Animation/Storyboarding Resources
Hiya everyone!
I’ve gotten a large number of asks about resources for learning animation and storyboarding so I’m going to put them all in one convenient post.
Please bear in mind that I only do 2D animation so I can’t recommend anything for 3D peeps, but I hope you find something helpful on here regardless!
STORYBOARDING
BOOKS
The Visual Story by Bruce Block - really strong book for talking about exactly what is going in the frame, how to draw the eye, keeping things like visual continuity.
Story - Robert McKee - Not so much about storyboarding exclusively, this book is about screenplays, but it covers important fundamentals about narrative and plot structure (like the +/- rule!!) I would definitely read this book if you want to learn stuff like pacing, it’s essential!
Directing the Story: Professional Storytelling and Storyboarding Techniques for Live Action and Animation by Francis Glebas - This is a solid book for storyboarding fundamentals. I found this one helpful because it has a lot of visual examples and I find big chunks of text hard to focus on.
On Film-making by Alexander Mackendrick - Similar to Robert McKee, this is a more technical approach to structuring your narrative whilst covering terminology and the function of plot points.
COURSES
Storyboarding with Kris Pearn - As far as I know, this course is audit only at the moment, but it’s a very good starter course that covers types of shot and when to use them, as well as storyboarding basics that every artist should know.
Action Adventure Cinematic Storytelling Workshop by Steve Ahn - Where do I even begin with this one? I took this course last year and I feel like I’m STILL learning from it. This course is focused on boarding action sequences (my fave!!) so if you wanna do in depth character emotion scenes then I wouldn’t look for it here, but Steve does a lot of really in depth lectures on how to draw the eye and keeping visual continuity whilst preserving audience anticipation. I would really REALLY recommend taking this course, it was an absolute delight. PLUS, you get feedback from Steve himself as well as other storyboarding bigwigs. Audit and reviewed versions available!
Visual Storytelling from the Portfolio Development Workshop courses by Calarts - I haven’t actually taken this course yet, but I’m currently enrolled, so I’ll update this post after I finish it!
2D ANIMATION
BOOKS
The Animators Survival Kit by Richard E. Williams - Any animators worth their salt has read this book. It will always get recommended to you and there’s good reason for it. It covers the real basic blocks and fundamental principles of animation. Buy it. Read it. LEARN from it.
COURSES
Animation Tutorials from Aaron Blaise - These courses by Aaron give you tons of videos that explain the animation principles whilst he demonstrates by animating a scene. It really helps to SEE the process being done (for me at least, I’m a visual learner) and helps to understand exactly why you’re putting which frames where.
Gobelins Summer School - Unfortunately, you can’t do this one online. But a friend of mine attended and she said it was extremely beneficial to her learning.
DRAWING
BOOKS
Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators by Michael D. Matessi - This book is what really got me into life drawing. The lines are so FLUID and have such great weight and form, it got me so excited to go out and draw some bodies! Any of Matessi’s books are good tbh, read them all!
Drawn to Life Volumes 1 & 2 by Walt Stanchfield - These books are one of those rare gems that really EXPLAIN drawing, why we interpret lines as things and how we see. It breaks down things like gesture, weight, line of action, and even goes into detail about why certain things are difficult to draw. One of the few “technical” books that I read through all the way to the end, I couldn’t put it down because for the first time ever I felt like UNDERSTOOD what I was drawing.
Colour and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney - Not so much a drawing book as it is about colour, but you don’t need to be pursuing realism to appreciate all the knowledge in this book. It goes really into why certain colours work together and how they reflect and influence the colours around them. Really important for understanding how to use colour effectively in your work.
COURSES
Intensive Basic Course - Character/Human/Anatomy Drawing Class, Online Drawing Workshop by Steve Ahn - Want to draw art like Legend of Korra/Voltron: Legendary Defender? Well now you can! There’s 8 lectures in the course that cover everything from using line weight to proper and stylised anatomy. If you’re just starting learning, this course will give you a serious jump start. And if you’re just improving, then you’ll get a serious boost. Also available in audit and reviewed!
Gesture Drawing with Alex Woo - Nail that line of action! Good tips on anatomy and keep proportions.
OTHER STUFF
Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud
Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual StorytellersBook by Marcos Mateu Mestre
Prepare to Board! Creating Story and Characters for Animated Features and Shorts by Nancy Beiman
Cinematic Storytelling by Jennifer Van Sijll
The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston
Just a foreword for those of you that are in this vein of thinking:
These resources are not a substitute for actually doing the work. You can read all the books on the shelf, but unless you actually get out there and start DOING, you won’t learn anything! The best lessons come from making mistakes, so GO! Make mistakes! Make BIG ones! And then do it again a little better next time :D
I hope these are helpful! If anyone has any questions or would like a better run down of the books and courses, please feel free to message me! <33

Voltron Fans, we as a fandom need to talk
I’m going to go over a few things and go into subcategories but I realize not everyone wants to see another rant of Voltron, so I will put it under a read more, but I urge you: If you were upset with season 7, thinking of signing a petition to rewrite season 8, or were bitter/salty/upset with the current ship status, please read under the read more.
Thank you for your time
1)Let me start with the biggest issue, in my opinion.
Don’t sign a ‘Rewrite Voltron Season 8′ Petition.
For many reasons, and I’ll do what no one else is doing and offer an alternative at the end of this section!
First: It won’t get enough signatures in time to matter in DreamWorks eyes.
Second: This isn’t a show about ships, its a show about war, though that doesn’t excuse them for sweeping Shiro's sexuality under the rug.
Third: Season 8 is supposed to air before the year's end, which means it’s already in the final stages of animation, if not finished. An episode of an animated series takes about 9 months to a year to fully write, animate, voice, and score. How do I know this?
The Voltron Crew told us, plus the crewniverse also said a similar thing, and I’ve done my own research because I hope to have a future in the field.
This means, right now, there’s no changing Season 8.
Fourth: Even if we got enough signatures for that, it wouldn’t matter because of point ‘Three’.
Does this mean we give up?
Fuck no
Alternatives:
One: We create a fan animation to rewrite the things we didn’t like about season 7 and adjust for season 8. This will work best if we decide to make one tumblr with experienced people and ask for volunteers, but we can go into further detail if this is what we decide.
Figuring out the right team of People to take over writing this new Voltron. I think it would be wise to put People who are indifferent to ships, multi-shippers, or less aggressive shippers on the team that does the writing, then hold a poll to see what ships we’d like represented. That would give all ships the same chance, or as fair as a chance as we could get.
Then all we’d need is dedicated teams for Sound, both music, and effects. Character designs, because come on if we do this their getting new outfits and more aliens, Storyboard artists/writers, animation, and voice actors, unless we could get the original cast to volunteer for free, but I don’t think that's likely.
Two: We start a petition to ask for more Episodes, and specify “We’re only interested if Minority groups such as the LGBT+/Queer community gets better rep and more focus”
we’ll have to do a few things, like see if the creators are even interested in having more seasons and episodes! Because nothing will get done without them unless we do the first option.
We will also have to start a petition or two outlining what we would like in future episodes: However, I wouldn’t specify ships, since that will take creativity out of the crew's hands.
I also suggest we as a fandom decide on a Hashtag to use for this movement. Something like #DoVoltronJustice. Someone will come up with something more creative.
Then, in an organized fashion, we contact DreamWorks and Netflix in waves. This will show continuous and momentous support for the show and guaranteed viewership.
2)Being upset, for lack of a better word, at the ship status
Keep this in mind: we don’t officially know the plans for canon ships if they confirm any of them.
We may get Allurance, we may get AxcaXKeith, we may still get Lotura, HELL we may get Klance.
We just don’t know what will happen if they do happen. I have thought at least 15 different times that different ships were gonna be canon over the course of the series, only for it to lose ground just to gain it again seasons later.
We just won’t know until the series is over.
Hell, we don’t even know if the series is gonna be over. For all we know they could have signed the cast for 80 more episodes and not told anyone yet!
We just don’t know
3)Upset with Season 7
I’ll admit, while I enjoyed season 7, it had some points that even made me tilt my head.
Like Shiro and the atlas.
WTF?
But keep in mind what I said in the last section. This might not be the end.
And if it is we can use my idea’s from ‘Don’t Sign a Season 8 petition’ to fix that.
But if we keep being bitter about this whole thing we’ll turn into a toxic fandom.
And who the hell wants to be in a toxic fandom
All I ask is we band together to work for a common goal: More Voltron and LGBT Rep if/when we get More Voltron.
I will spearhead this movement myself if I have to.
And if you have any idea’s or alternatives to what we could do, or a better hashtag LET ME KNOW.
We need to work together!
Thank you for coming to My Ted Talk
