Alright, so I took a surprisingly long time to think about a response to this that didn't come off as the messiest answer ever. The short version is - both.

I think that, even sticking only to official media both in terms of canon and IRL comments from people who worked on the series, Shinji is the best accidental transfem character ever created. None of it (?) is intentional, but there's zero stretches that need to be made to interpret her as so, at least in my opinion. I could genuinely write an essay as to why I think this way (and frankly I will if prompted), but I'll just share my favourite example for now:

In an interview with main Evangelion character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto at the end of volume 2 of his manga version of the series, he briefly discusses designing characters, starting with Shinji. He first describes Shinji's hair as that of a "boyish young girl", and follows up by explaining how heavily based on Nadia (from Gainax's first TV series) her design is - leading to my favourite quote, "...in concrete terms, his eyes are a girl's eyes."

A girl's eyes trapped in a boy's body. I'm not sure how 1:1 Viz's translation is with his original quote, but fuck if this series isn't amazing at accidentally churning out trans metaphors (and that isn't even touching on the fact that a major component of Shinji's character is being forced to pilot a body she don't want to because the adults in her life say that’s what’s right and building her sense of identity around hating being forced to do so)!!

All that yapping aside, when you see me drawing her it's 99.9% likely to be my little headcanon AU based on episode 26's alt continuity with some... obvious tinkering. If you're willing to subject yourself to a bit of fanfiction, I'm writing an ongoing fic that demonstrates it far better than I ever could explain. It also has pretty pictures!

Apologies for the long response, this has essentially opened up whatever the Pandora's Box equivalent is for my special interests.

The following is a non-comprehensive list of some facts & stories about Justin that I find poignant and contribute to why I think he's a great person:

He's got a dry, sarcastic sense of humour. One of my favourite Justin quips came during a post-practice presser. Interviewer: "How is Zion fitting into your Offense?" Justin: "...hopefully at Right Guard".

Honorable mention: that time a reporter asked Justin during a presser if he lifts weights and Justin replied "Does it not look like it?" after a hilariously awkward silence. 😂

He seems to love and care for animals. I love the story of him rescuing two kittens whilst at Oregon and nursing them back to health before rehoming them. He did that all whilst seemingly juggling his academics and football which I think is pretty darn incredible and shows his nurturing side.

Also, according to his Mum, Holly, as a kid Justin would try to bring various animals home as pets. I just find it super adorable to imagine a little Justin eagerly presenting some creature to his Mum asking if he can keep it, promising to take care of it. This is even more cute to me knowing how he rescued those kittens.

He cares deeply for his family and seems very family-oriented. I absolutely love that during a PAC-12 Media Day interview where he was asked about some of the things he wanted in life, the first thing he said was "get married, be a great father, take care of my family". No mention of wealth or any materialistic things - only love and relationships.

He puts his shopping trolley back, which is the ultimate human goodness litmus test. I also find it hilarious that he straight up made Gabe his son by scolding him and telling him to go get his trolley and put it back after seeing Gabe try to abandon it in the car park. Justin just appreciates when things are in order and people do the right thing, as do I.

Also see that bit of Justin's mic'd up video where he calls out Cortez Broughton for his shitty parking lmaooo.

The fact that he moans softly after every throw and you all know damn well why I love that 👀.

He has an eclectic taste in music but favours Classic Rock which is due to his Dad's influence. I love this bc I too have a soft spot for Classic Rock bc of my Dad. Basically what I'm saying is that we're soulmates.

The fact that he's a literal millionaire and still thinks that Whole Foods is too expensive 🫰

Also that time Justin said fuck it to getting a professional haircut during his rookie year bc he deemed that "too expensive" too. Someone take this man to an ATM and show him his account balance please!

His penchant for movie quotes. I relate to this seeing as my entire sense of humour consists of pop culture references and silly movie quotes. I grew up with 3 brothers, can you tell?

He loves fishing. I love fishing. In fact, I spent my entire childhood in waders fishing Scottish rivers with my dad. I'm also dating a man whose father runs a successful fishing tackle business so you could say that I'm a bit obsessed.

So that's just a few things that I love about Justin with a few facts to go with. I hope that was along the lines of what you were hoping for 🩵

what do you think justin’s love language is?

He strikes me as an Acts of Service kinda guy. It's little things he does consistently for you that aren't massive displays of affection but useful little acts that convey how much you mean to him.

It's you waking up after he's left for training to find an iced coffee in the fridge, it's him taking out the rubbish as he leaves so you don't have to, it's him taking your car to get washed and filled, it's him gently helping you perfect your form when you work out together bc he doesn't want you to injure yourself, it's him picking up your favourite meal on his way home from the facility bc it seemed like you were having a bad day, it's him picking up tampons at the store bc you might need them, it's him fixing things or cleaning around the house bc he knows you're busy too and that you're a partnership.

He may not be able to spend a lot of time with you bc of football, think to shower you in expensive gifts, be touchy-feely in his affection, or even say how much you mean to him but he'll do little, cumulative things for you to show it and that make a subtle yet positive impact on your life and mindset.

What do y’all think is his type? Looks wise and personality wise. I’ve never seen anyone he’s dated and all ever says about him is that he’s shy

I'm gonna preface this by saying that this is all just my opinion; I don't know Justin personally so this is all just speculative on my part.

I wanna add that attraction is a very unusual thing and people date/marry people who aren't their "type" all the time and are perfectly happy. So that being said, I hope that no one takes what I say here too seriously or feels upset if they don't fit the criteria I list below.

Physicality:

I don't think he has any real preference in terms of hair or complexion other than he may have a soft spot for blondes but I'm not set on that one.

I think he has a definite liking towards athletic girls or those interested in fitness. I don't think that he'd find women with fuller/curvier figures unattractive whatsoever, but I will say that I think he has a penchant for the type of lean gym girls you see on tiktok or IG.

Also I highly suspect he's a "🍑 man", so grab your resistance bands, grab your dumbbells, and hit those squats.

Age-wise, I could see him with a woman anywhere between 22 and 32 years old realistically. I'll add that I think maturity would factor into the age aspect quite heavily.

Personality:

Despite Justin's reputation for shyness or being a quiet person, I could definitely see him being attracted to someone who embodies traits more typically associated with extroverted personalities; someone who's a bit more outgoing or gregarious in any social setting.

That said, I do think that his desire for privacy would mean that any outgoing personality would need to steer clear of any perceivable attention-seeking or be so outgoing that they would never be content with staying at home for an evening.

I also think he would be attracted to someone with a sense of fun; someone who would reflect his silly side. I definitely think Justin is at his core a bit of a goofball so I think he'd love a girl who would understand his references and inside jokes. I think he would love to make his girl laugh and would want someone who could make him laugh as well.

I get the impression Justin can be a bit aloof at times in relationships so I think he'd also like a woman with a sense of independence; someone who had their own friends, hobbies, and career so they weren't entirely focused on him. I think he'd appreciate a supportive girlfriend but I don't think he'd like a dependent girlfriend that makes dating him the centre of her own life.

Him waking up at 2 am for the brisket… dad Justin waking up to take care of the newborn cause it was crying and let wifey sleep in.

Oh you know he would tho. He'd take the baby somewhere to feed them so wifey could sleep soundly.

Once the baby was fed and settled he'd just sit there speaking to them in whispered words about literally anything, from football to how much he loved them and their mummy.

Perhaps he wouldn't be above singing a little lullaby, as long as no one was around to hear it. Imagine him singing (or trying to) "twinkle twinkle little star" in that deep voice, croaky from exhaustion but soft with love for his baby.

Does anyone know what kind of music Justin listens to? Has he ever revealed his favorite songs? This man is such a mystery it drives me crazy.

Yeah, he has! He said he has a varied taste in music, liking all sorts like country, hip hop, etc. He loves classic rock and grew up listening to AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty with his Dad. Those are his favourites. He said his pre-game anthem is "For Those About To Rock" by AC/DC.
