V, V, V — Day 12 : Set
So there is an on-going debate at work about language, and whether language, grammar, spelling and so forth is actually important.
bcos the dbeight is if u kan get ur message across then doz it matter how ur msg is sent?
You can probably imagine that I am on the side that getting the message across is all that really matters. Because when you are talking to someone, they can’t tell how you are spelling the worlds.
They can’t tell if you are saying they’re, there or their, and they can’t tell if u r saying u, you or ewe.
I am not a fan of people who think that language is fixed — that spelling, that grammar, that the structure of language can’t change.
People who insist you have to pronounce words in a certain way, that you have to ensure words are spelt in a certain way, that you have to ensure grammar is used in a certain way…….. I admit they annoy me a little.
Just look at the way language has evolved in the last one hundred, two hundred years.
Would people from two hundred years ago believe a phone would be a portable device?
Or a tablet would be a portable computer?
Would people from two thousand years ago believe a tablet would be a small pill?
Would people from a hundred years ago believe that console would refer to something you play games on?
Language grows as society grows. Language changes as society changes.
Language mutates as we need it to.
If you look at how each generation communicates — it is different from how the previous generation communicates. Not necessarily wildly different, but different enough to make it the next generation of communication.
We grow. We change. And language grows with us.
It is part of what makes us human. And I think to deny that is to deny what makes us human — it is to try to keep us stuck in the past.
I accept that a lot of people (almost everyone, in fact) don’t agree with this stance, especially on the topic of spelling and grammar (which is unfortunate because I am really not that good at spelling, and I have a very different definition of good grammar than most people) however I have come to accept that, because it’s the way it is :)
But — and this is the other part of what makes us human — there is a difference between accepting a basic standard that exists at a given point in time (to facilitate basic communication and understanding) and refusing to accept that this standard can be updated, can change and can grow to something new in the future.
Because refusing to accept that standards can be updated, can change and grow to something new in the future is not only denying what makes us human, it is also really quality management.
If you are curious where all this came from — the dictionary has over 100 definitions from the word “set”, and if one word can have THAT many definitions then I would suggest almost any word can have any meaning.
