“No Survivors Yet Again”   Eighty Years Ago, Yesterday: (Friday) February 20th, 1943.  Convoy ONS-165 suffers another loss in rough weather. The previous day, she lost the Greek “SS Zeus” with All Hands. Today, another ship suffers the same fate. 520 miles northeast of St. Johns, Newfoundland, the British steamer “SS Radhurst” (Photo 1) is sunk by U-525 (Type IXC/40). The ship is gone in barely three minutes. And with her, go All Hands. 42 Men die with their ship – there are No Survivors.  Meanwhile, in the continuing storm in the Mediterranean, the Germans lose four Siebelfähre (aka, Siebel Ferry; sister ship, Photo 2) in the waters between Tunisia and Sicily. SF-99, SF-209, SF-215, and SF-216 are lost in the gale; casualties unspecified.   🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: 1, uboat.net; 2, PubDom wc#visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #convoybattle #kriegsmarine #uboats #uboat #nosurvivors #lostatsea #battleofthemediterranean #siebelferry #lostinastorm #foundered #ragingsea #stormatsea #oceanstorm #foulweather (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co7tzS3gVEo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sunday, March 15th, 1943 “There Goes Another Two” It’s not often we see a U-Boat victim in her death throes, but that’s what we have here today. This is the French steamer “SS Wyoming,” on her way to the bottom 96 miles north of the Azores. Running with Convoy UGS-6, she fell prey to U-524 (Type IXC). As you can see in the photo, the sinking occurs in relatively calm seas. Wonderfully, there is not a single fatality in her loss. All 127 crew and passengers are safely rescued by the venerable USS Champlin (DD-601, Bristol-Class) which sank U-130 with All Hands just three days prior on the 12th. A second attack occurs inside the Mediterranean, 64 miles northwest of Algiers. Convoy ET-14 is attacked by U-380 (VIIC). Her sole victim is the “SS Ocean Seaman,” (Photo 3, at her launching in Maine) an American-Built Liberty ship assigned to the British. She doesn’t sink, but she’s heavily damaged. She’s taken under tow to Algiers, where she’s declared a Total Loss. The ship may be gone, but her crew isn’t: in a miraculous repeat, she too suffers No Fatalities. All Hands, 59 men, are safe and sound. Another day comes to a bloodless end, at least for now… 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: uboat.net (all) #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #kriegsmarine #uboat #uboats #uboot #torpedoattack #convoybattle #wyoming #libertyship #steamer #steamship #allsafe #nocasualties #nofatalities #usschamplin (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0NkVDAspw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sunday, March 14th, 1943 "No Hits, No Runs, No Errors" The loss of the "Empress Of Canada" notwithstanding, nobody gets sunk in the North Atlantic today, although not for lack of trying. The only scrap is a scoreless tie between U-468 (VIIC) and the British corvette HMS Gentian (K90, Flower-Class). South of Greenland U-468 makes a run on Convoy ON-170. In kind, HMS Gentian, on escort duty, attacks with depth charges. The U-Boat escapes unscathed, but the attack was a success for the corvette; a few hours in length, the fight keeps U-468 tied down long enough for the Convoy to move on. U-468 and HMS Gentian break contact, and the skirmish is over. Another day ends, and the war goes on... 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: 1, abgconsulting.com.au; 2, PubDom #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #kriegsmarine #uboat #uboats #uboot #convoybattle #hmsgentian #gentian #u468 #typeviic #inconclusive #skirmish #breakoff #depthcharge #justanotherday (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpy61qHNPFG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“A Routine Day Of Losses” Eighty Years Ago, Today: (Saturday) March 6th, 1942: In the middle of nowhere, 627 miles northwest of the Azores, or 640 miles southeast of St. Johns, Newfound (we’ll let you pick), the Norwegian freighter “SS Thorstrand,” falls prey to U-172 (Type IXC). Only four men are killed in the sinking, but its no easy days for the survivors in three lifeboats. Since the ship was running alone, they are stuck in the open sea with no hope of rescue. One boat starts to leak, and they split the balance between two boats. Striking off for the Azores, one boat is found after a week. The other is found after ten days. All told, 43 men survive the ordeal. About 1,800 miles to the southeast, U-410 stalks Convoy KMS-10. About 83 miles southwest of Sagres, Portugal, she strikes. Her torpedo sinks the British steamer “SS Fort Battle River.” Wonderfully, there are No Fatalities as the ship sinks. Another torpedo finds, but only damages, the British steamer “Fort Paskoyac.” There are No Fatalities to her crew of 67, and she steams on to Gibraltar with the Convoy. She is repaired and back in service by Autumn. Just Another Day... 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: 1, pinterest; 2,5, Uboat.net; 3, wrecksite.eu; 4, PubDom #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #kriegsmarine #uboat #uboats #uboot #torpedoattack #convoybattle #battleofthemediterranean #middleofnowhere #middleoftheocean #oceanwarfare #lifeboat #allhands #safeandsound #justanotherday (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpeJxbPNzk5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Good evening, folks. As we've alluded to several times of late, March, 1943 will be the worst month of the war. For four weeks and three days, the Germans will absolutely cripple the shipping system as they carve up one Convoy after another. If you follow along each day, wondering how the hell we managed to win the Battle Of The Atlantic, you're not alone. For perspective, try to imagine being in the planning rooms in Washington, New York, Liverpool, and London, trying to come up with a winning strategy as the reports of the sinkings worsen, the casualties mount, vital supplies are sent to the bottom, and the Kriegsmarine draws closer to finally chopping the ocean in half. It is the Battle Of The Atlantic's Darkest Hour. We're not being dramatic - the raw figures will speak for themselves. We will, of course, have other posts, but for this in particular, we ask that you check in at least once daily, on or about 5:30 PM, EST if for no other reason to remember the men who fought and died in this historic and climactic - and forgotten - part of World War II. Stay 'tooned... 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #kriegsmarine #uboats #uboot #uboat #darkesthour #convoybattle #fighttothedeath #slaughterhouse #hanginginthebalance #highstakes #thisreallyhappened #amiracle #ontheropes #80thanniversary (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpOaABttuVI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Closing Out February 24th, 1943 (Part 2 of 2) Eighty Years Ago (Wednesday) February 24th, 1943: In the Mediterranean, about 40 miles northeast of Oran, Algeria, U-565, a Type VIIC, is stalking Convoy MKS-8. She puts the American Liberty Ship "SS Nathanial Greene in her sights - and puts two torpedoes into the her. The blasts wreck the ship - she's not sinking, but she's dead in the water. As rescue and recovery gets underway, German planes show up, one of whom torpedoes the Greene AGAIN. Miraculously, only 4 men were killed in the first attack, and none in the second. The remaining 53 Crewmen are rescued, and the stricken ship is taken under tow and beached on the Algerian coast. A survey reveals that she is too heavily damaged - she will never sail again. Just another day.. 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleofthemediterranean #kriegsmarine #uboat #uboats #uboot #convoybattle #merchantmariner #merchantseaman #merchantmarine #torpedoattack #aerialtorpedo #luftwaffe #antishipping #libertyship #nathanialgreene (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpHSuSltbWc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Part 1 of 3 – An Irish Tragedy 80 Years Ago, Today – (Tue) Feb 23rd, 1943: Folks, today is nothing short of a massacre. There are so many ships sunk, it will require a break down for EACH Convoy. This will be the first of three posts. Leading off, we will cover the loss of two ships. One, a neutral ship caught in the crossfire, and another running in a small coastal convoy. The tiny, and very neutral, 700-ton Irish steamer “Kyleclare” is homeward bound from neutral Portugal. Her next port of call is Fishguard, Wales. U-456, a Type VIIC, closes in. 240 miles southeast of the Irish Coast, a spread of torpedoes races towards the little ship. Two strike home, and Kyleclare disintegrates in the explosions, gone in an instant. U-456 investigates the debris field, but the ship is gone. ...so is her entire crew. There are No Survivors, and 18 Irish seamen are vaporized with their ship in the fog of war. Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean, another attack plays out. 5 and half miles off Djinet, Algeria, U-371, also a VIIC, stalks the tiny, three ship coastal convoy “Roplsey.” A single torpedo sinks the British steamer “SS Fintra,” with nine dead and 26 Survivors. This is just the beginning. Across the Atlantic, two Convoys are about to be massacred. Just another day… 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: Uboat.net #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #neutrality #republicofireland #eire #kyleclare #fogofwar #lostatsea #fishguard #nosurvivors #merchantmariner #kriegsmarine #uboat #uboats #torpedoattack #convoybattle (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpBY7vkAqEz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"February 17th, 1943 - Part 1 of 2: A Rough Day off South Africa" Eighty Years Ago, Today: (Wednesday) February 17th, 1943: 75 miles southeast of New London, South Africa, the British steamer “SS Llanashe” (Pic 1) is torpedoed and sunk by U-182 (Type IXD2). 3500 tons of precious tin and aluminum are lost with her… as are 33 of her crew. Nine survivors will be in a lifeboat for 11 days before rescue. 90 miles away to the northwest, another ship is lost. 10 miles south of Port Alfred, SA, the American steamer “SS Dear Lodge” (Pic 2) spots U-516 (IXC) on the surface in hot pursuit. The ship makes a run for it, and zig zags. However, her steering gear breaks, leaving her unable to maneuver. The first torpedo explosion is so violent it launches her deck cargo – three trucks and four railroad locomotives – right over the side in one shot. A second torpedo snaps her in two. Incredibly, only two men are killed. 55 others make it onto the boats, and are rescued. It may be just another day, but the Germans do not get away unscathed. Eighty Years Ago, Today - (Thursday) February 11th, 1943: 11 miles south of Cape St. Francis, South Africa, U-516 (Type IXC) torpedoes and sinks the British steamer "SS Helmspey" (Photo 1). Tea, rubber, and precious manganese iron ore go with her to the bottom. Four men are killed, and a fifth dies after rescue, with 41 Survivors. Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean, 29 miles east of Protaras, Cyprus, U-81, a Type VIIC (Photo 2) wipes out a small flotilla of sailing vessels. With her deck gun, she sinks three in 20 minutes: "Al Kasbanah" (Egyptian), "Dolphin" (British Palestinian), and "Husni" (Lebanese). (Casualties unspecified) Shortly thereafter, she bags the Egyptian "Sabah el Kheir" as well. (Casualties unspecified). 80 Years Ago Today - (Wednesday) February 10th, 1943, in the Mediterranean: U-118, a Type XB, has done pretty well for herself these last few days, sinking or damaging three ships with her minefield just off the Strait of Gibraltar. Now, she wings a fourth. The neutral Spanish steamer "SS Duero" (Photo 1) blunders into a mine 8.4 miles north of Tangier, Morocco. The ship is only damaged and does not sink; casualties unspecified. On the polar opposite end of the Mediterranean, 20 miles southwest of Beirut, Lebanon, U-81 (VIIC) hits the Dutch tanker "SS Saroena" (Photo 2) with only one torpedo, but that's enough to ignite part of her cargo of 57,000 barrels of crude oil. Ablaze, she runs for shore and beaches herself by Beirut. Miraculously, they get the fire out and she is refloated, repaired, and returned to service. 2 Dead, 57 Survivors. Last but not least, the Germans actually manage to sink someone. 7.5 miles southwest of Suiderstrand, South Africa, U-509 (IXC) stalks Convoy CA-11. Her victim is the British freighter "SS Queen Anne" (Photo 3). 5 Dead, 39 Survivors. Good evening, everyone. We ask that you please stand by for 6:30 PM (EST) tomorrow, February 3rd, 2023 (1943). We will be posting in humble reverence to one of the single most important moments of The Battle Of The Atlantic. In fact, it is arguably one of the most important of the entire War. It also has several very deep local connections to New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. We will warn you in advance that this will be one of most gut-wrenching, jaw-dropping moments, and awe-inspiring combat actions you will ever read about on this page, or in any history book. In fact, you probably WON'T read about it in any history book, because, like the Battle Of The Atlantic itself, it is all but forgotten. Please note that due to the necessary length of the story to maintain accuracy and context, the far longer, more-detail laden version will be found on our Facebook page. The link to the FB page is in our bio. We ask that you please endeavor to read the story there in its entirety. We also ask that you please share it, because this is one story that must be told, and never, EVER be forgotten. I only hope I can do it the justice that it deserves. Thank You. G'night. - Tom 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photo: Featureshoot.com #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #thisreallyhappened #yesthisreallyhappened #beyondcomprehension #uncommonvalor #thatothersmaylive #nogreaterlove #brothersinarms #honorourfallen #rememberthefallen #neverforgotten #torpedoattack #convoybattle https://www.instagram.com/p/CoLsXfSNa7c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"A One For One Swap." Eighty Years Ago, Today - (Friday) December 11th, 1942. In the Mediterranean, 69 miles northwest of Oran, Algeria, U-443, a Type VIIC, is stalking Convoy KMF-4. Outbound from England, it is enroute to support the Allied efforts in North Africa, now a month old. She fires a pair of torpedoes - both find their mark on the Royal Navy destoryer HMS Blean (L-47, Hunt-Class, Photo 1). She is gone in four minutes, taking 89 Officers and Men with her. 94 others make it over the side, and are rescued. Meanwhile, the 6,400 ton German cargo ship "SS Trautenfels" (Photo 2) is cruising through the North Sea. Off Terschelling, an island on the north coast of Holland. She runs into a mine, and down she goes. There are No Fatalities. “No Survivors - Nothing Is Ever Certain In The Battle Of The Atlantic”
Eighty Years Ago This Week – (Saturday) September 26th, 1942:
Yesterday, the U-Boats hit Convoy RB-1 roughly 600 miles west of Ireland. They sank two ships, ‘Boston’ and ‘New York,’ killing 55 and leaving 79 more in the boats. Of these, 75 men were picked up by the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Veteran (D 72; Admiralty V&W-Class). A sailor who went overboard during the rescue from the American “SS New Bedford” is among them. Death comes swiftly in the North Atlantic to those in lifeboats, and now, these 76 men, grateful to be dry, warm – and alive – now crowd the tiny destroyer, along with her crew of 159 Officers and Men. Convoy RB-1 continues to plod east toward landfall and safety.
HMS Veteran (Photos 1-3) truly lives up to her name; she is over 20 years old, having been built towards the end of World War 1. Over the next two decades, she has served her King and Country well, and despite her age, has fought honorably in the Battle of the Atlantic, helping to sink U-207, and steamed to North America and back as a Convoy Escort.
However, as we’ve seen time and again, a ship's age, prestige, and lives on board mean nothing in the wastes of the Atlantic.
400 miles from the safety of the Irish coastline, U-404 (VIIC) puts HMS Veteran square in her sights… and fires. Three torpedoes race towards her.
Two hit.
In a literal instant, HMS Veteran disintegrates under the blasts – and vanishes. Her demise is so violent, U-404’s crew hears her hull rip apart underwater.
Where there had been a 300-foot long ship, there is nothing but swirling ocean and wreckage… and where there had been 235 men on the eve of safe harbor… there are none.
All Hands – 159 crewmen, and the survivors from “Boston,” “New York,” and the sailor from “New Bedford,” are killed instantly.
And.. it’s not over.
The British “SS Yorktown” (no pic) is sunk by U-619 (VIIC); 18 dead, 42 survivors picked up by HMS Sardonyx (H 26, Admiralty S-Class, Pic 4)
And, rounding out the carnage…
23 miles off Venezuela, the Panamanian steamer “SS Tambour” (Pic 5) is sunk by U-175 (IXC); 8 dead, 24 survivors.
Just another rotten day....

Eighty Years Ago This Week – (Friday) September 25th, 1942:
This is the lead in to a real gut-wrencher.
Roughly 600 miles west of Erris Head, Ireland (aka the middle of nowhere) the opening moves of a real tragedy – a standard feature of the Battle Of The Atlantic – begin to play out.
An attack on Convoy RB-1, enroute to Northern Ireland, claims two ships, both British passenger steamers:
1) “SS Boston “(Photo 1), by U-216 (Type VIID). 17 men lose their lives when the ship goes down, and 49 go into the boats. A failed rescue attempt by the British steamer “SS New Bedford” (no photo) only recovers two men – after losing one of their own crewmen into the sea, who is fished out and hauled into a lifeboat.
Finally, the 47 survivors and the crewmen from New Bedford are rescued by the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Veteran (D 72, Admiralty Modified W-Class, Photo 2)
The second ship is “SS New York” (Photo 3), torpedoed by U-96 (VIIC). 38 men are killed in the attack. The ship crippled, 30 survivors go over the side. Again, HMS Veteran comes to the rescue and gets 28; the destroyer HMS Vanoc (H 33, Admiralty V & W-Class, Photo 4) picks up the other two.
Of note, HMS Veteran is now loaded to the gills, with her crew of 159 Officers and Men, and 76 survivors.
"New York" drifts away - and is found by U-91 (VIIC). The ship stubbornly costs the German sub four torpedoes (three misses and finally a hit) before going down early the next morning.
Meanwhile, 652 miles away to the northeast, another attack occurs on Convoy UR-42.
134 miles southeast of Vik, Iceland, the British steamer “SS Empire Bell” (Photo 5) is sunk by U- 442 (VIIC). 10 men are killed, and 27 are rescued.
However, the Germans don’t get away unscathed.
For everything we know about the Battle Of The Atlantic, there is plenty that we don’t.
40 miles northwest of Iceland, U-253… simply vanishes. And with her, go All Hands – 45 Officers and Men. Most likely the victim of a recently sewn minefield, the truth will probably never be known and she remains, like thousands of other ships, a ghost of the Atlantic.
Eighty Years Ago, Today….
