I just realized something
There is a VERY big difference between how I treat The Sealed Vessel (favorite character from Hollow Knight) and Leonardo (favorite character from tmnt 2012)
Like I full on want The Sealed Vessel to be happy and loved (and alive) and heal from the events of canon. Full on wrapping them in a blankie and kissing their head, keep them safe from the horrors
Leonardo on the other hand I want to make him HURT. Full on smacking him with the angst hammer and stuffing him in a blender to watch him spin (THEN he can have his healing but he must experience the horrors)
Very much hurt and comfort with those two
(Make them interact Make them interact Make them interact Make them inter)

Hi! I really love your OCs and am working on one of my own. Do you have any advice on design? I’m really finding it hard to differentiate it from its base—that being a tarantula.
Something that couldprobably help would be stylization. look for ways to simplify what a tarantula looks like while still making it look like a tarantula. What are the most iconic traits of a tarantula that make it recognizable as a tarantula? 8 legs, fuzzy, multiple eyes, etc! What are common shapes you see on a tarantula? Usually they’re pretty round, and much bulkier than, say, a black widow or something, right? For example here’s my design for pincer from Starship
Tumblr media
Got all the parts of a scorpion there that make it obvious that that’s supposed to be a scorpion, even though its not EXACT scorpion anatomy. And even then, you dont always have to follow ALL of those characteristics to a T, you can take some liberties. Look at how Hollow Knight simplifies bug designs, for example. Some characters I dont even know what kinds of bugs they’re actually based on, but things like having segmented bodies, wings, antennae, pointy legs, etc show that I’m supposed to be looking at bugs here.
And aside from that the characters personality plays a factor into how you would design them too. Pincer is supposed to be this giant, intimidating, evil alien scorpion who eats brains, so I use a lot of squares and triangles in his design. And since he’s supposed to be big and strong, I made him pretty bulky. But since he’s also kinda decieving and pretends to help the main character, I round him out in certain places instead of just making him super sharp. A shy and timid tarantula character would probably look pretty different as opposed to a very cocky and confident tarantula character, even though they’re both tarantulas, and this can be shown through things like body language and posture, which are also pretty important when creating or designing a character!
And another thing, USE REFERENCE AND INSPIRATION! It’s totally okay to look at other tarantula based character designs to see how another artist designed them. I looked at a lot of designs from stuff like video game enemies to come up with Pincer’s. It helps a lot, and you arent cheating for using a reference.Hope this helps!
