So you’ve established that faerie pregnancies are two years long, and that faerie genetics are dominant traits when they mate with humans so mixed species children are far more faerie than human. This works out fine with riona and bones, because riona is full faerie and has the capacity to carry that type of pregnancy. But what about the reverse with a female human and a male faerie? Human bodies weren’t designed for 2 year pregnancies, and giving birth barely a third into your pregnancy certainly isn’t compatible with life for human babies and I can’t imagine faeries either. So is it a thing where male faeries with a female human partner know they have to use contraceptives because any fetus with a faerie dad and a human mom will die upon it’s very premature delivery, and the only faerie human hybrids are from faerie mothers?
So, part of this is due to wing development. I took some inspiration from bats, as the only winged mammal, for the length of the pregnancy.
The total pregnancy is 96 weeks, so that comes out closer to 22 months vs 24 months. This is what I have written for pregnancy:
"The pregnancy lasts for 96 weeks, as this gives the faeries time to develop in the womb, especially their wings. Their wings take a lot of development, as there are extra bones, muscles, and ligaments that need to be formed, mostly in the attachments in their shoulder blades. The wings need the most time to develop, and the development of the wings takes up most of the later portion of the pregnancy.
A faerie can safely give birth anywhere after 55 weeks. The child, though very premature, will still survive. However, the wings will never fully develop in any child that is born before 89 weeks. They may have partial development of the wings depending on how long into the pregnancy that they are born, but they will never be able to fly or have full wing function.
The faerie pregnancy cannot be observed the way a human pregnancy is in modern days with technology. Faeries sort of mark different sections of pregnancy by seasons. Their pregnancy is just under two years, which makes them go through every season except for one fully, allowing them to easily keep track. Faeries can generally tell that they are pregnant within the first 4-8 weeks, and this gives them ample time to prepare their homes and lives for the change. While miscarriages can happen to faeries if they are under an inordinate amount of stress, they are rare, and faeries in the womb generally always make it to the point of viability. If a faerie miscarries before they find out they are pregnant, then they generally haven’t realized that they have miscarried."
So, a human with a uterus could theoretically give birth to a half-faerie child; their wings would just not be developed. While rare, there have been pregnancies that are longer than a year, though 375 days is the longest, and that is not nearly as long as 55 weeks. (Hence the theoretically.)
In most cases, the uterus-having partner for cross-species relationships would have to be the faerie, yes. It is the only chance for a completely healthy baby.
Faeries, though, generally a.) use some form of contraception at all times and b.) while fertile, do not get pregnant often. They live forever, and they would quickly overpopulate if they got pregnant as easily as humans can. Uterus-having faeries do not menstruate, so there is no "cycle". Generally, faeries get pregnant by increasing the amount of sex they are having. (Hence why Riona gets pregnant quickly during the honeymoon on Yorktown; I imagine that they are there for about six months, and she finds out in the 4-8 week window when they return to the Enterprise. Lots of sex was a good distraction for perpetually anxious Len, who felt super uncomfortable on the Yorktown base.)

if the AOS crew (Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov) were made out of cheese, what type of cheese would they be?
Responses are from THIS article. Kirk:
Cheddar
This popular cheese comes in many variations. Its flavor can range from creamy to sharp, and its color can run between a natural white to pumpkin orange. A Cheddar’s texture changes as it ages, becoming drier and more crumbly. Learn more about cheddar in our All About Cheddar Cheese article.
Spock:
Colby-Jack Cheese
This orange and white cheese is a combination of orange Colby cheese and white Monterey Jack cheese. It’s often used on grilled sandwiches, cooked vegetables and other warm dishes because it melts well.
Scotty:
Cheese Curds
Popular in the United States and Canada, cheese curds have a springy or rubbery texture and can vary in flavor. They can be eaten as a snack or used in recipes like Poutine.
Bones:
Mozzarella
Similar to fresh mozzarella, this mozzarella is pulled and kneaded into strands, which contributes to its stretch ability. It melts well and is commonly used on pizza. Check out our classic Cheese Lovers Pizza Squares for a tasty mozzarella dish.
Sulu:
Ricotta
This fresh cheese is smoother than cottage cheese and while firm, it’s not solid. It has a light flavor that works well with dishes from lasagna to cheesecake and beyond.
Uhura:
Gruyere
This slightly grainy cheese is known for its fruity, earthy and nutty flavors. It melts well and adds a savory flavor without overpowering others. It’s commonly used on sandwiches, in hot meals, over French onion soup and more.
Chekov:
String Cheese
Traditionally, it’s a type of mozzarella made into small logs that can be pulled apart as strings. It comes in a variety of flavors and is often a staple of a good school lunch. Check out our String Cheese and Turkey Roll Ups to add a fun and healthy snack to your child's lunch.

Oh, so a major thing for my portrayal of both TOS and AOS McCoy:
Both Jocelyn (for TOS)/Katie (for AOS) and Leonard are at fault for the divorce. Jocelyn/Katie are not “horrible people”. Jocelyn/Katie and Leonard just were not compatible in the long-run, and they were unable to effectively work together through the bumps in the road.
Leonard wasn’t good at asking for help he sorely needed, and Jocelyn/Katie took it more personally than she needed to. Jocelyn/Katie wasn’t good at communicating that she needed Leonard home, and Leonard used work to try to bury his emotions.
Leonard and Jocelyn actually co-parent Joanna very well in TOS, and Leonard and Katie are able to be friends in the future. Leonard in TOS doesn’t join Starfleet until after Joanna is an adult. Leonard in AOS grew up with Katie, and they still care about each other immensely, and they’re able to reconnect like adults when they meet up on Shore Leave.
The divorce is a huge wake up call to him about the things he needed to work on, and that’s part of why he joins Starfleet in AOS.
People, especially for AOS, may argue with me because of the way McCoy speaks about her on the shuttle with Jim, but Leonard McCoy is nothing if not loyal. “She took the whole damn planet in the divorce” is him being a bit of a drama queen, because his anxiety is already through the roof due to his aviophobia, and he’s been drinking to try to deal with it. In reality, he felt that there was no reason for her to uproot her life, so he was going to head out of Georgia and figure out what he wanted to do with his life. Christopher Pike found him and recruited him.
For TOS, Leonard uses the divorce to focus on himself as well, and he does all he can to be there for Joanna, and he has nothing but kind words about Jocelyn. She fully supports him when he joins Starfleet, and she knows there’s a good chance that Joanna may follow her father’s footsteps some day.

Since it’s Riona’s birthday, as well as your headcanon bones’s birthday and their children, I was wondering if you could talk a little about why they’re all born on the same day. Since the odds off 3 births (riona bones and the twins) in a group with 3 births happening all on the same day are so incredibly low (you have a far better chance of ever being struck by lightning than this happening) I’m going to assume you have a narrative based reason for it. Is it symbolic of something, since magic exists in your universe? Or was riona and bones having the same birthday a coincidence and riona intentionally got pregnant and gave birth on their birthday? And do bones and riona celebrate a different day to allow the twins to have a special day to themselves? Most kids I know hate sharing birthdays with anyone and while it’s necessary for the twins it would really suck to have to share your special day with both your parents too
So, Riona’s birthday has always been August 4th. It was my Great-Grandfather’s birthday, and he wanted me born on his birthday (I was August 1, though), so when I made Riona’s birthday, I decided to honor him.
Bones was going to be a Leo. It’s all right in his name. Leonard “Leo”, McCoy means “fire”. I kinda had to. And Riona and Len are 400+ years apart, so it’s like “Oh, that’s a coincidence!”
And the twins are actually an unexpected pregnancy, but the timing works out well, as I have made Jim’s birthday remain March, so Beyond takes place in late March. Riona & Len get married in early April. They then have a lot of sex while stuck in Yorktown until the Enterprise-A is done. Faerie pregnancies are about two years long. So, the timing fits for them to be born in August.
Thematically, I decided on this, because Riona & Len both have a lot of issues with believing they’re alone. And I loved giving them all this shared experience as a family.
As they get older, Riona & Len don’t care about THEIR birthday at all. It is the twins’ day. And the twins love sharing their birthday. (The twins are rarely apart, and they continue to serve in Starfleet together on the same ships.)
It’s a special day, and I just wanted them to have this commonality for their little family that Riona & Len never thought they’d have.

Riona’s still pregnant for the first father’s day with the twins. Faerie pregnancies are about two years long. They happen to be on shore leave in Georgia, with Riona meeting Len’s family for the first time. And his whole family SPOILS him for that first one. They’re ecstatic for the babies to come and to see Len so happy.
The twins are born in August, so Riona’s still pregnant for the second father’s day, and that one’s a more private affair between Len & Riona.
The first one after they’re actually born is A Big Thing on the Enterprise, and everyone calls Len “Dr. Dad” for the day.

Oh, have some meta about the “He’d let you die” line from Into Darkness.
Bones is the human element of the ship. Bones isn’t a psychologist, but he’s the heart, and he gets people.
I don’t think he means that Spock would literally leave Jim to die. I think that he means that Spock isn’t Jim. Jim is the kind of person who, on sheer instinct, will come up with a solution. Spock, as far as Bones is aware, is not someone who is going to act on instinct.
(This is a bit wrong, especially right now, because Spock is still struggling with the loss of Vulcan, and he’s been throwing himself into situations with no thought as to if he’ll die or not. Though Bones does have some thoughts about Spock’s coping mechanisms that he definitely sees, even if he doesn’t see the true extent or damage.)
But Bones doesn’t see Spock coming up with a miracle the way Jim always does. He sees Spock logically trying to make it work within the lines, and that time would end up killing Jim.
That’s what Bones means by “He’d let you die.”

Headcanon: If I have not said it already, Leonard McCoy is a horse person.
He’s actually just in-general an animal person. Cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, even little rodents or reptiles or “non-traditional” pets. He has a way with all of them. It’s his big heart, really.

if the aos bridge crew were faeries, which type would each of them be and why?
Okay, I have already put some thought into this, as I’ve considered writing an AU to help me get back into my faerie world.
Leonard McCoy—A Life Faerie Healer. McCoy defines himself as a doctor, first and foremost. He’d still be a Healer no matter what.
Jim Kirk—Star Faerie Explorer. Jim’s drawn to the stars. He’d never be able to be anything else. He wants to go and learn and see everything in the vastness of space.
Saavik—My AOS Saavik reminds me much of my character, Aleria, in my novels. I feel that Saavik would end up in the same kind of role. A Shadow Faerie, terrified of her own magic, and cut off from everything and everyone she once knew.
Nyota Uhura—Honestly, I see Uhura being a Royal Faerie Queen. She’s about people and connections, and Uhura is often the glue holding the bridge especially together.
Carol Marcus—Fire Faerie Warmer. It feels technical and practical, much like the work she focuses on. She’d also enjoy taking care of people by warming things up.
Christopher Pike—An Earth Faerie Balancer. Every thing he does with the Enterprise and her crew, even when he’s an Admiral, is a balancing act, and he’s trying to make them all work together for the best. A Balancer does the same thing with the earth, balancing it against the other elements.
Gaila—An Air Faerie Traveler. Gaila feels like someone who doesn’t want roots but wants connections, and nothing says that to me more than a Traveler, connecting to people through stories and breezing away.
Jaylah—A Weather Faerie Stormer. I don’t really have anything to explain this other than it fits her personality, and I feel like she’d be able to manipulate it in a fight as well as she adapts and manipulates other things in canon.
Syl—A Life Faerie Healer as well. What we do see of her is someone who just wants to help take care of others.

Never forget the fact that Bones’ introduction to Spock makes him go “Oh, someone who’ll help me rein Jim in some.” And then he learns that Spock’s just as batshit as Jim and just hides behind logic to justify it.

HEADCANON: McCoy has tattoos. This is moreso for AOS, but he has the tattoos of dates that helped make him who he is traveling up his spine. (Some dates include marrying Katie, starting and/or graduating med school, his dad’s death, meeting Jim, etc.)
In v: brighter than all the stars, he also has two hearts tattooed on his left ring finger, one for Jim & one for Anna. (This is inspired by KUrban’s real heart tattoo on his finger.)
He may have other tattoos, too, but I haven’t thought much about it beyond those two ideas.

Headcanon:
After Into Darkness, McCoy absolutely threatens to kill Jim on various occasions because that’s just what their relationship is like, and sometimes he uses phrases that refer to Jim’s death and resurrection. However, if anyone else ever tries to talk about Jim’s death, McCoy gets real fucking quiet and just. Can’t deal with it.

Headcanon: AOS McCoy is absolutely obtuse about a lot of things. This is mostly because, for my portrayal, he fell in love with Katie when they were children, dated her, and then got divorced. During Academy, he’s figuring himself out and not interested in dating. Depending on my partner, he has hooked up with Jim during Academy, but that’s neither here nor there to McCoy.
He IS charming, but he’s absolutely oblivious to when people flirt with him. He doesn’t see himself as “swoon worthy” attractive, so when people make 👀👀👀 at him, he’s confused.
But, y’know, get him in a position where he knows what’s going on, and he’ll be super suave and confident. This happens more readily post-Academy.

Headcanon: Both AOS and TOS McCoy will get visibly uncomfortable if anyone but Jim calls them “Bones”.
AOS McCoy, specifically in his v: brighter than all the stars, will tolerate it on the rare occasion from @aseelierose, but she only gets that grace due to the vulnerability that they shared during the time that Jim died and their worry and fear after he was resurrected. And Anna is pretty good at judging when it is okay to use Bones and when he’ll glare at her for it. She may use it sparingly. As a treat.
AOS McCoy also personally hates “Leo” as a nickname; it was what Katie and her family called him, and he has to suppress a shudder every time he hears it.
Both prefer nicknames to be used by people close to them, but they won’t correct anyone on a name unless they use “Bones” and aren’t Jim. (And even then, they did try correcting Jim at first before realizing that was a fruitless endeavor.)

Leonard Horatio McCoy, why do you always needle at Spock?
Dialogue reads as followed:
McCoy: Well, I can’t say much for the circumstances, but at least this is your big chance!
Spock: My big chance for what, Doctor?
McCoy: C’mon, Spock. You’ll never say it, but I know it’s eating at you that Jim sits in the big chair. Now you get a chance to give the orders again!
Spock: I am a logical man, Doctor. Captain Kirk’s promotion was a natural result of the events that brought us together.
McCoy: Fair enough. But something tells me we’re gonna need more than logic to get out of this…
Which is completely in line with the “You guys break up? What’d you do?” scene in Beyond.
I have Thoughts (TM) about this scene and will elaborate later, but it is one of the scenes that would have to be altered to make it adhere to Into Darkness—because I believe that a huge part of Jim’s character IS informed by having not lost anyone yet—and this scene wouldn’t make sense coming after Into Darkness. But I do think that this is a scene that makes sense in the development of McCoy & Spock’s relationship, and even if the circumstances and mission are different, I think this is something that would occur after (2009).

Related to the tags on THIS gifset, (specifically: #THE OTHER WAS SAVED BY PURE GRIT AND WILL AND DETERMINATION AND BONES OF STEEL THAT WRAPPED AROUND HIS HEART  #AND MADE HIM STRONG AND HARD ENOUGH TO FIGHT UNTIL HIS CAPTAIN WAS BREATHING AGAIN  #BECAUSE YOU KNOW HE’D FOLLOW SPOCK IF HE HAD TO BUT HE’D NEVER BE BONES’ CAPTAIN  #NEVER  #NOT LIKE JIM WAS  #THEY’D NEVER HAVE THAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP  #SO INSTEAD LEONARD BREAKS ALL THE LAWS OF SCIENCE TO SAVE HIS CAPTAIN  #BECAUSE JIM WILL ALWAYS ALWAYS BE HIS CAPTAIN  #ALWAYS ) the whole point of how Leonard sees Jim is that he sees Jim. Like, yes, Jim is his captain, but he’s way more than his captain.
Leonard never was going to go out on a starship. Leonard was going to get a safe, planet-side posting, maybe a space station if he absolutely had to, but he wasn’t going to be travelling through space. And then he met Jim. And Jim was determined to have Bones for his CMO. And the more that Leonard became Bones, the more that Leonard intertwined his life with Jim, the easier it was for him to see himself out in the black, chasing stars with his best friend.
That’s a huge part of why he turns back and sneaks Jim onto the Enterprise in the first place. He never meant to go out there without Jim. It was pointless without Jim.
I truly do not believe that Leonard McCoy would have been able to continue his posting on the Enterprise if Jim had died for good. He would have requested a transfer. The only person I could see convincing him to stay is Christopher Pike, and Pike’s a little too dead to do that.
Leonard moved heaven and earth and went to hell and back to raise Jim up from the dead, because he didn’t know who he was without Jim. He didn’t know what to do when he lost his best friend, the love of his life, and the person who convinced him over and over again to face his fears.
He didn’t do all of that to get his Captain back. He did it because it was Jim.

McCoy headcanons from a RPC Dev Server game night 7 months ago:
More of a cat person than a dog person–to elaborate, he enjoys the independence of a cat. He loves their mirroring habits and loves that he doesn’t have to be terribly hands on. And they’re smaller, so when he goes to curl up in bed at night, he can just have something warm on his chest without suffocating.
Engages in prank wars but does it discreetly. No one ever suspects him. Why would they? He’s serious ™. He’s also pretty observant about pranks. Bones knows Uhura’s game, but blames Kirk anyways; it’s more fun.
Immune to caffeine. Still mainlines coffee. Will kill you if you try to stop him. You can pry coffee from his cold, dead fingers.
