A part of Bradley was expecting Jake to tell him to leave. That he wanted to be alone. And Bradley wouldn’t have pushed yet. “I’ll stay if you let me,” he answers, wrapping his arms around his friend as he settled into him, “How’re you holding up?” Bradley had been really concerned about him the past couple days and had wanted to ask about it but it wasn’t like they got enough time alone to actually talk about it. Slowly, Ray nodded in agreement. It was not that he did not believe that too, but sometimes people looked at him askance, in judgement, for the things he wanted to believe in. For the fact that he believed that in order to be good, you had to do good. You couldn't just pay lip service to things. You had to actively go out and find the things you wanted to see and bring into the world.

They called him naive, sometimes to his face. Laughed at his hopelessness, his ignorance. Except he was none of that. If he did not hold on to this, trying to be and do good, leave the world a little better than he found it, then it felt hopeless. Felt like he'd fallen into futility and despair.
