"Is Wylan's company not enough?"

He doesn't look up from his work, eyes in constant motion back and forth between two thick ledgers—confirming their accuracy—despite the little girl who had climbed into the seat across from him. His hand jerks in something like a flinch when he nearly scrawls an incorrect number, but Kaz catches himself in time. Notes that he's now become distracted. And emits a soft puff of a sigh (one that'd sound defeated to anyone else, and the reason he lets it slip without concern in front of Ari).

His fingers flex on his pen. Debating. Then he quietly nestles it in the binding of one book to finally meet the pair of wide, pleading meadow hues waiting for a more favorable response. Though he stares at her, his mind is elsewhere. He considers, calculates, ponders what benefits he could claim on a trip to the countryside. Through that alone does he settle with a compromise.

"I'll join you next time," Kaz halfway concedes, "once I've made the proper preparations. After all..." He pitches himself forward in his seat, hands folded neatly beneath his chin as what passes as a smile ghosts over his lips. "We want the outing to be perfect, don't we?"

He was cursed, he was sure of it. Surely, at time moment in the far-flung past, someone had placed a particular curse on him that made him approachable in the eyes of small, kind-hearted girls. Mammon was certain that there could be no other reason for why they gravitated towards him because it absolutely, positively wasn't because he was soft-hearted.

"Ah, geeze. . ." He thought Ariana was content to cling to the sleeve of his jacket, but that wasn't the case. Her small fingers slipped into his hand, where it was hidden away completely as his longer fingers wrapped 'round. "Gonna look like a total tool holdin' hands with ya like this, but I guess it's better than gettin' into shi — uh, butt loads of trouble."

Watching his language around impressionable children was a pain, but it was another tiny aspect that added to a dozen others. No swearing, no drinking, no talking about what he was and where he was from. No gambling, no talk of money and magic.

He had to be a good example, or else her father would riot. And if that happened, his oldest brother would catch wind and drop onto his head a punishment of epic portions.

"If you're gonna hold on, ya don't get t'let go 'til I say so! Ain't gonna lose ya and get my head bitten off." A quick glance was thrown down to the girl, and he failed to realize just how fond his eyes were then. "Ya ain't gonna wanna let go, anyway! Place I'm takin' ya is awesome."

"Don't come any closer." The first words to leave his mouth were not a greeting, nor an acknowledgement of the strange...offering? she carried. And yet, words that would be sharp for most were softened for her: a gentle, stern reminder that was reinforced by Xiao stepping back each time she stepped closer.

Only with a few feet of distance between them did golden eyes drop to the spoon that she seemed to want to force into his mouth. Lucky for the adeptus that she couldn't reach even if he would allow her close enough. "Adepti do not eat human food," he said, although the sidelong look he cast the spoon made obvious his questioning whether the pile of brown goop could be dubbed as such.

That should have been the end of it. But after a pause—

"It is kind of you, to bring me an offering—but unnecessary. If this...beanut putter—" Unfamiliar syllables fell awkwardly, leaving a distinct scrunch in the bridge of his nose, "—is 'nice,' you should enjoy it yourself."
