Look, it's 4 am here and I probably shouldn't post this at all but I've been thinking about it a lot for months and something that happened yesterday really drove it home so fuck it.

You guys realize I'm a real fucking person, right? My name is unforth, I run 8 art blogs because I fucking love danmei and I fucking love art. I'm not a bot. There is no algorithm. I do all the finding art, all the tagging, all the queueing, all the organization, by hand. Across my blogs I usually spend about 2 hours a day everyday on this, and that's about enough to barely keep on top of it. If I want to catch up on my huge backlog, it takes longer.

I am a real human. I have a real job. I have a wife. I have two small children (6 and 4). In the past year my wife and I have both had surgery, my son has been sick 5 times already, my kids have had to miss week upon week of school due to illness, covid exposures, car issues, and more. Four members of my extended family have had covid. I could go on, but fuck it.

I do this because I love fandom, I love art, I love artists, and I love organizing things. It's good for my brain. And it means a lot to me to help artists grow their platforms, to help get more eyes on their work, their merch, their commissions, their shops. But I also work my ass off. I own a small business I started 2 years ago that is growing, and doing okay, but has still not done well enough for me to take a single paycheck in that time (the owner always gets paid last. Everyone else gets repaid first).

This blog has something like 1800 followers.

Yesterday I reblogged a thing for my own latest project and just said, "signal boosts appreciated" and I got 1 reblog. From over *eighteen hundred of you*.

My name is unforth. I just adopted two guinea pigs. I think my son is sick again. I had to beg my dad for money to pay our mortgage this month. I've spent hundreds of hours for over two years running this blog and it feels like y'all care *so fucking little* that I might as well be invisible, a bot, a machine, a memory.

I am a real person.

And I'm about this close to saying "fuck it" and walking away from this project because being nothing feels like *shit.*

I don't need or want thanks, but yall should CARE. Not just about me, either. I've seen how few notes artists get on calls for commissions, on their shops, on their personal projects. We're all real people! And no you don't "owe us" but ffs common courtesy suggests if you like what we do you'd help all of us get more eyes on our stuff. No ones saying "give money" but among your followers, or among their followers, there might be someone who Wants The Thing but if the post doesn't spread no one will even know The Thing fucking exists. Folks say they want more indy art, indy stories, queer creators, on and on, but act like even giving a project signal boost is asking too much. I'm so exhausted watching people I care about beg for scraps. I'm so exhausted begging for scraps myself. It should be a no-brainer - if you like what someone creates HIT THE FUCKING REBLOG BUTTON.

And yet.

I'm so tired, yall.

It's now almost 5 am. I shouldn't post this. I'm going to, though. And if I do quit, when I do quit, don't say I didn't warn you.

I just want to clarify that i don't necessarily think shorter fics are bad, also I don't think that they always have terrible pacing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I just find that these days when I'm looking for a fic to read and it's max 1.5K words, I would read it but feel a little disappointed— maybe it's just me looking to get lost in the story for a while longer but that's ultimately how I feel. And also, I guess the length you're used to depends on from what fandom you came and when you started reading, because yes, for many years * my * fanfic experiences were 50+k words per fic (a lot of the trending fics were this long and obviously made the mold for the rest of the people who were starting out, so now I'm just used to bulky pieces of fanfic y'know?) although I'm not much older than you

I realise this is now completely off topic to your original post 🤣 I'm a content creator myself and I just plainly don't know how to get people to engage more with a creator anymore... I talk about this issue almost every day on my own blog but no one ever listens... I sometimes have people scroll through my whole blog and not reblog 1 thing and I've also had the experience of having one of my posts have not just an uneven like to reblog ratio but have 3 times the likes compared to reblogs, which is honestly just frustrating at this point...

oh no worries! it's okay. even if i don't have much to say, i still like hearing what's on other people's minds. i don't mind having this discussion at all. plus, i think i too strayed away from the topic lmao i feel bad, though, 'cause i think you sent this hours ago and i hadn't checked my askbox.

i agree with you. i don't think shorter stuff are bad at all, sometimes things just feel rushed. i'll admit, sometimes when i'm reading a fic that i find really entertaining and i see that it's less than 4k i get a little disappointed. i love the longer stuff because there's so much plot to take in. in fact, most of my favorite writers on here write 10k+. and 50k?? gosh. i lowkey wanna try writing something that long now 🤣

i think i've brought up the issue of uneven likes to reblogs ratios a couple of times, and so have a few friends, but we were ignored even after people spread the posts around. the only explanation at this point that i can possibly drum for as to why people just like and not reblog is that if you reblog too many things in one day tumblr might shadowban the blog or stop the tags from working for a handful of days to a handful of weeks. i've witness it happen to a few people on here and i think it's dumb that tumblr has this whole reblog feature, but if you reblog "too much" you get penalized in a way 😭 that situation is the reason why a lot of us have separate blogs to reblog other people's works or just queue the reblogs to avoid being mistaken for a bot or something. i guess people don't really want to have to make a separate blog or queue the reblogs, and no one is obligated to of course, but... it would be nice. more reblogs mean more exposure. and it's sad because when content creators see less reblogs or interactions in general, they sometimes become discouraged. there has been several times on here where i looked at the number of reblogs on my or my mutuals' bulleted reactions compared to the number of reblogs on my fully written oneshots, or i saw my mutuals who mainly write shorter stuff with like 12 anons engaging in conversation and i wanted to deactivate highkey 🤦🏻‍♀️

sometimes it does become a jealousy thing or just a disappointment to us because we know readers/viewers pick and choose who to interact with, and they usually (from my perspective) pick those who either write smut or write bulleted stuff. for the longest now i've kept my feelings about this bottled in, but i no longer care 😂 it's upsetting.

I really, desperately wanted to change my url after returning to tumblr and having had my previous one for YEARS. So I searched far and wide until I settled on this one...

Nope. I've been here for 9 years and to this day I still have no idea what it is or how to use it. You get 100 posts in an hour or you get nothing, there is no in-between.

5. Why did you start your blog?

I was a part of the Czech Glee fandom and wanted to read more fanfiction. I found a person who was posting their Czech fanfics here and while scrolling through their blog I realized that hey, this place is pretty cool, it's got moving pictures and shit... so I also made one.

6. Why did you choose your icon?

Well because he's just TOO CUTE 🥺💕 william my beloved

I made the edit for a post of mine and found it again while scrolling through my files. I realized it fit the pink vibe I have going on rn on my blog and I felt like replacing my other icon that had my face in it cause I wasn't feeling it anymore.

7. Why did your choose your header?

Purely for aesthetic reasons because pink!! and pretty!!

So right now my most popular one is this Eurovision one which currently has 8.3k notes and has caused quite a lot of people to get angry because it's not RENAISSANCE it's bArOqUe

I don't know, I'm scared to monitor my social media usage cause it's bad. But more often than not, I'll just come here to message friends and scroll without really reblogging stuff or paying attention to anything.

14. Did you ever have fight/argument with other blog?

I don't like confrontation and fighting with people but I've gotten myself involved in drama a couple of times over the years. One time I made a really stupid comment under the influence of someone extremely toxic and ended up getting so much shit I had to delete everything related to that situation, close my ask box and just leave tumblr for a couple of days. I've been careful not to get involved in anything like that ever since.

If something pisses me off I'll just complain about it to my roommate irl lol.

15. How do you feel about "You need to reblog this" posts?

They make me feel awful. I'm really sensitive to guilt-tripping and pretty anxious when it comes to stuff like this (like remember those chain mails/posts about demons appearing in your house if you don't repost? I wouldn't repost those cause I knew they were fake and didn't want to spread them but I wouldn't be able to fall asleep because I was convinced a demon would show up lol) so whenever I see them and scroll past for whatever reason, I kinda feel sick to my stomach.

I do! omg a friend remembered me?? and tagged me in a game because they want to learn more about me???? 🥺💕😭💖✨❤

Sometimes I forget to do them lol but I appreciate every single one! I just feel bad cause I'm bad at tagging others. I'm scared to tag people I don't actually talk to idk why. :(

Yes!! I just take them way too seriously so it takes me forever to answer them haha.

Mmm I have quite a few mutuals from the Dark Ages Glee days who were pretty big in the fandom back then (no idea why they followed me back lol).

Right now I'm honored to have a couple of people from the JATP fandom who I consider to be full-on celebrities following me back but I'm scared to tag them lmfao 😅😔
