Burundi’s outgoing president dies, possibly of covid-19
“The Champion of Patriotism” Burundi’s outgoing president dies, possibly of covid-19
Few will mourn Pierre Nkurunziza, whose regime murdered and tortured opponents
IN FOOTBALL, WROTE Jean-Paul Sartre, everything is complicated by the presence of the other team. Pierre Nkurunziza had ways of simplifying things. Burundi’s president, who died on June 8th, would travel with his football team, Hallelujah FC. At matches opponents would shy away from tackles. Some who did not were arrested—a terrifying experience in Mr Nkurunziza’s police state.
The despot’s foul play was apparent off the pitch, too. He became president in 2005, at the end of a civil war, ushering in hope that the country of 11m people could, like neighbouring Rwanda, enjoy some stability. But in 2015, at the end of his term limit, Mr Nkurunziza refused to go. His obstinacy set off tit-for-tat violence, assassinations, a failed coup and the displacement of 400,000 people.
“People hate him,” says a journalist in the country. “During his reign so many people died.” Mr Nkurunziza’s regime murdered and tortured opponents. Corruption and punitive taxes have further impoverished Burundians, 72% of whom live on less than the equivalent of $1.90 per day.
The president agreed not to run for a fourth term in elections in May. Instead he agreed to a new job title: Paramount Leader, Champion of Patriotism and Leadership Core. The vote was rigged in favour of Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is not scheduled to take office until August. Pascal Nyabenda, the speaker of the national assembly and Mr Nkurunziza’s first choice as successor, should fill in as interim president.
Mr Nkurunziza had wanted to run the country from behind the scenes. Now possible rivalry between an interim president and the president-elect could create instability. Then there is the regional picture. Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda have long waged proxy wars in eastern Congo. A power vacuum in Burundi presents a chance for further meddling in its affairs.
The president’s death may, though, allow the country to face up to another pressing issue. He ignored covid-19 and turfed out experts from the World Health Organisation, saying that God would protect Burundi. This may have been his downfall. The government says he died of a heart attack, but local sources whisper that he succumbed to covid-19. His wife was reportedly in Kenya for treatment. His death gives Burundi a chance to tackle the pandemic—and, perhaps, of a bit less foul play. ■

Burundi awaits poll results as opposition alleges fraud
Tumblr media
Polling station closed across Burundi on Wednesday in a largely incident free process in keenly watched general elections. The polls will usher in the post-Pierre Nkurunziza era. But voters also cast ballots for lawmakers and local level representatives. Internet connectivity for social media and messaging apps were blocked early Wednesday morning. Burundians stood in long lines outside polling stations, which opened shortly after six am, most centers had hand washing points for people arriving to vote and election officials had some protective equipments in some instances. After casting his ballot, Nkurunziza praised Burundians for the peaceful conduct of the process which he reiterated had been fully funded with local finances. He also stressed that politics was meant to serve the greater benefit of the populace. He arrived at the polling station on a bicycle surrounded by his guards, he wore a track suit of his club Aleluya FC with a brown cow boy hat with the Burundian flag. Preliminary results are expected by May 25. The election took place despite an outbreak of coronavirus. Burundi has so far recorded 42 cases – 21 active cases, 20 recoveries and one death as of May 21, 2020. Authorities largely ignored protocols by allowing mass rallies to take place despite the World Health Organization’s Africa head openly warning against it. Voters were back to the ballots after five years of turmoil sparked by Nkurunziza’s bid for a disputed third term in 2015. The vote unleashed unrest that left at least 1,200 dead and saw 400,000 flee the country. Meanwhile, main opposition candidate, Agathon Rwasa, has protested what he says is fraud in Wednesday’s general election. He said his party’s election observers were chased away from some polling stations. His National Freedom Council (CNL) party has also accused supporters of the ruling CNDD-FDD party of multiple voting. Neither the electoral commission nor the ruling party has commented on the allegations. In the presidential vote, 5.1 million registered voters are to choose between Nkurunziza’s handpicked heir and frontrunner, 52-year-old general Evariste Ndayishimiye, main opposition competitor Agathon Rwasa, and five other candidates. Young Africans to petition CAS over Bernard Morrison's move to Simba FC
Young Africans have confirmed that they will officially table their appeal on a controversial contract case against Bernard Morrison to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) today.
This was confirmed by the club’s Chairman Mshindo Msolla over the weekend in Dodoma during the inauguration of this year's 'SportPesa Wiki ya Mwananchi' event, which will climax on Sunday at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
“What we want is justice. If CAS will rule that he (Morrison) is our legal player, then Simba (his current club) will be required to follow right procedures to sign him and not what they recently did,” Msolla said.
He added that the Ghanaian player is still included in the club’s list of legal players until they get final judgment of the case from CAS.
Recently, Morrison completed a two-year contract move to traditional rivals Simba and was officially paraded as the new employee of the club during the climax of Simba Day event at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Msolla said they are hopeful that the club will perform well next season basing on the kind of signings they have so far made.
“Let me be clear that all the player transfer deals which are unfolding are being implemented by GSM, including paying all camp expenses, which is not that easy and we highly appreciate their gesture.
“About the new coach, we have already identified him and he is Burundian Cedric Kaze, who will be in the country any day to link up with the team. He was fully involved to select his Assistant Coach, who will be named soon,” he said.
Moreover, the chairman pointed out that as one way to hype morale in the team, from next season, whenever they will be making league trips outside Dar es Salaam, the squad will be accompanied by one of the former players of the team.
The move, he said, is aimed to remind current players how it feels to play at the Jangwani Street based giants.
Moreover, Msolla said that they have adopted new principles in recruiting players after consulting Spain’s LaLiga and Sevilla, which also use similar procedures.
He also admitted that last season’s player recruitment was not good enough in terms of building a title contender side.
Msolla said finishing second on the table last season was not what a big club like Yanga targeted.
Yanga will begin their 2020/2021 Mainland Premier League campaign by hosting Tanzania Prisons on September 6th at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
