop, get a reusable ☕️ cup (even the disposable paper ones usually have a plastic lining), say no to plastic straws, use a stainless steel 💦 bottle, reuse plastic that you already have as much as possible (containers, bags ect) ➕ after they break invest in a more sustainable option, bring your own containers for takeaway food, buy loose produce instead of the prepackaged fruit/veges or invest in your own reusable cloth produce bags, shop at bulkfood stores like @thesourcebulkfoods where you can fill up on not only bulk foods but beauty ➕ cleaning products without all the packaging (@lush_ausnz is also good ➕ so is @santebyenjo )➕ ladies use a menstrual cup! Please get on board the plastic-free revolution! It will not only benefit the environment ➕ all it's beautiful creatures, particularly in our oceans but also will benefit you, your health ➕ your wallet!!!! Plastic is over!!! Well it NEEDS to be 🌎💚💙 (at Perth, Western Australia)

Choosing The Right Insulated Coffee Cup For Your Daily Grind
For many of us, coffee is more than just a beverage; it's a ritual, a source of comfort, and an essential part of our daily routine. Whether you're brewing at home, stopping by your favorite café, or grabbing a cup on the way to work, the right insulated coffee cup can elevate your coffee experience to new heights. With an abundance of options on the market, selecting the perfect insulated coffee cup can seem overwhelming. However, by considering a few key factors, you can find the ideal cup to suit your needs and preferences.
Tumblr media
Size And Capacity
Consider how much coffee you typically consume and whether you prefer single servings or larger quantities. Insulated coffee cups come in various sizes, ranging from small espresso cups to large travel mugs. Choose a size that accommodates your daily caffeine intake without being too bulky or cumbersome to carry.
Lid Design
The lid is a critical component of an insulated coffee cup, as it helps prevent spills and maintains temperature retention. Look for a lid that seals tightly to prevent leaks and drips and has a convenient opening for drinking. Some lids also feature additional features, such as slide closures or built-in straws, for added functionality.
Heat Retention
One of the primary benefits of insulated coffee cups is their ability to keep your coffee hot for an extended period. Please pay attention to the cup's insulation technology and how long it claims to keep beverages hot or cold. Double-walled vacuum insulation is among the most effective methods for heat retention, keeping your coffee piping hot for hours on end.
Eco-Friendly Options
If sustainability is important to you, consider opting for an insulated coffee cup that is reusable and environmentally friendly. Many brands offer cups made from recycled materials or sustainable alternatives to plastic. By choosing a reusable cup, you can reduce waste and minimize your environmental impact while enjoying your favorite brew.
Compatibility With Brewing Methods
Enhance your coffee experience by considering how you typically brew your coffee and choosing a cup that is compatible with your preferred brewing method. For instance, if you enjoy the rich flavors of pour-over coffee or French press, look for a cup with a wide mouth that can accentuate the pour spout or plunger. If you savor the intense aromas of espresso-based drinks, choose a cup that fits under your espresso machine's portafilter to fully capture those scents.
Style And Aesthetics
Finally, remember to choose a coffee cup that reflects your style and tastes. Whether you prefer sleek and minimalist designs or bold colors and patterns, there's a wide range of options available to suit every aesthetic preference.
Conclusion
In conclusion, selecting the right insulated coffee cup is a personal decision that depends on your lifestyle, preferences, and priorities. By considering factors such as material, size, lid design, heat retention, eco-friendliness, and style, you can find the perfect cup to complement your daily coffee ritual. With the right insulated coffee cup in hand, you can savor every sip of your favorite brew, whether you're at home, on the go, or anywhere in between.

Best known for aliens and Elvis, this remote town is now at the vanguard of a global revolution

Best known for aliens and Elvis, this remote town is now at the vanguard of a global revolution
The radio transmission set off from the Sea of Tranquility on the near side of the Moon. In a little more than one second, it crossed the 200,000 miles separating Earth from its nearest celestial neighbor, racing toward its final destination. But, before heading on to Mission Control in Houston and then to televisions around the globe, it visited a rural Australian outpost, where the operators of 200-foot radio telescope listened to those fateful words ring out.
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Chart a map of human history, and you will find Parkes, Australia at the precise center, drawn equally toward the old and the new, the past and the future. Parkes is home to the radio telescope that beamed Neil Armstrong into living rooms everywhere — a facility later deployed by no less than Stephen Hawking in the search for extraterrestrial life. But the town of less than 12,000 is principally an agrarian community, comprised of farmers who raise cattle and grow wheat, more connected to the ground beneath their feet than the stars above their heads. Even its relationship to art and music betrays a certain timelessness. Parkes is both the birthplace of one of Australia’s leading country music artists and the site of its biggest Elvis festival.
It was here, where, faced with a years-long drought that desiccated farms and depleted farmers, Parkes looked once again to the future. Locals responded to the Big Dry not with complacency or fatalism, but by strapping on their rhinestones and building one of the largest solar farms for a thousand miles.
“We had just been through what we referred to as the Millennium Drought, and people were very concerned about climate change and the effect it was having on our community,” said Parkes Mayor Ken Keith, a high school science teacher turned sheep farmer who has served on the Parkes Shire Council since 1983.
“You can do as much preparation as you can for a drought — put away stored fodder and so forth to feed your livestock — but there comes a time when, if the drought goes longer than 12 months, then it gets very difficult to justify buying additional food to keep animals alive,” he said, explaining that when fields go dry and barren, cattle and sheep go hungry, and farmers are forced to sell their livestock.
“It does have an effect on the economy,” he said. “The North Parkes copper mine was very important to a lot of farmers during that Millennium Drought, because a lot of people were able to get some employment there driving trucks and things at the mine to keep them afloat at the farm.”
In the wake of the drought, the town committed itself to the fight against climate change. The council brought homeowners together to buy rooftop solar panels in bulk and installed photovoltaic cells on public buildings. Most impressively, the council laid out plans for a $105 million solar farm that would power up to 21,000 homes. “It actually adjoins my property, so I get to look at it every day from the hill on my place,” Keith said.
Parkes has plans for two more solar installations nearby, a move driven as much by worries about climate change as by the high cost of power. “We will nearly be able to generate as much energy as we consume in our shire once those other solar plants are completed,” Keith said, adding that the town’s new sewage and water treatment plants will also feature solar panels.
“We have to pump our water from a river and an aquifer 35 kilometers away. It costs us a million dollars a year to pump that water. So, if we can generate our own power, then we can save some of those pumping costs,” Keith said. He explained that Parkes has also built a water recycling facility to guard against future shortages. “We put recycled water on our sporting fields, golf courses, wheat fields and things, so that we get two uses of the water after it has been pumped, and we have some savings there as well,” he said.
Where other politicians might waffle on climate and energy, Keith is decidedly frank. “Look, particularly in the rural communities, there are people out there who think climate change is not happening, that it’s just a natural cycle,” he said. “The science is irrefutable that it is happening, and we need to do our little bit.” He noted that, across Australia, climate change is fueling drought, heat waves, wildfires and intense rainfall. “We’re seeing more extreme events in our area,” he said.
Parkes stands out in Australia, where the conservative government has done little to address the carbon crisis. “Politically, we are seeing a lot of federal inaction on climate change, so it’s really the states and territories and also local governments that are picking up the slack,” said Alix Pearce, director of the Cities Power Partnership, which is working with Parkes and other local governments to tackle climate change. She said that Parkes is “the definition of a renewable-energy trailblazer.”
Other advocates agreed. “Parkes is showing real leadership around this issue,” said Fiona Ivits, media advisor for Australian climate nonprofit the Climate Council, which oversees the Climate Power Partnership. “Other towns and cities around them are beginning to pick up the pace. I think it’s a really powerful testament to how a bit of leadership and vision at that local government level can actually have a fairly wide-ranging impact.”
Parkes is well-positioned to proselytize about clean energy. Though remote, the town attracts visitors from all over the country. The Elvis festival alone draws more than 26,000 people, up from a couple of hundred when it started in 1993. “It took ten years to become an overnight success,” said Keith, who likes to dress up for the festival. “I’m not sure I’m quite an Elvis impersonator, but I do put an Elvis suit on.”
Parkes also lies at the intersection of a railway from Sydney to Perth and a planned railway connecting Melbourne and Brisbane. “We are starting to evolve a national logistics hub here,” Keith said. “We might well become the Chicago of Australia.” Once the new line is completed, Parkes will draw yet more visitors. More people will come and see what the town has accomplished.
It was nearly 50 years ago that Parkes linked two distant explorers to the rest of humanity, offering a dazzling glimpse of what the future might hold. In the decades since, the town has not lost a shred of its pioneering spirit. It now finds itself at the forefront of a global revolution, replacing fuels that have done so much violence to our planet with the latest in clean energy technology. Each solar panel, each battery may be one small step, but together they herald a giant leap for mankind.

10 Ways to eat organic on a tight budget
The controversy over whether it’s better to eat organic or conventional food is still alive and well. Many of the debates have focused on whether or not there are any measurable nutritional benefits to eating organic food, while others point out that organic growers still do use pesticides, including a small number of synthetic ones. However, as a recent post in the Sacramento Bee points out, this is the wrong debate to be having.
The debate should be over the impact of farming practices on the food chain. When we shift the conversation to the question of growing practices, the issue becomes a lot less black and white.
Organic farmers generally use ecologically sound practices that encourage conservation and minimal waste. And while there is still not enough research out there to demonstrate the health effects of organic or natural pesticides (with few exceptions: tobacco, for example, is a commonly used pesticide in organic farming and one that I use in my own urban garden. But it is highly toxic to humans and can penetrate the skin), there is a large body of research that demonstrates the harm that many synthetic pesticides cause to human health.
Some conventional farmers are not certified organic, but use organic growing methods. They should not be cast as examples of the evils of industrial agriculture. In fact, getting organic certification is more difficult than ever, and the problem is compounded by the fact that organic farmers have much less access to subsidies and resources to make their operations financially prosperous.
The difficulties and expenses involved in running an organic farm operation is just one of the reasons why organic food costs more to buy. But buying organic food need not be cost-prohibitive. In fact, there are many ways you can buy organic food and not break the bank.
Some of those ways are discussed in Go Green without Going Broke. (It’s on sale right now: $3.99 on Amazon.com for the next week, so please, get a copy and tell me what you think. The price will be going up soon…)
Here are 10 additional ways that you can buy organic food without having to stretch your food budget out of shape:
Buy in bulk – online. The online grocery shopping market has expanded to include many more organic offerings. Even better, there are now a growing number of organic food companies that specialize in organic fare and that will let you buy bulk, and that ship straight to you. Some of these companies require membership, while others let you buy as much as you like with no other obligations. In the US, Sunfood Superfoods, True Foods Market, Vitacost, Azure Standard and Thrive Market have an extensive selection of offerings and offer discounts, sales, and even (for Sunfood Superfoods) free shipping if you buy a certain dollar amount of items. In Canada, try Organic Matters or Yupik. In the UK go to BuyBigOrganic. In Australia look at the organic supply database, OrganicFood.com. If you have a US- based business (or want to sign up for your school, non-profit, or online store), you should also check out Organic Wholesale, which has over 20,000 organic foods and specialty products to choose from, and ships free when your purchase totals at least $50.
Eat frozen. Decades after nutritionists told us about the benefits of eating frozen foods, many of us still believe that frozen is not as nutritious as fresh food. In fact, frozen is not only nutritionally similar to fresh foods, it may be healthier in some cases. Here are 3 reasons why. First, frozen foods are typically picked at their peak ripeness, when they’re at the height of their nutritional content. Second, the freezing process only minimally affects the nutritional content of produce. Third, frozen produce lasts longer than its fresh counterparts. Don’t hang on to it in your freezer for over one year, though. After a year, it loses nutrients as a result of the oxidation process inherent in storage. And avoid boiling your frozen produce, which causes a loss of most of its nutrients. By steaming or microwaving it instead, you can come closer to meeting the recommended daily allowances, with associated nutritional content, from your fruit and veggie consumption.
Plan meals for the week and buy only what you need. Do I need to elaborate on this? Instead of shopping for organic fare on the fly, buying whatever looks good to you at the moment (which always results in spending more money on food), make one day of the week a meal planning day. For maximum savings, start by looking at what you already have in your cabinet, and build meals around that. Need some help planning meals? Try our handy weekly meal planner or healthy grocery shopping list. Want to know what food are best to buy organic? We have a cheat sheet for that too. Download to your phone or print and take with you on your next shopping trip.
Grow your own (organically). Urban gardening is a real phenomenon nowadays. While it may be hard to believe that urban farming can transform cities and save us from the evils of big agriculture, as some have claimed, it does have some advantages over current agricultural practices (not limited to, but including, big ag). Don’t know where to start? Try this free ebook from Patrick at Urbanvine.co. and learn how to begin or improve your farming game. In early May, Green and Prosperous will be offering some online organic urban farming courses as well. Sign up for our mailing list to be notified when the course becomes available, and to be eligible for limited-time discounts.
Barter with local farmers. Most farmers have a rough go. The last thing they want to do is have to advertise their wares, on top of all the back breaking work they do just to keep the farm going. And yet, getting their products to market, and finding new markets are two of the most persistent problems that farmers face, aside from lack of access to capital. Here’s where you can help, and benefit. Do you have a skill that you could use to help an organic farmer advertise his or her business? Can you set up a website? Do you know how to market on social media? What about labor? Can you lend a hand? Many farmers need help with labor, especially during sowing and harvesting seasons. Others still would like to take advantage of the grant opportunities that are available (for example, through the US Department of Agriculture or the European Union’s Single Payment Scheme (SPS)), but have no experience or time to write grant proposals. If you have skills, or just a good set of hands and a willingness to work hard, you can trade them for food. Find opportunities by 1) visiting a local farm or farmer’s market and speaking to individuals personally. (If they look busy, just ask when or how you could contact them outside of market hours, or whether they have a phone number or website with email where you could reach them). 2) Volunteer to man someone’s booth in exchange for food. This method works best with farmers who you develop some kind of rapport with beforehand, like that farmer whose veggie stand you’ve been visiting weekly for the past month.
Buy in-store organic brands (but beware of some corporate brands). Many large stores now offer their own brand of organic fare. Whole Foods’ 365 Brand, Safeway’s O Organics, Albertson’s Wild Harvest, Publix’s Green Wise, Tesco’s Organic, and Sainsbury’s SO organic are among the many store brands available. However, be aware that some corporate organic brands may be diluting the standards for organic products. Others are playing both sides of the food game, with their organic brands promoting GMO-free fare while the corporation behind that brand working to dismiss claims about the harmful effects of GMOs, or actively trying to suppress efforts to legislate for GMO labeling.
Join an organic co-op. (Caveat: these are not always the cheapest option, and you’ll need to shop around for the best prices) Generally understood, a co-op is any member-owned, voluntary organization comprising of a group of people (or organizations) formed for their mutual financial benefit. Food co-ops have been around a long time, but they weren’t always ideal. Remember the days of food co-ops that you had to drive far and wide to reach, that had very limited selections of organic food, exorbitant membership fees, and high prices? (I do.) These days, there are many choices in the food co-op game, and organic food co-ops are among them. Don’t know where to find a co-op near you? Try this directory if you live in the US: http://www.coopdirectory.org/. Based in Canada? Try the Ottawa Valley Food Co-op, the Ontario Natural Food Co-op (if you have a group of 5 or more families), Eat Local Grey Bruce (in Ontario), or the East End Food Co-op (in Vancouver).  Live in the U.K.? Type “organic food” into the keyword search box at Cooperatives UK. In Australia? The University of Sydney has a food co-op that’s open to everyone. Other food co-ops elsewhere in the country include Thoughtful Foods (New South Wales), Peach ‘n’ Pear (Ellwood section of Melbourne), and The People’s Market (Perth).
Join a CSA. CSAs work like this: you purchase a share (or partial share) of the seasonal harvest, and a fresh, local supply of fruits and/or veggies is delivered to you (or to a designated place) at intervals (e.g. weekly, biweekly) determined by the farmer(s). The concept is similar to purchasing a subscription. Some growers offer additional products: honey, flowers, eggs, and bread, for example. Not long ago, buying CSA shares — at anywhere from $200 on up for a full share — was out of the reach of most families that were cash-strapped or low income. In part because of new incentives at the level of the US federal government, which have enabled small-scale farmers to benefit financially and spread their reach, and in part because of a growing interest in healthier eating among families across the income spectrum, many farmers have now begun to make purchasing CSAs more affordable for people on a tight budget. If you qualify as low-income, you may be able to pay for your shares on a weekly basis, contributing as little as USD $10 a week for a half share commitment. Payment installations are also being offered by some CSAs in Canada, the UK, and Australia. In the U.S., a few major grocery chains have also begun to offer CSA signups at similar prices, enabling those with less cash up front to not only purchase shares cheaply, but also to save the cost of traveling to the farm to pick up their shares. Instead, shares are delivered to the grocery store and you can collect them while you shop for the rest of your family’s needs. Find a CSA through these databases: Local Harvest (US, Canada), Community Supported Agriculture (UK), or Natural Bridge Organics (Gold Coast, Australia). You can also just Google “CSA” and the name of your city or province to find one near you.
Contact your local Weston A. Price Foundation. The mission of this non-profit foundation, founded in 1999, is to restore “nutrient-dense foods to the human diet through education, research and activism.” One of their local chapters (located in 41 countries) can help you find fresh, organic food, CSAs, food-co-ops, farmers, and holistic healthcare practitioners. Local chapters also host cooking classes, potluck dinners and other activities, all with the goal of helping you integrate whole, healthy foods into your lifestyle.
Look for sales and coupons on organic items. Search in store or online. Make it even easier to find discounts and sales by signing up to receive a list of deals on organic, natural, and GMO-free products, whether you live in the US, Canada, UK, or Australia.
Finally, there is one thing you can do to make sure that we’re all able to afford healthy, organic food in the long term. Shop for those brands that practice and support responsible growing, producing, and animal husbandry practices. If you stop buying chicken eggs from chickens that spent their lives cooped up in pens, eating the kind of food you’d never consume yourself, then manufacturers will be forced to stop (or engage less in) raising chickens that way. If you press legislators for GMO labeling, they will support GMO labeling. If you buy more organic fare, more manufacturers will switch to making more organic fare. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
Sometimes the only way to bring change is to be the change you want to see.

How You Can Choose the Best Ice Bags for Commercial Usage
The use of dry ice or block ice is very common in various industries and food processing units. Nowadays, various sellers offer dry ice in bulk amount for industries. In this article, you will know about the various ways to choose the best ice bags for commercial purpose.
Summer is in full swing, and the yearly demand for dry packaged ice is in high demand. The convenience stores, marinas, hotels, catering companies, and other types of packaged ice distributors get benefitted from the seasonal demand for ice sales. Still, the packaged ice sale happens throughout the rest of the years, mainly around holidays. If you are selling and providing the ice in bulk amount, the important thing you should keep in mind is ordering and buying the wholesale bags of ice in Perth.
Tumblr media
There are various options in terms of types, materials, printing, and sizes. Here are some tips you can follow while choosing the right type of plastic ice bags for your requirements.
1.      Quality Matters
If the ice bags are poorly manufactured, they will further cause several issues. If the ice bag plastic is too thin, they often break down, making the whole situation a mess and cost you money. Hence, there is no point in buying substandard ice bags just for saving few bucks. If you look for quality ice bags, they are not too expensive as you think, and the additional hassle and waste linked with the cheap ice bags can be avoided if you use good quality bags for ice transport.
2.      Basic options of ice bags
There are few basic three ice cube bags available in the market- the open top, the automatic and the semiautomatic ice bags, and wickets for ice bagging machines. You can choose the type of ice bag that fits your requirements and order.
Open Top Ice Bags -are the type of ice bag that features a plain top that is closed with the twist tie. These bags are available in 5lb, 8lb, and 20lb and 50lb sizes with the pre-printed labels.
Drawstrings Ice Bags- they are built-in cotton drawstrings making these bags easy to close when required. They are also available in 5lb, 8lb, 10lb, and 20lb and 50 lb. sizes.
Wicketed Ice Bags- they have the ice packagers with auto or semiautomatic bulk ice bagging units, and these bags are used as the commercial ice bags attached with the wicket that holds up to 250 bags one at a time. The ice distributors also use the single wound or centerfold sheeting film roll stock for using them at certain types of high-speed automatic ice packaging units,
Some of the Alternative Uses of Block Ice
Ice is not just used for preserving the cold drinks or used in the coolers. Dry ice is also used for other industrial uses and in the commercial sectors. The dry ice or the block ice is used in the healthcare industries in the ice baths, and the cold compresses. It is also useful to make cold caps for chemotherapy patients. The oil industry uses dry ice for clean tanks. When you think of buying ice bags, it is better to choose a professional seller who has several years of experience and delivers good quality ice bags to various industries at a low rate.

How Bulk Food Stores Perth Are Redefining Grocery Shopping
In recent years, a new trend has been reshaping the way people think about grocery shopping: bulk food stores. These stores, which specialize in selling items in bulk quantities without the need for excessive packaging, have been gaining popularity for their sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and the unique shopping experience they offer. As consumers become increasingly conscious of their environmental impact and seek out more sustainable shopping options, bulk food stores are emerging as a compelling alternative to traditional supermarkets. In this article, we'll explore how bulk food stores Perth are redefining the grocery shopping experience and why they are becoming a preferred choice for many consumers.
Tumblr media
Sustainability At The Forefront
One of the primary reasons why bulk food stores are gaining traction is their commitment to sustainability. By offering products in bulk quantities, these stores help reduce the amount of packaging waste generated by traditional supermarkets. Customers have the option to bring their containers and fill them with the desired quantity of items, eliminating the need for single-use packaging. This not only reduces plastic waste but also minimizes the carbon footprint associated with transportation and manufacturing. Bulk food stores prioritize sustainable practices throughout their operations, from sourcing local and organic products to implementing energy-efficient systems in-store.
Cost-Effective Shopping
Beyond their environmental benefits, bulk food stores also offer significant cost savings for consumers. Buying in bulk allows shoppers to purchase only the amount they need, eliminating unnecessary packaging and reducing overall costs. Additionally, bulk items are often priced lower per unit compared to their packaged counterparts, making bulk food stores an economical choice for budget-conscious shoppers. Whether it's grains, legumes, nuts, spices, or household essentials like cleaning products and personal care items, buying in bulk enables consumers to stretch their dollars further without compromising on quality.
Customized Shopping Experience
Bulk food stores provide a unique and personalized shopping experience that differs from traditional supermarkets. Customers have the freedom to choose the exact quantity of each item they purchase, allowing for greater flexibility and customization. Whether you need a pinch of spices for a recipe or a kilogram of rice to stock up your pantry, bulk food stores cater to a wide range of needs and preferences. This hands-on approach to shopping empowers consumers to take control of their purchases, reducing food waste and promoting mindful consumption.
Supporting Local Communities
Many bulk food stores prioritize sourcing products from local suppliers and producers, fostering stronger connections within the community. By supporting local farmers, artisans, and small businesses, these stores contribute to the local economy and promote sustainable agriculture practices. Customers can feel good knowing that their purchases directly support local producers and help sustain the vitality of their communities. Additionally, bulk food stores often engage in community outreach and education initiatives, raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainable living practices.
Conclusion
As consumers become increasingly conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchasing decisions, bulk food stores Perth are emerging as a beacon of sustainability and responsible consumption. By offering an eco-friendly shopping experience, cost-effective pricing, customization options, and support for local communities, these stores are redefining the way people think about grocery shopping. As the demand for sustainable and ethical products continues to grow, bulk food stores are well-positioned to play a significant role in shaping the future of the grocery industry.
Whether you're looking to reduce waste, save money, or support local producers, a trip to your nearest bulk food store may change the way you shop for groceries forever.
