Happy birthday to me! 37 today. What am I doing for my birthday? I'm actually going to be working on improving my desk.

At the moment, it's a lightly customized IKEA Lagkapten/Adils table. (Please excuse the chaos, I'd just moved in when I did this project. That little computer on the desk was a stop-gap while my original gaming rig was out of service - I've since gotten a new PC which sits under the desk, and have gone back to my dual monitor setup.)

The edges are painted in Valspar's Sailing By Moonlight.

The top is covered in a Sheffield Pearl Grey sticky back plastic from D-C-Fix. It's this lovely silvery oak effect, and paired with the teal, I think it's taken my plain black desk from yawn to gorgeous.

I genuinely do love my desk, it's sturdy, lightweight enough I can move it easily if I need to and the right size for the space it's in, but since I use it for art, computing, and as a workbench, I really do need the keyboard and monitors off of the main desk top.

Today, I'm going to be painting the edges of some new pieces of chipboard to create a keyboard tray and monitor stand. It's going to be a bit of a process, since the desk top itself is mostly paperfill, so lacks strength to screw anything into it directly. I'll have to use one of the suggested IKEA hacks of using a product like No More Nails Heavy Objects for the project. My inclination is to adhere solid wood batons to the underside, then screw the verticals into those batons, rather than trying to fix the verticals directly to the underside of the desk, since I know more surface area will work better for adhesion.

I definitely feel like I'm showing my age though, getting excited about doing a DIY project for my birthday! 😅

Still, I can't begin to express how wonderful it will be to have a desk designed my way for my personal case usage, rather than a store-bought as-is one where I've had to make compromises. As well, being able to point to my desk and say "I made this" will be super satisfying.
