Chiyotaki Ryokan / Higashiyama Onsen ♨️ Today's post is of the entrance area in Chiyotaki ryokan. There are nice souvenirs shop where they are selling quite a few different Aizu-nuri tablewares. Some are lacquerware which are traditional to Aizu area in Fukushima Prefecture (the third and the last photo 📸). Also, Fukushima is well known for its Japanese sakes🍶 and Aizu sake is famous for its delicious taste. The reason for this is that the region is blessed with delicious rice, good water, and a favorable climate. Arashi no Yu Yokohama🪨♨️ This location is known as the "Stone Onsen". In our previous post, we shared a reel of Arashi no Yu, and today we would like to share some photos of this beautiful place with you all! ❓What is "Arashi no Yu"? The floor is covered with a thick layer (25 cm to 50 cm) of 15 different types of medicinal ores, which are a mixture of mountain, river, and sea ores. The minerals from the medicinal stones and natural hot spring ingredients are infused into the bathroom as a "nano mist", which creates an experience similar to a hot spring without the use of hot water. ❓What are the on your body? The nanoparticles of ore and hot spring minerals are effectively absorbed by the body, while the large amount of sweat released during the process helps to eliminate harmful toxins from the body. ✅The heat source for Arashi no Yu is warm water, and as such, there are no electromagnetic waves involved. Central Higashiyama Onsen♨️ This area, and ryokan seen on the photos, can be really considered the central area of Higashiyama Onsen. The ryokan is called Mukaitaki and seems to be quite old and a central piece of Higashiyama Onsen. Winter Mountains of Higashiyama Onsen ♨️🏔️ At the end of Higashiyama Onsen town, just a few kilometres deeper into the mountain valley, sights like these greet the adventurous spirits. Cozy Interior of Shintaki Few interior shots from the Shintaki ryokan in Higashiyama Onsen. These are of the lounge area next to the robby. There are some old furniture pieces and other warm wooden elements that give off a cozy atmosphere. Also, there is a free drink bar (fruits juices, water, coffee) with some candies!! Japanese buffet Shintaki Ryokan breakfast is a buffet style. They offer several types of dishes (Asian and Western). We chose Japanese style traditional foods as seen on the third photo, e.g. many "Tsukudani (佃煮)" that go well with rice. 🍚 Tsukudani is very traditional Japanese food which usually boiled in soy sauce and we can use various ingredients such as a mushrooms, bamboo shoots, beef, cucumbers and etc. They are simply put on top of rice randomly and compliment each other nicely. Higashiyama Onsen, Kutsurogijuku Shintaki ♨️ Higashiyama Onsen has a long history, said to date back as far as 1300 years. We had the pleasure to visit this area at the start of this year and there is quite a lot to see and do. Tucked away in a valley, it feels secluded but at the same time just a 10 minute drive from Aizuwakamatsu city. Will share more sights and info of the area. These photos here show the exterior and some of interior from a "Kutsurogijuku Shintaki" ryokan. Okkirikomi ✨ A noodle dish in which wide/flat noodles made of wheat (udon) are stewed with vegetables and mushrooms that happen to be available in the house (traditionally, use what is around 💁🏻‍♀️).. and miso (or shoyu). It is said that the name "okkirikomi" comes from the dough being rolled around a rolling pin and then the dough is slightly "cut" (kinda surface level). In 2014, it was selected as an intangible national cultural asset. We visited Sousuian (蒼水庵) in Shima Onsen, which specializes in okkirikomi. All seats have a small IH heaters for cooking. Ryokan Bounty A selection of “kaiseki” (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner) at Morimata Ryokan. In previous posts we talked about money-to-quality aspect of the place (which is great!) and the kaiseki was super delicious👌Though slightly less than in somewhat more expensive places (then again this might fluctuate a fair bit as well). Some of the offerings are shown here: miso soup, cooked wild salmon, fresh tuna, rice (staple), and some tsukemono (preseved vegetables). The White Roof, Shima Onsen ♨️ Some traditional architecture and older sights from Shima Onsen. This area really is quite interesting and has a lot of old, forgotten and traditional, new mixed up. Shima Onsen ♨️ Well, not quite done yet with the Shima Onsen area 😌 This area has ton of nice and great ryokan to visit.. unfortunately (or rather fortunately) most were left unexplored but good to always go back for more! Morimata Ryokan, Shima Onsen ♨️ Few more shots from the Morimata Ryokan. This place has one of the best quality to price offerings, especially considering its location right in the famous Shima Onsen (during Christmas the cost per person with dinner and and breakfast was around just 9000 yen). The place also had a renovation done 2 years ago and truly feels fresh with modern touch. Since it has only 5 rooms, it is also very popular among larger groups or for people who enjoy longer and quiet stays. Shima Onsen, Gunma ♨️⁣

Some shots from Christmas Eve 2022 at Shima Onsen and more specifically, the Morimata Ryokan (もりまた旅館). We were told that this much snow is quite unusual at Shima during this time of the year (Yei for White Christmas! 😊). ⁣

Shima Onsen is one of the famous onsen areas within the Gunma prefecture, and Morimata was honestly such a nice place. More about Morimata and Shima in the upcoming posts! ⁣
