a query for u nick. would love to hear your thoughts. so most ppl headcanon dean as bi, sometimes as gay but most often bi. and dean seems to have a type for women, but not for men. in some scenes where dean is in the presence of a man he finds attractive, the factors are different for each one. aaron, dr sexy, gunnar lawless, and cas to name a few! they’re all different. some are taller than him, some shorter, some are more rugged, some clean shaven and softer. so like why do u think this is? like what is deans type in men if he even has one? or any other things u could think of in this area. bc i know u like to get into dean thoughts and things.
HELLO hi thank you <3 well I think the most obvious and boring answer is that those by and large are not canonical instances of dean actually being attracted to men and we’re just reading it that way. like it’s a fair reading but it’s not the canonical intent, whereas him hooking up with women obviously is (although I would maybe quibble with dean having a “type” for women beyond them being generically hot and thin, but again, that’s probably more reflective of the show insisting he’s this cool macho bachelor and not his actual preferences). but if you wanted to make sense of it I guess you could say a huge part of it is “oh my god another gay person I’m going to fall in love with them immediately” syndrome. like dean is socially isolated and moves around a lot, so any time he meets another man who could even potentially be gay he’s like !!!!!!!!!
and then also also people are varied and have different tastes, chemistry isn’t necessarily congruent with abstract preferences like “tall” or “dark hair” or “hairy” etc. like those factors aren’t irrelevant of course but they aren’t the be all end all. I haven’t really thought a lot about what dean’s “type” might be though. like I think he does like authoritative men, confident men, men who are generally secure in themselves, etc, which is pretty consistent with the examples you bring up. Cas goes through such a large change throughout the show that this isn’t always the case, but he definitely fits that mould in the earlier seasons. Like I don’t think Dean would do well at all with a needy or insecure partner bc he’s already those things.
